    If you guys didn’t know, this song is something that really happened to Dolly. My mom grew up poor in Tennessee back in the 50’s, and the same thing happened to my mom. This song always makes me cry. Dolly is a treasure. 👍

      Seems Tennessee has had its fair share of growing up poor. I'm just a little younger than your Mama but I'm sure we'd have similar memories. Lots of love to you from an old Tennessee lady. 💞💞💞🙏🙏🙏

      My Mama grew up in West Tennessee in the 50's & 60's (She was born in '51). I guess they were poor as they wore flour sack dresses a lot growing up that my Grandmother made for them. They got electricity in about 1955 and indoor plumbing around 1959. They farmed and Grandaddy also later got work at Holley Carburetor in Paris. I do know they were the first ones for miles around to get a tv set and Mama said every Saturday the house would be packed with neighbors coming over to watch the fights on tv. Grandmother grew up as a sharecropper sleeping on what she called a "pallet" in a loft reached by a wood ladder and often all they had to eat were wild greens (Or as Grandmother derisively called them, Weeds) Mama said they made their own soap from rendered hog fat and ash (I assume the ash was for the lye) They heated the house with a double fireplace up until the year before I was born when they got a wood stove in the living room. Even then if it hadn't been for the old 4 stack heaters in the other rooms when I was a kid, you couldn't have been in them long without freezing. Not that they used them much as you could nearly see your breath in front of your face at night and no heat at all in the upstairs which was one big unfinished room, but it had a big featherbed in it with so many quilts on it that once you got in you couldn't move much, lol. In 1994 they retired the wood stove and got a propane stove for the living room and a propane wall heater for the kitchen but still had those same old stack heaters in the bathroom and 1 bedroom. The big bedroom was STILL heated with the other side of that double fireplace and in the mornings you'd get up fast as you could and go get dressed in the living room where it was warm, LOL! Grandaddy passed on in '96 and Grandmother sold the farm in '98 and moved to Paris in a new but much smaller house with central heat & air. She passed on in 2014. If I ever win the lottery I'm gonna buy the old place back again. Great Grandaddy built it himself in 1921. Before that he lived in an old log cabin that sat behind the house he built.

    She grew up dirt poor then got filthy rich and gives much to many! What a wonderful singer and an amazing spirit she has. We need more people like her. Employees at her theme park are getting their higher education paid for by her. What a 🎁

    The real coat was passed down to others in the family until it finally disintegrated from so much wear, but a replica can be seen in her museum at Dollywood, her theme park in Tennessee. For anyone looking for a great place to go, its a blast and a side note any employee who works there and wants to go to college, Dolly pays 100% of all costs to.

    • @wnsafford1854
      @wnsafford1854 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just to add, the replica coat was also made by Dolly's mother, so it's as close to the original as one could get. Dolly mentioned it on Phil Donahue, shortly before the opening of Dollywood.

    True story. Can a song get any more emotional? I enjoyed your wife getting emotional thru the song...... she was next to tears. Dolly Parton is the real deal, an angel from heaven doing good work. She is very generous with her fame and her money. I don't know how a human being can be any more beautiful than Dolly Parton. She has never forgotten where she came from, day in and day out. Enjoyed your reaction, TY

    Loretta Lynn Coal Miner's Daughter MyMom was the daughter of a Coal Miner. Her father was killed in an accident in 1940. This song held a lot of meaning for my mom and our whole family. Loretta was another great in the country music world. If you would react (maybe with your wife?)

      @ Larry Brantley My grandfather was a coal miner for a very long time so my mom was a huge fan of Loretta Lynn. Any time coal miners daughter came on, mom would smile and sing along saying this is my song. Mom passed away 3 months ago so I had to add that song to my play list now it makes me smile!!!

    I have been very very poor for the vast majority of my life. My family was only able to have second hand clothes and we were looked down upon many many people in our community. I will always remember that my classmates teachers and professors made fun of me for being poor and having clothes that were obviously not new.
    I vowed that after I graduated from College with my Masters Degree in Agricultural Economics I would find a job that would provide me with the funds to have nice clothes and shoes. I am determined that my children will get a great education and have nice clothes and shoes. This particular song hits very very close to home with me. Hearing it makes me she'd tears and cry like a baby.

    Being from Tennessee and born to parents whose early life was spent in the Appalachia Mountains in Kentucky, I have a great love for Dolly. I declare my Mama talked like Dolly and told the best stories and the best laugh just like Dolly. I didn't inherit the story telling gene. This song came out when I was about seven. We were poor. Mama put this song on as she was sewing a quilt from rags. After the song she told me the story from the Bible about Joseph's coat of many colors. We didn't have doodly squat but there was more love in our home than anyones, at least that's what I thought. I'd rather be poor and have Mama than all the riches. I think Dolly felt and still even with all her millions feels the same.

    Dolly has a beautiful song she calls “Down From Dover”. She wrote it in 1969 or 1970. It’s not about her life experience, but it is an experience a lot of young ladies of her era did experience. Although she didn’t experience it personally, she’s telling you a story. It’s a sad story. Due to the subject matter, this song couldn’t be released as a single.

    I was Dolly...only my coat was actually a bookbag I needed for school because we couldn't afford a backpack. I feel this song in my soul. Kids can be so cruel. I am old now, and wish I still had that beautiful patchwork bookbag. Back then I was embarrassed by it, but right now I would cherish it.

    a little 'fun fact'...Elvis wanted to cover a song of hers, however Col. Parker(his mgr)wanted Elvis to have 1/2 of the publishing rights: Dolly said no...she later said she actually cried the night she had to turn Elvis down....and, said she SO wanted to hear Elvis sing...'I will Always Love You'..

    • @wnsafford1854
      @wnsafford1854 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dolly lays it all on Col. Parker. She said she didn't know if Elvis ever knew why it fell through. Dolly even had family in from out-of-town, to watch Elvis record it (which Parker knew). Parker called her the night before recording (!), demanding 1/2 the publishing rights, probably thinking he had her boxed into a corner. Dolly said, if it hadn't already been a hit (#1 Country), she'd probably have done the deal. Much later, she met Priscilla, who told her how much Elvis loved the song, how disappointed he was that he couldn't record it & that he actually sang a couple of lines of it, in Priscilla's ear, as they were leaving the court house, following their divorce.

    And how Dolly told the story of her coat, from poverty, and casually wove in Joesph and his coat. God works in mysterious and small ways
