Also, the MLs were generally hated by a number of people because they were built in the US and weren't as solidly built as German made models like the C and E class of the time.

07-08 4WD Honda Pilot is solid (03-06 had transmission problems) if it's been well maintained. The VTM-4 Lock has worked very well in any muddy or snowy conditions I've put it in. Ours has 207,000 miles on it and has only stranded us once when the alternator died at 185,000 miles, otherwise it's been incredibly reliable. Change the oil regularly, service the transmission and 4WD every 75,000 miles, and put a new water pump and timing belt in every 100,000 miles and it will run forever. Ours still runs like it's new.

With the 4.0 which most of them have if they’re after 88’, they’re 300k+ mile engines and easy as hell to work on, not to mention cheap and parts are everywhere and the aftermarket support for them is massive. I did a bunch of preventative maintenance but I have either a bad wheel bearing or my differential is grinding (i really can't tell which lol). i have owned two xterras, purchased one from a junkyard 500 bucks, i knew what was wrong with it and fixed it for under 200 bucks, one thing to remember is if its at 100, 000 miles you must change the timing belt, most people sell them without changing the belt. best thing to do is dont drive it after you buy it, tow it home and inspect the timing belt or just change it. i changed mine myself for under 100 bucks. after that you will not have a prob with it, a fantastic car.... only buy the 2000 through 2002 model years, first generation xterra was and is a fantastic truck, im now a land rover discovery 2 owner but will always love the xterra.

Disregard all of these and look for a 3rd gen 4runner (96-02) with the 3.4L v6. Look for rust on the frame and check the lower ball joints but other than that they are pretty solid. Non interference engine, easy to work on, relatively cheap parts, and only requires basic maintenance. I had a ‘98 with 230k and now I have an ‘02 with 220k, not once have they left me stranded. You can find decent examples for around 5k these days.

A high mileage ML430 is a killer...I put 200k mls without repairs on my boat puller...great off road. My daughter totaled it (1 feet narrower) - yet started right up and drove it straight to the junk yard!
I forgot a very important element. The ML 320 and ML 430 were the first car in the US to have stability control. Because I love my children, this is the cars I bought for them (used). It is not so important that the Benz cost less than a Toyota, I am concerned about their live when they drive in snow or rain. Until TESLA the Germans were the most innovative manufacturers. I remember US car magazines praising live rear axles, carburetors, body on frame construction. I saw a recent video were Americans mocked the Benz 5 link rear suspension for being "overly complex" - yeah, right, even the new US pick-up trucks will have it.

Well, this is proof Ideal should stick to sport/street cars. Here's the list of SUVs you should get for a cheap SUV.
1: Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series. Massive aftermarket, dead reliable, guaranteed to get you over 400K miles if you just keep up with fluid changes. You will also be able to go over pretty much anything. And it won't break down! The Inline 6 is a bit anemic for highway driving though, at least going up hills. Decent examples can be had for around $2-3K. The 100 Series can be found for a bit more and it's a bit more luxurious, comes with a V8 instead of an Inline 6, and isn't as anemic on speed.
2: Toyota 4Runner 3rd gen. The Land Cruiser's little brother. Smaller, quicker, but still an off road beast. Decent examples can be had for around $3K for newer models, less for older.
3: Jeep Cherokee XJ. The biggest goddamn aftermarket for any off-road SUV. The Inline 6 is the best Chrysler motor ever, it will run forever if you keep up on maintenance. And thanks to the unibody design, it's relatively lightweight. Just a side note: avoid the 2000+ versions as the headers have an issue with cracking, and look for the Chrysler 8.25 rear axle since it's the most durable. AVOID THE DANA 35 REAR AND DANA 30 FRONT! They're both the worst options, and the Dana 35 is an absolute pile of shit. And despite the ZJ Grand Cherokee coming in around the same price with a V8 vs an Inline 6 and independent rear suspension, it is terrible. No substitute for the XJ. Decent examples can be had for around $2K
You're welcome people with a budget.
Signed, someone who wishes they had a budget but can't budget when they don't have money.

The VG33 is burley, it’s anemic and drinks fuel like Gabriel E. kills tacos, there isn’t ‘a ton’ of after market for the first gen... there is a small dedicated community.
