  • Knowing when to use the handbrake can be a difficult decision for a new driver, as it can seem like an unnecessary distraction that just makes driving more difficult. However, the appropriate use of the handbrake can actually make driving easier and safer, so this video will show the purpose of the handbrake, when to use it on a driving test, and a few situations when the handbrake can be useful.
    Video chapters:

    Very useful information. My driving instructor is now getting me to use the handbrake and in neutral when parking at lights instead of just using clutch and brake. I have to practice more cause right now a lot of time I'm putting the clutch further up after biting point and trying to go and stalling the vehicle when I release the handbrake. I need to keep the clutch steady when releasing handbrake. It's funny cause I do well with clutch control at junctions and hills but struggle when I also have to focus on the parking brake. It's annoying me so much at the moment!

    Two useful terms are "short stay" ie into 1st then handbrake if required, & "long stay" ie handbrake on and into neutral (always handbrake before neutral - a moving vehicle should never be in neutral ie coasting, only whenever first secured in a stationary condition on the parking brake). To determine which to use remember the saying "when a pause becomes a wait - handbrake on". This is important at uphill stops as holding on clutch biting point for more than a few seconds will burn out the clutch & waste fuel. Incidentally applying a traditional handbrake without pressing the release button (ratcheting as the advanced driving community call it) will apart from sounding annoying wear the ratchet over time, despite what the commentator in the video might say - worn ratchet = MOT fail!

    Hi there! This video has been incredibly helpful. It's useful to know the different occasions in which we should use our handbrake. Definitely learnt a few things I didn't know about before.
    I was wondering if you could do a video on parking uphill/downhill and what gear we should put it in when leaving the car stationary. I've been told to put it in gear 2 if my car is parked on a downhill slope and in gear 1 if it's parked uphill. I am aware of parking with the steering wheel in full lock to the left or right depending on the road you've parked on to prevent the car from rolling. But, in case the handbrake cable snaps, is it best to leave your car in gear? If so, what gear should it be left in? Or should the car be left in neutral?
    Many thanks!

      +Khadiza Bibi Thanks for the comment! When we park on hills we usually pull the handbrake on firmly and select 1st gear. Thankfully it's very very rare for a handbrake to fail so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

      In an automatic car there is normally no need to use the handbrake whilst driving, as the Park setting of the transmission can hold the car stationary when needed. Our next video (How to drive an automatic car) might help!

    How much does the clutch have to be off before releasing the handbrake? And how much gas? Is it just like getting the bite without it, I really don't need to use it because I've got the bite, but I think I need to learn just in case I'll need it. I'm just not sure where to release the brake

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s hard to answer any of those questions precisely - as the answer will vary from car to car. With experience you’ll know how much power or clutch bite is needed - but for now I’m sure your instructor will help. Good luck!

    What is interesting is that use of the hand brake while driving is very uncommon at traffic signals in the USA. A lot of drivers (both automatic and manual) stop the car at traffic lights and stop signs with the foot brake and keep it depressed till the light turns green. In the USA, we don't have any brake light dazzle rules either, as most drivers stop with their brake lights on and they stay on till the light turns green. In fact we are taught to look for brake lights to know if a car is stopped or slowing down!
    I didn't know about drivers using the hand brake at traffic lights until I saw some of these driving videos from Europe (and I drive a manual BTW). When I learned to drive in the USA, I was taught to stop at lights with just the foot brake and put the car in neutral or with clutch and brake down and leave it in 1st gear. On automatic cars in the USA, I and most other drivers are taught just leave it in "Drive" with the foot brake on while stopped. A lot of people in the USA refer to the hand brake as the "Emergency Brake" or "E-Brake" or "Parking Brake", and primarily use it for parking or while the car is stopped and turned off in a parking space. Occasionally I will use the hand break when going up a steep hill to prevent roll back but that is about it while starting to move in most cases.
    Was I taught wrong or does this reflect driver education curriculum differences between USA and UK (and perhaps other countries as well)?

      Thanks for you comment! There isn’t any ‘right or wrong’ really, just different styles of driving - just as there is with steering technique. Ultimately as long as the car is in full control then that’s all that matters!

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool What are you going to do when you've secured the vehicle with the footbrake, the handbrake is off, and you get clobbered from behind? I can tell you from experience that your feet will NOT necessarily remain on the pedals, and the car then has only one way to go. That happened to me just over ten years ago, and it's no joke when you're first in the queue at a busy junction, I can tell you!

    I know this video was posted a while ago now but I have a question, I have my practical test booked for the 20th of December (managed to get a cancellation 2 days after passing my theory and being a full motorcycle licence holder I'm test ready after just 22hrs of lessons 🙌)
    When my brother learnt his instructor told him "if you have time to think about applying the handbrake then you should"
    In all my lesson I've only ever used it on hill starts or when I've finished any manoeuvres I've preformed. My instructor says that as long as you're confident the car isn't going to roll then there's no need to apply it but have quite often been sat at traffic lights for a good few minutes with my foot on the brake instead, I'm confident that the car is stopped and will remain stationary whilst I hold the pedal down but I will not be happy if I do this on my test and get a failure for the lack of handbrake use.. Is she right in what she says and I'll be okay providing the car doesn't roll or should I be learning to apply it pretty sharpish in my next 2 lessons before Thursday?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your instructor is correct - as long as the vehicle is under full control then it doesn't matter which brake you use. Saying that we prefer to use the handbrake a little more often, but that's just us!

