Their ability to think so deeply and speak their thoughts so fluently feels almost foreign to how most people are these days. Also how personable and friendly all of them are is Honestly special. I truly feel like people are slowly growing away from certain parts of humanity and it’s sad to see
Well to be fair these were the high and royal of their school, they got chosen between their entire country’s population and are considered highly intelligent. There definitely were lots of dirty people just like today, but I must admit the morals of the past were a lot better than today’s. With each generation, we become worse
It's the fact that today there's a lot more exposure. You can upload anything to the internet and everyone can see it freely. In the 50's people couldn't share their views through a tweet, instead through a camera or broadcast that was (usually) rehearsed or more professional. More often than not, it's easy to see the worst of people rather than the best especially in today's environment.
It's so sad to think that most of these people are really old right now or have passed away. These are truly remarkable students. I hope they lived very successful lives.

Ms Waller is such a great teacher, teaching the students well to explain their cultural differences, and to respect and not talk over each other…you can tell how good a teacher is by how well the students enjoy learning and being around each other

As much as I'm enamored of these young people of their time with their brilliance, open mindedness(for some) and eloquence. Let us not blander on a hasty generalization, thinking that all students of their time are like them. They were not part of the average students, so we shouldn't compare them with today's students in general. As in the previous video, it was mentioned that they were selected and won at their respective countries(most likely debate or the like). Looking at the topics and, this is only me inferring, I think this program was done to promote the united nations. They needed it so that people would have a better understand and be more understanding with each other. And I believe that we sure need this type of program again and not just for teenagers or college students, but young adults as well. If anything, (no matter what the political intentions were), this video is teaching us that a world devoid of dialog and sharing of ideas cannot foster true peace. This shows that we can talk about our difference without being passive aggressive or simply not speak at all, in fear of hurting someone's feelings.
There is internet, TH-cam, WhatsApp and all kinds of video communication tools available today. For anybody who wants to learn and communicate, so why do we need this kind of exchanges. Nothing has changed for other students in Africa and Asia, they are still articulate and know about the world and the Americans (all Americans black and white) and Europeans are still as ignorant, self centred and narcissistic as they were in the 1950's
Today there are United world colleges around the world. They bring in students from every country to study at same place. Many host more than 80 nationalities for 2 years program, you can check them online.
The student from Yugoslavia (1938-2020) was a very respected professor at the University of Belgrade, ambassador to Spain and one of the greatest socioligists of Hispano American society.
I believe my Spanish teacher (who also taught German and Serbo-Croatian at our high school) knew him. She held a doctorate degree, very active in linguistics and teaching. Lived in Yugoslavia for a bit before moving back to Pittsburgh, PA. She took hundreds of students on student exchange to Mexico

As a teen I don't see no change, in teens back then and now, on terms of conversation and idea. But today we don't really express ourselves too much for the fear of being laughed at, but back then it was normal.

Interesting info: Ms. Naila Ahmed is the daughter of Pakistani diplomat Aziz Ahmed who was the Ambassador to the US that year. She grew up to be a very beautiful woman and I wonder if she is still alive. Her father also was no fan of the dictator General Zia ul-Haq.
It felt wonderful to watch all these students exchange their ideas. The teacher also deserves a lot of appreciation for facilitating a wonderful dialogue without getting defensive when unflattering opinions were expressed against the host country.
She’s bold and feisty but couldn’t take criticisms. She aced in sarcasm. But in every where and everything, we must respect each other’s individuality as hers and everyone in that group.

As an Iranian watching this video made me a little sad . In past our education system was so much better than now. we had more freedom and Iran society used to respect teachers more than these days . I hope we can comeback to those days again and our students be happier 🙂
I think one of the many reasons those young adults were so comfortable and the atmosphere was so friendly is because all of them are from everywhere of the world. Because of the diversity everyone from everywhere could bring something valuable and contribute to this wonderful discussion. I experienced that same kind of friendly atmosphere in my own school where everyone in my class where from different nationalities (Turkey, India, Austria, America, Korea, Philippines, Nigeria, Egypt...). It felt like a big family. It was wonderful.
So sad, if our generation only had world leaders who even have half of the smartness and goodwill of these young fellows, our world today would be more peaceful and prosperous today!

