- Budget Overland, budget offroad, budget overland vehicles. These are my top favorite budget off-roaders for under 15,0000 dollars and some even under 10,000. Tried to stick to more reliable cheap off-roaders rather than digging at the bottom of the barrel for something that is going to leave you on the side of the road.

Would love to see different points! Not trying to go crazy but $15k is pretty low which is always good, but, seeing what may be in reach beyond would be awesome.
I always wondered why the Sequoias weren't more popular. Those things go forever. I don't think I've seen one with less than 300k miles. But to avoid the Toyota tax, the Nissans are underrated. I would even go as far back as the 1st gen Frontier/Xterra and spend the extra money to restore it. The first gens look tired on the outside nowadays, but they are super tough little trucks. They are full-box-frame and have a manual transfer case. That means find one with a manual transmission and you have one of the last old-fashioned "fully" manual rigs ever made.
I've had my Trooper for 17 years, never let me stranded and I've taken it deep into the woods. It's rare I see another one out on the trail but that's a bit why I love it. It's a stand out in the sea of Yodas and Jeeps.....
Yeah I’ve maybe seen them on the trails 2-3 times max. They aren’t a flashy new truck but they get the job done.
Absolutely love my 2005 Xterra. It's the Off Road trim, which is the same as the pro-4x in the 2010+ models. Manual transmission. factory e-locker. It's climbed everything I've thrown at it and cost half what comparable 4Runners were going for, and it's just really fun to drive

Any problems with SMOD?
The only good offroader by Nissan is the Patrol the rest is shit. They are dirt cheap for a reason.

@@cts7648 correct they are way to expensive new for the short term they will last you. Better buy a Toyota, Isuzu or a Mitsubishi.
Sequoia, H3 and XTerra are DEFINITELY great choices and i'm seeing more of them built for overlanding in the mountains here in BC, Canada!
I was blessed with very successful parents and now blessed with a very successful husband, so we could always afford the vehicles we wanted. However when friends look at our overland built 5th gen 2021 4Runner, and my husband's gen 1 and 3 F-150 Raptor, thet always say "It must be nice... I wish I could afford to get into overlanding too"... My husband and I always recommend several of the rigs you have here and recommended this video and videos like it!
It is actually smarter to use an older rig, however, I like my modern comforts and eagerly awaiting the 2024 GX 550😁
Yeah you can almost always add those comforts after the fact but there is something really nice about having a brand new sorted vehicle that is really nice. But yeah my plan is to one day have a beater off-roader and something really nice for camping and daily.
last thing. A VW Touareg is literally the same thing as a Cayenne and they're way cheaper. The Cayenne was just a rebadged Touareg and the VW is really cheap. Like 3k cheap. You can get them in a diesel too
Yeah I mentioned it in the video that the VW is essentially the same thing. I think the Porsche is one that I see more often modded and I just see more of them in the road but that could just be because I live in Golden CO and people are more boujee here
The Cayenne has a much better transmission.
@@Nigriff in the diesel models maybe thats true. in the 3.6 6 banger it's the exact same.
@@Nigriffthey both have the same Aisin transmission. But some Cayennes in North America come with a manual (though it’s uncommon). Touaregs come optioned with a manual outside of NA

I can vouch first hand for my 1st gen Xterra. Has all the DNA from the 90s pathfinders and Navara from Australia. I've built mine up to 33s, skids, sliders, front locker, and most modern comforts with everything except a rear locker and reduction gears for about 5k total (including buying the vehicle). I have done all of it DIY though, paying someone else it would have easily been 8k-10k. Hope to see you out on the CO trails, keep up the good work!
Yeah DIY really does help. I used to DIY everything on my 4Runner but I’ve been lazy lately. XTerras are great, they kinda remind me of high school. Rich kids had the new Xterras when I was young. And 4Runners too though.

