Fully agree. Said it’s a rollercoaster and then goes on to like almost everything announced. It’s like IGN reviewing and praising a game and then calling it a 6. “Not enough” for a state of play? New Sucker punch game and all the others. This isn’t a conference, it’s a Nintendo direct level show. Still love Matty no hate, just seemed really odd and unnecessarily negative? Idk. Didn’t sit right for sure.
2025 is absolutely stacked for video games so far. GTA 6, DOOM, Monster Hunter, Yotei, Civ 7, Avowed, Borderlands 4, Death Stranding 2, Fable, not to mention the Switch 2 and any games Nintendo’s got cooking for that
I respect your optism, however I think it's naive to assume we'll have a great year. The next great year will be the year of gta 6 and that's just facts
And yet people are like yeah this state of play was meh. Like wtf do people expect? Every first party to show a game and silk song on top of it? This state of play was great imo
Agreed. So far for 2025, I am looking forward to: • Fable • South of Midnight • Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra • Crimsin Desert • Grand Theft Auto 6 • The First Bezerker: Khazan • Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
to be fair, 'i'd play these' doesn't mean the state of play was fucking amazing. means it wasn't entirely shit. ups and downs, like he said. 'these seem cool', and 'honestly, the shit they're doing with horizon makes me even more cynical as a gamer' can even things out. not to mention, meh, doesn't mean bad or terrible.
Saying you'd play half those games doesn't mean this couldn't have been a press release and a tweet with Ghost of Yotei trailer and have the same impact.
I do like these old games getting remakes but we’re in the same boat where this generation needs more new exclusive games. Glad to see Ghost has something new cooking, Hell is Us looks great. First game looks fun, that’s all that really got my attention though that was new.
To each their own. For me, the stand outs are: - Lunar 1&2 Remaster - Fantasian coming to anywhere but Apple play - Legacy of Kain Remaster - Dynasty Warriors Origins - Ghost of Yotei Honorable mention of Astro bot having new and free DLC so soon.
Video games have never been better in terms of the raw quality of games coming out, and that is objectively true. There are way more innovative and genre-defining titles coming out every year, from indie to AAA. The problem is with the players themselves and what the mainstream decides to consume, which are mostly homogonous and dumbed down products made by a handful of publishers (think Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard, Ea, etc.). When you look at the larger scope of devs and publishers, the games industry is literally way better than any other storytelling medium (especially when compared to the state of the cinema industry).

Didn’t working designs make the best packages ever I miss those days.
I'm really hoping that we get a re-release or remaster of Alundra in the near future. I honestly think that they could of made a great series with that ip. Working Designs did the localization for Alundra.
I'm confused. They do these multiple times a year and do game centric states of play too. I don't understand why every reveal has to be exciting. May not be my thing, but someone else may be excited. These online presentations happen so much now, I'm surprised they have anything to show at them.
If you think this state of play was mid or bad your exectations for these state of play events are waaaay too high. This is head and shoulders above any state of play weve had for ages. Stuff like ghost 2 is typically revealed at full showcases. This one was well well above average for a state of play.

