"Donkey Kong isn't here to punish us, or save us, but to help us weather the storm." Love this quote. Melee will forever be a game built from the foundation of the grassroot scene and the love of the game. So in our time of need, when everything is seemingly crumbling down around us, DK is there to remind us where we came from and the genuine love we have for a game more then 20 years old.
Akir made a great point when he called out people blaming DK only succeeding because of unfamiliarity or cheese. It's just a cop out to protect ego at the end of the day. DK isn't some new patched in character. He's been in the game for 20 years. The truth is when you lose to a DK it's because you aren't taking it serious enough to prepare for it or you're doing things against DK that's leaving you too vulnerable and you need to break those habits. That's why Leffen went from laughing on stream at the idea of losing to DK to being 0-2 versus Ringler and having to switch to Sheik and still only won by the skin of his teeth. Regardless of a character's tier, you better be ready for them because a good enough player with them is going to humble you fast.
He actually laughed on stream after to be fair! Good points being made though. It's a two player game at the end of the day, even if your character is really good at making it into a one player game sometimes.
Its a pretty valid point tho, a dk player with 10000hours has 1000s of hours in the fox/falco/marth/shiek matchups but a top tier main with 10000 hours has like maximum 100 hours in the DK matchup. Mid/low tier one tricks have that massive advantage on their side. Just look at the Bobby match, he legit thought its a true chain grab.

It's insane how good this video is. Never thought I'd see a high-quality, non-shitpost 'Donkey Kong in Melee' documentary but here we are, and I couldn't be happier
This video was really good and It want me to share my history as, for the moment, the best spanish dk ñ, ranked 7th in Spain (which isnt actually too good, we are not very talented xD). So i entered the comunity, i think It was on 2006, with 8 years, and quickly go first Falcon main, then marth main. On 2015 i was like 5th on my subregion at the time, Barcelona, and like 20 on Spain aprox with marth. And then i had to play k12, a samus player. My brother played samus all time so i had the mu experienced freshed and i actually did really good against very good samuses. But he didnt pick samus, he picked DONKEY KONG. He had changed mains for some mu, and marth was one of them. He destoyed me in a very fun way, and i was impresed. So i tried to pull dk as a joke too, It was funny and quirky, but i still mained marth. But slowly, as more time passed and i started to play more dk, my dk was caching my marth and i was starting to go dk against sheik, and It was working somehow. On 2018 i actually went full dk and changed my tag, from iu2king to iudking, making the DK joke instead of the mew2king joke. I actually labbed dk, at first i thaught i could get 2nd in Spain and that the character was good enough to maybe get some wins against low profile top 100. On pandemic i actually played a lot, i moved regions and in this region where i'm now, valencia, we are pretty actives, so i started labbing a lot. Rn i'm the best in valencia, kinda at the same level as the 2nd here, and i'm 7th in spain, and i want to get better. Now, seeing all that happened recently and having more general knowledge, i feel that the only mu that might be imposible for dk on top level might be a really good puff, like hbox, so i think solo dk is actually a character that, in the right hands, could win a Major. I'm really optimistic, not only on myself, but on the character, i have no doubts on it
The sad thing is that melee for me, at least rn, is a hobby and i have a full time job that just makes me unable to travel for Europe as much as i want actually. I'm going to fete anyway, i Will have my free days for that specific month, so i'm very excited. I'm planning too on going on a tournament on fall, but idk if theres some fall tours announced in europe
Dude I clicked on this and didn't realize until ten minutes in the actual length of the video and it absolutely blew me away the entire way through. Easiest sub of my life, great video man! Excited to see what you do in the future.
Twotran is another good DK that comes to mind who inspired Rishi to play the character iirc Not sure about their recent tournament attendance or plans to enter any upcoming events though
When I spoke to Ringler, I think I was told that Twotran is a DK who could feasibly top 64 a major to this day. (Could have some DKs mixed up though!) If I had more time to spend on this project would have probably sought out an interview with him.
