    • Dolly Parton - Coat Of...
Today on the channel, we are checking out Dolly Parton performing her song "Coat Of Many Colors." This is another one of those songs that really make you reflect and I love the foundational message behind this song. Even if you don't have any money, you can still be rich if you have love and people you care about. Dolly always gives me something to think about when I hear her music and it changes me for the better! Hope you enjoy! #reaction #dollyparton #dollypartonsongs #coatofmanycolors #70smusic #countryclassic #countrymusic #musicreactions

Oh my goodness. I never heard this one before and it brought back some tear-jerking memories. We were pretty poor growing up, mainly bc my father was still pretending to be in our lives, but he really wasn't. Mama never sewed me a coat but being the youngest of three boys, I got the hand-me-downs that were hand-me-downs. We got one pair of sneakers that had to last a whole year. Then by 13, me and my bros and mom were homeless. The family split even farther than my father leaving. One brother went to live at his best friend's house, the other brother did the same and mom and I lived with my best friend's family. But the real reason this song reminds me so much of the past is bc at Halloween time, we'd have to pull a ripped up box out of the attic with all the gear in it. Since we didn't want to go out as the same thing each year, mom would mix and match things and maybe sew different patches on things just to make it look a little different from last year. Shew-wee, Dolly, you done did it again. Got this old boy into his feelings again. I'm so grateful my mom is still around and actually for the first time in a long time, me and the 2 bros spent the day with mom just yesterday. It was a great day for sure. I just talked to her on the phone a lil bit ago but I'm def gonna call her again later.❤❤

You bring up this song alongside Harry Chapin's "Cats In The Cradle" as songs with life lessons. That's a great observation because life's trials and tribulations was often a source for music whether in Rock, Country, Pop, R&B, etc. While there are some artists today that do this also (Chris Stapleton immediately comes to mind), it's more often not in the same way. Today, when we do hear such songs, they are more often songs of personal triumph as opposed to sadness or pain, which were popular themes back then because life is not always about triumph and so songs about heartache and pain were important to help us get through those times, not in telling us to get over it, but to tell us that we're not alone in feeling such things, which can be what we need to muster the strength to get back up. Almost everyone from those times has a sad song that they cling to as one that helped them get over some difficult time. Even love songs are kind of rare today.
I work with some Gen Z kids and one day I was playing an old school mellow playlist and a love song came on (I think it was from Ambrosia) which everyone loved. Two of the guys came up to me to ask what the songs were and how they wish they knew how to say those kinds of things to a girl. I was stunned but then I realized that they have no point of reference like we did in those old songs. Back then when I was a teen, most guys dismissed them as "chick music" but we knew them just the same because they were on the radio everywhere. There are some today but not many. I think young people today have a hard time dealing with negative emotions because it's often about personal triumph or "look at how great or strong I am" today whether in song or in social media, even if it's faked. Songs with life lessons about regret or challenges can teach us to recognize those things before it's too late, such as in "Cats In The Cradle" or taking pride in humble but important things that come from love like "Coat of Many Colors". That's important.

Dolly's maternal grandfather was a preacher ... so yes, she was raised in a very religious home. Please watch the two movies that they made of her and her song. The first one was Coat of Many Colors ... and the other one was Christmas: Circle of Love. Oh, it does tell you also about why she loves puffy hair and long nails and beautiful clothing. You'll find out, in the movie, of who she took that look from ;) One of her most famous song was 'I Will Always Love you' and here is the video where she tells about how that song came to be. BTW, Whitney Houston sang it in the movie The Bodyguard. Funny how people are shocked when they find out it was a Dolly original. th-cam.com/video/jr8tffNHJno/w-d-xo.html Also, when she wrote the song for 9 to 5 (which she wrote while she was in that movie - her first movie) and it does say on the credits of that song ... Nails by Dolly Parton .. as she used her nails to sound like an old typewriter. th-cam.com/video/UbxUSsFXYo4/w-d-xo.html

Dolly Parton is a country legend who has been recording & writing songs since the 60's. Love her storytelling songs the most like "Jolene" & "Coat Of Many Colors". She has had so many hits such as "Yellow Roses", "My Tennessee Mountain Home", "Here You Come Again", "9 To 5" etc. She did a lot of great duets with Kenny Rogers & Porter Wagoner. She also collaborated with Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris & they released a few "Trio" albums.

It's a true story, will a bit of story-telling magic. Dolly is 😘. Speaking of her nails, you might take a listen to her "9 to 5". She wrote it for the movie she made, "9 to 5" ( 1980) with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Jane Fonda says Dolly first sang it for them using her nails for rhythm. Dolly said she thought it sounded like typewriter keys and seemed appropriate for a movie about secretaries. So----maybe a little Shania Twain, hmm?

Dolly Parton has always found family and friends to be her greatest treasure. This is an Original Dolly song about how she was raised. She actually had several siblings and her sister chose Gospel music while Dolly went Country.
Many people know of DollyWood, but not her humanity and charity. She also donated to Vanderbilt University for the Covid19 vaccines.
You will never be able to react to everything she has done. She has a record under seal to be released in 2045.

Dolly says the original coat was used for various other purposes but her mother did make a new one to use on display in her Chasing Rainbows Museum at Dollywood. (Porter Wagoner also donated the framed dry cleaning receipt - on which Parton composed the song - to the museum, where it now hangs.)

If you've never watched the 1989 movie "Steel Magnolias," you might want to look it up and watch it. If you think you like Dolly, already, just wait. The movie involves a group of ladies, of whom, Dolly is one. I watched the movie the first time, with another group of ladies...my mom, my sister, my first two daughters, and my baby daughter by my second (and forever) husband. Judi was too young to remember seeing the movie that time, but over the years, she got used to seeing it more than once, as well. Now, of course, I could only be looking at it from the viewpoint of a (still fairly young) woman, back then, but...David loves the movie, also.
As for this reaction? GO, STEVEN! Thank you very much! 😀
Oh...and again...don't forget "God Only Knows" where For King and Country do DOLLY'S arrangement of THEIR song...WITH HER. 😀

It was so cool to hear you talk about your faith in Christ! It really is important to be authentic. I have a Karaoke channel on TH-cam where I do many different genres of music, mostly 70's and 80's rock, but I also throw in some contemporary Christian songs as well. I don't shy away from my faith, no matter what people think. Granted, I don't have a lot of followers, and I don't make any money from my videos, but that's okay. Maybe one day I will, but for now, I just do them for fun. I do them for basically 2 reasons. One is that I love to sing, dance, and entertain. The other is that I like to honor the Lord with the gift that He gave me. Sure, the Christian songs aren't the most popular, but that doesn't really matter to me. I kind of look at things like Prince did. I do the kind of music I want to do, and if people like it, that's just icing on the cake! Keep up the good work, and keep fighting the good fight!
