    Lovely outline of Vedanta; an introduction to consciousness for those of us who are in the Western world and unfamiliar with the concepts. His mentioning that everyone believes this or that about consciousness or objective beliefs being an ignorant perspective underlines the ego centricity of our society today and why we all suffer so much. When more and more of us realize what our true consciousness is the world will be so different in a good way!

    Funny real story: actually two times in my life I got lucid while dreaming (something impossible happened and I trained myself to insist it is a dream). I started touching the walls and inspecting objects so closely in both dreams. I told myself that when I wake up, I want to remember that I have certified that there is no telling between a dream and reality in terms of how things look like! I will never forget these days. Unfortunately it stopped happening.

Kindly please advise where can one get the book that you referred to in the beginning of the talk that Ira has edited on BG based on his teacher's teachings?

      That is a brilliant reply, and thank you. Tho I always think that translating 'atman' to 'self' creates too many problems for English readers and speakers. Maybe 'soul' but qualifying the word? As for enlightenment being only for Jesus, well the the opposite is all these 'teachers' running around claiming that they are it!

    • @gameone6597
      @gameone6597 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Atma (or Atman - English transliteration) means 'self' only in Sanskrit/Hindi. The same word, Atma, is used for 'self' (referring to the ego-identity, the body-mind complex for which we normally use 'I'), as well as The Self (the ultimate reality that we are)! In common parlance, Atma is also used to refer to that which transmigrates from one life/birth to another. The new body/life is based on the Karma of previous lives. This 'Atma', is what is translated as soul.

    As an animal rights activist I see so many spiritual people who say eating meat is ok, but it causes immense animal suffering (not good dharma) Am I missing something in believing everyone should aspire to veganism?

    • @gameone6597
      @gameone6597 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mae rik You are right about Dharma. All the Hindu spiritual teachers in India strongly advise against eating meat. If someone wants to learn from theses teachers about Vedas/Vedanta/spirituality, those students are mandatorily required to give-up eating meat (besides adopting other dharmic practises)! Milk is allowed, is considered sacred (so are cows)!
      Vegetarianism is required for two reasons 1) Dharma - (non-violence/non-injury to the extent humanely possible is a key principle), 2) Cultivating Sattvic guna (energies), and reducing Rajasic/Tamasic ones. Sattvic Guna facilitates spiritual learning and behaviour.
      I think in the West many teachers still do not push vegetarianism because they do want a gradual weaning. As it is these Hindu/Vedanta concepts are new and revolutionary to the existing beliefs that they are hard to digest, if one pushes a change in daily food & lifestyle also, it will be difficult for people. Having said that, once people start practicing these spiritual teachings (Vedanta/Yoga/Chanting etc) they gradually start giving up non-sattvic things - food, habits, mindset etc. I've seen people who go through this transformation.

      Advaita is not about beliefs , rights and wrongs , true and false . It is about knowing the self. Practices may include eating veg as a part of non-violence ... through the Astanga Yoga ... But you see the reality is something different.
      Advaita or Non - Dual means "not two" ... its kind of the ultimate realization of the universal consciousness , the seer within is the seer in all .. the seer is the subject and the object ... it can not be expressed in words. For an Advaita , eating veg or non veg is same , and both like eating own flesh , but what he/she can do! Life feeds on life... and this is a reality. IF you ask an advaita about this , that you are an animal rights activist , he might just laugh , thinking why vegetables are less ! basically he does not see any difference in any thing , as all are obviously his own self including you , so they tend to be silent and try to live on minimal diet , where ever , whatever is available .... Now , in this big universe , a tiny sun , being rotated by an almost invisible earth , in that trillions of life forms , among them you are one , and if you think your opinion is bigger and it could change the whole planet and the system , I bow down to your wish and will obey your opinion till you understand , that if tomorrow the whole solar system simply vanishes from the universe , no one will notice .
      Advaita is something many aspire to get it , but you see , practices do not lead to Advaita ... People practices many things for that aspiration , but the reality is .... either you get it , or you do not get it - IF .. you get it , you can never be so called a "normal person" because the mind is dead .... if you do not get it ... well .. you are lucky , enjoy this dream land.
      Bows :)

      @@kumarjitghoshal2516 You do not understand any of it... There is a journey to achieve realization. Astanga principles will tell you how to prepare for the journey and undertake the journey. Nonviolence is one of the aspects of it. One thing you say is right... either you get or you do not... but you are less likely to get it if you life is not "good/Dharmic" like Jesus said, "it is easier for a camel to pass thru the eye of a needle than a rich man getting into the world of god"... "It is infinitely easier for a "good/Dharmic" person to attain realization" There are lots of people who have attained realization and their minds were not dead, but their lives were "full/complete" for ever. Read Kathopanishad and you will understand it.

      The same Atmais present in me as well as in the person who is criticising. So, why should I be annoyed when he is criticising himself?” A deep inquiry into the truth will reveal that when you love or hate others, you love or hate your own self. In fact, there are no “others.” You consider yourself different from others because of body attachment. Once you give up body attachment, you will realise that there are no others and all are yours. That is the true vision of the Atma. The Atma does not have a specific form.

    To talk about non-duality is a contradiction in terms, as non-duality means not dual, not subject-object. To talk is to objectify, hence to talk about non-duality is not real. Non duality is therefore not a matter of the mind; it is no thought; it is living. Non duality is experience, and one can find it in meditation, running, eating, everydayness....
