I am the youngest of 10 kids my Dad was a lifelong soldier and we were poor but I didn't know it. My Daddy loved Dolly Parton and this song still makes me tear up.
Kym, I have a similar story grew up in poor family but never realized it until was old enough to take care of myself mom and dad plus 6 kids living 1 bedroom duplex sleeping in a screened in porch with three brothers while sisters shared a bed in living room next to dining table but never went hungry and always had new school clothes at start of school year amazing what they managed to do, I don't think I could of done it
It took an unimaginable amount of hard work and determination for Dolly Parton to lift herself out of poverty & achieve the fame & success that she has. Tons of talent, too. Nothing was handed to her on a silver platter. A friend of mine who grew up near her said that people laughed at her & thought she just had some kind of crazy imagination when she proclaimed that she was going to be a star. It was not an easy road for her, but guess who's laughing now.
The best part about this song is that it is based on a true story in Dolly's life. Dolly actually got made fun of for showing up to school in a coat that was sewed together by her mom.
I remember watching a special on TV where her mother told the story from her point of view. I wonder now what show that was (it might have been a Christmas special they did that had all of Dolly's sisters on it singing, Idk).
Especially here in Knox and Sevier counties!! There are so many local stories of her around here. Seems like everyone knew Dolly. She's like everyone's friend here.
I am from Tennessee and Know what you mean.I was literally the only kid(besides my sisters) that only wore shoes to school and church,and I didn't have shoes in summer.They got taken away when school ended and given back when school started and they were too small because I grew over Summer.I got new ones at Christmas.Everyone off time from school in summer,but that was the time to work the 2 acre garden,then canning season,berry picking and foraging so we could eat.
Ms. Dolly definitely has a very unique, beautiful voice. There will never be another like her. She did come from a very, very poor background, but now gives to much to others.

I am so happy I found you last week. I see our Savior in your eyes. I am number 4 in a family of ten children, I promise you I never heard the word poor in our household. We lived with our parents in a one bedroom apartment, in Manhattan, NY. We all made good with the help of hand-me-downs. I was teased by a boy who's sister was my benefactor of her hand me downs. My Dad sometimes worked three jobs to get us all through Catholic grammar and HS. He paid tuition for every one of us. So much to tell, but I won't go on. I'm now 73 and raised 4 of my own. Ty, I wanted to explain why Dolly wears the BIG blonde wigs, red lipstick and makes herself up to look somewhat animated. When Dolly was a little girl she loved colorful/flashy things but her family was very poor. Therefore, she had to settle for whatever her family could provide like so many of us have to do. But, the main thing I wanted you to know about...one day, as a little girl, she went to town with her dad and she saw a lady with peroxide blonde hair, heavy makeup, red lipstick and she was wearing a red dress. When Dolly saw her, she ask her dad, “who’s that?” Her dad replied, “that’s trash!” Then Dolly said, “well, I want to be trash when I grow up then.” And now, as an adult, she’s said MANY MANY times during her long career. “it costs A LOT of money to look this cheap!” LOL
This song always makes me tear up. My mom was from southern kentucky, and I spent a lot of my early years there, this is reality, Dolly captures it perfectly, from her own life. I don't think there's any other song that hits me like this one does.
Our father gambled his paycheck weekly. Living in the burbs we felt like imposters as our mother was forced to shop Salvation Army and Goodwill. Being poor is not just for barrios or ghettos.

In 1995, Dolly Parton started a non-profit charitable organization called the Imaginary Library. Where she would give books away to children in her hometown of Tennessee. Since then, she gives books to children all over the world. She recently celebrated her 100 millionth book give away. To celebrate that honor. She read to children, while in the Library of Congress.
So glad, you reviewed a Dolly Parton performance. I'm 53, and the older I get, the more I respect and love her. That woman just keeps moving forward, having fun and working to help others. My husband was born in 1946 in the Cumberland Mountains, and lived on a subsistence farm with his Mom, Dad and sixteen brothers and sisters. None of his brothers ever entered the coal mines. Four of them came to Michigan to work for the auto companies. So far as being rich, he and I have a paid off house, a marriage of almost forty years and we are rich beyond compare with our little dog chasing squirrels in the backyard as we watch the birds, grow our garden and flowers and enjoy the kids and grandkids. What WE are doing IS the American Dream and I only wish people knew how absolutely lucky I feel because I've learned that people just don't "need" all the cars, clothes, shoes, toys, etc. That's just marketing. I hope you are as lucky in your future. It's fun to watch your face as you hear these songs because sometimes I know the words and you don't and your expressions are endearing as you learn the meaning of the song. I'm in my 50s (ahem) and I've listened to her since I was 7. I've liked many of her songs over the years but to me, there's always something special when she sings gospel songs (He's Alive, There, Shine and many others). Recently she sang with for King and Country "God Only Knows" which is amazing song, even more so knowing she's in her 70's and still singing.

