A big reason I’m concerned for ES6 (that I rarely ever see mentioned) is that I don’t think BGS is willing to take risks when it comes to the lore or settings anymore. The thing that sets elder scrolls apart from other fantasy settings is the batshit crazy/convoluted lore and the fantastical environments. I think that media companies as a whole are not willing to take creative risks which is why we have so many reboots, remakes, and recycled material/mechanics. As greats as Skyrim is, BGS has slowly dulled down their lore since Morrowind and I fear that will continue.

Thank you, people forget who insane and in many cases incredibly dark elder scrolls lore is and its world. It’s basically lord of the rings but without the Christianity redemption arc.
Ever race in the series commits genocide, war crimes and holy wars. Hell it’s often stated by elder scrolls fans that in this world it’s actually immoral to not do such acts because of how evil elves and other races are. Pelinal is an individual who wiped out the Alyieds and in order to wear his armour you have to have good morality meaning the gods even endorse it.
Other aspects of the series also can’t be used in the “modern” age. Things like races having genetic advantages over others, the fact that all player characters are/were male (Neravar has no been reconned to unknown), only having four human races which are distinct from one another (Darwinism and old thought of how human groups developed).
I think the reason why elder scrolls was so successful (besides being just a fun adventure) was that the world tapped into ancient mythology and classical tales from old ages both in the horrific and the magical.
The feeling of doing whatever you please in daggerfall, the otherworldly feeling of morrowind, the classical chivalrous nature of oblivion, and the Beowulf feeling of epicness in Skyrim. Regardless of where it is (high rock or Hammerfell) there’s no way a modern game studio can capture the old magic. This was the case of starfield as now you have to play it safe. Starfield should have been a more depressing experience. The majority of humanity was killed on earth, constant wars between a Roman esc republic vs a libertarian collective destroying each other only for a space jihad to occur and them xenos on steroids to appear with the character becoming a heartless god that transcends existence. It should have been a tale in which while humanity has achieved colonization among the stars and advanced to new scientific heights it has to loose its birthplace, identity and sense of belonging in the universe. They tried to tap into that with Consolation being this once proud colonial group of explorers but now is a relic of an old age.

I agree with you that we're seeing a lot of consequences from bad design decisions. The point I disagree is putting faith in BGS. We're seeing a lot of doubtful design decisions, game after game, and from my gamer perspective, I see BGS trying to make that Skyrim experience translated into other universes, and failing on each try they do. And that's the ugly thing I really try not to believe, but it's becoming more and more harder to negate: BGS don't know what they've done to make Skyrim great. And so, they do not know how to make those games after to be as enjoyable as Skyrim was. It's pretty difficult to put some faith at this point.

Exactly. Let's look at what they've done since Fallout 3. Skyrim was a popular success but they kind of dumbed down Elder Scrolls. Fallout 4 was also a huge success, but they dumbed it down too. And since then, it's been extremely hit and miss. Maybe it's time to accept that BGS had a brief window of greatness which has since closed.

I think the main thing people are failing to recognize is that Skyrim is really just not very good either. It comes together to form something fairly enjoyable, and mods can really make it great, but all the other common BGS problems are very much present. Awful writing, UI, extremely simplistic combat, generally dumbed down mechanics, character progression doesn't matter, lack of dialogue and choices, no interesting characters, looks ugly and clunky for its time. Skyrim's success hinges entirely on exploration and mods, that's the only two things that actually work.

A feature I think Bethesda needs in future games is what CD Projekt Red called "dynamic cutscenes" in Cyberpunk 2077. The characters are motion captured and act out conversations. It adds to the immersion immensely without it feeling like the game is ripping the controller from your hand like traditional cutscenes. I don't mind traditional cinematic cutscenes at all but some people do. I actually love traditional ones in games like Red Dead Redemption 2. And yes I know dynamic cutscenes probably won't make it into Elder Scrolls 6. Bethesda seems quite content with their lifeless NPCs.

