Mehmet II allowed Greeks to practice their own culture, language and religion. They didn't teach these things to them and they glorify their history as if they were sent by God to that land and they never killed anyone or did any conquests. They portray themselves as the victim all the time. We had 5 wars with Greeks during Turkish independance war. We won 4 of them and lost 1. It's funny how the Greeks considered themselves so superior. At that time, all countries were ruled by a monarchy, it is wrong for the Greek girl to criticize without taking this into account. This means that even if another country occupied it, the same results would be experienced. It is quite normal for every country to have a desire to expand its territory. We all know the cruelty and barbarism they tried to inflict on the Turks when the Greeks rose up and occupied the shores of Izmir. The Greeks failed to do this, just like other countries. For this reason, everyone has a grudge against the Turks.

The greek girl is probably of Turkish descent and descendant of those Turks who were translocated to Greece due to their Orthodox Christian faith in the 1920s treaty between Turkey and Greece. Maybe that's partly what drove her antipathy towards Turks as a collective judging from her tone. You'll find that when someone does not fully fit into a group of people he or she becomes more aggressive. Maybe that's her way of proving her loyalty to the Greeks.

If "to eat like a Turk" is used as an insult in Greece, then they know absolutely nothing about us. Do you know how much preparation goes to having a meal in a Turkish home? All of us take our shoes off (some switch to indoor shoes or slippers) right before we step in. Stereotypical Turkish mothers, grandmas and teyzes beat your ass if you don't wash your hands before a meal. Our elders always advise us to say "Bismillah" before taking a bite which is the Muslim way of thanking God. Finally, we have our own saying in Turkish "Ellerinize sağlık!" which means "May health come to your hands!", we use it to thank the cooks for our meal. "May good health come to your hands that have prepared us this meal". I find it funny how people who hate us have come up with these super unrealistic ways to feed their own ego, when they know nothing about how much Turkish culture values hygiene and cuisine.

Fun fact, the pirates the kid from Iceland is talking about. The ones that came from Algeria and raided northern countries. They were not Turks. They were westerners. See, during the Spanish/British war, a lot of Dutch and English sailors worked for the Royal Navy as "privateers." They would pirate Spanish ships for the British. Then one day the Spain and Brittain made peace. And these pirates were kinda out of a job. So a bunch of them just started joining the Barbary Corsairs. Who were in turn privateers who worked for the Ottoman sultan. These privateers were essentially part of the Ottoman navy but had considerable freedom. E.g. Their leaders had autonomy and their own cities/port towns they got to rule over (literal pirate towns). They would raid ships that were at war with the Ottomans, and often the crew would be enslaved to row in Ottoman boats, or they'd be sold. The galley slaves would often also end up converting and joining the Barbary Corsairs and some of them even became famous captains. Anyway, so these Dutch and English pirates start joining the Corsairs, some of them convert to Islam and even change their name. Many of them would just go back to their home countries to recruit more men. Like Dutch privateers in the Barbary corsairs would often go to the Netherlands so they could hire themselves entirely Dutch crews of sailors. Many of whom, in turn, also rose in the ranks of the Corsairs. The Turkish, North African, and Middle Eastern Pirates generally wouldn't sail all the way to the northern edge of the world. This was more a thing that Dutch and British sailors did. They would visit their home country and recruit a bunch of sailors. Then, raid the norther countries and sail back to North Africa.
EDIT: A "Young Turk" in English means someone who goes against the Establishment and established rules. Often used for more liberal / progressive young and ambitious people who want change.
And the Greek girl saying that the rights of minorities in Turkey aren't respected is kinda hilarious. Even today, if the Turkish minority in western Thrace calls themselves Turks, they are sent to jail. I wish I was joking, but Greece denies they are Turks and demands everyone, including they themselves, call them "Greek Muslims." The "Muslim Greeks" also aren't allowed to pick their own religious representatives. So they secretly select their own religious leaders for which they then get persecuted. When 2 Greek Journalist of Turkish descend wrote an article that said they should have the right to choose their own religious leader. They were sued with if I remember correctly a decade of jail (I don't remember how the trail went).
They would force Turks from their own lands, claim they had to survey the land. Then they'd give the land "protected historical" status, which meant the farmers weren't allowed to come back to their lands.
Greece respecting minorities and minority rights is a joke. Esp back then. But even today, it's hilarious that an EU nation can get away with just denying an entire ethnic groups right to identify with their own ethnicity. They deny their entire existence. Turkey tried claiming Kurds were "mountain Turks" in the 1930's in an effort to assimilate them. But today, that's seen as a dark page in our history books. A 100 years later, Greece is still at it.

WOW! Thanks for clarifying. As a Turk I thought I knew my history fairly well. The level of prejudice from an Iclander didn't make sense to me. Ottomans didn't have presence there. The double standard for mistreating ethnic groups is real. Everyone has done it one way or another. The amount of lies that were told to the ANZAC about the Turks to get them to fight for Great Brittan were insane.

1/3 of the Turkish population in the Balkans who lived there for 500 years perished during the Balkan Wars. Most of them were either targeted directly or were forced to march and fell to disease. There was no mercy towards the civilian Turkish population because they had been painted as oppressors. The killings were not only ignored but celebrated as breaking the chains of tyranny. Barely documented. Barely noticed. The remaining were forced to leave and a small portion somehow managed to stay. This was a complete ethnic cleansing portrayed as fights for independence. A much repeated slogan of the time was to "drive the turks out of Europe" which implied that any means to target both Turkish civilian and military target was legitimised.