It seem like a-lot of gamers are to cynical now. I loved this, I’m perfectly content that a lot of these games aren’t my thing, they look good though and I know others should enjoy it. Also I totally disagree with Matt about the dragon age part of the video. I felt the opposite! I was pumped!
i completely disagree with the remaster of horizon. PS is literally known for the quality of their mo cap. Plus performance and graphic enhancement. All remasters were a couple generations ago were upscalers. The main purpose is for people who never played it to have the best version and for those who already own it, it’s $10 bucks.
Okay I'll play Devil's Advocate here. Ghost Of Yotei, Fear the Spotlight and Hell is Us Look fucking stellar. The Horizon remaster is so dumb beyond belief but for the state of Play to give me 3 games to check out? I'm cool with that. Honestly all the recent VR announcements have also made me consider getting a new headset. I don't know guys. Was it a 10/10 showcase? No. was it bad? naw. Also Monster Hunter getting a Feb release date? HELL YEAH!
Theyre at least doing some work on the horizon remaster and bringing it up to Forbidden West’s fidelity. Still pointless but ill probably bite for just a $10 upgrade
Oh, man. You're gonna inhale those Lunar games. They are absolutely wonderful. I've been buying copies and different versions of those games since Sega CD. Still classic and just as playable today.
I missed out on the entire PS1 era and a good amount of the PS2 era. I’ve been playing catch up, this will make it easier so I can play Lunar. Before it was a game I accepted I wouldn’t get to experience since the games are so much $.
"Meh"? New Ghost and Lunar and Soul Reaver remasters. That ruled!!!! Retro games are having their moment right now. AAA games have been shitting the bed.
Honestly, and I mean this with all due respect: there was nothing(!) wrong with this State of Play. New and upcoming games, updates on hardware and PS+, retro stuff and a megaton announcement at the end - all paced very well. That was a fantastic update, hands down. A „meh“ comes from an incredibly spoiled and entitled position, sorry Matty, that‘s not cool.
Inundated with remasters, DLC and re-releases, "updates on hardware" = some plates and a fortnite controller?, PS+ announcements that are typically relegated to twitter posts - hardly a "fantastic" update. It was scraps. GoY looked great, but that event was dismal. If Nintendo or Xbox put on that same showcase it'd rightly be getting torn to shreds

@@BenHDR I think you missed the point. If you think my post was fanboyish or that I'm defending Sony, you're wrong. Yes, I'm on Sony, but I'm highly critical. My post is meant to respond to the question "if it were on Xbox, it would be criticized", but in truth, Sony, even though they're very bad (I even considered this one average due to the Ghost announcement), has at least done their state of play. Nowadays, most of the comments are negative criticism just because they're from the opposite platform. Xbox YT channels only make videos about Sony when things go wrong (this one in particular is too much) and channels of content creators linked to Sony do the same. I don't make comments to troll anyone! The Xbox is far below what is expected, I think that no player with common sense believes that the Xbox at this moment is competing with Sony as it has done for years and this is a problem for all of us because it makes the other party (Sony in this case) also not feel the pressure to do more and better.
I'm still going to hold on to my original PS4 copy of HZD. It still looks and plays just fine on my PS4 Pro. These remasters aren't even worth it unless you're talking about games that were made during the PS3 era.
What exactly were people expecting? The new ghost game alone makes this a good state of play. These things aren’t big time presentations. Most of the games were actually pretty decent.
I love Matty, just feel like he missed the mark here. Not that we can’t disagree, but his words throughout the first 16 mins are a lot more positive sounding to me than “meh.” Maybe as constructive feedback for someone who I feel is a top tier commentator on games from a schlub on the internet.
About Horizon's popularity I think it's much bigger in the "real world" than online, on internet you would think the game is garbage and universally hated but both games have sold extremely well (the first was on the 20+ million ball park without counting the people that got it for free).
Hit the nail on the head with "real world". Most of the hate for all these things always seem to be found online. The general gaming public is way less vitriolic and negative.
Well Horizon has mecha dinos and the basic gameplay/combat was pretty good. Story/writing/dialogue etc was pretty bad tho. If they had put a lot of effort into quality storytelling I think it would have been one of the best games of the decade because the premise etc is pretty great.
@@Deadspace123100 This is complete bs. Back when Mass Effect 3 was released I remember both in uni and at my job people were talking about its terrible ending. If there's some big controversy or something, people talk about it. Claiming ''hate or critique is only online'' isnt true. If anything, the ''toxic posivity/astroturfing'' for certain games is a lot more present on the internet, because of places like reddit, gaf/resetera, game journalism (and some companies like Sony, SE) etc, having a lot of power over the narrative framework that these topics are discussed within. Just ask anyone that played FFXIV and was active on their official forums. You could barely criticise the game and there were people active who would try to ragebait anyone that criticised so they had an excuse to report and ban you.
@Tiasung I never said critique is only online. My point was that when you're talking to somebody that's not hidden behind a screen, people's responses to these types of thing aren't so angry and hateful. It's perfectly fine to criticize something you don't like.

