    Another reason for stalling is assuming you don't deserve to be on the road. You are an inconvenience to other road users. This leads to panic and then forgetting the fundamentals.

      @@1992AJL Yes, A Lewis, I agree. That's when I start to get a bit panicky, but not when I'm on level ground (I have learned to ignore people too close to me then). It's when I'm stopped at lights or in traffic going uphill - that's when I falter (I can't hear the engine, so listening for a sound change when the clutch bites is meaningless to me).
      Should have seen me on my last lesson: big, new, shiny BMW right behind my bumper and, worried that I might roll back into it, I sent my car kangarooing up the hill when the lights finally turned green. What annoyed me most was - this is the SECOND time this same BMW has done this to me in recent weeks!

    How do we remember which gear we're in? I keep forgetting, and am forced to either look down at the gear stick, or rely on the gear indicator in the instrument cluster, but I don't want to rely on that all the time. Any tips? I might try saying out loud the number of the gear, after every gear change, so that it lingers in my memory for a little while

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you have forgotten your current gear a quick glance or tap on the gearstick with your hand is ok. However with practice you will eventually get used to how the engine sounds and know when it needs a gear change. Good luck 👍🏼

    • @alexwells
      @alexwells 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I had real trouble with this at the start, there is so much to think about that I could never remember what gear I was in (it still happens) and it used to worry me a lot.
      my 'solution' is to just gently touch the gear stick, you can get to know which position it's in from touch without needing to look down - to start with its 'up' or 'down' which can help you figure it out depending on speed etc but you get a feel for it and can tell 2nd from 4th for example
      I got a fair bit of stick for it from others as not everyone has this issue but you're not alone!

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexwells to better explain this; If you're in 2nd gear and want to go to third gear you literally shift up (directly up) so that the gear stick naturally falls into third. To go to 4th you go down and it naturally goes into 4th. This requires muscle memory of course, but is much easier then trying to "find" the 3rd gear.
      I had a shifter on a G403 logitech for racing games so I got alot of my muscle memory out of that. I'm a naturally anxious driver so it helped I didn't have to think too much about gear changing and focused more on how softly or gently I needed to release the clutch.

    • @gravemind6536
      @gravemind6536 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try and get used to the speeds you do in each gear for example if you are doing 20mph and your revs are at or above 2000RPM you are probably in 2nd gear and getting ready to shift up to 3rd it will come naturally at some point but in the meantime try to think about your revs and what speed you are doing. Cars generally like to shift gear every 10 mph or thereabouts.

    When i am at the biting point, i sometimes by mistake press the brake more thereby stalling the car. Is this normal or is there a problem with my car? This usually happens during uphill scenarios.
    basically, i want to know what would happen if I press (not hold) the brake at the biting point.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is normal. If you think about it, your left foot is asking the car to drive, and your right foot is asking the car to stop. The car can’t do both, so it stalls. Keep practicing your hill starts 👍🏼

    at 1:27, the driver put on some gas to slightly increase the engine power. was it steady or intermittent?
    do we have to keep our right foot on the gas pedal, from fully depressed clutch to half clutch to fully release clutch?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We press and hold the accelerator pedal, to keep the engine speed above 1000rpm as we pull away. This extra power reduces the chance of stalling, and help us get the car up to speed.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pulling away in 2nd gear is possible in any car if the clutch is slipped enough - but we wouldn’t recommend it as the clutch will wear out faster.

      Advance Driving School what does ‘slipped’ mean

    • @gravemind6536
      @gravemind6536 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      All cars even really underpowered ones move away in 2nd gear unless up a reasonably steep hill. A diesel or an engine with high low down torque will move away in 2nd with very little struggle heck I had a car that would pull away in 3rd gear, however you should move off in 1st unless its really icy otherwise you are just putting more wear on the clutch.

