  • In todays video I am fixing a driveshaft vibration/shudder that recently developed on my 2001 BMW 330i Flip Project. This is my 3rd time pulling the driveshaft in like 4 days. Weve already replaced the engine mounts, trans mounts, flex disc, and center support bearing! Hopefully I can fix it!

    I thought my diff was going out for sure at first when I began hearing this clicking ticking sound as of the last two months this noise started. I did a new flex disc last year and the center support didn’t look torn. I don’t hear any vibration but there is more noise in the cabin and the other night I was driving home on the freeway with my sound system off which is something I never do lol. I spent a good year on perfecting the audio in the e36m3 so I’m always playing tunes now that it’s dialed. So the other night I sort of heard a new humming noise which the car didn’t have before. And it’s not a wheel bearing since I’ve gotten the axle up in the air and throttle the car momentarily up to speed and jumped out slid under the car tried to listen to the noise and it’s getting scarier it almost seems to be coming out the transmission 😢

    Oh man you’re bringing me back to driveshaft vibrations in my ZHP 😂 I remember a shop first replaced my center support bearing but that only fixed 90 percent of the vibration…..in the end I had a buddy install a rebuilt driveshaft on it and that fixed the vibration one hundred percent….had him change the tranny mounts while he was in there too.

    I got a 2002 530i e39. 242K miles supper solid body. Last month one of the cylinder went out (burnt out exhaust valve). Have bought a used engine with 107K miles with 6 months warranty. It has tons of new part on the original engine (and I mean everything) before it gave up after 1000 miles. Kinda lazy to swap the engine. Willing to let it go with the new engine as a part of the deal. Located in the Bay Area as well.

When I first start to accelerate taking off underneath the center drive council arm rest there's a loud kinda grinding clank sound for a few seconds and then as it drives normal speed it stops. It sounds like its maybe coming from the top of the transmission I'm not sure. But it still drive really good at normal speed. So Im not sure please let me know ur idea if you can. Thanks

    This video might be old but it really helped me a lot when I changed my Driveshaft CV Joint, it came
    Out smooth since my old one was hard to move like yours, the issue is that my vibrations kept going, I changed the transmission mounts, guibo, CBS, I marked my driveshaft so I basically put it back the way it was, torque everything to specs, I done this job 6 times in the lapse of 2 months, I don’t know what else to do, also the 2 half’s do the driveshaft where they meet, look fine nothing out of the ordinary
    Vibrations are at 30mph only when I push the gas and the cars goes over 3,000rpms, if I accelerate slow and gradually the car doesn’t shake like crazy underneath my butt, any suggestions? My car is a 2002 330ci
    When I bought the car after seven months, the cbs went out, I changed it and everything worked perfectly, also change the guibo, 3 months later vibrations came back, I thought it was the same thing (cbs) but it look fine to me, still changed again, it didn’t fix the problem, That’s when I started to go crazy about it and did this job 5 more times, even change the driveshaft CV joint and vibrations still there, change the transmission mount, vibrations still there, I’m tire, I love this car but what else can I do?

    Man you got it done…Thank you for sharing with us. I need to borrow some of your patience because I am about out… I couldn’t find trusted bmw mechanic in my area to replace my daughter’s 2004 bmw 330i blown head gasket, so I bought a $600 running 2003 bmw 325i. It only has 145000 miles on it but the interior was trash, and I was able to swap it with the interior from my daughter’s car. As I am waiting on the headliner to be redone, I started to replace the cooling system and after running the engine for a while I noticed a knock coming from under the hood as I turned it off. I started again and listened but couldn’t figure out where it comes from. I replaced the pulleys and checked and the bolts and nuts from the alternator and power steering pump but it’s still doing it. I am thinking it could come from the starter? But why it’s only doing it when I turn the engine off? I googled it and still nothing, I found at least 3 other TH-cam videos where they had the same problem but nobody was able to give them an answer and they never did follow up.
    So yes I understand how frustrating it can be when you have to figure it out on your own…

      @DayOffDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      What a job you got going on! Good on you for taking on the challenge and swapping out all of that interior! That’s a big job 👍🏻
      I wish I could help you with that knocking noise! First things that come to mind are brake booster or ABS module? What a head scratcher… I’m sure it’s been driving you crazy. Maybe someone on the channel has some info? If I remember I’ll try to make an announcement in a future video. It’s after the engine and ignition are turned off?!

