    hello you have helped me a lot with your tutorials and this has not been the exception I already did that of doing the change of the spike but as a reconnect if now it is longer that I have to move or remove to couple the shaft again I was half late doing it and I could not see if you help us as always.

    Nathan: Thank you so much for the BMW'S videos. you have save me thousands of dollars by doing the repairs my self.
    Please when you come up with a video: Replacing the radiator on a 328i 2000, please remember me.
    God blessed you for helping others.
    Again thank you so much.
    Tonio.

    Wow, this just happened to me, thank you for the fix. Can you make a video showing the drive shaft with the piece welded on please.

    Would a thicker guibo help temporarily with this problem?

    the average person will require removal of the t-case or the front diff. I managed getting it in but used a bit of unwise grinding and hammering. I do not suggest using that technique though. you 100% cannot install the longer unit back in correctly without doing that. ideally the driveshaft needs to be mounted in a metal lathe or it will NOT be straight. it will wobble and shimmy the car. that will cause diff and/or t-case seals to leak over time.
    a good idea is to do like Subaru does and drill a perpendicular hole through the t-case and the new shaft splines. then tap in a roll pin to lock it. that will end the issue forever.

      +ykmalachi Its because of you that i checked this before we put this x5 back together, and realized it was about to break.

      care to elaborate? i am about to do this repair myself this week. i did get my shaft off without removing the t-case or trans. i did not use a grinder or hammer, just got it to slide back into the t-case a little farther for clearance. ALLDATA stated that was all was needed. anyway could you clarify what you checked and did you install the roll pin on yours?

    I have a X5, 4.4i 2004, would this apply to me as well?

    Adding 1" of fresh spline doesn't seem like a lot, and there's like 2" more clean spline after the stripped part. Why not set the length even longer, say 30 1/2" or 31"? I've already got my t-fer case out so reinstallation is no problem. @nathan's BMW Workshop

    I am coming into this late with the recent acquisition of a low mileage X5. I am under the car replacing CV boots and noted some cracking of the Giubo. Intending to replace the flex joints I happened upon these videos and a lot of info about the repair. While I understand the rationale for the mega-spline it introduces the problem ykmalachi indicated: installation. It is clear that the failure mode is a problem with the driveshaft length. When disassembling my vehicle there was some wear on the splines but I caught it early. More importantly it is clear than in its "normal" position the factory spline is not engaged. Rather than modify the shaft at this point it seems obvious what needs to be done. I created a spacer for the Giubo an additional support for the pilot stub on the shaft. This way the OEM spline is fully engaged and the front remains centered. Oh, and whose idea was it to assemble these splines dry? Nothing like a little powdered iron oxide to make a nice abrasive. Thanks for the video sir! It helped me before I even started the job.

    Nathan always enjoy your videos they're very informative. can you make a video on putting an M 54 from a 3 Series or 5 series into a 53 X5 chassis and note the differences between the motor please. I noticed you had a similar video for putting up V8 from a 7:40 or 5:40 into an X5 and I would like you to do the same for the 6 cylinder if it's possible. thank you.

      +Quale Jendayi thanks for watching and im glad the videos help, the m54 swap from a e39 or m54 is the same you will for sure need to do the oil pan and sump swap, and you will have to use the intake from the x5 if you are using a non 3.0engine

      thanks for your prompt response. Just to recap, I only have to swap the oil pan to accommodate the axle because I am using a rwd engine. I do not have to swap the oil pump. just want to make sure before I purchase purchase the engine. also are there any differences in the m54 from You 2000 to 2006. thanks again for your time. the appreciate it

    • @NathansBMWWorkshop
      @NathansBMWWorkshop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Quale Jendayi You will have to swap the oil pump and pan, and probably the oil drive chain which means you will have to re-time the engine, which takes special tools , you can use any 99and up m52tu and m54 up to 2003 or 2004 depending on what donor car you have, you will need to use the intake manifold and throttle body and engine wiring from the x5, why are you swapping the engine?

    Do you need to rebalance driveshaft after welding new part on?

    • @dexsisouvong
      @dexsisouvong 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes it will be out of round after weld and it will eventually warp the shaft and snap the end piece

      Who would I take the drive shaft to to get it balanced?

    • @Coloradofinest
      @Coloradofinest 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@poonjab8078 what i found out was the front shaft on my x5 was never balanced from factory. If yours has no weights on it the its unbalanced as well. Bmw just used the rubber to take the small amount of any vibration away. I took mine over 100mph smooth all the way. I have a video on doing the job if needed i will post link

    What were symptoms on the car that this needed to be replaced? Thanks for the video.

      +Dennis Canon This car was apart anyway and i just checked it, otherwise there is no warning until it strips and the vehicle will not move, usually it is the v8 x5's that have between 150k and 200k miles

      Nathan's DIY Garage Thanks for the video nate im getting ready to replace drive shaft with extension, as my mechanic charged me 1000$ bux for a transfer case 6 months ago and its broken again, smh! Do you think i can do it with out taking the transfer case off?
      Thx O.

  • @fenderblender1974
    @fenderblender1974 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nathan, did you ever tried to weld the front shaft directly to the output shaft of the transfer case? My garage is planning to do this, they said it is done before with success, is there any reason not to do so you think?

    This just seems like a repair BMW should do for all it's customers. Bad design obviously. Things like this are why I decided not to buy a 2002 X5i 3.0. I really liked the test drive too. Great SAV, bad overall quality.

    Lol u know there’s no need for this there’s a proper way to do this it can be done without removing the diff or transfer case lol