Good message from you. I never had new clothes as a kid. I wore my sister's and cousin's clothes and they never fit. But I knew my mom put me first and I was grateful that I was lucky enough to have someone love me. That was my blessing. A child needs that, not fancy shoes.

Dolly’s a legend. Hand me downs were definatly a big thing in my household with 3 sons and only her that worked bc my dad was disabled and couldn’t work. I learned a lot from her she was definatly my hero and wish she was still here with us.

My grandmother grew up dirt poor in the mountains of southwestern Virginia and she had coats like the one described in this song. I grew up poor. Been poor most of my life and when I was a kid I went to school with holes in my jeans and shoes and shirt. I would get 1 pair of shoes , 1 pair of jeans and a couple of shirts each year to start school and I did not get another pair of shoes until the next year. I was not DIRT POOR ( DIRT POOR came from the term of having a DIRT FLOOR in your house ) but I was poor. I can relate.

That song is a true story about her life as a child . Her coat of many colors is in the museum in Dollywood along with the song she wrote . There are alot of wonderful things in the museum that show her life through the years . She is a very loving friendly down to earth person.
I wish all parents would teach their children not to judge the others children in school for the way they look. We had three kids and at times money was tight. I didn't feel that young kids needed to wear top of the line clothing. When they reached middle school I put more money into their clothes to a point. My daughter had high end taste so I hit the clearance racks first. It took me about two years to realize my oldest son waspicking out the cheapest brands even in shoes. I sat him down and ask him why, was it really what he wanted didn't he want Mike or Levi's. He told me mama I know you don't have alot of money so I just get the cheaper stuff. It broke my heart. Needless to say I took him shopping and bought him as nice as I dressed his sister. To this day he is still the most giving man I know. Just wanted to share. God Bless

I grew up in poverty, and my mom sewed my clothes until I was 12. She handmade meals for us too, and taught me to cook. I relate so hard to this song. I remember picking out which patterns I wanted at the fabric store, so I had the clothes I wanted. You have to be vulnerable to open up on a public platform like this, and Dolly aired all the laundry in a way that is really beautiful. You don't have to have money to make your kids feel loved. You just have to love your kids, they'll get it.
She is a wonderful musician, a wonderful woman, and one of the nicest people you will ever meet... As you are amazed at meeting her, she is genuinely interested in you and wants to know about you and your life. She is a treasure.

I love Dolly! Did you know that she got her style from the town " tramp " ? She thought she was so beautiful so that's where her flamboyant style came from. She is amazing. Two of my favorites videos by him is " Church parking lot road rage" and a " Bible verse for every occasion". Two more good clean Christians comedians are Tim Hawkins and Anita Renfroe. I remember listening to Dolly when I was a kid. I would cry when I heard this song when it talked about the kids making fun of her coat. My mom grew up in the mountains of east Tennessee the oldest of 12 kids so she always loved Dolly. My mom told me stories of how that when her father went to buy flour they would get him to look for the flour sack patterns that matched the ones they already had so they would have enough material to make the girls' dresses. Her summers were spent gardening and canning for the coming winter. The family would pick beans by hand for the Stockley company to make a little money for things they couldn't make themselves. My mom always could take what was to most people thought was trash and make wonderful things from it. She knew how to make do as people used to say.

