Also EmpLemon may have slept on Mango, but he is still a great creator and one of my inspirations. Here is a video by him that to this day remains one of my favorites on the site. Check it out: • TALLADEGA: Nascar's Mo...

Well people already know mang0, and the entire melee scene was always behind him. What makes the h box story so intriguing is that everyone disliked like hbox, and that’s why it got so popular.

    • @queuedjar4578
      @queuedjar4578 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@arayyang7943 I think it's more the fact that EmpLemon was already a popular youtuber (has more subscribers than basically any melee content creator, probably all of them combined tbh) were the main reasons why Never Ever Hbox got popular. The hbox doc is an entertaining story, but it gets some critical things painfully wrong which I can understand because it's more a video for entertainment, however those who know Melee are going to find issues with it. Not everyone knows mang0, particularly people who've never even seen a single stock of competitive melee, and that was the grand majority of the people watching EmpLemon's video. Fortunately, mang0 has spoken for himself and proved that he will always be relevant as long as he picks up the sticks, same as hbox.

I was the TO of Southern Arizona Smash Tournament 2 in 2007 (shown in the results screencap at 15:54 in the video). Unfortunately, I did not know much at the time about running a tournament, despite the fact that we had a couple cars full of California's best showing up, including Mango, Lucky, Gimpyfish, and DEHF (who is now known as Larry Lurr). I didn't know how to seed a bracket and a lot of people complained, but it was still a lot of fun and my first time meeting Mango. It was already pretty clear back then that he was going to be one of the best players in the world, and he won the tournament easily. I believe Forward, AZ's best at the time, got 2nd. Axe had not yet become a top player in AZ at the time.
I was hoping to see my tournament mentioned in this video, so thanks for the indirect shout out! Awesome work!

@@matthewflanagan9101 Eh. It has its biases and yeah I don't agree with the "god status" thing because tbh, the era of the gods ended when PPMD retired. Leffen broke that pantheon by winning majors and then Plup, Wizzrobe, Zain, and Axe carried on along with Mang0 and occasionally M2K (since he was playing Smash 4 at the time too). Hbox and Armada was the big rivalry with Mang0 getting the win time to time. So, yeah Mang0 did have a slump but he was always the "buster" as he'd say it lol.
So tbh, that doc was needed for Hbox. Again I know that doc is flawed but I loved it nonetheless. Hbox's hate was unacceptable, no matter how you spin it. Folks don't have to like him and I ain't saying he's perfect but to the point of throwing things at him? Like, really? Nah, I'm glad more folks stopped being assholes to him after that (and I'm saying this as more of a PPMD fan). Hbox GRINDED to get to where he is, and still does. Mang0 was someone, who, when I discovered, didn't like due to some of his toxic tendencies he exhibited early on in his career. Nowadays I feel like he's come a long way in his maturity and have found new respect for him, partly due to this documentary. However, I feel Hbox's story deserved to be heard more. That man faced so much hate just because he didn't play Melee how people wanted him to. A lesser man would have crumbled under so much hate. Hbox receiving all of this positive attention, I hope, changed many people's perspective on him. Mang0 and Hbox being on good terms now was heartwarming to see and I think it does wonders for his image. One of the most hated players in Melee history being held in equal esteem by a former rival and quite possibly the most popular player in Melee history is a beautiful thing to see.

I watched emplemon's HungryBox documentary and thought it was good, but I also thought: "Someoone should make a Mang0 documentary" and I am glad to see it done in such prestine fashion. From nailing the introduction with prologue, to the pacing throughout it, to the music choice, to the editing quality, to the amazing use of emperorlemon's video through comparison and metaphor.
You've gained a like, subscribe & I will be recommending this to peole who have watched the documentary. Thank you!

Emp is a edgy smart weird guy I would imagine from what I've seen of him and interactions with him irl he most likely just made the video because Melee is a redditor game and redditors don't like guys like hungry box but love mango and Zain and it was a reaction of his distain for the communities bad options I don't think he cared enough about melee to make a mango video and figures everyone else will it's low hanging fruit hungry box is one of those topics some guy post a random banger out of distain for reddit and leaves I've seen it with tsm apex and the saint Lois blues before and I few others I can't remember I call them reactionary essays classics at all times thier someone out their so mad at reddits opinions their cooking up a classic video that most people will watch

@@AusmaSarutobi2009AMVDon't get me wrong I think the original video is still great and am grateful for it to have been published. But it's quite clear that there's a bit of bias in the narrative, after all the documentary is about hungrybox. Dramatization is a part of all cinema

  • @sunstripe85
    @sunstripe85 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

