The fact that Mang0 spiked his controller becouse he was the one to lose the major to a Yoshi and then instantly goin for a hug becouse it was aMSa just warms my heart.
As you say, Mang0 didn't want to lose at all, much less to a Yoshi; there definitely was competitive passion in that throw that we can all empathize with, but he is nonetheless a great sport (and the GOAT).
That picture of Mang0 holding aMSa's fist up in celebration and sportsmanship at the end (52:58) is one of the most emotionally moving and cherishable pictures taken of our sport.
Mang0 was upset because he really wanted to win Big House 10. It was the biggest tournament of the year alongside Genesis, and Mang0 wanted to build his Goat case by winning it and being the #1 ranked player that year.
The Big House is a really important tournament for Mang0. I’m not sure why but he seems to want to win those more than other majors. Add onto that the magnitude of the tournament that year and how close he was to winning… I don’t think aMSa’s character was why he threw his controller.
yeah its understandable to be upset in the moment. He took that moment, collected himself, and then walked over and gave the winner a hug. Nothing wrong with that.
Mang0 has all of his big house wins tattooed around his arm, its an extremely important series to him and he was heating up before Amsa managed to stop him, had to let some of that anger out before he could go in for the hug. Its also important to note that in the final set the Mang0 chants got drowned out by Amsa chants, Mang0 chants getting drowned out at Big House of all tournaments is unheard of.

Despite knowing how the whole story ended, the way AsumSaus edited the biggest house Mango vs aMSa matches _still_ had me on the edge of my seat and gave me the jitters. The perfect presentation for the ultimate underdog story.

He's a huge win for the whole community! Every match ends with one winner and one loser. And at this level the outcome is basically a coin flip. So what's the point of being negative? It won't change the result, and in the worst case it could split the community, which then is a loss for everyone.
I think that joy and friendliness should be part of every competition. It's a sign of a great personality if you can even enjoy the win of your opponent. As long as there's any winner, there's a reason to party! So enjoy your time with all the people that came together for the same thing: To see an entertaining and exciting match :)

I know im not even halfway thru but i have to comment on how heartwarming it was to see Mew2King smile a little while shaking aMSa's hand after watching a mini compilation of him basically brooding while shaking other players hands. Truly shows how infectious aMSa's smile is
It really does seem like aMSa had this charm to him that made even the most jaded of melee players smile and not care about losing.

Probably one of those things where he's been playing the game so long, losing a set to a Yoshi was totally novel and fresh. Like seeing a new chapter open up in the same old book you've been reading for a decade.
This was an amazing documentary that had me hitting my desk & hopping up and down. The editing to capture the emotion and stakes through the commentator, the timely narriration blurbs, and the SEAMLESS animation. Explain VERY neiche smash-centric things to those unfamiliar.. pffft.... A++ my dude

I’ve watched this video several times since you first posted it. I watched this video three times while I road-tripped ~14 hours each way to compete in a Magic: the Gathering Regional Championship.
Your representation of aMSa’s competitive spirit, his drive to win, his humility in losing coupled with his hunger to come back stronger next time… it’s made me cry almost every time I’ve watched this video. This feeling when seeing aMSa’s story represented this way lights a fiery passion in my core that carried me to compete in my first major tournament in my own discipline, and although I lost, I took it with grace as aMSa would and committed to coming back again but stronger, with more practice, more commitment, etc.
Thank you AsumSaus. I’ve watched your videos for a long time, and you’ve consistently been the GOAT of Melee content, and this project is undoubtedly your Magnum Opus as far as I’m concerned.
I sincerely hope in the time since you made this video that you’ve been doing well, and I’m committed to watching whatever you post next.

the thing about a "play to win" mentality is that it pretty quickly teaches you to lose with grace. Amsa's constant sportsmanship is something to be admired.

Do you think aMSa was watching replays on his way to work for the hell of it? These weren't replays from his competitors: they were his own matches that he more then likely lost.
This dude completely had a 'Play to Win' mentality.
Except he never took it to the point that he was blaming others.
He accepted that his loses were because of some fault on his part.
He knew his character better then anyone else could.
He rose through the ranks, practicing and reviewing what he could do better.
I mean, there's no better example of this then Final Destination.
He absolutely dreaded and lost at that map every time he was counterpicked.
He realized that this was a weakness and he couldn't just ALWAYS give his opponent a free game... he couldn't give them that tool to take advantage of.
So he turned the tables and adopted a completely different playstyle FOR THAT VERY MAP!
Even the commentators were surprised!
But he did it.
He lost the first time he did it, but his BIGGEST WIN was on Final Destination."

This was a _fantastic_ production. Seriously. Editing, graphics, pacing, narration. You had me on the edge of my seat and emotional. And you made it easy to follow for people like me who aren't super familiar the Melee scene.
This is the greatest romanticism of sport I’ve seen since Moneyball and and I shed tears at “aMSa DID IT!” It’s impossible not to root for aMSa. Incredible work.

