My paid off 2010 G37s is actually going up in value. The engines and tranny's are basically bulletproof as long as you maintain them. I've had mine 8 years now and I've had to replace a cylinder head due to a melted plug wire. Cost me $350. Not bad for 50,000 miles. Still hauls ass. Only has 115k on it.
Definitely the way to do it! No need to make payments and spend way too much on a car that only depreciates as you pay on it..so much fun can be had with cheaper older models. I lost my newer Camaro SS over an accident that wasnt my fault..so i decided to throw some shiney parts at a 1980 Camaro instead. No payment and when it is road worthy ill have just as much fun, for cheaper. Good list!
I had an 04 rx8 a few years ago. It was the most fun to drive of anything ever with perfect balance, 6 speed manual, and rear wheel drive. Then after a year, the battery died, which caused it to flood the engine the moment I tried to start it and found out the battery was dying. Heater and A/C quit working. Always keep some oil with you and check it each week. And lastly, with such little torque and horsepower numbers, comes the worst fuel economy I've experienced. Worse mpg than a 2016 camaro SS I'm wanting to get. I'd recommend the car I got after the rx8, which was a 2008 eclipse gt 6 speed. Cheap, decent power, decent mpg, didn't cause me any problems.
I don't know if I'm just cursed, but every time I go to look for MR2's I find maybe 3 cars nationwide. Then I watch this video and your example is 30 miles from me. I guess I just suck at online shopping.

B5 A4/S4 Mine (A4) was $3,000. Bigger turbo, giac tune, front mount, big injectors, intake, full magnaflow and test pipe etc. Best car I've ever owned. I do all maintenance myself, which is easy on the B5. 25psi tune with its truly bulletproof manual trans and it's an AWD party machine.
I’m so glad they included the Phaeton. I have it’s sister car the Audi A8L W12. I got mine in very good condition for only 9k. Although maintenance is expensive and reliability is questionable it’s still a whole lot of car for 9k and with the 6 speed transmission and lighter overall is a bit faster than the Phaeton!
Having owned a Infiniti g37s coupe, I will say it is the best luxury sports car in this segment. The G37s is a beast!! Not to mention with just a few modifications it can really turn heads and make people look! By the way, I don't know any G37's going under 5k, I got mine for 8.5k and worth every penny!!!
Have always loved and wanted a 944. The cost of parts scares me, but otherwise it would make such a fun project/eventually track car. Someday I will have one!
@@R3LF13 The price of labor is way worse than the price of parts, at least as far as regular maintenance goes (I don't have any experience with major repairs so that is why I specify) so if you can buy the stuff and do it yourself, that is really the way to go.

Most car guys can't afford the $30k+ price tag on enthusiast cars brand new. Heck, the base model 2020 Honda Civic with no options MSRP is 20k ($19.8k, but after dealership markup and fees). THE BASE MODEL HONDA FUCKING CIVIC. You can build a higher-spec 90s/00s car that performs much better for less than $20k.
shred1894 adjusted to inflation a comparably equipped vehicle is close in price, technology that didn’t exist yet is now standard on cars because of regulations and that drives up base prices. Also stagnant wages haven’t kept up with inflation either. The 90s and today are two drastically different economies. Auto manufacturers build what people are buying, we’re a minority to a majority of people who have money for crossovers and trucks.
Got a 2010 G37 XS anniversary edition which comes fully loaded and with the red leather seats. Only 49k miles on it and I picked it up for 13000 back in 2018. That I believe is a fair price.

The problem with the Renesis 13B in the RX8 is the electronic oil metering pump. They go bad and people don't know to premix their fuel leading to heat/wear on the apex seals eventually burning them out and possibly destroying the rotor or more. An older parts RX7 (mechanical metering pump) I bought had around 150k miles when I bought it. The car ran fine but was rusted out so I dropped that 13B into my third 71/72 Opel GT with a proper turbo and it runs like a champ 30k miles later with just preventative maintenance. People get a kick out of that car, the Turbo LE5/LNF Opel, and the first one I got with a factory CIH engine. When it's a fairly rare car you don't have people that will raise pitchforks in the air, not as many anyway.