While I don't know the context, it's probably safe to assume these are the smartest and brightest kids from their respective countries, and perhaps from at least upper-middle class families? Hence this group of "kids" are *_not_* representative of the entire teenage population in 1958.
A lot has been written about the intelligence of these then youngsters. But, Mrs Waller shines as a gem when in come to being so patient in listening to all of them, tactfully directing the discussions in the right way without being partisan or vocal about her own opinions. This clip reminded me so much of the friends from different countries I had made through different programs I had attended. The first memory that comes to my mind is when I represented Thailand twice in a Japanese Scholarships which one of that program I get to climb Mount Fuji and the other I had a Japanese host family until finally I had an opportunity to work for Walt Disney World in 2001 when I was 26. The statement that says the more you travel and see the world learning different people and cultures, the more perspectives you will get and it widens up our narrow minds is so true. IF only certain faculties, administrations, teachers and anyone who comes in contact with children in the school district in my area that serves about 70% military families would have an opportunity to watch this, this school would truly "embrace diversity and against discrimination" as they have in the student handbook but sadly doesn't practice. My 11 years as an on and off substitute teacher aide(was turned down 7 times from getting a full time positive because I'm an "outsider". I was born as half Thai half Philippine and became an official American in 2010 but lived in this area since 2005 and all my 3 special needs children attending this school so I would say it's fair enough to have a saying that I have seen it all and it's getting worst. I believe that time changes but values shouldn't. Many children had suffered is suffering and will continue to suffer because of those who are prejudice and ignorance. Trying to point out to the school that if children are being mistreated in any form of discrimination obviously their behavior will change but what many parents and myself get is that no body from the school wants to be accountable for these terrible incidents that are down right morally and legally wrong. And like anything in the world, the moment you blow the whistle or start speaking up on the truth, you get cut off like the school fired me when I addressed discrimination to the human resource of the district. It's easier to fire this Asian American than try to fix the problem. Education system failed because of how things are handled incorrectly and not in a timely manner. Not to mention the brainwashing that's going on inside the walls of this school. When the mental and emotional status is not balance, children can't strive. Certain children do bully but the scariest truth is that the adults are doing that on school property during school hours and many bystanders witnessed but chooses to put on blind eyes and deaf ears on. Oh wait, the education business is no longer about children anymore but it's all about doing anything to get as much children achieve good grades and/or bring fame of the school through some kind of sports so the school can get more fundings while just disregard children's mental and emotional well being. Before coronavirus, those mean, rude individuals are already bad and with coronavirus, they get even worst. I definitely will share this clip with my children. Forgive me for saying this but at this point of my life, I will borrow a quote from a wonderful close to 12 years neighbor who is a retired Veteran in the Navy that lost his eye sight last year from Panama, "I judge people accordingly" - Mr.Jim Garrett and as for me, "In God I trust, the rest wait in line."

Everyone in the comments wondering why no one behaves or talks like this anymore... well for one they didn’t have a screen to hide behind. They had to actually articulate their thoughts and feel their feelings and connect with other people face to face. Not just stuff everything to the back of their minds and let a screen distract them from feeling and thinking stuff through for themselves. They had real ideas and thoughts. And knew howww to talk about them. Oh and their attention span was more than 5 seconds. The phone and having instant gratification at all times takes away people’s ability to pay attention to something or someone. Obviously this is just one example (that could be explained better too) but it’s something I’ve gathered and realized.
The optimism which this engenders brings a tear to my eye when I think of these sensible young people proving that we are basically all the same yet the history of their countries since this was filmed has involved so many unnecessary wars and conflicts with each other and the U.S. They will all be a couple of years older than myself if not deceased but I hope the survivors retain the same balanced outlook shown here.

As a teen I don't see no change, in teens back then and now, on terms of conversation and idea. But today we don't really express ourselves too much for the fear of being laughed at, but back then it was normal.
Yes, I don't see much difference either. But today most teachers would scold the class for being too "loud" or excited.
All my classes are silent now, I miss it when they were loud and when my classmates were actually participating.