@barofsoap6048 Rise is great for learning the modern mechanics that World introduced if you don't want to jump in the deep end with World/Icebourne. If you want old school, pre-World MH then I recommend Generations. Both are great games, but offer very different gameplay types.
Are you joking? That state of play was pretty good. Ghost of Yotei will probably be GotY 2025. The only thing that looked good in Xbox’s last show was Indy. Here we had Ghost, Lunar and Legacy of Kain, along with some smaller things and that amazing looking Alan Wake dlc. This is not ‘meh’ by any stretch of the imagination.
Idk a $10 upgrade price for refreshing the graphics and some animations for horizon doesn't bother me on its own. Just that it's following an unnecessary remaster streak from PlayStation!
When the hell is anyone gonna learn the difference between State of Play and Showcase. The fact we got any AAA games shown is a big plus. They are always lean, Maybe next time people will remember but I doubt it. Now if a Showcase is planned, then be hyped.
Did you watch the video? He wasn't mad at the releases. He was just expressing his disapproval of lumping a few titles into a "state of play." For example, a state of play should be 15 titles with at least three AAA titles. Imagine E3 just featured a few games. The quantity is not enough to justify a "gaming showcase" style video when they could just release these titles in singular videos.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one :) we got 2 remasters announced for long desired titles in the Lunar and Legacy of Kain collections. So that is at minimum good. Ghost of Yotei will be great just because it's a Sucker Punch game. Even their 2 worst games (InFamous 2 and InFamous Second Son) are both greater than the majority of games out there. Plus Dynasty Warriors Origins will be fun as will Monster Hunter Wilds. Now I will say I am excited for the next showcase when that happens!
the remedyverse is definitely worth the journey. I went back and played Quantumbreak after Alan Wake 2 because it was the only recent part of the equation I was missing and I wanted to have all the pieces.
If this was an Xbox event you'd call it trash for not having enough first party games or exclusives, imagine if Xbox announced Gears of War 5 Remastered as well
Excited about Ghost and Lunar. Lunar at the time was a very limited market game possibly exclusive to SegaCD. Not many got to play it but it has the legendary status for the cutscenes, real music and voice acting when most mainstream systems still used Cartridges
I'm not terribly upset by the trend of remasters, from my understanding a lot of these remaster projects are being worked on by new staff at the develpment studios. Naughty Dog and Guerilla are high profile development studios, so it would make sense to train as much of their new staff on relatively safe projects to bring them up to speed, especially in this and upcoming generations of games where the production scales of games made by these studios are massive. If this is true I think this is a really smart move to future proof developers skillsets on hardware and software that continues to get better and more advanced.
Hmm, the head of Guerrila becomes CEO of Playstation and SUDDENLY Horizon is pushed hard. The ideas for Horizon are cool but the execution is so bland.
Totally agree. I didn’t play the second but I played the first and it was fun for a couple hours but got so boring. Really reminded me of a a Ubisoft game.
The second one had fun gameplay but the story was lame and the dialogue dragged on and on. I ended up skipping the cutscenes because eventually I stopped caring about the story