This video is legit an inspiration for me. I play ultimate but holy man I wish we had documentaries like this. This is unironically near EmpLemon as far as quality and writing, all the motifs you set up and moments I legit got goosebumps was crazy. And when he finally won, it was insane. Great job.

If yoshi wasn't a "decent pick" he couldn't of won bighouse 10. aMsa is incredible, but when people say stuff like "Yoshi/Pikachu are trash, Axe/Amsa are just gods" its some of the most copium takes I've ever heard. All of yoshis tools aMsa used to win bighouse 10 can be used by any other Yoshi player with dedication and skill. All of pikachus tools that Axe used at Summit 8 can be used by any other Pika player with dedication and skill (Or as we see out of box pikas like Swift, even more potential)

This also shows that, whatever the naysayers tell you, dedication, training and unrelenting focus on your target will get you where you want to see yourself.
It cannot be overstated how good your editing is, the last game between aMSa and Mango had me on the edge of my seat.
It's the kinda thing you can't replicate in fictional storytelling since it's almost always gonna end in the main character getting a triumph. But in real life, anything can happen

This was incredible to watch. Thank you for taking the time to put all of this together. As a more casual smash bros player I never really followed the pro scene that much so I didn't even know who aMSa was before this video. But I was captivated through the entire thing. Well done.
The editing is on another level, wow. Big kudos on that and the pacing as well. I rewinded a few times just to fully appreciate some of it.
I think Yoshi is the perfect example of when a character's skill ceiling is so high compared to the competition that even the most experienced players in the world take decades to realize it. Yoshi's tech that makes them good at all is unbelievably precise and all their other characteristics are a far departure from the other stats and abilities to the point where you basically have to build your muscle memory from the ground up; not viable for learning multiple characters, really. Even so aMSa managed to reach that skill ceiling, which allows you to basically permanently chain combos in a fashion unlike any other character.
The fact that aMSa spent a majority of his smash career getting only a third of the playtime other players got in, getting minimal sleep for his efforts, while STILL maintaining his grades and job? I'm surprised that Hungrybox was the one that got picked out as the 'never will there ever' person from EmpLemon's video, as aMSa's career path is infinitely more complex and enamoring.
Tbf didn't EmpLemon video on Hungrybox came out way way before aMSa first major win?
I think at that point he only had mewtwoking beat and 1-2 Gods a couple of times.
aMSa was probably such an underdog that even Emp overlooked him, because Hungrybox and Jigglypuff as a whole started from better place then Yoshi, also Hungrybox story is just a bit more dramatic so to say, so there's that

Well, ignore all the other points; what only matters is that his Never Ever video on Hungrybox came out 3 years ago, while Big House 10 was held a little less than a year ago. The tournie that marked him as something comparable to the five gods would only happen 3 years after this video was POSTED. Realistically, the editing for such a long video like this could have started 4 years ago. So him promoting aMSa wouldn't really have even been possible with the information at the time. Really goes to show how meteoric his rise really is, when you compare him to the five gods.

It's always funny when people talk about EmpLemon's video and criticize it. It was a product of it's time, and almost 4 years old now. A pre-covid time. Back when HBox was the top player, and had been the top player for 3 years, with a completely dominant streak of wins to back it up. Mango just had the worst year of his career in 2018, a year before the video came out. He went from winning an average of 5 tournaments a year, to only making it to finals twice, with mixed results in 2019. At the time, aMSa hadn't even finished top 3 against US players, and as this video notes, he hadn't traveled much to non-Japanese tournaments back then. No one knew if aMSa would make it or crash. Plus, there was a lot less content on aMSa back then, so it wouldn't have been as interesting of a video. Half of Emp's video is about HBox's personal struggles, which aMSa doesn't seem to have.
Emp's video notes that the tides were turning. That newer players were finally reaching the strength of the five gods. It's almost prophetic how true it was. Back in January of 2020, the only non-gods to win a major were Leffen, who everyone knew was good, and Plup, who had just proven himself in 2018 and 2019. But now, not just aMSa, but other players like Zain, Jmook, and Cody are top players. The current 2023 Summer SSBMRank has exactly zero of the gods in the top 5 players. It's safe to say that the era where the five gods dominated melee is over. Emp's video talked about it as if the five gods were still around, but I think it's safe to say that a lot has changed in almost 4 years since it released.
the hug from mango afterwards is the cherry on top of his win for me, even his opponent is like "yeah you earned this"

I like that both player focused documentaries show a different section of the leaderboard. The hbox one really only showed the highest of high eshalons of players. While the amsa documentary shows a lot more.of the top 100 as a whole

It's the brutal hit that comes when it starts mattering. When he was just doing it on the side, it was all for fun. He was taking Yoshi to the top tiers, that was already good enough. But when it becomes your full-time occupation, when the primary focus of your life is getting Yoshi to that top finish, and you just can't do it? That hurts.