I think one of the many reasons those young adults were so comfortable and the atmosphere was so friendly is because all of them are from everywhere of the world. Because of the diversity everyone from everywhere could bring something valuable and contribute to this wonderful discussion. I experienced that same kind of friendly atmosphere in my own school where everyone in my class where from different nationalities (Turkey, India, Austria, America, Korea, Philippines, Nigeria, Egypt...). It felt like a big family. It was wonderful.
So sad, if our generation only had world leaders who even have half of the smartness and goodwill of these young fellows, our world today would be more peaceful and prosperous today!
The problem is ironically their generation is kind of responsible for this mess.

This clip reminded me so much of the friends from different countries I had made through different programs I had attended. The first memory that comes to my mind is when I represented Thailand twice in a Japanese Scholarships which one of that program I get to climb Mount Fuji and the other I had a Japanese host family until finally I had an opportunity to work for Walt Disney World in 2001 when I was 26. The statement that says the more you travel and see the world learning different people and cultures, the more perspectives you will get and it widens up our narrow minds is so true.
IF only certain faculties, administrations, teachers and anyone who comes in contact with children in the school district in my area that serves about 70% military families would have an opportunity to watch this, this school would truly "embrace diversity and against discrimination" as they have in the student handbook but sadly doesn't practice.
My 11 years as an on and off substitute teacher aide(was turned down 7 times from getting a full time positive because I'm an "outsider". I was born as half Thai half Philippine and became an official American in 2010 but lived in this area since 2005 and all my 3 special needs children attending this school so I would say it's fair enough to have a saying that I have seen it all and it's getting worst. I believe that time changes but values shouldn't.
Many children had suffered is suffering and will continue to suffer because of those who are prejudice and ignorance. Trying to point out to the school that if children are being mistreated in any form of discrimination obviously their behavior will change but what many parents and myself get is that no body from the school wants to be accountable for these terrible incidents that are down right morally and legally wrong. And like anything in the world, the moment you blow the whistle or start speaking up on the truth, you get cut off like the school fired me when I addressed discrimination to the human resource of the district. It's easier to fire this Asian American than try to fix the problem. Education system failed because of how things are handled incorrectly and not in a timely manner. Not to mention the brainwashing that's going on inside the walls of this school. When the mental and emotional status is not balance, children can't strive. Certain children do bully but the scariest truth is that the adults are doing that on school property during school hours and many bystanders witnessed but chooses to put on blind eyes and deaf ears on. Oh wait, the education business is no longer about children anymore but it's all about doing anything to get as much children achieve good grades and/or bring fame of the school through some kind of sports so the school can get more fundings while just disregard children's mental and emotional well being. Before coronavirus, those mean, rude individuals are already bad and with coronavirus, they get even worst.
I definitely will share this clip with my children. Forgive me for saying this but at this point of my life, I will borrow a quote from a wonderful close to 12 years neighbor who is a retired Veteran in the Navy that lost his eye sight last year from Panama, "I judge people accordingly" - Mr.Jim Garrett and as for me, "In God I trust, the rest wait in line."

The age of technology and media has probably diluted the unique perspective from different nationalities. Everyone with netflix around the world has watched squid game at the same time. Everyone with a facebook account has developed a mild form of dysfunction. We are slowly becoming a monolithic society.

Everyone in the comments wondering why no one behaves or talks like this anymore... well for one they didn’t have a screen to hide behind. They had to actually articulate their thoughts and feel their feelings and connect with other people face to face. Not just stuff everything to the back of their minds and let a screen distract them from feeling and thinking stuff through for themselves. They had real ideas and thoughts. And knew howww to talk about them. Oh and their attention span was more than 5 seconds. The phone and having instant gratification at all times takes away people’s ability to pay attention to something or someone. Obviously this is just one example (that could be explained better too) but it’s something I’ve gathered and realized.
USA needs to do more of these exchange programs again!
The optimism which this engenders brings a tear to my eye when I think of these sensible young people proving that we are basically all the same yet the history of their countries since this was filmed has involved so many unnecessary wars and conflicts with each other and the U.S. They will all be a couple of years older than myself if not deceased but I hope the survivors retain the same balanced outlook shown here.

Malaya includes only west Malaysia today. Singapore, west Malaysia, and east Malaysia, were all called Malaysia, until Singapore gained independence in 1965.
And neither Malaysia nor Indonesia didn't want anything to do with Singapore which tried multiple times to be a part of these countries.