Dolly is more of a story teller in many of her songs. This one is relatable to many of us. I wore the hand-me-downs of my cousins. I used to say that I started school in 1968, but some of my clothes started in 1958. Mama would have to alter and repair a few and pieces of them would end up in a quilt. Those old quilts remind me of Mama and those hand-me-downs and the cousins that wore them before me.
Dolly is from a town about an hour from me. Not long ago it caught on fire and Dolly took care of everyone until they got on their feet. She also sends all the toddlers in Tennessee books up till they are like 4 or 5 if you can't afford them. She has Dollywood for everyone too. We absolutely love her. I remember my daughter went to help the people after the fire. We were broken hearted that happened to her area.

The way Dolly was raised is very real to us in Southeast Kentucky and where she was raised in east Tennessee. Dolly had worked hard and used her God given talent to be a success. She has done great things for the people of East Tennessee and the world.

I have relatives in Knoxville TN close to where Dolly grew up and avid fans of hers forever. They told me when she made it big she went back to her high school and gave a concert and all those former kids that made fun of her were just sittin back in envy of her
Dolly and Loretta Lynn both were born and raised in extreme poverty in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee (Dolly) and Kentucky (Loretta). And yep. Sometimes food and most of the time clothing and shoes were scarce. This song she wrote, because it is what she experienced, growing up. If you get a chance, watch her movie The Coat of Many Colors, about a period in her life when she was little girl. Several stars plays in it. and country music singer, Jenifer Nettles, plays her mother. It is really a good movie and shows the spunky spirit that Dolly has always had. My favorite scene was her hiding out in the barn, painting her face with paint, she snuck out of school, so she could look like the pretty women that she had seen in town. Her family left for church, no realizing she was not with them. So she took her guitar and walked to church, went right in the front doors and down the center isle to sing for the congregation. Everyone about passed out, when they saw her. But she held her little head high and just walked right down that isle anyway. She was just a little girl and lived in a culture that respectable women did NOT wear makeup. Her granddaddy was the preacher. lol It was so funny. And she says it was a true event.

My husband was born in 1946 in the Cumberland Mountains, and lived on a subsistence farm with his Mom, Dad and sixteen brothers and sisters. None of his brothers ever entered the coal mines. Four of them came to Michigan to work for the auto companies. So far as being rich, he and I have a paid off house, a marriage of almost forty years and we are rich beyond compare with our little dog chasing squirrels in the backyard as we watch the birds, grow our garden and flowers and enjoy the kids and grandkids. What WE are doing IS the American Dream and I only wish people knew how absolutely lucky I feel because I've learned that people just don't "need" all the cars, clothes, shoes, toys, etc. That's just marketing. I hope you are as lucky in your future. It's fun to watch your face as you hear these songs because sometimes I know the words and you don't and your expressions are endearing as you learn the meaning of the song. I'm in my 50s (ahem) and I've listened to her since I was 7. I've liked many of her songs over the years but to me, there's always something special when she sings gospel songs (He's Alive, There, Shine and many others). Recently she sang with for King and Country "God Only Knows" which is amazing song, even more so knowing she's in her 70's and still singing.

My sister, our husbands, and parents had the pleasure of seeing her perform live in Little Rock, and she is the just like you would think. Lovely, funny, talented, and she put on the best show ever!

Dolly’s a legend. Hand me downs were definatly a big thing in my household with 3 sons and only her that worked bc my dad was disabled and couldn’t work. I learned a lot from her she was definatly my hero and wish she was still here with us.

My grandmother grew up dirt poor in the mountains of southwestern Virginia and she had coats like the one described in this song. I grew up poor. Been poor most of my life and when I was a kid I went to school with holes in my jeans and shoes and shirt. I would get 1 pair of shoes , 1 pair of jeans and a couple of shirts each year to start school and I did not get another pair of shoes until the next year. I was not DIRT POOR ( DIRT POOR came from the term of having a DIRT FLOOR in your house ) but I was poor. I can relate.

She is a prolific storyteller, songwriter, singer, & musician. I'm so glad my dad is a huge fan of hers since before my birth. So I was lucky to have grown up listening to her melodic voice. Let's not skip over the fact that she played her guitar effortlessly with those long manicured nails...she had guitar picks on each finger.

