As a Navajo woman i recognize the method bc our elders taught us to weave too. We use wool from sheep, use metal paddle combs, a wooden spindle that looks like a sword 😀 and it's rolled on the thigh rather than just twisted by hand. We use similar cleaning for wool n use plants n such to dye. Just found it neat, ur not the only ppl who do this generational. Beautiful work! 😍

As a spinner and weaver myself (in new zealand) it it very interesting to see how they seem to be using barely spun roving, along with single ply, to weave. I assume this does not totally strip all the good lanolin, and my guess is that such blankets and fabric at least partially felt over time, making it stronger and stronger as the years go on... which is kind of even more beautiful than just making a blanket that is it's best when just finished, because these blankets likely get better the more they are handled and used.
i love that she was spinning right from the handcards. i need to give that a go one of these days. as for the felting, i got nervous when they said that she washes the fiber with hot water, and rinses with cold. that is a recipe for disaster with fine wools (like Merino), but i guess that breed is less prone to felting from shock. this video and your comment are giving me the urge to play with some wool. i bought an old 4-shaft table loom last year, and i am desperate to start using it (i'm a weaving newb), but it needs a bit of refurbishing. i may card up some fiber and do a bit of spinning instead. you know how it goes when anyone starts talking about sheep!

Just one correction: may they be left in peace by Russia. There is one perpetrator in this war, naming it is important. Making general statements about peace makes it sound as if it's just two governments fighting and people want nothing to do with it.

I'll definitely share this video with my spinning and weaving groups, I pray that God ends this war soon- God bless you all and greetings from NYC!! 😄🤗🕊️💗🌷
I am the same! I don't know how to explain it. Like feeling part of a large weaving, you feel a tug on a far end (so far you cannot see with your own eyes) but you feel the movement and the connection. Then when I sit next and warp my loom, ball my skeins or quilt- I think of those others out there too. It's a nice feeling in a world that feels so isolating as of late.
Thank you for posting this! I’m a spinner and knitter, and I love to process (wash and clean) wool to prepare it for spinning. It was fun to see the ladies wind the wool onto distaffs from the carded wool, to prepare it for spinning. It was fun to know exactly what they were doing! It was also nice to see the sheep, which are also part of the heritage of the blanket-making craft. The brush-like tool the man was using to “comb” the wool is actually wool cards, for carding wool. The last step, where the blankets are washed in the stream, is called fulling. It makes the threads of the blanket mesh and stick together, to make a cohesive fabric. Slava Ukrainie! 🇺🇦
Glory to Heroes!🇺🇦 We hold on and continue to work because this is the only craft that makes us stronger. We still have many ideas that have not yet been implemented:))

It would be really great if you could post an update on how this business and their people are doing. Are they all safe?
They're safe for sure. It's a west of the country, no battles and no rocket attacks because it's a village
Ivano-Frankivsk region has been mostly safe, except for the airport strike on Feb 24th and one other airstrike later on but these guys are in the mountains and that is probably safest place in Ukraine right now.
Ofcourse not
Uh.... probably not!!!
cant see no war here
*I HAVE TWO OF THESE* though mine are just plain, no pattern. They are incredibly thick and very very warm - $450 is nothing for them, honestly...
Mine were given to me and are 70 years old. If you like them, please support these people and buy from them and their neighbours. You have my word you will not regret it. But it may take you a little while to get used to the weight if you are used to a duvet.
This family is made of kind and talented artists. It’s so beautiful to see this tradition carried on - & their ancestors must be incredibly proud.
I love the way they speak. They said the blanket will serve you for years. That’s exactly how all of our thought process should be… everything is serving us and we should be grateful for our blankets our utensils anything that serves us and helps bring peace and joy.
heyy,
most of my family still lives in this region and this kinda makes me feel like I'm home. In my childhood I got to know this culture and those people.
This video takes me back to the time.
Thank you for making it, great work:))
I was so happy to see this, even though it was posted 4 month ago. This is emotionally so supporting and makes my heart melt! To see that my national relatives are standing in all possible ways makes me feel relieved and even somewhat cry. I will definitely support their business whenever I can ❤️❤️
Thank you for this gem. We appreciate the way you share our culture with the world. Such an authentic, unrefined, and beautiful video that shows the depth of Ukrainian history and Hutsul cultural heritage.
Hustuls are NOT ukrainians!
@@90blackrock your ignorance is hilarious
@@90blackrock they just call themselves ukrainians and speak ukrainian language and always resisted russians even during the soviet union. But yeah keep pushing the notes that KGB told you to say
This video is a treasure. Heartwarming to see these villagers holding fast to lifestyle and industry in the face of modern perils. May God keep them all safe, and their flocks and implements. May they be left in peace. 🙏🙏🙏
May it be so. 🙏
Agreed!
Just one correction: may they be left in peace by Russia. There is one perpetrator in this war, naming it is important. Making general statements about peace makes it sound as if it's just two governments fighting and people want nothing to do with it.
Oh my gosh these are ssooooo beautiful! All original artists making traditional hand made goods like this should forever pass the tradition on to their kids, we NEED this kind of quality, uniqueness and aesthetic in our lives.....
Gorgeous work. Prayers for your people and country. 🌸🙏🏽🌸
This is my second time watching this and I'm blessed every time. I'm a knitter, crocheter, spinner and weaver among other trades, and I love watching and learning from other of the same people. I'll definitely share this video with my spinning and weaving groups, I pray that God ends this war soon- God bless you all and greetings from NYC!! 😄🤗🕊️💗🌷
Thank you❤️
I am the same!
Glory to Heroes!🇺🇦
We hold on and continue to work because this is the only craft that makes us stronger. We still have many ideas that have not yet been implemented:))
So beautiful, is the site still up? Would love to buy some blanket s, hope and pray that the families are ok...Sending prayers to the people of Ukraine..🙏❤

