Advaita: Non-Dual Spirituality - from Ancient India to our Global Age

  • This documentary traces the evolution of Advaita - from the ancient rishis to saints like Shankara and modern teachers like Ramana Maharshi and Swami Vivekananda - and examines whether or not modern teachings have maintained the power and clarity of the ancient traditions from which they evolved.
The rishis, the sages of ancient India, discovered the underlying reality - brahman - because of which everything exists. The taught this in the Vedic scriptures (shastra), particularly in the Upanishads, which were expanded upon by later generations of teachers, gurus, acharyas, sadhus, and saints. In more recent times, a lack of understanding of the Sanskrit language of the scriptures opened the door to various re-interpretations of those scripture and two modern schools of thought neo-Vedanta and neo-advaita.

my Guru used to say: when one of the disciples of Adi Shankara Acharya asked Shankara "based on your teachings, your teaching is also not reality". Shankara replied "Yes, my teaching are also not reality but they are like a tiger in a dream. Even though the tiger in the dream is not real. It will wake you up from the dream"

Devoting to Jesus/Allah/Any other God is way of Ego Dissolving.. In Gita Krishna refers the same to Arjuna. In your every thought every action think you are doing it for me. This is one of the way to dissolve the I and see the inner self Atman. This method is called Karma Yoga. Advaita Vedanta might come under Jnana Yoga, to dissolve the Ego through knowledge.

As a physicist I find these teachings remarkable. Not only are they very concise and clear but they are totally supported by our current model of the way reality works. Swami is right of course when he says that quarks may be to found to be made of something else. Although they are regarded as fundamental ie they do not consist of any other particles, all particles are thought to be formed by waves in a 'sea of fields' which extend throughout the Universe. As to what this collection of fields is made from . . . . well, maybe that is Brahma? But isn't it amazing - now we no longer believe that there is any such thing as a 'solid' particle underlying all things, instead we have an infinite ocean of waves - just like the rishis suggested 5, 000 years ago. Incredible!

Neil, I love that you are saying that. The energetic and vibrational nature of the universe can be experienced by us all in the "right" frame of mind, or in dreams. Yes, spiritual knowledge is profound and true and many sciences have EMERGED FROM IT! Science still can't explain consciousness and there is a reason for that. 🤣😂🤣

This Infinite Ocean of Waves Is The One Infinite Pure Consciousness , The One Infinite Pure Intelligence and The One Pure Infinite Awareness That Which Everything Is Emerging From It .
" Reality Is merely an illusion , albeit a very persistent one ." ~ Albert Einstein
" Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real ."
" When it comes to atoms , language can be used only as in poetry . The poet , too , is not nearly so concerned with describing facts as with creating images ." ~ Niels Bohr
" Science cannot solve the ultimate mystery of nature . And that is because , in the last analysis , we ourselves are a part of the mystery that we are trying to solve ."
" All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force .... We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent Mind . This Mind is the matrix of all matter ." ~ Max Planck
" Consciousness is a singular of which the plural is unknown . There is only one thing and that which seems to be a plurality is merely a series of different aspects of this one thing , produced by a deception , the Indian maya , as in a gallery of mirrors ."
" Quantum physics thus reveals a basic oneness of the universe ."
" What we observe as material bodies and forces are nothing but shapes and variations in the structure of space ."
" The total number of minds in the universe is One ."
" Consciousness is a singular for which there is no plural ."
" Consciousness cannot be accounted for in physical terms . For consciousness is absolutely fundamental . It cannot be accounted for in terms of anything else ." ~ Erwin Schrodinger
" What we observe is not nature itself , but nature exposed to our method of questioning ."
" The very act of observing disturbs the system ."
" After the conversations about Indian philosophy , some of the ideas of Quantum physics that had seemed so crazy suddenly made much more sense ."
" By getting to smaller and smaller units , we do not come to fundamental or indivisible units . But we do come to a point where further division has no meaning ."
" The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will turn you into an atheist , but at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you ." ~ Werner Heisenberg

