You are absolutely amazing and I can tell you treat your sheep with loving care. I would love to buy a fleece and spin your wonderful fiber. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise.
I didn't thing I'd be watching a sheep shearing (or rooing!) video, but Roxanne Richardson has sent me here, and your video was thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks! from East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. 👍🦘🦘🦘🦘🦘
Thanks for so clearly explaining shearing vs. roo-ing. Im also now muchbmore likely to look for a Shetland fleece when igo to SAFF here in NC in October.
Thanks for sharing amazing video and insights. I believe shetland and Icelandic are one of the most ancient breeds. Their wool too is very durable. One character of ancient sheep i often hear is they naturally shed wool too. Is it true?
rooing is so interesting, but I bet your hands get tired!! This was a fun video, will be checking out your roving in Oct? (lol, like I need more, but who can resist!!)
Hey Jennifer my name is Mckensey (Jareds Wife) I appreciate the informative videos on your Shetland flock. I have a question for you, my daughter and I bought several Shetland lambs in October here in SE Kentucky. Our one lamb Sweat Pea is starting to roo. We started to gather her wool got a small section on her shoulders done but then stopped thinking that it might not be a good thing for her to be "naked" these next few winter months that are ahead of us. My question is if we should continue to harvest her wool or just let the rest go and see if it just stays on her until spring time? I appreciate any advice you may have.
Hi Mckensey - thank you for your comment - I am glad our videos are helpful for you. I can't really say what is going on with Sweet Pea - it could be a variety of things causing her to shed her wool now including a recent stress she went through, unusual climate conditions or maybe she is just shedding her lamb coat. If the wool is coming off really easily, then its probably going to fall off and become waste. Were you planning on using her wool? I think if it were me I would leave her be this year and let it just fall off naturally. If you tried to put a coat on to preserve the wool I worry it would felt or get ruined anyways. It will be interesting to see if the other ewe hits the rise at the correct time of year. I hope this helps!
Thank you for getting back to me quickly. My daughter and I were going to use the wool to start teaching ourselves how to spin the fiber into yarn. I think we will take your advice and just let it fall off naturally if it wants to. We only even noticed she was shedding when we were picking the debris and small sticks that were caught in her wool out and noticed clumps were coming out nicely with it. If Thank you again for the advice!
"Omg, girls! Yes, I look pretty, I know. But you don't have to all get in my personal space at the same time. Keep your dirty old noses out of my fancy new outfit! Yes yes, very pretty."
We use the coats to keep the wool clean, our supplier is here in the states - here is a blog post I wrote all about the coats. whisperingpinesshetlands.blogspot.com/2020/06/everything-i-can-think-of-to-tell-you.html I hope this helps!

Sheeps are sweet.

Wonderful to watch you roo. You've developed quite the rhythm...
Thanks Jillaine - I finished my last sheep today, I think I'm going to miss it! Love the hands on time with the individual sheep.

Thanks for the nice comment - I have heard that also about ancient breeds, but I can't say for sure!

Do you have a spreadsheet template available to share that you use for tracking wool stats?
Sure - send me an email and I can send you what i use. Thanks!
@@SoftShetlandWool I just sent you an email!

Very interesting. Is spinning rood fiber different than sheared?
Thanks! I think the biggest difference is in preparation, I don't really notice a difference when spinning it.
Ik wil zak met wol kopen 😅 op stuuren naar nederland ik betaal .
Thanks! I haven't figured out yet how to ship raw fleeces internationally - I need to research that!
Nice those shetlands are so tiny.
Yes they are! Thanks for taking the time to comment
Where can i buy a coat to cover the fleece like you have? It looks very durable!
I go to Rocky Sheep Company - here is the video I made interviewing the maker ->th-cam.com/video/QRKYvkNqKGA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ET51zr-pFmRP5CEO
I just got my first coats from Rocky!! He is awesome!
When do you put the coats on them?
Hi Patricia - we put coats on them late in the summer when we start them on hay
Hallo hier ist Beate aus Deutschland.Und ich wollte fragen, wie die Überzüge( Decken) heißen? Wofür Sie da sind? Und wo ich so etwas bekommen kann.

How do you know the right time to strip wool from a sheep?
They have a natural break, so y ou just check them every so often to see if they've hit the break
What is a “break”
How long does it take to roo the sheep? It looks very uncomfortable.
It depends, it can go very quickly.
Glad your not my mom.
thanks for the feedback
That sheep does not look like she's comfortable at all. At least shearing is done quicker.
Thank you for sharing your point of view