      Creation engine cannot handle mocap
They desperately need to figure out how to integrate it, but they’re still using entirely hand animated cutscenes and that is absolutely what makes the characters feel like shiny, plasticine dolls. And even then, those animations are stiff. Compare it to baldurs gate 3, from a much smaller company. Those animations are way more dynamic despite not being mocapped. BGS either needs to ditch creation engine or integrate mocap.
The writing and voice acting is pretty mediocre too, but the animations are mainly what make it feels so lifeless.

I mean the biggest space rpg franchise in the last 20 years is probably Mass Effect, which borrows a lot from Star Wars. So in away I can understand why they might have one wanted to risk it and try something unique to them, but it hasn't panned out for them. The problem with Bethesda game studios is that their game design is super outdated now. You look at the best open world games released in the past 10 years and you see what makes them great is how you can just go anywhere you want and get lost without feeling restricted in doing so. Elden Ring, Red Dead 2, and Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom are perfect examples of this. Also the characters that Bethesda makes are super unmemorable and just overall BORING so their writing has to improve big time. They feel like a studio that got stuck in 2011 and hasn’t evolved since, whereas every other studio has graduated to the next big thing.

You can't do these things in most barren open world games.

I do agree the writing and characters need to be better, but I honestly don't care if the games are considered "outdated" or not. Who decides that anyway? I can make up my own mind on what I consider "outdated."
I play those games because I like them and find them fun, just like I also like to play other open world games too, including the ones you mentioned and don't play the ones that don't appeal to me, just like people can choose to not play BGS games if they don't appeal to them.
I enjoy having flavours and variety. I don't need every game doing whatever is trendy or going to UE engine and getting lost in a sea of other UE engine games. If I want Red Dead on Rockstar's rage engine, It exists and I can play it regardless of its pros and cons , but I'll always still go back to creation engine games because they have their own unique pros and cons too. I don't need TES VI becoming a Red Dead, Elden Ring or Ubisoft clone. If they do that, I fear I will have very little reason to play newer entries and will likely just stick with the ones built on CE.

What's funny about all this is that I feel zero need to go around saying that other games are "outdated", demand they need to change engines and make countless TH-cam videos about how much I dislike their newest entry and how "bad" it is (you know who you are). But they should definitely be studying what their competitors are doing in the gaming landscape and at the end of the day the market will speak for itself. Nothing wrong if you enjoy Starfield but out of all the games that they’ve made it’s the one that people least care about and that’s just a fact. They need to do something that will stick with people because as of now they are no longer the top players in the industry like they were when Skyrim released. People still play Skyrim and Fallout 4 to this day but Starfield has lost more than 75 percent of its player base already. Not a good sign at all if you ask me.

A big issue I've had with BGS titles since the Morrowind days is they've been simplifying mechanics and rpg systems. You start seeing it with the implementation of immortal characters so the player can't break the main story and skills going from 27 in Morrowind to 21 in Oblivion then to 18 in Skyrim. They've reduced crunchy numbers and skill complexity to make the games more inclusive which is great for building a community but it makes the experience more generic across each playthrough, and while removing some fluff is great for overall game flow nearly cutting the system in half removes a lot of personal options one has. They did something similar with Fallout's skill system, by changing it from a system where you invested into skills and SPECIAL ranks which unlocked sometimes gameplay changing perks and instead making it a generic skill tree. The added clarity was a good change, but the removal of complexity was unnecessary. We see this culminate in Starfield which tries to take from both but winds up not feeling great to interact with mechanically because of the way skill challenges are set up making it both overcomplicated and oversimplified, and just plain tedious at times.