You can get a Toyota Supra, with different (nicer) clothes, for under five grand. There is one, although with a V8, at our neighborhood corner sales lot for $4,000 (been there for a couple years, I checked it out (I'm a mechanic) and it was in good shape) and only a little over 100,000 miles (nothing for a toyota). It's called a Lexus SC300 (with a Supra six cylinder) or a SC400 with the eight cylinder. These are very nice luxury cars and, unlike many on your list, these will last, worry free, darn near forever.
I recommended that they mention the RX-8 on their Instagram and I’m 99% certain that they didn’t put it in because of my but I’m gonna believe it anyway
How about a BMW E39 5 series. I recently got a 2002 520i as my first car. And I love it. They're easy to get under 5k with high mileage but good maintenance. Mine was 3k with 270k km on it. It's rust free, well maintained and the backseat looks like it was never used. You can even get a 528 or a 530 with a lovely 3 liter flat six (in fact, all gasoline models have flat sixes, even the 520). It's fantastic to drive, it has beautiful understated styling that still holds up (unlike modern BMW's :'), it has a lot of modern luxury like dual zone climate control, cruise control, PDC, heated seats etc, it's incredibly quiet on the highway, it's comfortable and all round just a great cruiser. Yeah, some electronics can break but if you're up for doing some work on it yourself it won't break the bank and there's plenty parts available. The six cilinder engines are very reliable if properly maintained. Steer clear of the V8 models tho. It's also one of those cars I take friends for rides in and when they ask me what it costed they're always taken aback by the fact I only payed 3k for it.
A 5k mr2 is absolutely not one you want. Good luck finding a decent turbo for under 10. I love mr2's but they aren't budget friendly and going on 30 years old now.
@@scottshepherd1365 I know I’m late but rotary engine are Reliable if you take care of them. Most the time it’s not the engines fault it’s the driver who doesn’t take care of it. The Adventure Auto would still be more than $5k, especially if somehow still all original.
I dont think you can get a s2000 for less than 5k
No way.
S2000's w/ over 100k miles are going for 15k
Definitely the way to do it! No need to make payments and spend way too much on a car that only depreciates as you pay on it..so much fun can be had with cheaper older models. I lost my newer Camaro SS over an accident that wasnt my fault..so i decided to throw some shiney parts at a 1980 Camaro instead. No payment and when it is road worthy ill have just as much fun, for cheaper. Good list!
Thanks for the great content, Thomas and Pastor James!
You’re really not gonna find a 6MT G37 Sedan for 5 k
Unless it's at 150K and in pretty cooked condition. lmao
Lucky to find one under 15. 6MT are ""taxed"" you can scoop up the shitty automatica all day under 7k tho
@@midnightdarkchocolate Actually all the auto G37's have a slap shift, you do at least get to control the transmission.
In my area3you can
Theres a 6mt sedan on autotempest right now for 5500
I don't know if I'm just cursed, but every time I go to look for MR2's I find maybe 3 cars nationwide.
Then I watch this video and your example is 30 miles from me.
I guess I just suck at online shopping.
Yes it looked
I love Throttle House. I Love Everyday Driver. Holy moly! I love this video. Thanks guys for hooking up with Todd and Paul. Awesome to see!
FINALLY, THROTTLE HOUSE SHOWED SOME LOVE TO THE F-BODY FIREBIRD/CAMARO'S!!! I owned a '97 Formula & despite owning two '98 Mustang GT's, the Formula was my absolute FAV!!!
Don't buy the infinity with an automatic transmission.
Jetco made those and they can't hold up overtime or will break if you up the power.
@@umakegoodcookies yes, a manual nissan/ infinity is a great option
@@JeetS1 Problem is, they aren't anywhere near $5k. I paid $13,100 for my 2012 G37S sedan 6mt with 80k miles
Jeet Sadaria lol why the living fuck would you buy an automatic trombone after watching this vid🤦🏼♂️
Jeet Sadaria also sounds like your an armchair mechanic telling people the power limits of parts you’ve never tested.
leinad20002 im very sorry for your loss
B5 A4/S4
Mine (A4) was $3,000.