After this agreement, Cyprus was annexed by the British and Greeks began to live in the region. However, for many years, the majority of people there were Turks. The Greeks living there wanted to unite with Greece and by forming an uprising they called ENOSIS, they murdered the Turks in the region in a planned way in order to dominate the entire Cyprus lands. For years, they have massacred the people they lived on the same land in peace, their neighbors, with internal turmoil and with the support of weapons they received from other countries such as England and Greece. Their aim is to have full control of the Cyprus lands and to want to unite with Greece. This non-war massacre is considered a regional genocide and is inhumane. The Malaya Girl represents the mindset of Chinese settlers to other countries 50 years ago.
Old Chinese settlers in PH, including my grand father, think they are smarter because they have businesses without considering that the Filipino culture does not surround around money and most Chinese that time were successful because they can trade with Chinese (because they can speak the language and there were cheap things from China even before then) and they did and still do not have problem employing other people and treating/paying them badly. Definitely, It is not a matter of intellect.
As part Filipino Chinese, I see this kind of attitude among elders Chinese migrant to Philippines, even until now. The 2nd or 3rd generations Chinese now who understands Filipino culture and adopt the ways, are not as hard @sses. I actually stopped doing business with old Chinese people because I can't accept the business mindset and tight culture that they have that put more emphasis on money rather than fair treatment of human beings. It just didn't feel right as 3rd generation Filipino-half Chinese who is more Filipino.
I think around that time of their debate, Philippines were more advance than most of our neighbors. We had a good amount of very educated people, and to be fair, I think compared to traditional Chinese, I think Filipinos at this time were more civilized than most of our neighbors.
It was ironic that she shaded the Filipina kid and then said they are civilized. During this debate, the Filipina kid was more civilized and respectful. She really represented the Filipino way.
Filipinos in the south are more related to indigenous Malaysians. So if she insulted Filipinos, she insulted the indigenous Malaysians, as well.
Now I understand why in Malaysia, they have to label "Malaysian Chinese" the Malaysian Chinese in their passports because the Malaysian Chinese themselves define themselves as superior that ofc the real owners of the land will not be happy about. I hope the new generations right now will change it.

Same goes for alcohol in some cultures. Burga in the other. When people in Iraq see white European they probably does not like this person in the first place. The same goes for Japanese who is going to China. But if more time and a tact and understanding from the position of the newcomer is given this hate/distrust mostly dissapears when in conntact with cultured people of every nation, color and creed. Even now in 2021, looking at the comments section i can see the hatred of some Greeks towards Turks. As a Turk, growing up, i was never taught to hate Greeks for the conflicts happened in the past (and happening all the time). But this young lady clearly hates the whole nation and this makes me really sad to see that the prejudice is horrible and racism and hatred are even more disgusting than that. As Mr. Onder said; we have bigger problems with bigger nations still due to super sensitive circumstances around our borders. As a Turk, even after i read about the horrible things done to Turkish women, children and men in Cyprus, or before the Cyprus conflict, I don’t hate Greek people nor have prejudice towards them. I am educated enough to know that mistakes or actions of people in the past can’t be related to actions/nations of today.

Hi sena, Greek here. I'm happy to hear that you were never taught to hate the Greeks or any nationality for that matter. Do not mind the greeks that only know how to insult someone for Turkey, they are not worth your time. They are no longer the rule but the exception, you may already have guessed that the older generation plays a role here. Victims of violence warn their kids about a specific group of people to the point the kids learns to hate them. Then that grows up to have kids of their own and the cicle continues . They tend to forget that times change and the people responsible are either dead or that they no longer represend their people. Sometimes it is not even the parents that are fault but the education system itself. At the start of her speech you can see how she boasts about the greek culture and nationality and what they achieved, that is a mindset that is planted in the minds of the youth. A bit of insider knowledge, even the military played their part in this, in the national liberation day (and Ochi day) students from ages 10+ learn how to do military marches, they go on a parade and salute the generals on their way. This sometimes becomes a hot topic as to a kid that celebrates their independece from the Ottoman empire in such a militaristic way can plant ideas in them. They are kids they should be worried more about if they ask their crush out, not saluting some man with a rank. Copying a page from the Turkish lad's book , Greeks today do not really care about Turkey. They are worried more about cracking down on corruption, if they can afford rent, if they can raise a family, Police abusing its power in some areas, companies "accidentally" burning entire forests to build more buildings and e.t.c. Every country has fanatics of any sort, either political or religious. Just don't let them be the voice of your people :)

We will never forget these crimes, both my grandfathers slaughtered by Turks. And of course the original Turkish people that came from the steppes of Mongolia naked riding a horse didn't have any civilization, later they discovered the world after conquering and enslaving other countries and cultures like Persians, Egyptians and Greeks and did intermarriage with them and create the today somehow better Turkey.

@@ses4068 That's the complete bullshit propaganda that Turkey feeds its kids at schools and imbeciles like u all around the world believe. Do you know anything about the situation in Cyprus, let me tell you from first hand. I had relatives in Cyprus that the Turkish army killed and kick out of their homes. After years they returned to see what happened to their homes and uncivilized Turkish families that brought by the government from the bowels of Turkey were living there inside my relatives own home. They weren't there from the beginning, in the land of Cyprus, they brought there, promised free houses by the gov of Turkey. And the characterization of uncivilized that I used to describe the familys wasn't because I'm mean, it's because of the fact that when my family returned to their home realized that the new people that live inside, had completely destroyed for ex. their beautiful classic furniture (tables, chairs, sofas, beautiful handmade pieces) and they preferred to sit on the floor in the middle of a dirty empty house. Of course all their precious heritage jewelry were gone too. That's the truth, that's what happened and the pain of kicking u out of your own home and land and country I wish noone will experience it again. But that's who Turks were and they never punished for that. I ask my grandmother about this stories and when she talking about them she can't stop crying, because she lost also siblings and family members that refused to leave their own home.