A long time ago, Todd said in response to TES6 not being in development: “We are not just Elder Scrolls and Fallout. We have a lot of ideas and we want to be able to explore those ideas as we feel so inspired.” (This may be slightly paraphrased - it was a long time ago, after all.) He also said, “We don’t have the technology to do what we want to do with it (in reference to wanting Horse-riding to feel authentic and impactful relative to the scale of the environment it moves in), so we just want to hold off until we’re able to do it the right way. We don’t want to just release TES6 because everyone wants it if we don’t think we can match the giant legacy left by Skyrim.” (Again, maybe not a 1-1 quote, but pretty darn close, and definitely respectful to his words - not slanderous or hyperbolic.)
My problem with this is, sorry Todd, you don’t get to decide what Bethesda is known for - you’re already known for Fallout and Elder Scrolls. And, since you’ve given these statements (around the time the very first teaser mountainscape was revealed with the Title TES6), many great games have released who did amazing jobs at horsemanship such as RDR2, many of the medieval sims to include Kingdom Come Deliverance, and even some other games that are less notable (and memorable apparently) but possibly just as fun in their moment. Players don’t need perfection in video games - even though they think they do. What players need is a fun, exciting story with great gameplay offering a lot of player agency. Skyrim certainly isn’t the epitome of current video gaming technological excellence, yet players keep coming back to it - why? Not because the horseriding is amazing, but because everything around it is just… fun. I know that’s terribly subjective, but nevertheless true. It stayed on-design, and delivered on the core vision by not getting distracted by other subsystems (like micro-transactions or forced gameplay loops).
If Bethesda wants TES6 to do well, it needs to embrace the game for the game’s established lore, and not in the anticipation of making money. The money will come if they focus on making an excellent game that honors its legacy.
The chief complaint I have, however, is not that the excuses feel disingenuous and short-sighted to me, it’s that my generation built the foundation of Skyrim’s success. Unfortunately, many of the generation who started in the early years of The Elder Scrolls fell away when TES 4 released because it no longer felt like the same game. But, my generation took up the mantle - we played TES4 and thought that was amazing! Then, we all held our breath for 11-11-11… SKYRIM!!!!! OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!! It was the first fully immersible medieval “sim” offering players so many avenues to explore their own vision of a character in a high-fantasy medieval setting: Rogue Mage? Mage with Heavy plate, and the ability to pick locks?! Yes please!
But, Todd Howard didn’t respect us. He said, thank you for your loyalty and dedication to Skyrim, we’ll use your money elsewhere instead of giving you Fallout OR TES6. Listen, we’re in our 30s now. Many of us have families (not me 😢) and can’t dedicate time to something as expansive as Skyrim anymore - look at age demographics for WoW - I was there at the very start, but I can’t dedicate my life to a “lifestyle game” like this as much these days. Look at something new and exciting like RDR2 - it even closed its doors - it opened AND closed its doors before TES6 released, and people like me loved the open countryscape and raw feeling of midland USA at the turn of the century in the 1890s. TES6 might be my generation’s last Elder Scrolls because Todd waited so long. Sure, if TES7 DOES release in our lifetime, it’ll be like an amused chuckle: “Oh, heh… that’s cool.” What he should have done is give us TES6 after no less than a decade - we would have been excited if they had maintained Skyrim design theory but just in a new setting - and possibly with new character customization options. Honestly, if I’m any indication of the larger player base, if a game’s setting is cool to look at, the story is at least par for the course, and character customization is ROBUST, we’d be happy even if the horsemanship felt a little off. Heck, if they were able to release Skyrim AGAIN - I know, I know - but have it look so updated and without dumb PNG planes for leaves visible to the unscrutinous eye, we’d be cool with that. In fact, simply reskinning that version to be a desert telling your SpeedTree software to turn all the trees into sagebrushes, a little artistic cleanup, and then BAM - Hammerfell.
It’s not that I think their games suck (though I’m clearly more disillusioned than not), it’s that I don’t trust Bethesda anymore to have our best interests at heart. They’ve put themselves in a dangerous/risky position by holding off on TES6 for so long that, honestly, our imagination of TES6 will far outdo anything they release. They will try to create so many planets- I mean ecosystems - and then, not fill them with good game content, telling us that in real life, you could walk through an entire desert without ever seeing any points of interest. This isn’t hyperbolic, they’ve done it before. They’re going to mix in modern-day social politics in an effort to please a community of gamers who don’t care about it, and when all is said and done, the only part worth mentioning won’t even be Horse-Riding. It’ll be a little portion of the game the team phoned in, but that became the most genuine, honest game design element.
Needless to say, I’m not enthusiastic about TES6, though I’m interested to see what they do with it. But, if they fail to deliver, I’ll let my candle fade for Bethesda once and for all. It’ll become just another company like Ubisoft, BioWare, or whatever that company was who made Skyrim: Dead on Arrival.