Bigger turbo, giac tune, front mount, big injectors, intake, full magnaflow and test pipe etc.
Best car I've ever owned. I do all maintenance myself, which is easy on the B5. 25psi tune with its truly bulletproof manual trans and it's an AWD party machine.
I love the camera click sound when you show the price
That's some investigative drama level type shit
Its crazy to me how this video is only 2 years old and more than half the cars on this list are between $15,000-$25,000 for one that runs.
Exactly. If you're watching in 2022, then every used car is 3-5 times more expensive
Chill out James, you're being rather loud in church
I’m so glad they included the Phaeton. I have it’s sister car the Audi A8L W12. I got mine in very good condition for only 9k. Although maintenance is expensive and reliability is questionable it’s still a whole lot of car for 9k and with the 6 speed transmission and lighter overall is a bit faster than the Phaeton!
Yup 200k+ on an Infiniti or 170k+ on a BMW sound like great mileage. I'll take two of each.
The amount of miles those cars have though 😭
5:00 - Is that a handbrake or a spear lmao
yes
Having owned a Infiniti g37s coupe, I will say it is the best luxury sports car in this segment. The G37s is a beast!! Not to mention with just a few modifications it can really turn heads and make people look! By the way, I don't know any G37's going under 5k, I got mine for 8.5k and worth every penny!!!
Thank you Guys for putting the Porsche 944 on the list i personally think that it doesn't get enough love .
Have always loved and wanted a 944. The cost of parts scares me, but otherwise it would make such a fun project/eventually track car. Someday I will have one!
Cheapest on Autotrader in the UK is about $8K with 160,000 miles :-(
@@R3LF13 The price of labor is way worse than the price of parts, at least as far as regular maintenance goes (I don't have any experience with major repairs so that is why I specify) so if you can buy the stuff and do it yourself, that is really the way to go.
I bought a 86 944 in 18 for $2650 spent $3000 on the timing belt water pump and other maintenance. Drives like a dream

Everyday Driver and Throttle house in the same video! Love it. You guys should get together and do a video series of some sort. My two favorite channels.
Hey, glad to see the RX-8 on the list.
It was definitely the best looking and driving car I've ever had. Even my family of 4 loved it.
Yes, the engine failed on me after 160.000 km, but everything else is top notch. Especially its very precise handling.
The other cars are just nice to me. ;-)
That's a decent amount of miles for a rotary....
@@AustinMBecker Rebuilding them is pretty simple compared to 4 strokes though
have you made the rebuild ? One of the small avantage of a rotary is that a full rebuild is not very hard and not very costly compared to usual piston engine
@@nnietee Nope, I'm no mechanic enough, and my situation made it unfortunately a good time for her to pass away. I went to ugly hybrid and electric after that.
@@AustinMBecker That's pretty typical from what I've read. If you use 2 stroke oil, redline them often, and keep the oil topped up the 09+ RX-8s can get 200k miles.
You guys need to revisit this in 2022 given the increased used market prices...so maybe best used sports for for $10k?
I gotta say other than the rx-8, all of these cars are actually kind of reasonable.
Im reeeeally liking that 944,holy shit
Apparently you didn't watch until the end - or see the BMW, or the Porsche, there's no such thing as a cheap Porsche - and BMW gives them a run for your money.
umakegoodcookies not gonna lie I wrote this comment half way through the video not knowing he was going to mention the Phaeton or 944. But the E46 could still be reliable if you buy a good one and don’t try to mod it
I had a Saab Aero. I saw it, had no clue what it was until doing research. Put about 30k on it in 2 years and sold it. Fun car.
Car guys: “Complain new cars normally don’t come with manual options. Only buys used cars because it’s the smart thing to do.”
The cycle continues
Only new car I ever bought was a manual.
Got a 2010 G37 XS anniversary edition which comes fully loaded and with the red leather seats. Only 49k miles on it and I picked it up for 13000 back in 2018. That I believe is a fair price.
