    Grizzley customer service is outstanding still today. I have this same saw, just died one day a few months ago. Not being an electrician I called up grizzly and a 2 minute phone call with troubleshooting we determined I needed to contact an electrician. One of the best customer service experiences of my life.

    Rich,
    First the 1023 comes in both 3HP and 5 HP versions. We bought the 1023RLX (3 HP) last September instead of the 0691 (the 0690 with the extension table.) After watching your review, I can offer the following comments about the differences between these two similar lines:
    1. On the 1023RLX, the power cord is 8ft long instead of 6 ft on the 0690 and, it is located on the back of the saw, so you don't lose the width of the cabinet.
    2. The dust port on the 1023 is located on the rear of the saw instead of on the right side under the table.
    3. The riving knife on the 1023 is designed differently and unlike on the 0690, it is a royal pain to install and remove. Fortunately, we rarely need to remove it.
    4. Unlike the 0690, the 1023 does not come with a set of Allen wrenches, just the odd wrench.
    5. And finally, the 0690 series is 220 v while the 1023 series is 240 v.
    Myself, I prefer the power cord and dust port being on the rear of the saw. Our saw was made in 2014.

    I just received my Grizzly G0771 10" Hybrid, which is their lower price hybrid saw, but it fits my needs. I absolutely love it! The saw went together without any issues, and like yours, I did not need to use any shims on the table extensions. In fact, everything lined up perfectly, including the fence. The one thing I wish my model had is, the door motor cover is screwed on, and not on a hinge.

    I have a Laguna table saw which I need a part for. Laguna tells me to go to a Laguna dealer, Laguna dealers tell me to go to Laguna. So what you said is absolutely correct.

    i was scared too about Laguna's customer service when i bought my 1412 bandsaw. i recently had an issue with a loose tire and called them on sunday night at 7:00 PM (they were closed) at 9:00 AM on Monday morning i got a call and 2 days later received replacement parts that solved my issue. Bottom line, dont be afraid of Laguna's customer service, it has been great for me.

    I would have gotten the 1023 but it was out of stock. I was having trouble deciding between the two saws. There were things I like about both so when the one wasn't available it made the decision easy.

    I bought this saw based on your review. Thanks. Putting it together right now. My only concern is that the gears will get coated with sawdust since they are not shielded at all. They are covered in grease and work great now, but will they get all gummed up with sawdust making adjustments harder? I imagine not since they are so robust. Sawdust or not they will probably work the same. Might have to add some grease in the future. Anyway, thanks for the review. This saw is so heavy duty and nice, yet has a price point much better than comparable saws. So glad I found this video.

      Ditto. I wish Rich had taken the time to contrast the Chinese-made 690 with the Taiwanese-made 1023s, which is where I think I'm leaning.

  • @Snurre86
    @Snurre86 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    13:16 I agree, I feel that it is more unsafe with the guard as you can't see where the blade is. Also it makes it harder to see and make a right cut. But I do not even use a riving knife but I probably should start using that again.

    Great review. Thanks. I'm in the UK,and have ordered this saw (made by Harvey in China)..Over here it is badged as the 'Xcalibur'. As far as I know, it is identical to this Grizzly. Unfortunately in the UK you have to pay £1500 to get your hands on one of these.

    I agree that the power cord is too short. Already had my power run and too far away. Think I'll be able to move it to get it closer. Very impressed with this saw... my only complaint is there were some light scratches on the main table (wings were perfect) however so light that will not impact performance - just visual.

    Hope all is well and that the Grizzly is as well. I’ve been stuck between this Grizzly and the Shop Fox W1819. I like the looks of the Shop Fox aesthetically more but I think the Grizzly is a very nice looking as well. I guess the pro for the Shop Fox model is the Leeson motor, miter and fence is a little nicer - otherwise basically same. But again I’m hung up lol.

  • @deanmiller294

    Purchased this saw after reviewing hundreds of TH-cam videos. This video sold me on it. Set up was straight forward. My only hang up is when I lock the fence down I have to place my hand on the middle of it to keep the end from lifting up. What am I doing wrong? It glides easily and is about 1/16” above the table and is dead on accurate.

    Just wanted to contribute my experience with customer service. I own a Grizzly 8" jointer and it has some issues with the motor mount. Grizzly was responsive; send replacement parts and even a replacement belt.
    I also own a Laguna 18"LT 3000 bandsaw. I purchased some blades at the time of order from a different company. Not long after the saw arrived I started having Resaw issues that I couldn't solve on my own so I emailed their CS in the morning. Had 2 missed calls from them within probably an hour, the second was from a manager. When I called back the tech spent more than a hour with me on the phone. The cause for my troubles was the blade (blades actually). They offered me a Resaw King blade at a discounted price. Called after the blade was delivered to make sure my problems were resolved.
    In summary, I couldn't have asked for a better CS experience from Laguna. I think they turned that department around a few years ago. And the fit and finish of Laguna was very nice. Grizzly jointer was fine too, but not to the same level and frankly that's reflected in Grizzly's low cost/high value approach. Happy with both.