Great list. One that I never see make this list is the tahoe and suburban from the same era. Never owned one, but that 5.3 is still being used in new models today. And the g80 auto locker was available even back then.
I have a video just like this from like 2021 I think that has the Tahoe. I owned a Yukon in 2007 as my first car and it’s been my favorite car to date.
Would be awesome to see MPG stats too. With gas prices not really moving anywhere up up, that category has become a lot more important to me (and potentially many others).
For sure. Mostly everything I talked about in this isn’t great on gas but I do have a list I want to do that’s high MPG overlanders. Mostly crossovers.

@@almostkindayou can’t have that without batteries or turbos, V6 and V8s are inherently bad for mpg and emissions.

My first car that I had in HS and college was a 2001 Isuzu Trooper. Great vehicle, in the 6 years i owned it , i put roughly 45k miles on it, and the only issue it ever gave me was starter blew. No leaks, just an ultra dependable SUV. Sold it to by a LX570 when i finally had big boy money, didnt want to but it had one fatal flaw…..it was the 2WD model. Now I do lot of camping and off roading, but due to friends coming with me and not having a capable car, I bought an 05 Suburban Z71. But if i see a 4wd 01 trooper with the 20 year package, im hopping on that asap
Jason, I just got a (new to me) 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, the old 2004 Grand Cherokee finally gave up the ghost. Love to off road and trying to decide what mod to first. All of your videos are informative and entertaining, keep up the good work!
My buddy Dewie, the guy that has the last channel “Colorado mall crawlers” has a buddy of ours on his channel a ton and he has a trail hawk. I’ve wheeled with them a few times before.
I think he even has a walk around of the trail hawk and what he’s done to it.
Was not expecting to see a local offroad Porsche on here! But I will always have a soft spot for those Xterras and XJs, currently have a '22 Subaru Forester Wilderness that I've modified even further for overland use. Surprisingly capable for what it is, definitely not budget, but way closer to budget than the new proper 4x4s on the market.
We were just looking at the wilderness outback and how crazy offroad ready it looks. I had a forester before my 4Runner and my girlfriend now has one. That’s the car we drive when we want to be good on gas mileage. Love those things. AWD is great for most overlanding adventures. I wheeled with a crosstrek once and it was great other than not having a low range.
@@OXFOOT I used to have a '19 forester lifted with the Ironman long travel kit, same generation, and it's amazing how much more capable the wilderness trim is compared to my old '19 after putting on the same lift. No low range, but it'll two wheel up a rutted hill without issue.
I think the Cayenne is underrated for real. Nice to see it in this list.
Relatively cheap to pick a used one up and they are pretty luxurious SUVs. They are fairly compact for an SUV too.
People discard them pretty quickly as too expensive to fix and own or as being too old (if the owners are kinda rich) so shouldn't be too hard to find regardless of your country.
Very true. I really didn’t know much about them as off-roaders until about a year or so ago. Didn’t take them seriously until recently either. Great vehicles.
What about cost of ownership and reliability?

Commander got cut last minute for another list. Almost made it though. The Xterra is a great one, it’s made both of my lists so far.
I think I'm with you with the when it comes to the Porsche and the Toyota they're both underrated awesome good vehicles and honestly would be so cool to be like going down a trail with a Porsche
Yeah I think they look super cool and they aren’t that bad when it comes to maintenance either. The sequoia is also really great too. Honestly I’d be happy with any of the cars on this list too though.
@@OXFOOT yeah I really do love your your list videos you do like this from like camping supplies from different stores to like cars under a certain price point I mean it would be kind of nice to maybe see a little bit more trucks featured in them but that's only because I got a small farm so I need to be able to haul hay a little bit more but honestly they're really good really enjoyable and you give everyone just the right amount of information on your list to help people stay informed and know what to look for

