Dolly was raised in a 2 room shack, with 10 kids and her parents, in a shack without running water or electricity, in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee. Her father could not read and was very embarrassed about it. This song is based on her true story and the original coat is on display in her museum. She started “Imagination Library” that sends out free books, every month, to every child signed up in the program as a tribute to her illiterate father. Her husband avoids the limelight and is a driveway sealer who listens to heavy metal. They have been married for nearly 40 years. He is rarely at events so there are few pictures of him. She moved her childhood home to the Dollywood theme park so fans can see where she was raised and learn more about that time of American hardship and history.
My mother was also a barefoot dirt poor child from Appalachia. She’d cry when she heard this song thinking of her mother who struggled to keep clothes on her 9 children’s backs. Now I cry thinking of her.
That was the old joke, everybody's a little bit country when Dolly Parton comes on. Even people who were not fans of country music still like Dolly Parton's songs and recognized her Talent.
When I was a small girl my mama played this song on he guitar and I and my sister sang it to my dad. He cried. Yes he was drunk. I hear it in my head all the time. Dolly is a goddess. I will always love her.
This is Dolly's most autobiographical song, and her favorite that she wrote. I've been a Dolly fan for almost 40 years and she is an amazing human and artist.
❤ she is not only a singer she has her library for children 5 and under she gives books too. She helps the less fortunate glad I had the chance to meet her God Bless you Dolly love her new album Rockstar
I love that you have discovered Dolly. She is our national treasure. Did you know she donated a million dollars to Vanderbilt University when they were working on a vaccine for Covid? When a wildfire swept through areas of her beloved Smokey Mountains and peoples homes were destroyed, she gave everyone that lost their home $2,000 a month until they were able to get back on their feet. Because her daddy never learned to read, Dolly was convinced that the earlier a child was exposed to books, the better students they would become. So she started a program that would give all preschool kids a free book every month, until they started school. It still continues to this day. When the war in Ukraine began and children were in makeshift shelters, Dolly sent millions of books to them almost immediately. There are many more stories like this about Dolly, so I’m glad you found her. My favorite Dolly song is “Here You Come Again “.

That is one of my favourites and Love is like a butterfly. I love her earlier songs that were really about her life. I know all of those things about Dolly and I am Australian.
Dolly Parton, is a very down to earth. She is true to her songs. I am very proud of you and glad that you enjoy her. When I am a lone and her her songs, I think of my parents. I get tears Everytime, I hear sing.
It used to be a well-known joke/ saying that "everyone is a little county when Dolly Parton comes on the radio" because even people who are not fans of country music still liked her songs and admired her Talent. If you go to Dolly's theme park, she actually still has that coat her mom made for her and it is on display there
I asked for this because it is about her life as a child. This happened to Dolly and so many of her earlier songs are about her life growing up in the Tennessee Mountains. You are allowed to like Dolly because she would like you. She is a beautiful soul with a very big heart. She just keeps on giving. She has been married to Carl for 53 years. I only saw him once last year because he is a farmer so he will not go out. He took Dolly out for their last wedding Anniversary. Dolly always says the Good Lord didn’t let her have children because she already had too many in the world to care for, she does. I love her singing Apple Jack too. Thank you.
Dolly Parton may be the only person who, once you've learned of her extreme poverty as a child and path to fame, leaves you wanting to experience all of it. One piece of wisdom from her: "don't confuse dreaming and wishing." then, my paraphrase: wishing doesn't move you forward; dreaming lights your inner fire.
I think Dolly resonates with everyone because her songs are so relatable. She came from a very poor and humble background and much of her music is personal experience. She has truly built her career from scratch, clawed and fought her way to the top! She is an inspiration!!
You sure are gonna have fun on this journey with Dolly Parton and you will be very surprised when you find many songs that you already know and love were actually written by her. Have fun and enjoy each one.
Dolly's a great writer and singer too. Did you know she wrote and performed first the song "I Will Always Love You" that Whitney Houston was famous for singing? Dolly's amazing.
Dolly was born in a family from the Appellation mountains, one of 9 kids. She was dirt poor, made it rich with her talent and built a town there called Dollywood. It helps bring jobs to the people there and she supports her family too. A beauty inside and out.
I learned a lot as a little girl when I heard this song. A deep meaningful lesson to pride & real meaning in life & about not feeling ashamed of what I didn't have
If you haven't seen it, she was inducted in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame this year (as one of the highest grossing and award winning songwriters in history, regardless of genre) and as part of the ceremony a huge number of musicians got on stage to perform a verse or two of duet with her on Jolene. One of the people that joined her for a verse was the OG Metal God Rob Halford from Judas Priest, just grinning from ear to ear enjoying the hell out of himself paying tribute to this amazing woman. One of the coolest live performance surprises I've seen in years.
@matthewarms3786 I did not know about that performance, but I am not one bit surprised. She deserves her accolades and I love that we can recognize talent across so many genres. Thank you for sharing this!
Dolly isn’t my favorite singer BUT she is my favorite songwriter and human being. She’s literally one of the most generous person you’ll ever know about, and that’s just the stuff we’re aware of. She invested the royalties from Whitney’s cover of I Will Always Love You into black business neighborhoods in Nashville. She wrote this on the back of a dry cleaning bill while riding in her tour bus.
Dolly Parton is not only an amazing songwriter and singer, but such a KIND person. She was raised destitute...worked like a champ...and now gives to her community.
This is the kind of music I grew up hearing all the time. It's such a great joy to witness someone hear it for the first time and to be blessed by it. Great video!
She's so amazing. Every child born in Tennessee gets a book from her free at birth and a new one at intervals until age 5. This is a tribute to her father who was illiterate. She also donated 1 million dollars towards research for the covid vaccine. Plus, She's beautiful inside and out and talented.
I'm a musician & like ALL types of music.!! Love Dolly Parton, too.! And I'm a "grown-ass man" (71yrs.)...and STILL CRY every time I hear that song.!?!! THAT'S from the heart & soul.!! Lot of great music out there....ENJOY.!!