    • @affromma
      @affromma 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      same jointer, same problems, same CS response. However, with the 14" BS, it was another matter ... which resulted in Grizzly 'black-listing' me.

    Thanks for the review. I’m looking at the Grizzly G0605X1 12” table saw. It’s a 5hp
    I’ve been using a 1&1/2hp Delta 10” Contractors model tablesaw and I’m tired of the motor bogging down when cutting thick lumber or figured lumber even using a premium blade.

    I originally ordered the 1.75v Laguna from Woodcraft. After 1-1/2 weeks I still hadn't gotten a shipping notification. When I called them they said they don't ship it - Laguna does and to wait a couple days and see what happens. Wrong answer. No, "I'm sorry, sir, I don't know what happened but I'll look into personally, get it taken care of and then call you back."
    So a few days later I called again and got the same, "We don't ship it - Laguna does." Again, no apology, nothing about looking into it or anything else. I cancelled the order on the spot and after a few more days of research ordered this saw instead. I got a call two days later from UPS to make a drop-off appointment. It was during my research after the Laguna fiasco that I saw all kinds of comments all over the internet about how bad Laguna customer service is. I think I dodged a bullet here. It looked like a nice saw and typically I don't ever need any kind of support but with this kind of expense I don't want any problems in case there is a problem. And it sounds like Laguna has a well-deserved bad rep for customer service.

    I love my grizzly 690, Only complaint is that I have a hard time getting the inserts level to the table so when I'm cutting thin / short stock it sometimes hangs when pushing it through. This is my first table saw so maybe it's just me, I plan on making a custom insert one day to see if it's any better.

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tommy how thick is the plate on the 690? The way they use jacking screws on mine with a hook fastener on back and pull down on front makes it easy to get things out of whack. Once you figure it out the insert is fine. My insert is about 7/16" thick (guess). If yours is the same as mine try loosening the back screw or completely removing it. Drop your plate in and adjust the four jacking screws until the plate sits the way you want it. It should be true at that point. Reinstall the back screw so that is just starting to pull up and touch when its in place. And finally install your front hold down screw. It doesn't need to be very tight as you can bow the plate by torquing it down too much.

    • @tommyd1659
      @tommyd1659 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      My plate is the same as yours, I have it fairly flat now after trying to adjust again, the edges of the insert are slightly rounded and higher than the flat part of the insert also due to powder coat build up and I need to sand down but hate to mess up the red paint job, other than the insert I have had no issues and really like the saw.

    Excellent review, very well informed individual. I am on the fence right now between the 690/1 and the newer 1023 series. I'm usually dissuaded by newer technology until it has proven to be of better quality and the new belt system has me wondering. The 690/1 has a better motor from Leeson, however the 1023 is manufactured in a Taiwanese plant where QA is of typically higher standard. I like the 12" left of blade capacity the 690/1 offers over that of the 1023 which has 8 inches. It's a real toss up. I do agree that the 690 has the "appearance" of a slightly higher quality machine.

    I'm pretty much sold on this saw, the one thing that's really important to me is the system for squaring the table. Does this saw have a screw for micro adjusting/aligning the blade to the miter slots?

    our saw was made in 2014, so Grizzly may have changed the way the riving knife goes on on the 1023. Our miter gauge is not as nice.
    If you buy the 1023RLX and want a mobile base, be sure to get the trailer for the extension table in addition to the mobile base for the saw.
    We own 5 Grizzly machines and I have the same complaints about each manual.
    1. The directions are illogical, having you install something now which is in the way later or having you do something when the part needed hasn' been installed yet.
    2. Although Grizzly makes the Shop Fox mobile bases, there is little or no acknowledgment of the bases in the instructions. You will have to decide when to install them.
    3. The instructions for the band saw (0555LANV) and 8" jointer were incomplete. Thankfully, Grizzly has videos which fill in he blanks.
    IMO, Grizzly could easily eliminate these problems by having someone who is not familiar with the machines, set them up by following the instructions step-by-step.

    Any chance you can elaborate further on why you went with the 690 as opposed to the 1023? I'm struggling with the decision. I like the belt drive system of the 1023, but I like the larger rip capacity of the 690. Its a $200 difference between the 2 right now.

    I bought one of these about 20 years ago.
    After using it for a few months, I noticed that it was burning the edges when ripping with the blade tilted. After messing around with it for while, I discovered the has a fatal design flaw. When you tilt the blade past about 25 degrees, the weight of the motor would pull the blade out of parallel because of the slop in the milling and poor design. There is no solution to this problem.
    Two other issues. The blade tilt lock becomes full of sawdust and is almost impossible to securely lock the blade with out over tightening.
    The clean out is not on the front - stupid design, you have to crawl around on the floor.
    I bit the bullet and purchased a General. Grizzly and General are not even in the same league.
    I use the Grizzly as a router table now - job it does extremely well.

    • @affromma
      @affromma 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would you know if this 'design flaw' exists with the 1023 or 0651? How does General's design differ?
