Trek Central's Lieutenant Commander Adam dives into the U.S.S Intrepid, as seen in Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Episode 5! As part of the mighty effort to diversify the Starfleet fleet going into the 25th century, we have now been treated to the brand new USS Intrepid NCC-79520, a Duderstadt class vessel.
I feel we will have a similar situation to the Prometheus here. Was it registered before being built or older than the USS Titan NCC-80102? Let's find out, shall we?

I am not sponsored by or in any communication with Nord VPN. BUT - They rock. I am a retired global IT Manager, and that is the VPN I use on all my home systems. Seriously, if you're even considering adding a VPN - Go Nord. There are down sides - when they update the whole thing seems to crash, and sometimes takes your system down with it. But its sorted with a re-boot, and usually it goes away within a day or two. Lots of uses, some not so obvious.. Well recommended. Just be aware that about every 4 months or so you're going to need to uninstall, reinstall and reset all the settings. But it works as advertised.

The Intrepid is a great name for a ship name.Always thought that the name Intrepid is just as good as the Enterprise name. Plus this ship is pretty cool looking and looks like a scrapper in a fight and Great explorer also. she may have or should have some phasers banks like the old starfleet ships or phaser pluse cannon's along with the other phasers they have. I know she is more of a science based ship. But since the battle of wolf 359 and the dominion war and many other things.she may have or should have been armed a little more i think.

I always enjoy it when Star Trek uses the names of actual famous warships & sailing ships, especially the WWII carriers. Maybe if Legacy happens we’ll see the Intrepid back, and since the Enterprise-G isn’t the biggest or strongest maybe they could call the new Federation Flagship the Yorktown, Lexington, Saratoga, Essex, Ticonderoga, Hood, Excalibur, etc…something else that has historic gravitas. As far as this Intrepid’s class I could see using names like Hornet, Wasp and Ranger for a few of its sister ships.

As a note, the suffix ( bloody A BC etc) is typically applied to ships that recieve both the name and registry number of a previous ship, the Enterprise A got an A because otherwise keeping its records straight would be problematic.
We see other ships carry established names but typically without the historical numbers. This allows for easy distinction between the ships.
It also seems like some ships get legacy numbers even without the associated name, the Constellations registry number is 1017, making it incongruous with the 17xx scheme that seems to define the class. Apparently 17 is meant to be the 17th cruiser design and the following digits roughly represent the production order. So it seems likely that the Constellations number is in honor of an older ship, plausibly of a Crossfield class ship that predates the Discovery and Glenn (1031 and 1030 respectively) though as the fleet grows larger over time the whole numbering convention breaks down, even more than it was already lol.

It should be noted that this pattern (reused name, different number) seen on the Intrepid (also Defiant, Hood, Excalibur, etc.) is the way it tends to work in the real world. For example, the real USS Enterprise (CVN-65), which was decommissioned in 2017, is scheduled to be replaced by a new USS Enterprise (CVN-80). She herself was named for the previous USS Enterprise (CV-6).

Kind of bugged me how the Intrepid listed downwards after Ro's shuttle hit the nacelle. I understand why they did it, in order to simulate the ship "sinking", but from a physics perspective, it just seems backward. It probably should have listed up and to the right.

You've got to think that a lot of the TNG & Borg buster era ships might not so much have been cast aside when that new ship smell faded, but rather they, like Voyager herself, had gotten so chewed up and repaired in that hasty manner that only wartime demands. ( à la the USS Yorktown CV-5 ) With such being the case, it was seen, on a ship-by-ship basis, that a good many were just too warn out to be viable anymore. It was most likely that a good variety of these ships were going through the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards to discern their viability when the Romulan Super Nova crisis became the Breaking News story on FNN. With the need so dire for ships Starfleet was raiding all its boneyards whilst at the same time building specialty designs to move as many people as it could handle. If a ship couldn't fit the need to repeatedly lug as many refugees as it was designed to evacuate without requiring an overhaul or refit, then it was likely scrapped to either feed the industrial replicators or provide parts for ships in a better state of condition. It was likely that during the Attack on Mars by the Zhat Vash, everything that couldn't escape was destroyed outright. So, given this rollercoaster ride of happenings, it's none too likely that we'll see too many of those grand ole TNG+ era ships in any great abundance going forward...but when we do, smile and savor.

Sure the Odyssey Class is much larger than the Neo-Conny, but seeing *_The Enterprise_* of all ships compromised by the Changelings would've been a massive gutpunch and also made the stakes even more apparent.

I think the name Intrepid keeps being reused for several reasons. First, it's a good name for an exploratory vessel; I'd expect nothing less for the Intrepid-class USS Voyager to venture to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Such a mission certainly wouldn't fit for the USS Sitsathomeport. Second, Star Trek from its inception has loved WWII ship names - the American carriers in particular. All three of the Yorktown-class carriers have lent their names to Starfleet vessels (Yorktown, Enterprise, and Hornet) as have the Lexington-class (Lexington and Saratoga) and the Essex-class Intrepid, Princeton, Shangri-La, Valley Forge, Kearsarge, and Franklin (I'm sure I've missed a few). Additionally, the carrier Intrepid has been preserved as a popular museum ship in New York City, lending a readily visited (for American audiences anyway) real world connection. It is somewhat weird from an in-universe perspective that the various Intrepids don't share registry numbers like the numerous Enterprises and Voyagers. It's of course explained from a meta viewpoint: none of the Intrepids has been a "hero" ship.