Excellent video man! Thanks for including some of my video clips in the video! All of your suggestions in this list are fantastic choices. I think it is important for people to remember when buying an offroad rig that they also need to leave a good chunk of their budget for offroad modifications and upgrades. If you go out and spend all your money on a brand new vehicle and have to make monthly payments on it, you are most likely not going to have any extra cash to start adding modifications right away and at the end of the day you are going to have a less capable vehicle and will be less prepared on the trail. Buying something cheaper and putting the necessary modifications is just a better move in my opinion. I am really glad you chose to include the H3 in this video because almost nobody gives it any attention. When you think of Hummer, you always think of the H1 but the H3 often gets overlooked. Its smaller size is definitely an advantage if you are in any kind of forest setting compared to the H1. All in all, great video man! 😀😀😀
For sure. I made that mistake when buying the 5th Gen and for the first few months had to hold off on the mods because I spent way too much on the 4Runner. Going back in time I would have gotten something a little more reasonably priced and out that money somewhere better.
Also I swear I’m starting to see more H3s now that I made this video. I never really noticed them before. Hopefully I’ll see more modded H3s on the trails soon.

I love the new 4runners, I wish I had some of the stuff you guys do in my older 5th gen. No easy way to install push to start that I like.

I’m actually trying to start a channel as well for overlanding out here in tennessee and man its rough starting out lol! But one day I’ll have it built up just one piece at a time! A great addition to this list would have been a first or second gen Ford Explorer with either the 4.0L OHV V6 or the legendary 5.0L V8. They are also based of basically the same frame and power train as the Ranger.
Pretty sure my last list in this series had that but I might be wrong. I have more videos planned for the series though. They are a tad time consuming with editing but I should get moving on those as soon as possible.

I have a 04 Nissan Xterra and love it it goes anywhere we want has even pulled a f150 out of the mud with ease and all the bystanders in jeeps were shocked
They are really nice. If I hadn’t have gone the 4Runner route, the Xterra was certainly in the top 3.
I had an 04 that I loved! On multiple occasions I had jeep guys tell me "I wouldn't try it in that" before I walked said obstacle. Now I have a 2012 and love it even more.

Yeah I had to cut the parts about each individual cars down unfortunately. Harrison Schoen has some more in depth on his TH-cam. Maybe I’ll do a dedicated video on them at some point. Eurowize isn’t far from my parents house when I visit them for the holidays, maybe I’ll see about doin more.
Something to add on the frontier is they made a nismo edition that is the early pro4x that you can find for around 10k depending on miles. Has e locker and solid platform to start. Downside is the vq40 is known for weak timing chain guides, but if they are maintained and preventative done they’ll keep rocking
The nismo edition is really great and would be the one I went for if I was looking but it’s just not as common at least where I live.
@@OXFOOT yeah I got super lucky and picked one up. Needs some minor stuff done like axle seals and threw a catch can on it to try and help the vq40 a bit. So far it’s a solid setup, now for mods haha
How hard is it to change the timing chain guides?
Timing chain guides were only an issue up to 2008. Smod was an issue up to 2010. Yes the guides are a massive project.

I had a 1999 Yukon as my first car. I loved that thing so much. Wish I would have kept it. I talked about the yukon in my other video on the topic but I have another video in mind for it in the future.
I’m a Tacoma guy, but I’ve always loved the 1st gen Nissan Pathfinders they’re super reliable and are basically SUV versions of the 80s-90s hardbody pickups.

Just today in Puerto Rico there are 45 Monteros listed. Mitsu has always been prevalent in Puerto Rico, they are the same DOT US spec vehicles sold in the US and you can put one on a container or a carrier and get it to Jax in 5 days. A 2001 Montero I just saw listed for $9K

Yeah a part of me wants to get a truck now so I have an excuse to build an older Cayenne out.
In the market and my top contender is the Sequoia, but now you going to make me go look at Porsche videos and doubt what I kind of already decided on.
It seems like the sequoia is the hot new thing since I swear I see more and more built out every day. The cayenne is starting to see more as well. Tough call. I think the sequoia is a great choice though and I think it will only expand in the market as an overland/offroader
@@OXFOOT I hope I don't panic buy one. The car market is in a bit of a crash right now so I will be waiting a few months, but overall the Sequoia looks like a sweet deal.

