he definitely has his own story to tell. he grew up in a small village an practised against CPUs and still became the number one
Armada was a huge force in the scene. He basically won everything easily. The thing was, no one even came close for a long time. Players like Hungrybox, Mang0, Leffen, or whoever would rarely have close matches. Armada just seemed like there was no chance to beat him. He was dumpstering really really good players like they just picked up the game. I would say he was absolutely the most dominate Melee player of all time. Even other players he mentions in this video would get smacked by him with no effort. Unfortunately, he just lost the love of competing.
Imagine having to face "The fifth god" and then you finally meet him and he's named Dr. PeePee.

It’s insane but I think the same thing affects a lot of top players, which makes it nice for mid level players like me who still have to have a job and/or go to school. The Smash scene really is mostly college aged students, and with no large sponsors (and thus not enough money to live off of), most players on all levels have other things going on in their life. While it would be interesting to see how much further the meta would be if high and top level players could have more time to practice, at least (as a silver lining) it levels the playing field time wise.
The “Never Ever” series is the best running series to ever exist on this channel. Idk if this is a hot take or not but I have watched all the Never Evers multiple times and I’m hyped for this new entry.

The range of emotion that Hbox went through when losing the match at 1:19:38 is so touching. He went from offering congratulatory fist bump after his loss, to a feeling of discouragement after his opponent leaves him hanging to start celebrating, to overcoming that feeling and maintaining good sportsmanship by continuing to extend the congratulating fist bump, to melting away into humility and appreciation when his opponent goes in for the real thing and gives him a hug. Beautiful.
He turns the lost as a sign of learning and showing sportsmanship because really he was just like them before. The new guys that try to make it to the top

@illv3 not going to be the most in-depth reply, but Leffen has been an extremely egotistical and rude person in several gaming communities (particularly melee) for years, which is shown to some extent in this video. That with a mix of being unsportsmanlike and not accepting losses (ex: after hbox beat him at Ludwigs tournament a year or so ago, he had a huge rant about how melee needs an air time limit? Weird ass take, and was specifically anti-jiggly), a lot of the gaming community hasn't really liked having him around at some point or another. It's super hard to say specifics because he goes off on rants, or does generally toxic stuff fairly often, but the rant mentioned above is the biggest recent one I can think of.
That said, he's wicked good at fighting games, and has reconciled with some people after his worst era getting him banned from smash for a little while (talked about a little in the video). Though he's toned it down, many still find him insufferable. Hope that wasn't too much, and after I said I'd try to keep it short

The fact that he claimed a false victim testimony during 2020's Me Too movement is atrocious. The fact that he conspired against fellow content creators in an attempt to get them canceled during said movement for financial and political profit is diabolical. The fact that he used his influence to vilify competitors, some to the brink of suicide, is despicable. I don't like to refer to anyone as an "evil person," but Leffen has consistently done evil things to people in this community and, as far as I can tell, still feels no remorse for such actions. The fact that people still respect him is astonishing to me, and, frankly, is as strong of an indictment against the community as Leffen has against himself.

He literally initiated witch hunts and stalked people that he slightly disagreed with, to systematically isolate them from their friend groups.
There's a massive zip file of just evidence against this monster and what he did across multiple years that was finally released and that motherfucker actually went "Nah none of this is real. I'm the real victim and I totally changed as a person."
At the time of release, his actions detailed in that file were multiple years old to be fair, and you would be forgiven for thinking "oh, it's cancel culture digging up century old evidence to get dirt on someone they don't like and has changed as a person over those years", but the thing is that he didn't change in the slightest.
He's always been a POS and always will be, but it's totally fine and excusable because he's crazy good at Fox. (yes, the logic is as ridiculous as you think, but it's real) He's literally so toxic and horrible, _every other fighting game community_ told him to f*ck off and never return. It's quite the achievement to get chased off by literally everyone for your behavior.

Blake N People who can perform at this level in any field are incredible. They are making art. You have some odd definitions of incredible too. People who lead governments are more often corrupt bureaucrats than noble sages (I mean, just look at the US), and great inventions are just as often the result of serendipity as They are some major theoretical breakthrough. Penicillin, for instance, was discovered by accident. What hungrybox or any of the other players mentioned in this video have done is a deliberate and noble display of dedication and skill to a game that a large subculture does deem valuable. I'd find myself pulling up some game I played thinking I'm going to crush it since I'm older, but it doesn't turn out much easier, not in a mechanical standpoint (maybe I'll learn not to save items or I'll be more open to different playstyles, but I peaked there too recently, I think)

I had my share of cringy preeteen gamer names, but imagine sticking to one, becoming a master of the game, rising through the ranks and having to tell your grandchildren, "I was Dr. PeePee, and I was called a god of Melee." That's true dedication.

@@moo9557 Mango is definitely very cocky and arrogant but he's still a good guy. He was just especially so in 2013 during that AMA. He's humbled up a lot since then. Not who I would consider "nice" but he still means well. He meant well back then, too, but his arrogance overpowered everything else. He should have given Hbox more credit in that AMA and he learned his lesson from the backlash along with having a moderated conversation with Hbox soon after.
@@moo9557 while mango is definitely a showboater, he's definitely changed. If you watch some of his recent streams, he's in touch with the community, and while he sometimes is arrogant, he seems a lot more set on becoming a better player, having good relationships with fellow pros, and just promoting melee as a whole. Part of this has to be fueled with his epic war with zain, as they are the top 2 players in the world rn and are just getting better.

Always respected him as a player, but you're right he represents something less tangible but no less valuable about Melee; it's unlikely position as a top competitor. Been on a Hungrybox history train through TH-cam for a few hours, and you know what boggles the mind ? How when faced with a story with people being hateful, unaccepting and destructive, where there's a pretty clear lesson to be extracted about tolerance and not being toxic, people feel compelled to go in the comments and mock awkward teenagers for their lack of hygiene/upvote that en masse. Because it's so funny, right ?

I kept getting recommended this video, and i literally had almost zero interest in watching it based on the title and thumb. After getting bombarded day after day in the recommendeds and on the home page, I finally chose to click on Jigglypuff's goofy face. This brought me into a world in which I never held any interest- competitive gaming, and a character study of players in that world I knew nothing about. However, I was immediately immersed and engaged in the story. The way you've told his story, the structure, the intelligence... it was heartwarming. I can tell you have a true passion for the realm, an insane attention to detail, an artistic mind for storytelling, and a soft spot for the underdog. I slacked off at work for the entirety of this over-an-hour-long youtube epic, and gained a respect for a man who's career in a way represents so many of us. This is amazing.

As an outsider to the Melee community, I've always looked up to HBox. A player who never conformed to the norm and just did his own thing, succeeding by being different. Teaching everyone that there's more than one way to look at something.

You want my Hungrybox story? When I went to a local in Florida a couple years ago, I asked him to take a picture with my friends and I, and he obliged for a moment. He got up and then sat back down, joking and saying "Wait you were serious? Oh man," well after we were about to leave. Regardless, I sat by him before he was about to play a game of Ultimate, and told him how much of an inspiration he was to me, that I rooted for him through thick and thin because I thought he was a kick ass dude.
No complaints. No bad things to say about him. Love that guy.