Every child in the County gets a hardback book from birth to 5 thru Imagination Express, as well. She has given so much back to her home, it is amazing.
This song is a true story from Dolly's childhood. Thanks for reacting to it! Dolly has said it's her favorite of all the songs she's written. Here's a quote from an interview she did on it: "it's more than a song. It's an attitude. It's a philosophy. It speaks about family. It's anti-bullying. It just covers so many things." There was a children's book made based on the song and it's used in schools as part of the anti-bullying curriculum. About the book, Dolly said, "it lets people know that we're supposed to love one another for who and what we are, and to celebrate our differences, because we shouldn't all be the same."
Everyone should listen to Dolly. Best human ever. My mama strummed the guitar and we sand to my dad. He was drunnk and he cried.Dollynis a goddess and a love of my life.
I was born in Cuba. I didn't grow up listening to country, but this song introduced me to the genre. I cry every time I hear that song, thinking about my mom and all the sacrifices she made for me and my brother. I'm glad that you reacted to it and that you loved it ❤️
This is a true story. Dolly grew up very poor. Look into her life story some time. When I was 9 years old I entered a talent show at school and I sang this song. My mom took an old button down shirt of my dad's and sewed different colorful patches of cloth to it for me to wear. I could imagine her feelings because I felt so proud to wear that "coat" my mom made me for my performance, but also got made fun of for it because it was homemade and looked raggedy, even though that was the point. I'm 44 years old and I still have that "coat"!
Someone may have mentioned this , but all of her songs are true stories of her life. I’ve heard so many people say that they never liked country music, but they love Dolly. How could you not?
she made a book based on this song that i loved as a kid. in fact, dolly has a book gifting program that provides children with free books. she is genuinely an amazing person.
My wife got me into Dolly. She so much more than a great musical artist, she’s a humanitarian, and philanthropist that humanity is lucky to have. We signed my daughter up for her book giveaway, and once a month for the first three years of her life, she will get a free age appropriate book from Dolly. What an excellent human she is.
This is a true story. When my Mom heard this song she made us coats from scraps of clothes she made us. I was embarrassed to wear it. I was sure we'd be made fun of. The opposite happened. My Mom got calls from Mom offering to pay her make a coat for their girls. My Mom politely said no. She only made them for us. I was so ashamed that I had ever been embarrassed ☮️
What I love most about Dolly is how dedicated she is to giving back to the world. She's been sending kids free books for decades and never asks to be credited. My little nephew loves his Dolly books and looks forward to the new one every month.

Polo- they made a fantastic movie about her childhood and it’s called “ Coat of Many Colors” too! She really grew up in a two room cabin with 8 siblings in Tennessee. Her Dad was a sharecropper.
Something else wonderful about Dolly that I haven't seen in the comments. She has literally given away millions of books to children. Any child under the age of 5 can receive a book from her on a monthly basis with no requirements other than age.

My wife is 75 and I 85. and many years ago I was known as Cousin Clem on the Hillbilly and Mountain Music Circuit long becore Gunner Piles. I even appeared with Roy Roger's a few times and other programs. But when my family was murdered February 6, 1972, It Changed my life Now I am just Raymond F. "Ray" Pittam the Advocate for the American Fallen Warriors. I wish with all my heart we could find a good Couple who would enjoy driving us in our Motor Home to Dollyville, and My wife could visit Miss Dolly for only ten minutes of her time. Ray Pittam, aka Cousin Clem Inc Clem Johnson long forgotten. I used to play on Printer's Alley with many other's who has been forgotten and many still known. I used to live just two Blocks from Minniee Pearl and the Governeors Mansion and several other big Named Entertainers just off Red Folly Blvd.
This cracked me up watching it. U said u love good story telling but not a fan of country music. My guy, that's exactly what country music is 💯! I'm glad u are broadening your horizons.
I can't listen to this song without bursting into tears. Never fails.
Grew up dirt poor too, 😢 unfortunately without the loving Mama. So this one always gets me blubbering by the end. 😉✌🏽🧓🏽
Dolly Parton 's " Coat of Many Colors" is Iconlc!!❤❤
Dolly is an icon she can do anything Glad I had the chance to meet her
