I'd find myself pulling up some game I played thinking I'm going to crush it since I'm older, but it doesn't turn out much easier, not in a mechanical standpoint (maybe I'll learn not to save items or I'll be more open to different playstyles, but I peaked there too recently, I think)

With context, it's an entirely different picture. It's a man who's spent a decade becoming the best he can be, and being mocked and ridiculed when he finally got to the top. It's a statement of disbelief, not of entitlement.

he definitely has his own story to tell. he grew up in a small village an practised against CPUs and still became the number one
Armada was a huge force in the scene. He basically won everything easily. The thing was, no one even came close for a long time. Players like Hungrybox, Mang0, Leffen, or whoever would rarely have close matches. Armada just seemed like there was no chance to beat him. He was dumpstering really really good players like they just picked up the game. I would say he was absolutely the most dominate Melee player of all time. Even other players he mentions in this video would get smacked by him with no effort. Unfortunately, he just lost the love of competing.

Many considered HungryBox as the villain, but they never considered the tyrant that was right under their noses, Leffen. He became the villain he should be.

@illv3 not going to be the most in-depth reply, but Leffen has been an extremely egotistical and rude person in several gaming communities (particularly melee) for years, which is shown to some extent in this video. That with a mix of being unsportsmanlike and not accepting losses (ex: after hbox beat him at Ludwigs tournament a year or so ago, he had a huge rant about how melee needs an air time limit? Weird ass take, and was specifically anti-jiggly), a lot of the gaming community hasn't really liked having him around at some point or another. It's super hard to say specifics because he goes off on rants, or does generally toxic stuff fairly often, but the rant mentioned above is the biggest recent one I can think of.
That said, he's wicked good at fighting games, and has reconciled with some people after his worst era getting him banned from smash for a little while (talked about a little in the video). Though he's toned it down, many still find him insufferable. Hope that wasn't too much, and after I said I'd try to keep it short
@illv3 @cadhla2989 As far as I'm concerned, being rude and unsportsmanlike, while noteworthy, is not the most egregious of Leffen's crimes. The fact that he claimed a false victim testimony during 2020's Me Too movement is atrocious. The fact that he conspired against fellow content creators in an attempt to get them canceled during said movement for financial and political profit is diabolical. The fact that he used his influence to vilify competitors, some to the brink of suicide, is despicable. I don't like to refer to anyone as an "evil person," but Leffen has consistently done evil things to people in this community and, as far as I can tell, still feels no remorse for such actions. The fact that people still respect him is astonishing to me, and, frankly, is as strong of an indictment against the community as Leffen has against himself.
This man carried an entire generation WHILE IT WAS TRYING TO DESTROY HIM.

EVO 2016 is probably one of the greatest tournaments I ever got to watch live. The culmination of so many sets and stories followed by… THAT grand finals. Insane

Even the people who like turndownforwalt don't watch his videos all the way through, his viewer retention just drops off instantly at the start, compare that to this video. The difference is night and day.

@@moo9557 Mango is definitely very cocky and arrogant but he's still a good guy. He was just especially so in 2013 during that AMA. He's humbled up a lot since then. Not who I would consider "nice" but he still means well. He meant well back then, too, but his arrogance overpowered everything else. He should have given Hbox more credit in that AMA and he learned his lesson from the backlash along with having a moderated conversation with Hbox soon after.

If you watch some of his recent streams, he's in touch with the community, and while he sometimes is arrogant, he seems a lot more set on becoming a better player, having good relationships with fellow pros, and just promoting melee as a whole. Part of this has to be fueled with his epic war with zain, as they are the top 2 players in the world rn and are just getting better.

Its 2024, about to be April. 2024 collision concluded 4 days ago. During the whole of top 8, the biggest cheers i could hear were for Hbox. I think, finally, the community can appreciate just how good of a player this man is. He really has done so much for the community, a stronghold for the smash community and one of the only reasons we have a community after the 2020 summer. This man is so selfless and goated.