Yeah I almost just did the WJ but I think I’m leaving it for the next video I do like this. The XJ is just such a tried and tested vehicle I had to do it.
One that you missed out on, which would be better than a Montero, WK Grand Cherokee. There is aftermarket support, its a great off-road package when he buy the trim with the Quadra Drive II system. I have one, a 2005 Limited with the Hemi. I paid 12k, with 77k miles a few years back. Have not had any problems with it. You can also find some of them with Mercedes Benz diesel engine.

Great video and love the vehicles that you mentioned! I currently own a 3rd and 5th gen 4Runner and would strongly recommend a 4Runner to anyone! I have also owned a Jeep XJ and definitely regret selling it, as the prices have increased dramatically for a good example. Can't beat an XJ Cherokee or 4Runner for reliability and off-roading.
I love my 5th Gen. Excited to see what they come out with for the 6th Gen either next year or the year after but this thing is great right now.
And man the XJs are great but who would have know they would have gone up in price, so no regrets. The 4Runner is a better buy in my opinion.
@@OXFOOT Love my 5th gen as well! The 6th gen would really have to be a major upgrade for me to part ways with it. Seems like they may utilize a 2.4l turbo in the 6th gen, which may make many folks stay with the 5th. Excited to see what's coming either way.
@@OXFOOT I agree the 4Runner ismuch more refined and better vehicle long term. My first car was an XJ, that my parents owned and kept for me since it was brand new. I sold it when I was 19 for cheap. Which I could have anticipated the price increase and hype around them as it was a one owner with only 50k miles on it! I was able to purchase a 3rd gen 4Runner recently for only $1,300 (all it needed was some basic maintenance) so I guess it evens out! Look forward to viewing your next content!

I would like to add the Volvo XC90 while im here especially with the D5 Diesel and 6 Speed Auto 😍
North America never got the Diesel but Europe does and there are tons of them around and trust me if you do oil changes regularly and at least one transmission flush in the cars life these drive trains are good for 300.000 Miles without major issues.
The163hp version has the best fuel economy of them it can reach 40-50mpg when you take it easy and cruise along.
Oh that’s nice to know. I have a list coming up with good MPG off-roaders so I’ll have to do more research on them.
I have always liked those Montero's. Wish the old man had kept that and the FJ40. Nice lineup of vehicles you put together there. I'm currently convincing my dad to buy up the Cayenne S for this stuff
The Cayenne/ Toureg builds flew under the radar for me for a long time. I wish I'd have bought one back in the day.
@@OXFOOT yeah I had the Cayenne S and then sold it to my dad. Then shortly after my cousin built up a pretty sweet one all built up and got me thinking about it again. Definitely can find some good deals. Just the first gen you have to watch for the cooling pipes. Stock they crack so you have to swap them out for a cast set.

The Cayennes sure look interesting, im finding plenty of them from 2006-2010 with under 150k - 200k kms for under 10.000$ cad, meanwhile same year 4 gen 4Runners and FJ's with 250-350k kms are 20.000$ cad and up, it's the worst time ever to start overlanding, guess i'll have to wait until next year
Yeah I mean when you buy a Toyota you know it’s going to do well for a long time. Little things here and there can break in a Porsche but it’s not as bad as people think. Porsche is like the Toyota of Germany. Smart people who like fast cars buy the Porsche cars because they are not that bad when it comes to reliability.
Getting conflicting info about the sequoia Atrac and it seems like it may just have something called “TRAC” but maybe not ATRAC. There is also people talking about how their later one does have ATRAC. Either way it’s got a lot of offroad capabilities.

