She built Dollywood in the mountains to give her family, her friends and "her people" jobs. They have one of the largest eagle rescue facilities at Dollywood. Of course she is know as the book lady for giving away millions of books to young children in honor of her father that never learned to read and write.
Elvis wasn't involved in the negotiations & Dolly doesn't know if he knew why the deal fell through. She said, the day before Elvis was to record it, Col. Thank you, finally, the all heart version vs. Whitney’s power ballad. This song is the best resignation letter. Seeing Dolly in concert and her always thanking Whitney for making it larger for her, she always pays her respect. In my life I’ve been to many concerts, greats, but hers will always be the top one; just a stool, her guitar and her people; heart, laughs, and tears.
Whitney was an incredible singer for the ages ... but not a songwriter. Dolly is a unique talent in terms of writing incredible melodies and lyrics (and I say this as a jazz fan). There is no denying the power of Whitney’s version - but when you listen to the heartfelt angst and dynamics of Dolly ... simply amazing.
Perfect assessment. I always felt that when Whitney sang it, she was really saying I will always love my great voice. When Dolly sang it, I felt as if Dolly really loved me.
She did a performance of this after Whitney while on a late night talk show, and she ended it, “always love you, Whitney!”

I'm sure there are others who mentioned this. Dolly got her first big break on the Porter Wagner show. As time went on and more and more people began to appreciate her talents she found herself in the position of leaving the show to seek greater fortunes. She struggled with how she was going to tell Porter after all the things he did for her. So she wrote this song for him. In this case she was singing it to Porter. So take the time to listen to the words again in this context and the song becomes even more powerful.

Wagoner was initially furious that she wanted to leave, which prompted her to write the song.

Elvis wanted to record it, but Col. Parker wanted publishing. She was like Hell Nah...
Dolly was very disappointed that Elvis didn't record it, but Col. Parker demanded 50% of the publishing rights (to a song that Dolly had already taken to #1 on the Country charts!), so she had to turn the deal down. Dolly said Priscilla later told her, Elvis loved the song & that he was quietly singing it to her, as they left the courthouse following their divorce.
Think about this too. This was a time when women were not expected to write their own music, certainly not in country music. And this song was written to Porter Waggoner who was her writing partner and (I stand corrected!). She was saying “goodbye because I know you want to be in charge but I need to be in charge of my own life and my own art. But I will always love you. “ It’s just beautiful. And strong.
Porter and Dolly were never lovers. They were good friends and he helped start her career, so more of a mentor than anything.she was always a great flirt, especially with Kenny Rogers.

That's a true story most people don't realize. And I believe it was his choice to cast Whitney too.
Kevin also convinced the record company to let her sing the beginning accapella. Whitney said she could not sing a song she didnot feel or understand. Because they had such a good relationship she finally told Kevin she understood this song and she knew how to sing it. Summary: This is a song about leaving somebody that you are really in love with and not being a part of their life, but loving them without ending.
The only thing that you said that was incorrect was that Dolly was involved romantically with who the song is about. Porter Wagoner was Dolly’s mentor and helped give her her big break when she was an unknown singer and songwriter. It was written more of a sign of appreciation for supporting her and that she showed the same appreciation towards him. He wanted her to continue to be a success and she wanted him to do the same thing. Plus Dolly was already married by the time she wrote the song, same guy of over 50 years.

I may be in the minority here and maybe its because I'm from Tennessee but I like Dolly's version better. I also thought it was a Whitney Huston original and didn't hear the Dolly version till later. I still do love the Whitney version.

During the same period, Parton founded the Imagination Library in 1995: The idea being that children from her rural hometown and low-income families often start school at a disadvantage and as a result, will be unfairly compared to their peers for the rest of their lives, effectively encouraging them not to pursue higher education. The objective of the Imagination library was that every child in Sevier County would receive one book, every month, mailed and addressed to the child, from the day they were born until the day they started kindergarten, 100% free of charge. What began as a hometown initiative now serves children in all 50 states, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, mailing thousands of free books to children around the world monthly.
On March 1, 2018 Parton donated her 100 millionth book at the Library of Congress: a copy of "Coat of Many Colors" dedicated to her father, who never learned to read or write.

You are right. Dolly seems so pure. What I get from Dolly's version of this song, she makes it sound like she is singing directly to you and she means every word of what she is singing.
She is definitely a treasure. She just donated a million dollars to covid research, but it goes even farther back. She built Dollywood in the mountains to give her family, her friends and "her people" jobs. They have one of the largest eagle rescue facilities at Dollywood. Of course she is know as the book lady for giving away millions of books to young children in honor of her father that never learned to read and write.