My biggest issue with Starfield was (before it came out) and still is, that they spent resources, and TIME on this game. When they could have put out BOTH a new Fallout and Elder Scrolls game in the time it took to make Starfield. And I could have let that pass, but ONLY if Starfield was a masterpiece, a true 10/10, but it wasn’t. The fact this studio can’t seem to handle making 2 games at a time, is there biggest problem. Starfield would have been fine, and received better, if they actually released an Elder Scrolls and/or Fallout game around the same time. But nope, they wasted a decade of development time on a mediocre game instead.
And one other thing I really don’t get, is that TH-camrs, like Matty, NEVER bring this issue up. Especially because it’s so obvious it’s the actual issue at hand. The problem is they barely ever put out games, and then when they actually do it’s stuff nobody wanted, and nobody was asking for, like Starfield and Fallout 76. And ultimately the blames is pretty much solely on Todd Howard’s crappy ego. He thinks the best thing to do is to force people into liking games they don’t want, instead of just putting out the games people keep asking for.
And also, at this point, to answer Matty’s question. No Elder Scrolls can NEVER live up to the past. At this point unless it’s an 11/10 it will be a disappointment. And ultimately it’s because it will have taken 15 years+ to actually put out a game people actually want. They should be working on The elder Scrolls and Fallout at the same time, but they’ve proved they’re too dumb to actually do that. It’s not a mystery, people have been telling Bethesda EXACTLY what they want. And Bethesda absolutely refuses to listen. And that’s on them for being complete idiots.

One major factor that has me not as concerned about ES6 as some is that Elder Scrolls and Fallout both have decades of lore and worldbuilding attached to them that the writers can call upon for making a story or at least use as a crutch to fill in plot holes. A writing group coming into ES6 will have to make factions and characters, sure, but they don't also need to make an entire world or universe like they had to with Starfield. Given how Bethesda seems to enjoy splitting teams and lessening efficiency by proxy, having to come up with an entire galaxy worth of content at partial creative strength seemed destined to flounder, and they ended up getting into a habit of half-baking things from there. With ES6 and FO5, the worldbuilding will be there for them to use and build upon.
Personally my main concern is that the slippery slope of procedural generation they're on right now becomes too tempting for them to abandon, and they refrain from handcrafting the world like they did with Skyrim and FO4. Using it to make a general canvas for the artists and designers to work with is one thing, but if they use it to make a majority of the content like they did with Starfield then they'll be putting a tree-sized spoke through their wheel. If they can avoid that then the magic of exploration can carry a majority of the game with or without good writing.

I thought at this point if it’s not fun, given the amount of time mods had to round off some of the edges, there’s just no hope of Salvaging the game.
I noticed immediately the mods were very lack luster. To me that was a red flag right out the gate. I still managed to put 15 QoL mods in the game. Played the game the about 20 hours over the course of a week. I just couldn’t get into it. I traveled to about a dozen planets/moons back to back. I think all but one of them were completely empty of any sort of combat POIs. The exploration is just as atrocious as when I first played it. I can’t believe they felt the amount of loading screens was acceptable. It really doesn’t feel like you’re traveling or exploring.
The base building is somehow a downgrade from FO4. The only thing they did well in my opinion was spaceship design, however, you can’t fly around with it basically 95% of the time. So all of that good, is wasted.

Guess what game is at this very second playing on my PC as I type this comment? Exactly, a fun, interactive open world game that you can mod the sh*to out of wins out ever time. I recreated tv series, book series, movies with my Skyrim games. Lets double-check if people hate Sims....oh actually they don't! I feel that non-modders and very casual modders will never quite feel the same as decades long modders feel about Oblivion, Skyrim and the Fallout main series games.