@@TheHeartThatRunsColdit looked much better than most games in this showcase. I mean just look at that game with Witcher ripoff trailer somewhere at the beginning. How can people honestly enjoy that and then continue to say that Veilguard looks underwhelming. So far when it comes to gameplay, most of the Dragon Age games look like junk food titles. Doesn’t mean they are. This combat looks way more enjoyable than the previous two games. Even the first game had “meh” gameplay imo. The story, the setting and the choices you make is where dragon age shines. At this point I feel like people are nitpicking for the sake of it. They can offer 99 good things and yet people will focus on that 1 specific and often inconsequential thing that looks kinda “meh”. Every game can look bad if you want it to be bad. Granted, BioWare didn’t do themselves any favors with the last 2 games and the Veilguards first trailer. But the perfect game simply doesn’t exist. I don’t like the look of the Qunari’s but if the rest is good, It won’t stop me from having a good time. Wish people were less cynical, it’s not a useful character trait at all.
@jeroen3618 No, being cynical when it comes to what you're spending $60 and your time on is a good trait. The reason why people are whelmed by what they've seen is because it's mostly been flash with little substance. With the only people giving it praise being those who have been flown out to play it. I'm sorry I'm cynical when the U.I is more busy than the light show of effects players need multiple visual indicators to navigate through. With regards to action games, they've done so much, which is distracting from the action. Things that wouldn't need to be there if visual feedback was good enough on its own, but it won't be, and for an action game that's problematic. And no one has any reason to be hopeful about the story because this is modern-day Bioware.
@@TheHeartThatRunsCold a lot of the people who have been flown out to play it are known for being honest and critical. Luke Stephens and Skillup for example. Both were suddenly very excited after having played it, despite going in with extreme caution and low expectations. They were convinced not by empty promises, overhyped marketing or shameless bribes, but by what they played. The moment they shared those positive thoughts though, people suddenly considered them sellouts. Yet people like Asmongold, someone who only reacts to rumors and specific details in the most negative way to capitalize on the negativity without actually having played it, is considered to be a trustworthy source by those same people. That’s straight up cynicism, something which has been surrounding this game from the moment it has been announced. It’s fine to still hold back until full reviews are up to decide whether you are going to buy this game or not, but that’s not what most people are doing nowadays. I hated (still do) the UI from Inquisition. Despite that I loved the game. I despised the movement in the Witcher 3. Till this day it’s still my favorite game of all time. $60 is cheaper btw than every other current triple A titles. $70 is the norm these days, and that’s without all the dlc needed to complete the game. A lot of the UI is customizable from what I heard, so it might not even be that bad.
As a Psvr2 owner the show was a pleasant surprise for me. So hyped for Hitman vr I enjoyed it a lot back then on the Psvr1 even with it’s low resolution and bad controls with the Ps4 controller. Now it should play flawlessly on the new headset. Also excited for Metro VR.
Metro and Midnight Walk on VR seem great, and new Ghost for next year is peak. Though they are multiplats, Alan Wake 2 Control-themed DLC, Hell Is Us, and Archeage Chronicles all seem pretty solid. Good pacing besides giving MHW and Veilguard way more attention than they really need at this point. I don’t think it’s what Sony needed most from a third party perspective, but I wouldn’t really call it meh either.
Disappointed with even the Ghost sequel. Why my man Jin Sakai is not there wtf Sony What's up with Sony not being able to retain iconic characters they keep replacing them. Joel, Kratos, Peter, now Jin. I liked those OG games cuz of those characters and they keep replacing them can't say I'm a fan of that
Sucker Punch said they like doing origin stories and wanted to do a different character this time. Honestly I respect that. Not every sequel needs to feature the same protagonist as last time.
If you look at the trailer properly you'd see the timeliness Jin is LONGGGGGG dead by the events of these games. Likely a character inspired by the legends of the Ghost
I went into this state of play with low expectations and was pleasently suprised. Ghost of Yotei looks like the best game of the generation and The Midnight Walk and Hell is Us also looked really interesting 🤷

GTA 6, DOOM, Monster Hunter, Yotei, Civ 7, Avowed, Borderlands 4, Death Stranding 2, Fable, not to mention the Switch 2 and any games Nintendo’s got cooking for that
Doom the Dark Ages is what I’m looking forward to.
It will truly be a great year for gaming

And yet people are like yeah this state of play was meh. Like wtf do people expect? Every first party to show a game and silk song on top of it? This state of play was great imo
Agreed.
So far for 2025, I am looking forward to:

• South of Midnight
• Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra
• Crimsin Desert
• Grand Theft Auto 6
• The First Bezerker: Khazan
• Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

Crazy how Matty can say he wants to check out half the games shown and then call the SoP “meh”.

ups and downs, like he said.
I thought it was more than MID. But to each their own!
Agreed and I'm a PC gamer. This is a better SoP, imo.
I do like these old games getting remakes but we’re in the same boat where this generation needs more new exclusive games. Glad to see Ghost has something new cooking, Hell is Us looks great. First game looks fun, that’s all that really got my attention though that was new.

"Don't ask questions. Just consume product and get excited for next product." Best summation of the industry ever.
I see you watched the newest RLM video.