LX570 is definitely up there too, it’s a 100 series land cruiser without the markup

Would u ever look at the 2nd Gen Acura MDX for off-road stuff? The SHAWD system is pretty neat but idk how capable it is for off-roading. Not much off-road after market for it either
So as a general overlander for light offroad roads it might be perfectly fine. I certainly wouldn’t do heavy rock crawling with an AWD but I’ve seen people do crazy stuff without a low range gearbox and get away with it.

Awesome video! I was so glad to see the Sequoia on this list! It’s definitely super under rated in my opinion and a great budget but super capable rig. I love mine!
You could add the 07-10 grand Cherokee or commander. Limited model 5.7 hemi quadra drive 2. Has a front, center, and rear differential with electronic limited slip. That actually locks them together like lockers
I almost bought a commander back in the day. I want to do another video on off-roaders/overlanders under 10k at some point and I would for sure have the commander on that list.
I bought one a little over a year ago for $8300 with 135k on it. It's been a pretty good daily. Ain't saved up the the money yet but eventually plan on putting an oldman emu lift on it.

I had originally started an extremely clean 01 Mazda B4000 build. Kick myself now for selling it. But like my F250 build as well. Great video, very informative.

You forgot the discovery 3/Lr3!! They are awesome overlanders lr3 is definitely the most reliable Land Rover out there and with all the room inside it’s definitely a very underrated off roader/overlander!
Still trying to find a late model first gen Sequoia. I hate how much they jumped in price. Also if your lucky you can find high mileage Land cruiser 80/100 for 15k or less, also the Lexus variable too.
Yeah where I live I haven’t seen much for the land cruisers but as prices drop maybe I will. The LX, and the Land Cruiser will be on a list very soon assuming this video does well and people like it.
@@OXFOOT ya and of course with how things are going these all might change again in price.
But honestly though most of these vehicles require so much money to get to where you want. A lift, 33's sliders, a rack.
The truly most cost effective option for overlanding is to just get a TJ Jeep Wrangler. You can get a solid one for like 6k still and have 9k to do whatever, not that it'd need much because it can fit 31's from the factory without rubbing, it's got gobs of low end torque and they're dumb easy to work on. like yeah you don't have a ton of space but if you don't need it it's perfect and saves you a ton of money in mods. and if you need a lift to fit 37's you can get it for like $4-600 instead of $1200 for an old man emu kit for like any Toyota.
TJ is on a list with Jeeps coming up. I learned to drive on a 97 TJ Sahara and I really like them a lot.
The xj 4.0 is the most bulletproof motor out of all the vehichles on your list. they take one heck of a beating, and run forever.
It’s a really great engine
Monteros are fine but good luck getting parts for them. If you don't see many on the road then you're not going to find a lot of replacement parts for relatively cheap. I can still fully service my Land Cruiser 100, I just can't find an untracked rear wind deflector or a steering wheel. That's probably why if I was on a budget, I'd go for a 4th gen 4runner. the v6 is still a 400k mile engine easily and it gets better mpg than the 2uz.
(which by the way, it doesn't say pre runner anywhere on the vehicle, and nobody on Facebook marketplace or craigslist or eBay will say "pre runner" to make it easy for you. If you want to distinguish between 4x4 or 2wd, look for the silver knob to the left of the climate controls in the 4th gen. And look for a physical hi-low range selector next to the drive selector in the 3rd gens.)
Yeah no one ever wants to advertise it as being a “pre runner”. And yeah I hope the price of the LC 100 comes down at some point because I really want one. I have a UZ engine list coming up and there will be LCs and GXs on the list for sure.
@@OXFOOT I was between a GX and an LC and I spent like 3k more for the LC with like 100k more miles on it. But still glad with my decision.
Great video! LR3 over cayenne tho. LR3 beats all of those in comfort, capabilities, and price combined. Also, pretty reliable 👌