Oh dope I found one for 4900... okie dokie lets check the mileage. ahh yess 895,000 miles and 14 crashes. Sign me up
I owned a really cheap Phaeton when was 30 and i loved it! Did not have a single issue with it for 3 years.
Coincidentally that exact Saab is a couple towns over from me
Had my rx8 for over 10 years now and no problems other than the oil cooler hoses failing. Only fault i have with it is the low tq but its a special car that always brings a smile to my face
I live at the beach, I have a "main car" a Genesis coupe, and a "grocery getter" an Accord LX-S, but I want a drop top convertible that is both cheap and fast. I don't think you guys have done a best bargain convertible cars video yet...
Oooh.... like a top end Eos, or Del Sol, or were you thinking more high end?

Great channel guys. Love that Thomas is in his man cave and James is in his mother's living room??
Does James live in some sort of monastery?
After seeing mighty car mod's JDM mr-2 fix up, I'm not sure I'd want to experience the rust I'm sure 5,000 canadian mr-2's have
but....mid engine!
A 5k mr2 is absolutely not one you want. Good luck finding a decent turbo for under 10. I love mr2's but they aren't budget friendly and going on 30 years old now.
Finally a unique cheap car list. Thanks Throttle House.
I think a g35/g37 or the infiniti variants are really good for 5k.
The fact that this is just going off of kinda fun or neat or cool is gonna do it for me
13:00 what the hell are those child stroller seats lmao
My older brother has one and yeah those back seats hilariously small and uncomfortable. Fun car, though!
A red 97 Pontiac firebird was my first car. I felt so cool driving that thing 😂
The Saab was what Jim had in the office omg
jeff bob he had the 9-5 wagon
T.B. Squad no, he had the 9-2x aero
Iv officially decided that i like this car youtube channel over the "other" Canadian car youtube channel.....
What I didn't know was that the rx8 had suicide doors 😂😂😂
Matches the suicide engine
It's also considered a sedan on insurance
back doors
Loved that I had a backseat in mine, I miss that damn car.
@@scottshepherd1365 I know I’m late but rotary engine are Reliable if you take care of them. Most the time it’s not the engines fault it’s the driver who doesn’t take care of it. You simple can’t buy a rotary and treat it like a piston engine. Mine made it to 200k before needing a rebuild and it wasn’t even the apex seals that failed it was the coolant seal
Very happy an old school muscle car made the list. The 80s camaro was dope as hell too
You guys are beauties for making this. Student budgeting
E46 is the way to go. I’ve had 2 , current is a 330ci zhp 6MT and they’re great. Easy to get parts, tonnes of aftermarket support and almost everything related to maintenance is covered by channels such as 50skid shoplife and throttle house!
Great video guys, and I heartily agree on the Porsche 944 as a great car for the money. Definitely try to spend a bit more, but they're a driving experience worth checking out. For a future topic, how about low cost daily driver's that can be weekend warrior off road as well. Keep the great content coming.
I don't know if you will still check comments on this video however you missed a beat on this list. For under $5000 you can get a Volvo V70 T5 which was the UK's high speed interceptor of choice for over a decade. 0-60 7.3 top speed 155mph (stock) Not only that Volvo estates are the ultimate sleepers looking like a granny car but the 780 estate won the touring car championship, If the Skyline is the Godzila then the V70 T5 is a dragon spitting fire as it tears up the strip or track. After hearing all the cars on this list and how many of them have horrible control makes me happy I have a GLI, I mean I was happy before too but now I'm even more happier.
Would like to add a car for this list, the Volvo S80 T6 1, you get them for around $3,000-5,000. Powerful twinturbo straight 6 and comfortable as fuuuuuck.
make sure to get the 2002 or newer though, they reinforced the gearbox from then on

I bought a flawless, absolutely clean, mechanically sound 2005 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG for $6,000 on the dot. It has 89,000 miles, a clean title, drives great, air suspension, heated cooled massaging seats, panoramic sunroof, and a supercharged 5.4L V8 capable of 200MPH.