When I started learning about Indian thought and especially reading the upanishads, I quickly realized that Indian philosophy was about 2k-3k years ahead of western philosophy. Eastern philosophy was asking questions and talking about things before the common era that western philosophy was completely missing until the enlightenment.
Any modern student of philosophy will be familiar with Plato, Aristotle, Kant, etc. but they should just as well be studying the vedas, upanishads, and teachings of Buddha, and the Tao

Many gurus from Shankaracharya to Ramanna Maharshi realised the truth, and upholded it. How can one forget their Self ? Few days they may live in ignorance, but one day they come to realise the truth.

I'm hugely influenced by Ramana Maharshi. He made Vedanta easier like kinder-garden math. Still he didn't tell anything new. Vichara or inquiry method was from Vedic ages. He also said Truth can never change so how he can tell anything new. He resurrected vichara and no doubt even logically, his method is direct fast track method. Ramana never rejected old methods, but always held them high when someone asked about naam-japa or gayatri recitation. Mr Punja or Babaji, I read about him too but Hindus did not accept him as they accepted Ramana. Some teachings of Babaji are difficult for me to accept. But huge respect for Ramana, Swami Vivekananda, Ramkrishna and also Robert Adams.

i was 19, when i experienced the brahman, the real self, however one may verbalize it, i was blessed by this experience within few days of practicing meditation and self enquiry, on the forth day i had the experience and then i Didn't knew what i had experienced later began the intellectual quest which almost led me ashtray. brahman is an experience that lies beyond the mind and its cognitive perceptions, the rest is mere systematic conceptualization of that absolute reality.

Seems you are learning about the pillars in the global age! You had an Experience but that alone isnt enough, Since that is how blind faith or religious Dogma often rises. So you began the search for Knowledge, to help you verbalize it better, but that too isnt enough as you felt being almost led "astray"
So you began practicing Raja Yoga to regain that knowledge you once experienced through meditation that which you already know is real (Brahman) From your own individual experiences. Maybe you feel self actualise, maybe you don't. But not only a primary practice can we get there, we often need a secondary, tertiary, quaternary, quinary, senary, septenary, octonary, nonary, and denary. (wtf do you mean?) I mean one path alone, such as just meditation (raja yoga) isnt enough. but if you choose 10 paths, you might just burst into flames.
just as the rice/fire/water metataphore, The only way is through is practice of many paths, even if you feel they might lead you astray, that too is your path. maybe Bhaki yoga, or Karma yoga, maybe Yoqi, or Qigong yoga, Kundalini yoga or whatever path is most suitable for you, maybe all of them! i donno! Only when you master your yoga practice can you bring your Experience into the world so that others might experience it as well.
Its like trying to prove that which cannot be proven, as we all have experiences we know are real, but we cannot prove it to others who haven't experience it also.
In the end its just a story until you gain the power of manifestation.
Christianity has influenced me A LOT, and they will often describe this "experience" as:: "your personal experience with God, its personal, between you and him alone" but i Find this undermines an individuals personal power. Something people are searching far and wide for, in the global age, when one finds it, they can call themselves a "yogi" or a "swami" or whatever they manifest in the world to be.