The Mercedes ML w163 from 1997 to 2004, the Jurassic Park vehicle, great offroad and on, with it's 4matic and low range gear truly unstable, just like the Porch cayenne, for little money this days
I've always really loved those. Maybe I'll add it to the 90s list I have coming.
@@OXFOOT Note, the ML from 1997 to 1999 had some electrical issues, but most of the issues ware corrected after 2000, I currently have a 2001, bought mine with 80k miles and currently has 126k and running strong, I take it offroad a few times a year and drive it across country every year, driving on highway, trails and offroad trails in the mountains of North Carolina and West Virginia, never left me stranded, I added AT 32" tires, upgraded the coils springs, 10.5" ground clearance, it has great approache, Departure angles and it has climb any mountain and offroad trail I have been too, Hurricane Creek, rated 5 out of 10 difficulty, Hard Rock off Road Park, Patriots Offroad Park... more

I enjoy all of the rock crawling videos. However since a significant portion of Overlanders basically cruise down a trail and hang out in the wilderness, would a front wheel drive pickup handle basic trails with some dry or wet sand? Say like in central Florida.
I think overland is very subjective. In most parts of the US it’s just dirt roads but in like COLORADO and west we would consider it light to moderate offroading and camping. Front wheel drive might be better than rear wheel drive but preferably you’d want at least AWD. That being said if it’s a dirt road any wheel drive will work find. Sand can be fine if it’s hard packed but when it gets loose it can be a major way to get bogged down. You could be fine but I don’t want to say you’d be fine without looking at the conditions your driving over first.

Hey thanks a bunch for the response. I have a new Ford Hybrid front wheel drive Maverick pickup coming soon. Most of the time I’ll probably be driving on and barbecuing on the beach parked next to Honda Accords, but since the wife agreed to go camping with me I figured that I’d give “overlanding” a shot. First thing will be to learn to use recovery gear, and also NOT go alone! :)

Recently bought a 2004 Ford Explorer as a winter beater. Cost me $2,500. Considering taking it on trails, since I wouldn’t be very upset if that car literally never came back.
Explorers are great. I think I recommend them in my other video, if I didn’t I should have. Just like the ranger. Might not be a bad offroader and cheap too. Might have to do some trail repair but they aren’t super super complicated.
When you started this video with a porsche I’m like 😶.. but then you added Xterra and Pathfinder now you’re talking 👊🏽
Gotta start with the controversial one first but the Xterra is always a go-to budget offroader.

I just went back to review your video after watching gear junkies video about the top 40 SUVs that can never go off-road. several of the vehicles from their list are on your video. Though it does appear that most of the vehicles on your video are meant to be upgraded, whereas I’m sure gear junkie is speaking to stock vehicles.
Not sure who gear junkies is but I’ll go check it out.
Montereo/Pajero 3 and 4 are mostly the same - 4 has better diesel engines(still 4m41 but with added common rail and better turbo). Reliability is not an issue in those.

Don’t sleep on rebuilt or salvage title off roaders. I found a 2016 Tacoma OR for 23k last year. It was low miles and very clean. Stay away from water damage and get the carfax. I bought a Trooper for $800 in 2003. Just put on mud tires and beat the hell out it. Very surprised with it.
Before I bought my 4Runner I test drove and almost bought a branded title 4Runner even thought the damage wasn’t too bad from the photos I saw I worried about getting financed and getting insurance because I didn’t know much about salvage titles at the time.
@@OXFOOT State Farm allows full coverage on most salvage/rebuild titles.
@@jonnewbury3482 At the time I hadn't ever messed with branded titles. Now I wouldn't mind it if I knew why it was branded and if it was a wreck, I could see pictures of the before.
in my family we have 2 pathfinders, mine is at 400k km and my dad is at 575k km, both vg33, lack of power but NEVER left us stranded. never, also the Montero or Pajero is very cool, King of Dakar, and no LR Discovery? those are good but better with an engine swap
They are really great! Also yeah the LRD almost made the list but I’ll have it on another list for a lower budget.