    • @gravemind6536
      @gravemind6536 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TA-os2ru slipping is the process of connecting the clutch with the flywheel that connects the engine and transmission, when you are at the biting point you are slipping the clutch, slipping is complete once the clutch is completely connected to the flywheel. In other words once you are doing bringing up the clutch pedal you are no longer slipping the clutch.

      Treating the clutch gently like this will actually give your clutch the best life - over 100,000 miles usually. If we engage the clutch too quickly it will feel jerky, and the sudden load will cause more wear to the clutch plates.

    Today am so fucking scared, I was at a hill and there was a car behind me, when i push the clutch and brake to stop the car from moving i held the brake and lift the clutch so I can feel the biting point, I lift off the brake then the car slowley moves back and almost hits the car behind me, I was a little scared and when i thought things couldn't get any worst, I was at a turn and the turn had a hill, I was in first, i wait for the biting point and feel the car duck down, I lift the clutch gently and apply little gas then the fuckin car starts to begin to lock up the rear wheel, I've been a car enthusiast since I was 5, and dreamt of owning a S15, now I feel like shit and that I should just ride my bike, it could be my instructor cause its my dad and am in Australia so he never tells me to use my the e brake when am at a hill and ready to take off, all I was told was to, clutch in, first gear, hold the brake, feel the biting point, let go of the clutch then go, clearly this didn't work and wasn't until when I got home when he told me that when we usually do the whole brake, biting point then go at hills, we were on flat ground, so when I went to a area near me which had more hills than LA, I used the same technique he taught me, I was mad because one, he never told me that for hills, u have to brake, first gear, lift of the clutch and feel the car start to shake or I don't know how to describe it, like when the car starts to want to creep forward but u got the brake down, then u go, like fucking hell mate I am sorry for swearing so much but I feel like my dreams are crushed simply because "I can't use the clutch and it's diesel so I can't imagine how hard it would be on Petrol" might as well give up now.

      Using a professional driving instructor would always be our recommendation when learning to drive - as they have much more practice with teaching pupils how to drive (it's their job!). Private practice with parents is good to gain more experience on the road, but in our opinion should only supplement proper driving lessons.

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool Ok thank u, they tell me that they want me to get comfortable driving on the road and being around other road users first before paying money for a instructor, I ask if i can get a instructor but they say why pay for an instructor when u can't even shift gears or clutch control, he makes me get in the car and just tells me to drive, when I locked the rear wheels, he didnt even tell me why or how it happened, am graduating high school next year and I feel nervous that all my friends have Tuned Japanese Cars while me on the other hand can't even go up hills, but yeah I've only been driving for about 10 home lessons over 1hr and still I feel nervous, I guess maybe the more time I spend on the road the more I will be more comfortable, and he dosnt seem to care that when people try to merge into my lane, I cut them off, today I just cut off a white Hyundai at 80mph at a 70 zone, am driving a Toyota Hilux, one of the big 4x4 cars so buddy must have been scared, plues I sometimes floor it at the lights when people look at me and want have a go at me cause am a learner, but still I feel like killing my self just because of hill starts

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like a classic 'Driving School of Mum & Dad'!!! Basically it's a lot cheaper to learn with your parents, but it's a lot more dangerous - as their car doesn't have dual controls to help prevent accidents in an emergency. In addition they may even teach you bad habits that will need sorting out once you start 'proper lessons' with an instructor. It sounds like they would be paying for your lessons, so I guess you'll have to go with what they want to do. Just keep as safe as possible though - as cutting people off whilst speeding doesn't sound that great...

      It is but you would have to redline 1st gear to shift up to 4th which will make for a horrible driving experience as it be nowhere as smooth as driving normally and it is harder on the clutch than changing gears normally.

    I still remember when if the car stalled from too much braking, all you had to do was let off the brakes while in gear.

      Just letting off the brakes wouldn’t restart the engine, as the car is still travelling too slowly in that gear. However, if there is enough momentum, you can select a lower gear and lift the clutch - which can ‘bump start’ the engine back into life 👍🏼