My dude, I don't play or really care about esports, including Smash Bros. But you got me hooked and here I am, an hour into a documentary on a game I only vaguely knew about, focused on a person I hadn't heard of simply due to not knowing the game-- and I'm sitting here totally loving Mang0 like nobody's business!
This video is my main source of any info so my opinion isn't fully formed since I'd need to do a lot more research to get a full picture and to minimize chance of bias (like how someone watching that first video you mentioned would have unknowingly been super biased if they only knew any info from that.
But I have to say, based on Mang0's background, all the clips of him and his friends, the choices he made along the way both in terms of which characters to choose and why, and especially his real life choices-- and on top of that, the sportsmanship he seems to have.... I don't think I've ever respected anyone in any sports whether traditional or e-, than I do this dude right now.
Granted, I don't like sports so I could be missing someone-- but I also randomly watch videos or learn from others or read about things I don't care for just because I still find it interesting to understand what everyone else sees. And regardless of my personal interest, we are all human and it's still impressive or educational to learn about others.
At least based on an hour in at 59:00 (because I guess I don't know what is coming so it's possible my view would do a 180 by the end), I gotta say:
A large reason I don't like sports (aside from just generally having no interest in the games themselves) is the tendency toward egoism and Othering within the players and fans. Fans get WAY tf too invested in their team, especially traditional in person ones, to the point that what should be a fun experience where prowess can be showcased and everyone can respect it in the end, instead easily can turn into toxicity, fights and injuries, and at the very least a completely unnecessary dichotomization of similarly minded people.
And then the players themselves in traditional sports especially get treated like gods when they aren't, and they get paid way tf too much. But the game itself is also unfair to them because for so many people, time is against them. And they only have a couple decades at best to try to do all they can to "prove" themselves and to make money and a name, before they get thrown aside with a body that's been utterly destroyed in its prime by the very game that sustained it.
Not always the case of course but it just feels like that can be a common theme.
And the whole time, money is being wielded in both the foreground and background as a means to at "best" translate a human being to a number to quantify their "value", and at worst is maiming, threatening, and even killing the players themselves as they become nothing more than a pawn for those in power of money, and they are expected and at times forced to play unfairly in the interest of someone else's pocket. (I'm thinking of that South American soccer/futbol player who was known as the gentleman and seemingly this great guy and fantastic player who was murdered because of one accidental point loss for his team)
I have no respect for that entire situation. It's not helpful on any level that it just encourages people to assign their identity to whatever they play or watch, and especially within the fandom that can lead to toxicity. (Your video on Lindsey Jacobellis is a perfect example of that-- btw, that's what TH-cam randomly recommended me and I also don't care about snowboarding but I watched that video, and was so impressed by your style that I checked out your channel itself and that led me here).
At any rate, what I'm saying is my experience so far has been mixed on many levels for sports in all contexts, and I do know for sure there are great people involved as fans and as players etc... The issue I see is less the people themselves individually necessarily and more the greater community and setup as a whole.
It's a vicious cycle where the toxicity breeds and feeds on itself and, if not held in check by the industry or teams or fan communities themselves, can turn what should be a fun competition on the field into a life defining war on and off the field.
But Mang0 is exactly the type of person and exactly the sort of representation of sports that, if everyone were like him and the greater smash bros community I'm seeing portrayed here, would make sports be what I think fans THINK it is but often isn't.
He's exactly the type of person that I think as a total outsider IS completely legit to get behind, and who ultimately plays the game at the very heart for the fun or skill of it.
The fact that he made tough but wise choices multiple times in his life to step back to explore something more consistent in order to help his financial situation, and that when he came back he doesn't seem like he was a douche about it, and that he still left again in order to support his family and even his comment in that one video about being able to take his girlfriend to Red Lobster now that he won.... It's some of the most wholesome and endearing things I've seen in any top sports person.
And even where I paused to leave this comment... That Chillin guy looked so defeated by that 5-0 game, and seeing that clip where Mang0 stood up to back him up, while doing so in a really friendly and sportsmanship-focused way, and especially seeing the complete transformation on Chillin's face from that simple act of Mang0's plus the rival having a big smile too.... That is the epitome of what sports SHOULD be. And if all sports WERE like this, I would have way more respect for it and feel less frustrated by its prominence because it would be showcasing good behaviors and the best way for people to be able to be at odds with each other in friendly competitions while still having respect for all.
I also REALLY love how he chose and played his characters based on what was interesting and challenging to him... The way he challenged and changed the very understanding of some of the characters themselves, and especially how he challenged himself to adjust and adapt to the greater societal context of the game and community at different times.
To me, that's someone who's playing for all the right reasons so I would already love him. But given his background in a rough neighborhood being raised by a single mom, and his prowess in both physical and online sports, and his dedication that kept him from danger like gangs (which was not an easy task no doubt), it already would have garnered a higher level of respect from me.
But then you add into it that he's genuinely freaking incredible at the game and it's like -- WOW, this guy is so impressive and commendable!
The fact that he became best friends with his biggest rival back home says everything I believe could ever be said about his integrity and just who he is altogether as a sports player of any kind. And the fact that he thought of his family first every step of the way says everything you could ever need to know about who he is at heart as a human being.
Insofar as where I've paused: Mang0 my dude, I freaking love you ❤

OK. So the EMPLemon Doc is one of my favorite pieces of youtube content of all time. And after seeing this floating around my youtube recommendations for a while, and being initially dismissive of it, thinking it was riding on the coattails of the HBox vid. I finally decided to give it a go today. This is such a masterfully crafted narrative with an amazing thesis that left me feeling so stoked to be part of this community.
It was amazing how you both paid homage to EMPLemon's work, and how it helped you grow and learn your own craft, while simultaneously pointing out the problems and the journalistic integrity of the story that he spun.
And on the topic of Integrity. I love how you did such a great job with attributions, I hadn't seen the 9Hammer Animated video before, And your usage of the cutscene clips has me thinking about dusting off my copy of Starfox Zero to play for the first time. And I love that you took the time to create a document that credits all the sources of your audio and footage used.
    Excited to see mroe!

Im glad you started making documentaries, your videos have always been a delightful suprise and great addition to melee/video essay content on yt. The coolest part has been watching your storytelling getting better every video. Honestly, I thought the beginning of this documentary was chaotic, at least less focused than I'd like, but i felt the complete opposite as it went along. It tied together extremely well towards the end, thought it was beautiful. Maybe because Mang0s character/narrative works well with messy beginnings/explanations, your great eye and ability to bring the thesis together, or both. Either way im excited for whats next from you, and i think you are truly rivaling some of your inspirations.