      There is little doubt that _most of the time_ you will get away with securing the vehicle with the footbrake in traffic queues, but bitter experience has taught me that it is not a good idea. Just over ten years ago, I was waiting at traffic lights at a crossroads, with no traffic in front. A lorry driver behind me failed to apply his brakes in time, and ran into the back of my car. I have no memory of the collsion itself, because I was briefly knocked unconscious by the impact. Inevitably, my vehicle was propelled towards the busy junction, but thankfully, stopped just short of it.
      According to the police, if my handbrake had not been applied at the time, I would almost certainly have been killed. The footbrake was obviouly not in use because I was unconscious, and the only thing that had stopped my vehicle from rolling into the path of the fast-moving traffic was the handbrake.
      Please, take it from someone who found out the hard way: do not think for one second that covering the footbrake alone is a safe and secure practice.

    This is the UK edition of the handbrake usage. We’re talking US Edition. Typical use for a E Break (Handbrake) is if your parking on a hill or if don’t have any brakes and can’t stop you pull the Handbrake and make sure you have both hands tight on the wheel

    • @collinslfc
      @collinslfc 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you don't have any brakes you shouldn't be driving the car...
      But if you do have the unfortunate position of brake failure, you don't just "pull the handbrake" as that would lock the rear wheels and cause the car to skid. You would have to use it on/off on/off on/off.

  • @joaocabral4999
    @joaocabral4999 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Everyone I tell about the usage of the handbrake on busy junctions or roundabouts says it's unnecessary if you know how to properly manage the biting point, or it's simply an over-complication. I don't know if it's different here in Portugal, and I haven't gotten my driver's license yet (currently still taking driving lessons, and I probably won't try out that technique until I get my own car). Do you think people are wrong to just write it off as just a superfluous technique for people who don't know how to properly drive?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't worry about what other people think - just use it where you find it useful. We find it quite useful in some situations, such as really steep hills or very busy junctions - but don't feel that we must use it every time we stop.

    Love your channel! In this video you don't mention using the handbrake at a "STOP" sign? I was taught that Stop, means "STOP", apply handbrake, check visibility before proceeding? I also note that your driver several times when slowing to a crawl, puts the car in 1st gear (2:10) or neutral (0:11) THEN applies the handbrake. I was was taught the other way round? Handbrake FIRST, then Gear or Neutral? Your feedback would be appreciated.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some instructors like to suggest certain routines as you mention, but there are no official rules about either of those situations - as long as the car is in full control then you're fine. In both cases, the foot brake was held on so there was no chance of the car rolling away. Feel free to use whatever method you prefer.

    • @philkelly4732
      @philkelly4732 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool Thanks for your reply. When holding the car on the footbrake, surely it is not under FULL control because for example, you could be hit from the rear and the impact would surely result the the foot brake being released?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

      You could argue that the handbrake only brakes two wheels, but the foot brake brakes all four so would stop the car quicker after an impact - as long as the driver keeps the brake pedal pushed.... Perhaps we are over-thinking this!

      No, you don't _have_ to. Generally speaking, if a stop becomes a wait, then it's better to put the handbrake on. I always put mine on waiting in a queue, because if another vehicle crashes into from behind, your car could be propelled into the one in front - which may be deemed _your_ fault, especially if you failed to take reasonable precautions to prevent it (i.e. applied your handbrake). Insurance companies will do anything - absolutely anything - to avoid paying out, and if it emerged your car was not secured at the time of the collision, then you could be held partly or even wholly responsible for the damage. Don't take the risk - the handbrake is there to keep you out of trouble, so _use_ it.

    It is my opinion that 99.9% of drivers never use the handbrake when waiting for lights to change or in many cases when stopped to pick up passengers. I have sat behind cars for 10 minutes when the road ahead is not clear and all that time the drivers in front have their foot clamped to the foot brake. As is mentioned here , during the night those brake lights are shining in the eyes of drivers behind.. Rule 14 of the Highway Code says one should not shine lights unnecessarily. I think this has come about by sub standard driving tuition. Why else? I was taught by a gentleman 54 years ago and he stressed the use of the handbrake always. It is vanishingly rare for todays drivers to use the handbrake appropriately including the police who one would have thought would set an example..

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you need help judging how close the front left wheel is to the edge of the road? This is a judgement that will get easier with practice - but if you are having a little trouble, try this; Carefully park the car about 30cm from the kerb, and then from the drivers seat look how the line of the kerb in front of the car meets the top of the dashboard in front of you. If you remember this 'reference point' and line the kerb up with the same point next time you stop the car you should always be the same distance from the kerb!

  • @AJ56
    @AJ56 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding the last part, handbrakes should never be used in the event of primary brake failure, unless you’re at parking speeds, not only will it be nearly useless it can also lock up the rear wheels and cause loss of control. Instead downshifting to the lowest possible gear ratio would be the only option if quick de-acceleration is required.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the least part I stopped the car from over 20mph without any danger. Of course I was careful how hard I used the handbrake, just like the normal footbrake system. Whilst engine braking will slow the car a little, it can never fully stop the car, and if driving a rear wheel drive vehicle the under-rotation of the rear wheels will also cause the car to skid. Therefore the careful use of the handbrake is recommended in the event of brake failure.

    • @AJ56
      @AJ56 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Advance Driving School Yes at slow speeds like 20-25 mph you can use the handbrake to stop, but downshifting will be much quicker at say 50-60 mph (or higher). Obviously once you’re slow enough the handbrake is the only way to come to a complete stop. Btw what would you recommend in a newer car with an electronic handbrake, you can’t really modulate pressure as it’s just a button.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our new cars have electric handbrakes, and they apply the brake quickly and firmly. In the unlikely event of a brake failure we would probably still use it anyway and hope we could control any resulting skid - better than a guaranteed crash into whatever is in front of us!

  • @qud3913