I wish I could like this a million times. Great video so well put together. I just recently found my love for DK last week and have become a 20DK believer officially after watching this vid. The ape can do it and we will get home to the top one day.
People that complain about "low tiers" that play top tier have easily been the most annoying part of my melee journey of 21 years. Let's all explore this seemingly invincible game together and see how much juice we can squeeze out of it haha great video man I was delightfully surprised
This is probably one of the most well written, researched, and edited documentaries i've seen on youtube! It's also on the best monke around what more could I ask for
I usually don’t watch full smash documentaries but I’m a sucker for low/mid tier content and the general obscurity of tier lists this era. I can also recognize this video took a lot of work and editing, thanks!
am 30 minutes into this video and i only now am realizing i’m watching a movie. very good pacing thus far and super well put together information. this all coming from a not-so knowledgeable melee-interested non-player
Dang this video was amazingly made! My favourite part was that donkey kong face materialising on the moon. You have real skill for pacing a lengthy video as well- didn't want to look away for a second
I feel like the Donkey Kong players are a part of a evil clergy unlike the AMSA Yoshi who won through honor, dedication and hard work. Donkey Kong feels sinister.
Some of the best content on TH-cam straight up. It’s so interesting how creators will find their niche and create videos like this that deserve immense amounts of attention but can’t get it because of the relatively small community around the subject matter. I hope this hits the algorithm HARD
Also thats kinda awesome how the name “bum” wasnt uttered once in the vid. He was deff a very strong player early on but never traveled and eventually disappeared entirely
It genuinely excites me to see changes in Melee even after all this time. And other than Falcon, DK is the only character from Melee that I would consider a main in the other Smash games, so it kind of makes me want to finally pick up Melee and give this character a shot and see if the game finally clicks with me.
This documentary was so good and awesome that when I see DK doing so well in Collision I couldn't stop thinking in this video. Incredible job, I Love it.
I think this is the greatest part of melee that I don’t see as much in other competitive video games. The heart. Melee has always been grassroots and linked community and to see such as optimized and oppressive game becoming so diverse and meta changing after 20 years because people refused to give up on their favorite characters. It’s just such an optimistic and hopeful reality. I think that’s why DK is so special as he represents the heart of melee, and like melee he’ll be there for us to weather this storm.
Really good video. Wasn't expecting such quality, it's almost a crime the number of subscribers for a video like this. And love the editing with DK in his original series.
I was looking at the community tierlist and I was surprised by somethings. Now I haven't gone to any tournaments, but me and my brother play all the time and are quite good. For example take Donkey Kong: His neutral B, we call it "The Punch"...

I've heard a good amount about Spanish DKs! Thanks for sharing.
Are you the guy that challenged me to a dk v samus money match with you only using one hand?
@@abigcupofwater nop, thats k12
@@iudking3589 ahhh yes, that sounds familiar
Dude I clicked on this and didn't realize until ten minutes in the actual length of the video and it absolutely blew me away the entire way through. Easiest sub of my life, great video man! Excited to see what you do in the future.
I only occasionally check in on the melee community and saw DKs in top 64. I had mamy questions and you've answered them beautifully.
This is some of the best melee content that’s been made in a while. Very well done
Twotran is another good DK that comes to mind who inspired Rishi to play the character iirc
Not sure about their recent tournament attendance or plans to enter any upcoming events though
When I spoke to Ringler, I think I was told that Twotran is a DK who could feasibly top 64 a major to this day. (Could have some DKs mixed up though!) If I had more time to spend on this project would have probably sought out an interview with him.
Who’s here after Junebug getting top 3 at Supernova
You really out dun yourself on this one! An hour and a half of QUALITY kongtent!
junebug got 3rd at smashcon only losing the 2nd and 1st place.
I wish I could like this a million times. Great video so well put together. I just recently found my love for DK last week and have become a 20DK believer officially after watching this vid. The ape can do it and we will get home to the top one day.
I thought I clicked on a 1min 27 second video but.. I sat here for over an hour. Well done. Seriously. Documentary level. Subbed.