They are absolutely beautiful.. well done for keeping this wonderful tradition going 🇬🇧
I need to save up some money to buy a blanket, they're so beautiful and they have such and interesting history. The blankets and the people. I hope that weaving blankets isnt something that becomes lost in their culture, it's such a beautiful craft and one I would definitely be a part of if I lived there
I completely agree with you and support 😅
As an amateur weaver who learned how to weave using 19th century methods and tools, thank you for sharing this. It's so neat to see weavecraft from different places around the world.

Real wool blankets are not only much warmer, they seemingly last for ever. I'm 70 and still have a wool blanket handed down from at least as far back as my grandmother. I also have a hand made Eskimo parka which is wool with an outer protective shell, made by the Eskimos of Inuvik in the Northwest Territories of Canada. At -30 to -35 below F I was always warm. I have such respect for this family.
They have such a beautiful home and nostalgic setup! And that woven mountainscape piece is AMAZING!!!! I want to purchase everything! I even love what the woman is wearing 🥰
The vest on the younger daughter I really liked as well
What beautiful songs and what a beautiful beautiful craft…. So glad it isn’t being lost and I pray they have stayed safe. Thank you for bringing this to the world.
We have such blankets in every ukrainian family. My grandmother's blanket still looks good, the colors are bright, and after 50 years it is softer than it was.
Hand made from beginning to end - you all make the blankets so beautiful, thank you for showing the process 🇺🇦
Love this original hand made craft 👏🤙🙏Ukrainians our wonderful and loving people never give up never surrender I pray for you all guys speed God bless always be safe
The sight of wet wool will always reinvigorate me bc I can just smell it. My late grandmother was a weaver on the Navajo Nation, the hardwork, time, and dedication to getting your wool from raw to processed also the loom setup. It's something that will always give me the best memories and sending all the luv to these folks + those affected by war & greed.

I'm not a Hutsul weaver, but I am teaching my daughter weaving and how to card wool now. She's 7 and has a small table loom to practice on, and a few spindles to spin on if she wants to learn. Julia Hersko..was my grandmother's Maiden name. I have been told all my life of my hungarian decent. I have been trying desperately to find the region my family is from. Mostly women. And we all sew. It is so strange to feel such pull, and such determination, toward uncovering the lineage of my family. I was born and raised in America. Why should these things intrege me so? I am left only with one answer. I must know. If you could please help me discover this, even in its smallest amount, I would be so greatful. And if you cannot, then I still learned something! The work your family does is absolutely beautiful, and deserves to be noted as such. Rare is a family like yours, and I am filled with joy having stumbled across this video. Thank you so much for sharing. Blessed be.
I'm glad their children are continuing the tradition.
Thank you for keeping these skills alive.

TY and they are gorgeous and so are your people. I used to spin yarn on my spinning wheel back in the 70s. Your culture is similar and I feel it's in my DNA until today. Thank you for keeping traditions alive and well.
I started crocheting and looming when I was a kid in middle school, and I still do it now, 11 years later, I hope to do it my whole life, and I love talking to other fiber arts crafters, because I've never met a mean person who loves working on fiber arts projects, we're just a certain type of person who loves to work with our hands to make things that will last and with toys, make children smile, or with baby cloths, make the parents smile :)
I am a weaver using Victorian industrial machinery such as Dobcross looms. I absolutely loved seeing the more traditional ways in which wool is processed. Not much changed as we still do things the same way, just with iron machinery.
Brilliant film!

This is so beautiful and important for the survival of the planet. This is an excellent example of quality, slow "fashion". It will last for years and will not destroy the land. Beautiful.
For all the work that goes into this and the fact that these exact blankets are only made in a small region by specific people. They could ask much more for the price. In fact I would be willing to pay much more. This is something I would pay several thousands for a large piece to pass down to my daughter or son someday for their wedding. What a beautiful thing. I hope that they are well and not caught in this hideous war. Slava to this beautiful culture and people of this country. ❤.