    I'm having this exact same issue! Left turns from stop on throttle: vibes at low speed. I can reproduce at 20mph with hard throttle. Looks like I need to rebuild the driveshaft.

    I have an e39 5 with this exact issue going on a couple years. I see e46 is nearly identical in design. I had it to a shop who changed the CSB (it did look bad) but that didn't fix the issue at all only changed the RPM it would happen. I had read around about this before-hand and thd recommendation seems to be to change the Giubo, CSB, and CV joint all at the same time. I had told thus shop that before they worked on it but they said 100% only CSB. Well, car wasn't fixed and then they didn't want to continue working on it nor refund my money.
    I have taken up the work myself as there are no BMW shops around here and I have done basically all other work to the car over the years. The other shop crossthreaded all my shaft bolts, put 3 of them back on backwards, and claimed the giubo is good. There us substantial evidence of dry rot, and compared to the new replacement I bought it seems excessively flexible (you can poke this thing with a finger) while the new one is very firm, solid rubber with only a little bit of flex. I'm hoping this resolves it. If it doesn't, I guess Ill be looking at the CV next.
    All the bushings are intact but show some signs of dry rot and are not soft like this giubo is. Im hoping replacement will fix the issue.

    Fyi, that OEM clamp has a “protruding” parts which sits far more out than the rest of the ring. So you put the clam on the setting it’s needs to for your application (so in your situation at the max setting), then you take some “concrete braiding pliers”, and snap together the protruding part I talked earlier. That will let you sett the clamping force its needs to have.

    Oh dear, clamping a thin-walled tube into a flat-jawed vice. If that compresses the tube, it could affect the balance and defeat the object of the job, There are clip on Vee Jaws that will better distribute the pressure
    Better way to remove the CV joint - place the joint horizontally over the top of the vice jaws, and then just hammer the end of the splined shaft and let the shaft pop out (holdind the drive shaft). Although the length of the shaft is more than the height of the bench vice, just flex the shaft at the centre U-joint

    How did you remove the CV from the rear diff? There are two slots on opposite sides that appear to be intended for prying it loose. Is that the case? I’m having a heck of a time getting the rear of the driveshaft loose. Thanks in advance!

    I have a bmw f06 that has developed vibrations i have been chasing for the last month. Problem developed after a aweful pothole. New wheels, new tires, new rear rotors, and still have a vibration. Keeps me up at night and as well some grey hair the wife noticed the other day. Very happy you found your issue man! Cant wait to have that same feeling. 😂

      should check your suspension (struts, control & thrust arms, end links) and steering parts (tie rod, cv axle if xdrive) theres lots of joints that can go bad after hitting something hard enough

    • @DayOffDIY
      @DayOffDIY  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TK has some good points! its possible it couldve caused a driveshaft issue... what wheel did the pothole hit? if it was a drive wheel like the rear end, it couldve damaged CV axles

    • @Chaos1187me
      @Chaos1187me 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you both for your replies. I was thinking to take it in for alignment and ask them to check suspension for damage after pothole.
      I've hit pot holes on both left and right wheels. Left worse than the right (roads here suck and drive 3hrs a day typically). I was thinking if they don't find anything during alignment to move forward with swapping driveshaft guibos, center support bearing, and rear diff bushings.

      you could always have a shop run the car on a lift and look for anything out of balance, cars dont like to run with fully drooped suspension but it might work @@Chaos1187me

      you can unscrew the drive shaft from the drive axle and start the engine, turn off the traction control, there will be abs errors which will then have to be cleared

  • @adasterdezaster2865

    Alec, I can't tell from the video but when you replace the center bearing on the driveshaft and the butyl tape that goes above it the repair manual calls out putting mineral oil in between the driveshaft tunnel and the butyl tape. You don't want the butyl tape adhering to the car because it will cause the very vibration you were seeing. It looked to me the new bearing was just as stiff as the old bearing. The old bearing looked to be in pretty good shape. Thank you for the content as usual.

    • @DayOffDIY
      @DayOffDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Damn dude you have a really good point! The butyl tape is stuck to the trans tunnel right now, I didn’t think of the mineral oil part. I don’t have it in me to get back in there and change it yet, but the vibration is fixed so I’m happy about that. I’d say the CV is a bit smoother than the old one, I beat it up a bit with the mallet when sandwiching the driveshaft back together after the CSB repair during the torque converter video…
