Mario has been a video game staple for many years, and 30 years later, we can now make our own Super Mario Bros. courses with Super Mario Maker on Wii U. How cool is that?! But before the game's release, the art style went through quite a bit of change, and now you'll be able to see these changes in full.

If I recall I think Nintendo said the New Super Mario Bros. aesthetic was only graphical when they first showed the game, meaning it played exactly like Super Mario Bros with updated graphics.

The sounds from the SMB2 Mario costume was probably added to the SMB2 mushroom in super Mario maker 2
They all got added and all had the purpose as said with the text except for the up press which made it in as the pickup sound.

One change you didn't mention was that in the E3 trailer, it was shown that you would have been able to place pipes partially offscreen (as seen at 4:13) This is impossible in the final game because the entire pipe has to be onscreen, meaning you can only have a 2-block high pipe at minimum.

Unofficial hacks of Mario games featuring new levels go all the way back to the late 90s, well before 2007 and auto mario levels.

Custom courses have been around waay longer than 2007 automatic mario. It's goes back to at least 2000.
I was kind of surprised to not hear "Lunar Magic" or "Kaizo" anywhere in this video. I think the ROMhack community that existed for years made it very clear that there was widespread interest in a creative mario game.

it goes back to around 1996 to 1997 for super mario world hacks atleast, but mario 3 hacking goes back to 1993 to 1994.

All of these changes are interesting. However, I personally think it was a good call to change the victory screen. I could see that getting really annoying after you play a lot of levels. And also, the fact that you get no points is also a bummer

Mr. Saturn uses the same sounds as Ness in the game. I sitll hate that it was taken out, as someone who has played all 3 Mother games and completed Earthbound and Mother 3; I can easily say that Mr. Saturn is the BEST THING EVER!

I never knew this after multiple plathroughs of Mother 3, but I learned this after reading the Fangamer guide. After you are sent back from the birdies, if you go back to Saturn Valley, the entrance is unblocked. BUT the important thing is, on the highway, the Pork Bean is painted to look like a Mr. Saturn. It's hilarious.

-7:12:When Mario grabs a mushroom in E3 2014, he has the idle animation, but not in the final game.
-12:22: The UI of coin, score and TIME counter is the same for every retro game style, and NSMBU Lava Splash animation, different Firebars and Bullet Bill Launcher sprites, mostly based off the original games' sprites.
-13:57: There's no grass in the Background like in the final game.
P.S.: In SMB, the black outline in the Background and pipes haven't changed into dark green like in the final game.
17:38 The possible reason the Teardrop Sprite is by a Big Steely is because when fighting Bowser in Super Mario World, whenever you hit Bowser with a Mecha-Koopa, a tear will drop from his eye. Maybe Nintendo was trying to recreate that feeling since depending on the theme, Bowser can execute other moves not able to do so in other titles.

I think the split in the ground at around 11:00 is caused because the Ground is placed like the semi solid platforms, instead of blocks. That can explain why 4 blocks are shown in the icon.

Just wanted to point out that modded Mario games have been around for much longer than 2007, despite what was said at around 1:31. The first version of Super Demo World, a SMW hack created to show off the capabilities of Lunar Magic's ability to modify Super Mario World, was released on September 10th 2001. Even before SMW hacking became a major thing, there were still a good amount of level-oriented hacks for the NES Mario trilogy(mainly SMB1) going around since the late 90's/early 2000's.

In Super Mario World when you hit Bowser the Clown Copter briefly cries. That's most likely what the tear was for.

You've really come a long way in the youtube industry! I've been following since early on.
The Big Steelie was used in SMW Bowser's battle. At 17:37~ was likely use of the teardrop was when Bowser (or the enemy in a clown car) takes damage. It looks very similar to the teardrop used in Super Mario World when Bowser takes damage; the teardrop would be a sprite tile that comes from the clown car's eye.
That'd be the reason why they appear next to one another.

The tear was a tear from the clown car when you defeat Bowser in Mario World.
16:50 You should've corrected that. That's not the correct enemy. You need to get a cannon, not a Bill Blaster. When using that, the sprite is MUCH similar. I believe the red variant is Toad though.
When I watched this as a kid, I was quick to notice the Mario Maker gameplay from SwimmingBird, since I was (and still am) a fan of his videos ^^ You got good taste in other TH-camrs

I know how it has been said before, but I would have loved to see the Mario Maker beta design as the designing screen for MM2
If I can ever have a device that lets me play this, I would want Mario from SMB. 2! The sound effects are good in that one. And Mario looks good in that game.
Also Tetris sounds and characters...despite the lack of characters.

Things to note.
For the pipes, in the first two demos, they could be placed with just the top segment on screen, while relase only lets the top and one tile of the main segment stay on screen.
In the 2nd demo, mario's sprite isn't any smaller or bigger than the original, due to how blurry the release screenshot appears, and the ground in the 2nd demo having 1 more pixel of highlight than the release. Both have his feet 1 pixel into the ground.
Also, mario's shadow is a lot darker in the 2nd demo, even with the brighter background.

If you did not know I tried to recreate these levels but the I discovered the game physics change drastically
The original Wii U demo version from E3 2014 had 3 sample courses built-in. Here's a fact: the Course "Sample Level 1" is also seen in the original E3 2014 trailer for Mario Maker (Super Mario Maker) This game was first released in Japan on September 10th, 2015, then in the United States and Europe on September 11th, 2015, and Australia on September 12th, 2015 (made to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original super mario bros. game released in 1985). This game won 6 out of 12 awards (including 2 Gamescon awards, 1 Games award, 2 NAVGTR awards, and 1 D. I. C. E. award) which lead to the nintendo 3ds version of this game released in Japan on December 1st, 2016, then in the United States and Europe on December 2nd, 2016, and Australia on December 3rd, 2016, and finally the sequel: super mario maker 2 on the nintendo switch on June 28th, 2019 with 3 updates later on, starting with the first update being released on October 2nd, 2019, the second update being released on December 5th, 2019 and the third/final update being released on April 22nd, 2020 (during the covid pemdemic).