About Horizon's popularity I think it's much bigger in the "real world" than online, on internet you would think the game is garbage and universally hated but both games have sold extremely well (the first was on the 20+ million ball park without counting the people that got it for free).
it also doesn't hurt that herman hurst the head of playstaion. was on the team who created the game at guerrilla games

That was a pretty good showcase, imho. There were some pretty interesting games shown, and then Yotei! That was really all I needed to see. Soul Reaver will also be awesome. Seems like there will be plenty to play for the next 6 months.
I guess im the only one but i like the look of dragon age. I love the colors.
My main issue is the Quinari. They look like cartoon characters. Everyone else looks mostly fine
I love it too
Yeah it looks good ngl
'being aware of my expectations'
meanwhile almost everyone else thinking bethesda essentially going 'yall crazy' is them admitting defeat 'can't be the fault of our expectations'.
Worst were the chat comments, spamming shit like “woke” every second.
Those parrots really wanted crackers it seems
Ghost 2 for 2025 is all i care about. Having Kingdom Come 2, GTA6, Ghost and Mafia old country all in 2025 is the perfect gaming year for me. So while the overall state of play was shit i got what i wanted.
I'd say as long as something catches my attention, it's a great show, i'm excited for Ghost of Yotei, Lunar Collection and the Legacy of Kain Remaster
Yeah this is the first one in a while where I was interested in a couple games. I tried the 1st GoT game. Amazing game but I was really bored. Just not my type of rpg I guess. I had a lot of fun with Death Stranding. I'm hyped about Lunar bc I didn't get to play those forever ago.
Both companies struggling to justify this generation of consoles
''next gen'' is a scam
PlayStation, for the love of god give us a SHOWCASE 😭
That’s why I don’t watch State of Plays live anymore. Unless it’s branded as a PlayStation Showcase, I’ll just catch the clips later.
Excited for the Ghost of Yotei game. Just wanna be a katana wielding badass. Of course we will see how they separate her style without being just Ghost of Tsushima with the same abilities, move sets, and names but added more. Maybe there are more bow types, melee weapon types, and maybe being stealthy or direct changes the plot. Who knows!
Damn i thought the gameplay from Veilguard looked fine
That's the problem, it just looks "fine." It's going to be a junk food title. Which is fine.
Nah it's not about that gameplay itself but the whole game is disappointing to the bones
I hope the new dynasty warriors shed a spotlight that the franchise deserved, it's such a fun series you couldn't get in any other games.
Ghost Of Yotei was the only highlight
Lunar remaster and Soul Reaver remaster. That's actually huge.
Hell is Us looks cool
@@moneenerdive never even heard of those games and i would consider myself pretty in the loop gaming wise so i dont think many people care
Hi Matty, thanks for the vid! Happy gaming!
Ghost saved the day, before that it was bad. 2025 release date is great though, happy for fans of the series after such a long wait.
Ghost looked fine at best (nothing stood out as new or innovative) but I don’t see how it can save an otherwise terrible showing by Sony.
Like what did yall expect for a state of play? Some E3 kind of presentation? I thought they had at least 3 or 4 games that looked pretty good
It was a good sop 7.5/10
As a Psvr2 owner the show was a pleasant surprise for me. So hyped for Hitman vr I enjoyed it a lot back then on the Psvr1 even with it’s low resolution and bad controls with the Ps4 controller. Now it should play flawlessly on the new headset. Also excited for Metro VR.
Says the Xbox shill🤣🤣
it was KAKA 💩💩💩 the only good thing was GOY and that on its own cant save the show 😂😂😂
Metro and Midnight Walk on VR seem great, and new Ghost for next year is peak.
Why my man Jin Sakai is not there wtf Sony
What's up with Sony not being able to retain iconic characters they keep replacing them. Joel, Kratos, Peter, now Jin. I liked those OG games cuz of those characters and they keep replacing them can't say I'm a fan of that
Always excepted it would be a new story/character/island. Jins story and growth was complete.
Likely a character inspired by the legends of the Ghost
jin story ended in tsushima bro
L take 😂
I went into this state of play with low expectations and was pleasently suprised. Ghost of Yotei looks like the best game of the generation and The Midnight Walk and Hell is Us also looked really interesting 🤷