Montero sport could work. It’s slightly more in the crossover category and therefore a bit suited for another list I have coming up.
Should have included early 2000s gas ram/Ford 2500s. It's free 1tons and a ton of payload capacity for overlanding
I'm surprised the Jeep WJ didn't make this list. Just as cable as the XJ, less expensive, newer and more creature comforts than its predecessor.
A cheaper alternative to the porsche would be the VW touareg. If you search hard you can also find the trim with front locker.
Yeah I talked for like 1.5 seconds about the toureg but I could find anyone online that would let me use footage for this video. It’s just as good but even cheaper.

I have a beautiful built 2018 TRD off Road premium and it’s price has risen a lot in value. The thing is I’m coming from a BMW M3 so I miss going fast a lot of the time and in Jersey I don’t do much Overlanding. I was thinking about selling it and using half to buy a C7 Vette and the other half to buy a Cayenne so I can still hit the beach in the summer with my vehicle. What do y’all think? I was offered 40k from Toyota
You know I think similar all the time. The cayenne won’t be as reliable as the Toyota but it’ll certainly be cool and more reliable that a lot of other rigs.
I used to have motorcycles so I live having a fast vehicle as well. Once I get back to making some decent money again I might go for a fast car and a truck.
At the end of the day it’s up to you on what you want to do but it could be cool. You could also find yourself a used 4Runner, an older model but if you want that cool factor the cayenne could be interesting.
I’d see if you can’t chat with some Cayenne owners on IG and see what they think and maybe they can lead you in the right direction.

I drive a 2006 H3 , it’s heavy gas hog …however it hold its own on the trail and small crawling. I keep it because it’s paid f🤷🏻♂️
What’s you mpg look like? I’m getting like 15 in my fairly new 4Runner.
@@OXFOOT I get about 14MPG but I noticed that if I use mid-grade octane it performs better and my MPG seems to increase.
My next vehicle will be a Sequoia, however I think I'll go for a 2nd gen for the room and larger engine.
Yeah the second gens are great too. Hadn’t seen too many people wheel them but on paper they are just as capable.
@@OXFOOT the 1st gen definitely has the aftermarket support from what I'm able to find. I hope that you'll include it in your next video of vehicles at a slightly higher price point. I'd be interested to hear your feedback on them.
basically no aftermarket support. They are absolutely massive, like worse approach and departure angle big, as well as width, making it an easy target for some scrapes. The 5.7 while still pretty great, is not as reliable as the 4.7. The leaking cam tower is the big one. But also its a timing chain engine which means the chain lasts forever but the guides don't. and nobody services those parts before the engine grenades itself. and get one that's already had a water pump replaced, since those only last about 100k before they fail. I'd go with a first gen for sure if you can get over the fact it looks like an old ford f150 on the inside.

@@davidhunt9692 they have decent aftermarket support. Unless you’re just talking about the second gens? There’s a few companies making parts for the first Gen and some for the second. I see tons of lifted and built out 1st Gen sequoias where I live. Obviously you aren’t going to get the support like the land cruisers or 4Runners, not even close, but it’s a growing community between the sequoias and tundras.
For an improved version of the Montero, you can import a turbodiesel 5-speed Pajero for under $15K. More style as well.

Just wondering why no one ever mentions the Nissan Titan, Armada, and QX56?
It’s just a bit too large for the kind of offroading I do so maybe i forget that most people consider overlanding going down a forest service road. They aren’t bad, I guess they just slip my mind as they are a bit large.
@@OXFOOT yeah, but the Armada and QX56 are basically the same size as the Sequoia and the Titan is about the same as the Tundra. Anyway, I enjoy your channel and the content. I overland my 2010 QX56 and she’s a beast!

Basically any Toyot 4x4 between 1995-2010 is going to be a great budget 4x4.
I love my 3rd gen. Really want a 1st gen Sequoia or a GX.
Those really are some of the best years for Toyota. You just got to keep an eye out on the frame to make sure the previous owner/owners took frame rust precautions. Other than that it’s the best years.
GX would be awesome but the price needs to come down big time.