I hate to disagree with the wiki, or memory alpha. But it is painfully obvious that the 24th century Intrepid class was not a long range exploration vessel. Its crew too small, the quaters weren't built for extended cruises away from port, evident by how Kim's neighbor would bang on the bulkheads when he practiced his clarinet because the bulkheads werent built to dampen sound that effectively because the ship wasnt designed to be lived on indefinitely.
Its clear that while the Intrepid made do and did serve well in scientific roles when needed. It was never a science first vessel. Star Fleet had a rule that all ships needed science labs because you never know when your going to be the only ship in the sector to get detailed scans of a temporary anomaly or alien vessel or whatever.
But the Intrepid was incredibly well armed for a ship so small, very heavily automated, being that it was about 1/5 the size of a galaxy but used 1/10th the crew. It had an unusually large compliment of shuttles for a ship its size, and its warp core was excessively large for a ship its size, easily giving the ship more power than it would ever need. It had no kitchen from the launch, with Voyagers being built by Neelix to conserve on replicator energy. It only carried at maximum 3 years of deuterium. A supply that could be wasted much faster if the crew wasnt careful. And the lack of backup systems. They had no hydroponics before the delta quadrant, only a single doctor and 1 nurse for a crew of 141 and not a single crewman with medical training as backup save only for an EMH who proved more than worth his emitter's wait in latinum.
Its obvious. The Intrepid was built as a multipure tactical ship that could be mass produced and be fast. Its necelles are purpose built to deal with the warp 5 speed limit starfleet put in after TNG discovered conventional warp travel of the time damaged subspace. The ships ability to land on a planet and either dislodge large amounts of cargo or personnel directly or even remove and repair entire coils in the field means it was modular and meant for rapid service and deployment. This was Starfleets best attempt at a general purpose ship for the 24th century, an answer to the Klingon bird of prey, a ship that is well armed for almost any tactical scenario. has limited science labs that can serve most needs, and can easily transport resources and personnel quickly across the federation. But its lack of back ups, lack of comforts, and lack of long term storage shows it would never have been intended for deep space.
Also, no astrometrics. No star fleet ship can claim to be an exploration ship if it doesnt have even an astrometrics lab.

There's nothing unusual about a time honored ship name being reused for a new ship after the previous ship has been destroyed or decommissioned. Real navies do it all the time as a way to honor the legacy of the name. The British Royal Navy has had 15 ships named Enterprise since the 1700s, and the US Navy has had 8, including three aircraft carriers, the latest being the Gerald R. Ford class Enterprise currently under construction right now.

"Decommissioned every 5 years." Starfleet had a few generations of complacency, then a couple of generations of intense hostile activity. Bound to have ships running out of lifespan very quickly at that point. (Not Worf's fault.)
You watch: Ent-J is the result of 100 years of 'the galaxy is at peace, we can relax'.

One more Intrepid for the road: The real life USS Intrepid is now part of the Intrepid Museum in New York, which also hosts the Space Shuttle Enterprise. Maybe this connection has contributed to the recurrence of the name in Star Trek, or maybe it just really sounds like it should be the name of a starship.

So, we only ever see two, or hear of more than four intrepid class starships, so it's possible there just weren't that many of them commissioned, in which case, the fact we don't see any in STP is merely the fact that they were used to the point of breaking. We know voyager was decomm'd pretty quickly after her return, given what she went through, and that was decades before STP, so it's safe to assume they're successors have completely replaced them now. Plus, whilst we see hundreds of ships at earth, we don't see thousands, and an organisation the size of the UFP and its Starfleet would require many times more ships to function, so I'm guessing what we really saw was the primary battlefleet(s), whilst the support fleet(s) of less battle-ready status were trying to fill the gaps for the expected duration of festivities.
I really like this new "Dude" class and can't wait for them to hit STO, she's a real pretty dude for an angry starship. Of course, they'll have to mod the design a little for turrets and omni's (seriously, why do no ships have centreline weapons anymore in Trek?), but I have faith the team will be conscientious in doing so: they're pretty good at ships these days.
I went had a look at Larry Miller's designs and had a right giggle when I read she's supposed to be an FDC, like, she has less IV than a Connie; where are you putting the fighters? (the Hornet is tiny compared to the Dude)

"The Angry Starship" I will, probably, be the first to say this much for the USS Intrepid, but I found it about as angry as a sleeping kitten. Seriously. The only thing that made it seem angry was the background music they choose to play as the ship recovered and powered back up. Had the USS Titan chose to power up and fired first? They'd have been playing a funeral dirge instead. We could have had a more intimidating vessel, like an Excelsior 2 class or even a Sagan, show up, but what we got was something that looked Starfleet was trying to reinvent a Hoover Vacuum Cleaner instead.

I'm setting myself up for being shot down in flames here, so apologies in advance.... I thought the whole point of the Intrepid Class - Voyager - ship was that it was only designed and built for short range, 3 week missions? Basically an internal courier to the fleet? That is why its amalgamation with the Marquis and epic trip home was so amazing - the ship was only supposed to work "inside" the Federation, or at most on very short external missions. If I got my choice of ship it would be an Excelsior MkII... but if I was a kid pulling donuts in the parking lot.... An Intrepid Class.

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix ปีที่แล้ว +2

That's not right, the ship was designed to be very fast, tactically powerful and it had long legs. It's not the class you would send on deep space long term missions necessarily, but there's plenty of work to be done along frontier space and relatively known non federation space.
People often suggest the Galaxy class would have been a better equipped ship, but I think it would become a crushing maintenance nightmare well before a smaller ship. If it flew uncontested sure, it'll be a comfy ride, but it's a big target and takes a lot of resources to keep running. It's much slower and can't push itself as hard for as long.

The same reason they always have, you would hate an "accurate " space fight, theres a reason nobody makes accurate modern airforce films, a hyper advanced jet flying dead straight and taking out enemy planes from over the horizon isn't very compelling.