      1. Adi Shankara (8th cent. CE), also called Adi Shankaracharya (Sanskrit: आदि शङ्कर, आदि शङ्कराचार्य, romanized: Ādi Śaṅkarācāryaḥ, lit. 'First Shankara', [aːdɪ ɕɐŋkɐraːtɕaːrjɐh]),[note 2] was an Indian Vedic scholar and teacher (acharya),[4] whose works present a harmonizing reading of the sastras, with liberating knowledge of the self at its core, synthesizing the Advaita Vedanta teachings of his time] The title of Shankracharya, used by heads of the amnaya monasteries is derived from his name.
      2. Ramanuja (Middle Tamil: Rāmāṉujam; Classical Sanskrit: Rāmanuja; c. 1077 CE - 1157 CE; IAST: Rāmānuja; [ɽaːmaːnʊdʑɐ]), also known as Ramanujacharya, was an Indian Hindu philosopher, guru and a social reformer. He is noted to be one of the most important exponents of the Sri Vaishnavism tradition within Hinduism. His philosophical foundations for devotionalism were influential to the Bhakti movement.
      3. Basaveshwara, colloquially known as Basavanna, was a 12th-century CE Indian statesman, philosopher, poet, Lingayat social reformer in the Shiva-focussed bhakti movement, and a Hindu Shaivite[4] social reformer during the reign of the Kalyani Chalukya/Kalachuri dynasty. Basava was active during the rule of both dynasties but reached the peak of his influence during the rule of King Bijjala II in Karnataka, India.
      4. Madhvacharya (IAST: Madhvācārya; Sanskrit pronunciation: [mɐdʱʋaːˈtɕaːɽjɐ]; CE 1199-1278[5] or CE 1238-1317[6]), sometimes anglicised as Madhva Acharya, and also known as Purna Prajna (IAST: Pūrṇa-Prajña) and Ānanda Tīrtha, was an Indian philosopher, theologian and the chief proponent of the Dvaita (dualism) school of Vedanta.[1][7] Madhva called his philosophy Tattvavāda meaning "arguments from a realist viewpoint".
      5. Vidyaranya was born between 1280 and 1285, usually identified with Mādhavācharya (Not to be confused with Madhvāchārya (13th c.)), was Jagadguru of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham from ca. 1374-1380 until 1386 - according to tradition,
after ordination at an old age, he took the name of Vidyaranya, and became the Jagadguru of this Matha at Sringeri.
Madhavacharya is known as the author of the Sarvadarśanasaṅgraha, a compendium of different philosophical schools of Hindu philosophy and Pañcadaśī, an important text for Advaita Vedanta.
According to tradition, Vidyaranya helped establish the Vijayanagara Empire sometime in 1336, and served as a mentor and guide to 3 generations of kings who ruled over it.
The historical accuracy of this account is doubtful, and may have originated as late as 200 years after the events, as a "political foundation myth,
an ideological attempt to represent the authority of the Vijayanagara state as deriving directly from that of the Sultanate."[5]
Vidyashankara temple in Sringeri is the samadhi of Vidya shankara, the guru of Vidyaranya which was built over the former's grave by his disciple Harihara.
      6. Namdev (Pronunciation: [naːmdeʋ]), also transliterated as Nam Dayv, Namdeo, Namadeva, (traditionally, c. 26 October 1270 - c. 3 July 1350) was a Marathi Hindu poet and saint from Narsi, Hingoli, Maharashtra, India within the Varkari tradition of Hinduism. He lived as a devotee of Lord Vitthal (Krishna) of Pandharpur.
      7. Gurū Nānak, Gurmukhi: ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ; pronunciation: [gʊɾuː naːnəkᵊ], pronunciation), also referred to as Bābā Nānak ('father Nānak'),[1] was the founder of Sikhism and is the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. His birth is celebrated worldwide as Guru Nanak Gurpurab on Katak Pooranmashi ('full-moon of Kattak'), i.e. October-November.
Nanak is said to have travelled far and wide across Asia teaching people the message of ik onkar (ੴ, 'one God'), who dwells in every one of his creations and constitutes the eternal Truth.[2] With this concept, he would set up a unique spiritual, social, and political platform based on equality, fraternal love, goodness, and virtue.
      8. Vallabhacharya Mahaprabhu(1479-1531 CE), also known as Vallabha, Mahaprabhuji and Vishnuswami, or Vallabha Acharya, is a Hindu Indian saint and philosopher who founded the Krishna-centered PushtiMarg sect of Vaishnavism in the Braj(Vraj) region of India,[1] and the Vedanta philosophy of Shuddha advaita (Pure Non-dualism).[2][3][4][5]