That song is a true story about her life as a child . Her coat of many colors is in the museum in Dollywood along with the song she wrote . There are alot of wonderful things in the museum that show her life through the years . She is a very loving friendly down to earth person.
I wish all parents would teach their children not to judge the others children in school for the way they look. We had three kids and at times money was tight. I didn't feel that young kids needed to wear top of the line clothing. When they reached middle school I put more money into their clothes to a point. My daughter had high end taste so I hit the clearance racks first. It took me about two years to realize my oldest son waspicking out the cheapest brands even in shoes. I sat him down and ask him why, was it really what he wanted didn't he want Mike or Levi's. He told me mama I know you don't have alot of money so I just get the cheaper stuff. It broke my heart. Needless to say I took him shopping and bought him as nice as I dressed his sister. To this day he is still the most giving man I know. Just wanted to share. God Bless

I grew up in poverty, and my mom sewed my clothes until I was 12. She handmade meals for us too, and taught me to cook. I relate so hard to this song. I remember picking out which patterns I wanted at the fabric store, so I had the clothes I wanted. You have to be vulnerable to open up on a public platform like this, and Dolly aired all the laundry in a way that is really beautiful. You don't have to have money to make your kids feel loved. You just have to love your kids, they'll get it.

I love Dolly! Did you know that she got her style from the town " tramp " ? She thought she was so beautiful so that's where her flamboyant style came from. She is amazing. Two of my favorites videos by him is " Church parking lot road rage" and a " Bible verse for every occasion". Two more good clean Christians comedians are Tim Hawkins and Anita Renfroe. Dolly is an angel who has helped so many. I was born in Gatlinburg TN and still live in the county. Dolly was born next door in Sevierville. Same county. Look up Imagination Library.
I remember listening to Dolly when I was a kid. I would cry when I heard this song when it talked about the kids making fun of her coat. My mom grew up in the mountains of east Tennessee the oldest of 12 kids so she always loved Dolly. My mom told me stories of how that when her father went to buy flour they would get him to look for the flour sack patterns that matched the ones they already had so they would have enough material to make the girls' dresses. Her summers were spent gardening and canning for the coming winter. The family would pick beans by hand for the Stockley company to make a little money for things they couldn't make themselves. My mom always could take what was to most people thought was trash and make wonderful things from it. She knew how to make do as people used to say.

Dolly is more of a story teller in many of her songs. This one is relatable to many of us. I wore the hand-me-downs of my cousins. I used to say that I started school in 1968, but some of my clothes started in 1958. Mama would have to alter and repair a few and pieces of them would end up in a quilt. Those old quilts remind me of Mama and those hand-me-downs and the cousins that wore them before me.
Dolly is from a town about an hour from me. Not long ago it caught on fire and Dolly took care of everyone until they got on their feet. She also sends all the toddlers in Tennessee books up till they are like 4 or 5 if you can't afford them. She has Dollywood for everyone too. We absolutely love her. I remember my daughter went to help the people after the fire. We were broken hearted that happened to her area.

I have relatives in Knoxville TN close to where Dolly grew up and avid fans of hers forever. They told me when she made it big she went back to her high school and gave a concert and all those former kids that made fun of her were just sittin back in envy of her
Dolly and Loretta Lynn both were born and raised in extreme poverty in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee (Dolly) and Kentucky (Loretta). And yep. Sometimes food and most of the time clothing and shoes were scarce. This song she wrote, because it is what she experienced, growing up. If you get a chance, watch her movie The Coat of Many Colors, about a period in her life when she was little girl. Several stars plays in it. and country music singer, Jenifer Nettles, plays her mother. It is really a good movie and shows the spunky spirit that Dolly has always had. My favorite scene was her hiding out in the barn, painting her face with paint, she snuck out of school, so she could look like the pretty women that she had seen in town. Her family left for church, no realizing she was not with them. So she took her guitar and walked to church, went right in the front doors and down the center isle to sing for the congregation. Everyone about passed out, when they saw her. But she held her little head high and just walked right down that isle anyway. She was just a little girl and lived in a culture that respectable women did NOT wear makeup. Her granddaddy was the preacher. lol It was so funny. And she says it was a true event.
At Dollywood....Dolly's Mama made another coat of many colors out of small bits of cloth.... it is on display because so many people are touched by that song... I think her Mama was well into her 90s when she was called home...