People that complain about "low tiers" that play top tier have easily been the most annoying part of my melee journey of 21 years. Let's all explore this seemingly invincible game together and see how much juice we can squeeze out of it haha great video man I was delightfully surprised
Don't care play an actual character and not hope you can get the 3 mus you can actually win because you can only up air fastfallers x5
@@horizon1132 live and let live buddy. No need to complain with a silver spoon in your mouth
This is probably one of the most well written, researched, and edited documentaries i've seen on youtube! It's also on the best monke around what more could I ask for
I didnt know DK was actually real. I've been jokingly picking him each time I get frustrated and was getting results. Guess this is my life now.
wait dk is real? holy dshit
I usually don’t watch full smash documentaries but I’m a sucker for low/mid tier content and the general obscurity of tier lists this era. I can also recognize this video took a lot of work and editing, thanks!
I honestly clicked this assuming I wouldn't finish it but this has been so well made that I watched it all.
Same here!
Bro, your choice of music around 56:54 from the original game (DKC) is absolutely perfect. Thanks for the nostalgia. You've earned my subscription.
am 30 minutes into this video and i only now am realizing i’m watching a movie. very good pacing thus far and super well put together information. this all coming from a not-so knowledgeable melee-interested non-player
They're just playing a video game.
Such quality from a smaller creator, I’m very happy I’ve found another creator to binge.
There's just an inherit sense of satisfaction in my brain whenever this giant ass monke is on screen :)
Thank you for the great video!
The other reason dk is like captain falcon is no matter how lame the combo he does is it looks really cool
@@wusstunes monkey combos up air > up air > up air > up air > up air and somehow its the most entertaining shit ive ever seen.
Love the quake sound at 23:01
A goblin told me to put it there
@@wusstunes real I was the goblin
Donkey Kong is a hammer.
I love the chaotic editing of this video, you should be proud of making such a good video.
Honestly the best documentary I've seen since 2020
Some of the best content on TH-cam straight up.
There is a very good minidoc on bum already out there. I thought about talking about him in this video but ultimately didn't find a spot for it.
"My Mewtwo infamously has some lore in Southern Virginia" 50:05
It genuinely excites me to see changes in Melee even after all this time. And other than Falcon, DK is the only character from Melee that I would consider a main in the other Smash games, so it kind of makes me want to finally pick up Melee and give this character a shot and see if the game finally clicks with me.
Honestly the best vid this community has seen since the melee doc. Well done
This documentary was so good and awesome that when I see DK doing so well in Collision I couldn't stop thinking in this video. Incredible job, I Love it.
1:22:39 ... im sorry what the actual hell! I literally cannot escape his gaze, wherever i go, i see his face
Dk win patchwork 2024 🐒
this is great. really deep dive and the editing was funny too
My DK inspiration all started with Captain Jack. I definitely miss the old days of the scene!
Dude, please keep making more of these. You deserve all the views you're getting.
I think that’s why DK is so special as he represents the heart of melee, and like melee he’ll be there for us to weather this storm.
to see donkey kong scare off the same Fox that scared off Armada's Peach, is a beautiful thing... 20DK is real
A masterpiece of Melee filmmaking.
Really good video. Wasn't expecting such quality, it's almost a crime the number of subscribers for a video like this. And love the editing with DK in his original series.
CEO wasn't a major because there was a samus in top 8 in a 2022 tournament. please argue with me on this
Please give me this win
I beg you LOL
Those zooms in the junebug juicebox match played with my emotions so hard.
update update: a donkey kong just beat the best player in the world... what world are we living in...
Zain has been the best in the world for like 6 months now, he's won a lot more just the official list hasnt been updated yet
Put this on to try to take a nap but couldn’t take my eyes off the screen, great vid!
Very impressive video thought I would only watch for a few but ended up watching the whole thing.
Ringler: “I see man. *I attack man* .”
I was looking at the community tierlist and I was surprised by somethings.
Now I haven't gone to any tournaments, but me and my brother play all the time and are quite good.
For example take Donkey Kong: His neutral B, we call it "The Punch"...