He is the Jagadguru Acharya and Guru of the Pushti Marg bhakti tradition and Suddhadwait Brahmavad (Vedant Philosophy), which he founded after his own interpretation of the Vedanta philosophy.[1][6][7]
Vallabhacharya was born in a Telugu Tailang Brahmin family that had been currently residing in Varanasi, who escaped to Champaran of Chhattisgarh state while expecting shri Vallabha, expecting a Muslim invasion in Varanasi, during the late 15th century.[8] The name Vallabha means the beloved or lover, and is a name of Vishnu and Krishna.
Vallabhacharya studied the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, Shat Darshan as a child, then travelled throughout the Indian subcontinent over 20 years.[8] He became one of the important leaders of the devotional Bhakti movement. Vallabhacharya's mother was Illamma who was the daughter of a family priest serving the rulers of the empire of Vijayanagara.[9] The biographies written by his followers, just like those for other Bhakti leaders, claim that he won many philosophical scholarly debates against the followers of Adi Shankracharya, Ramanuja, Madhvacharya and others, had visions and miracles.
      9. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (18 February 1486 - 14 June 1534)
(IAST: Caitanya Mahāprabhu; born Vishvambhar Mishra) was a 15th-century Indian saint who is considered to be the combined avatar of Radha and Krishna by his disciples and various scriptures.
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's mode of worshipping Krishna with ecstatic song and dance had a profound effect on Vaishnavism in Bengal.
He was also the chief proponent of the Vedantic philosophy of Achintya Bheda Abheda Tattva.
Mahaprabhu founded Gaudiya Vaishnavism (a.k.a. the Brahma-Madhva-Gaudiya Sampradaya).
He expounded Bhakti yoga and popularized the chanting of the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra.
He composed the Shikshashtakam (eight devotional prayers).
Chaitanya is sometimes called Gauranga or Gaura due to his molten gold-like complexion.
His birthday is celebrated as Gaura-purnima.
He is also called Nimai due to him being born underneath a Neem tree
      10. Tulsidas (Hindi pronunciation: [tʊlsiːdaːs]; born Rambola Dubey; also known as Goswami Tulsidas;[3] c.1511[4]-1623) was a Ramanandi Vaishnava Hindu saint and poet, renowned for his devotion to the deity Rama. He wrote several popular works in Sanskrit and Awadhi, but is best known as the author of the Hanuman Chalisa and of the epic Ramcharitmanas, a retelling of the Sanskrit Ramayana based on Rama's life in the vernacular Awadhi.
Tulsidas spent most of his life in the city of Varanasi and Ayodhya.[5] The Tulsi Ghat on the Ganges River in Varanasi is named after him.[3] He founded the Sankatmochan Temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman in Varanasi, believed to stand at the place where he had the sight of the deity.[6] Tulsidas started the Ramlila plays, a folk-theatre adaptation of the Ramayana.
      11. Raghavendra Tirtha (Śrī Rāghavēndra Tīrtha) (c.1595 - c.1671) was a Hindu scholar, theologian and saint. He was also known as Sudha Parimalacharya (Sudhā Parimaḷācārya). His diverse oeuvre include commentaries on the works of Madhva, Jayatirtha and Vyasatirtha, interpretation of the Principal Upanishads from the standpoint of Dvaita and a treatise on Purva Mimamsa. He served as the pontiff of matha at Kumbakonam from 1621 to 1671.[1] Sri Raghavendra Swamy was also an accomplished player of the Veena and he composed several songs under the name of Venu Gopala.[2] His shrine at Mantralayam attracts lakhs (hundreds of thousands) of visitors every year.

Swami, sincere thanks for your efforts and, needless to say, to Swami Dayananda Saraswati. This video is arguably the most summative and coherent video on Advaita that's available to seekers such as myself who do not yet have the liberty to break free of our routines and attend residential programs. Hari Om!

Accidentally came across this; took two days to fully watch it and comprehend every single thing mentioned in the video. Thank you Swamiji for such a wonderful video. This is of immense help to people like me.
