    I have become much more conscious in the last year of plastic I consume. I was already using tote bags for shopping (plastic bags are still the norm here) and coffee tumblers, buying fresh veg (no bag, just put them in a separate tote), etc. It’s the buying products in a non-grocery store that is the hardest thing. EVERYTHING comes in plastic. Toys, markers, art tools, etc etc. I recycle everything I can (though most isn’t accepted here in this small town), but man. It’s hard. Buying online is basically something I can’t avoid for good options, but everything uses plastic.
    I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with all that unavoidable waste from non-groceries, and thinking about melting it down to use in something someday. I don’t know. I just don’t know. It’s so frustrating.
    It would be a miracle to get major grocery stores like Safeway and the like to care one whit for the environment. They still sell meat and all sorts of junk food, so it’s obvious that they don’t.

    It’s impossible to live 100% plastic free, however it is very possible to minimize the amount of plastic you use. Switching to reusable straws, bringing your own mug to get coffee, eat less packaged foods, etc..

    I did several swaps - reusable cup and bottle and shopping bags and a bamboo toothbrush - which was terrible and I again switched to a plastic toothbrush. But I will try again and hopefully I will get used to it one day!
    By the way - great presentation and such an important issue! Keep up the good work!

    I carry a bamboo straw and a titanium spork as well as my steel water bottle where ever I go. I stopped buying baggies and got reusable silicone bags. A steel bento box for restaurant left overs and take away. Reusable shopping bags, reusable produce bags. I'm just starting, but I'm determined!

    I try to live plastic free and I try to make my friends aware of the real situation. What we r doing to earth with plastic is heart breaking. I believe nobody is aware of it and so they are living happily in a world of plastic, but once they become aware of the situation they start thinking about it more and try to reduce it. Every curriculum in school is teaching students to reduce reuse and recycle but I can not see any impact of it in their mind. It really makes me sad. If the next generation grow up as we did in a world of plastic then its going to be a very different world. We will loose many things in this World just for the convenience and super usability of plastic.

    Bravo for your videos. I was overwhelmed by the vast quantity of plastics everywhere in our lives. Started buying laundry detergent in boxes instead of liquid detergent in those forever bottles. Then I got discouraged. Like, how can I make a difference on such a HUGE problem? But if we all do these things, maybe we can save the planet?!

    I can’t drink tap water due to a whole host of issues so the biggest thing I’ve done at the beginning of 2019 is to buy a Pur water filter jug for my fridge. I know the filters can be recycled I just need to research where there is a drop off for it in my area and hopefully this is my start to reducing the plastic I was using with plastic water bottles. Next up for me is to get a reusable coffee cup I can take with me everywhere I go.

    Maybe because California is by the ocean we are concerned with all the plastic use. We have a fee on the plastic bags from grocery stores, and some places only give out straws if you ask for them. Little things, but I think we'll be able to slowly reduce the amount of plastic waste.

    • @Dekunutcase
      @Dekunutcase 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are many simple things that could be done by businesses to reduce waste. One easy thing is to just ask if someone wants a bag, sauces, spoons, etc. They just dump a box in a bag with silverware in a bag and a giant handful of individual sauces that many people toss the extras of straight into the trash. A simple box and maybe a sauce or two is much less of an impact per meal.

    Goverment taxation on things of this type, (or many other things), may not be a good trend. Taxation may jump onto many other things which people object to, - as they do already in many.
    One day yellow sweaters may be taxed, because it was found they they look soiled after too few uses and are discarded sooner.
    Public awareness, in my opinion, is what is needed, and this show may help.

    While I do use only reusable cups and water bottles etc, I want to go to the next level and do away with plastic containing clothing. particularly as the fashion industry wants us to change so often, I still have woolen jumpers made by knitted by mum that are 40 years old, and woolen sharers shirts I bought 35 years ago. I don't want to replace with cardboard as the glues used are not biodegradable. Think Reuse, recycle and biodegradable please.

      Also, most plastic can’t be recycled. And the plastic that can be can only be recycled one or two times before it then becomes not recyclable. The answer is to reduce usage of it overall and try to utilize what we have already created.

However there are tons of ways to reduce plastic without it affecting things such as sanitary medical supplies. It’s not an all or nothing thing. We can do so much with our day to day life choices.

    I don't think plastic is such a big problem, even if we don't recycle it. If it is buried in a landfill, I am not aware that it is a problem to any form of life. OK, there is a bit more space taken by that plastic, but again, not a huge problem. Largest problem I see are the developing countries. I've watched videos of Indians unloading trucks of garbage into the rivers, and big companies in whole east Asia are dumping everything into their rivers, which in the end end up in our oceans. I am not saying we shouldn't take the alternate way and not take the plastic packaging if we have an easy solution, but the biggest problem is the way people dispose of plastic.

    • @Rainkit
      @Rainkit 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't trust that "study", but even if it is true, that simply means that we do a better job of containing it. We should still reduce our use unless we want landfills filled with plastic waste that won't break down for eons.

    Consumer-based solutions to global warming are ineffective and a distraction. 71% of emissions are caused by 100 corporations. Consumer-based solutions are usually either expensive, time-consuming or demanding of effort. Most people either earn too low wages or lack the capacity to care for that. And even if they do, they do not have encyclopedic knowledge of the impact of all choices one does; obsessing over a handful of aspects such as single-use plastics has a negligible impact, and distracts people from addressing the fact that practically all emissions are caused by corporations, which are not neutral agents. Shame on BBC for pushing this false narrative, but ugh, what can you expect.
    Also, items like non-plastic bags are usually extremely resource intensive to produce (e.g. cotton bags) and are for that reason absolutely terrible for the environment compared to single-use or durable plastic bags, even though they are marketed as being the opposite, and people, not all being encyclopedic computer brains, of course believe it.

    • @eroelser
      @eroelser 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well waht do these 100 companies make their money with? selling you stuff, probably in packed in plastic. So this does have some impact on these companys.
      But i agree that there needs to be more action ffrom governments because only the minority of people pays attention to these things.

    • @splatcat3434
      @splatcat3434 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Consumers do not purposely select non-recyclable plastic packaging or the like when consuming. We purchase products, not packaging. We are happy to receive the products if they arrive in packaging, and are happy if the packaging did its job, not what its made from. Businesses care about maximising their profits, even down to what their chosen packaging is made from.
      Plastic should be used and recycled.
      The other options are what again - tree based or animal based?
      Governments and businesses need to do better than just outlawing plastic. We once used tree-based packaging and bags, and we moved to plastic to save the trees and the environment. We then moved to bio-degradable plastic packaging and bags to save the environment. We have then moved to recyclable plastic packaging and bags to reduce the amount of plastic in the environment. It costs the consumer, means profits for business, and increased taxes for gov.
      Most of the rubbish I see in my local area is not because consumers throw it in to the environment, but rather because of mismanagement of rubbish collection (public and private), poor rubbish storage and sorting, poor recycling practices, and outdated disposal methods.
      Regardless what it is made from, most of us consumers place rubbish in the bins and we pay for its removal. What happens next is the fault of businesses and gov's concerned with its disposal.
