Can the LG V30 's DAC withstand the rainy days' humidity, a water drop or a breath into the jack hole without being damaged?
I've never actually tried testing, but the phone specs do state IP68 rated.

I got my V30+ last week and i have been using it with my gaming headset, hyperx cloud ii (62 ohms), i must say dac is amazing but i want to get a proper headphones for this beautiful device. and i don't want to take my gaming headset outside. i have been looking for this for couple of days and i'm thinking about buying a beyerdynamic dt770. ( i assume dt990s will leak sound outsite, i'm planning to use it outside and at office) maybe i can mod it with detachable 3.5 jack input.
what is you suggestions bro?

Dt770 Pro 80 ohms is ideal. Comes with a 3.5mm plug and an adapter for 6.3mm.
Nice video. Thanks Gavin. I am interested in this phone especially because of the audio, so this video is the best that i could find. But i have a question to make you, if you will so kind to answer me.
when you say trigger the DAC you mean the Amplifier? Because my guess is the DAC can be activated no matter the type of headphones impedance. Yes or not?
So the audio quality should be pretty much the same if not perhaps a little more stable, flat frequency variation.
If you toggle the DAC on in settings, no matter what happens you use, you will get a much wider dynamic range and overall better quality.. When I say DAC , I mean the Quad Dac & Amp. IF you dont have the Quad Dac on, it uses the standard snapdragon version etc... Also using the Quad DAC /Amp uses more battery.
Thanks a lot for your reply Gavin. I did assume that this should be the case. Anyway do you know how could sound this ATH-MSR7 headphones? They are been rated with very nice sound, and i would like to know how they sound together. They have a impedance of 35 ohms so they should not trigger the Amps (for what i understood less than 50 does not), should they have enough power, volume to drive this ones?
By the way i saw your photos on Google plus and they look amazing. I value first the audio quality on a smartphone than the cameras but if i can have both its obviously better. They say that the pixel 2`s are very good as ¨point-and-shoot¨, but do you know if we can get the same results using the Manual Mode on the V30 ?

The audio Technica are good headphones but not the best match for the V30. Go to xda developers and install the Pixel camera port. It’s in the V30 thread under news and discussion. Best of both worlds then.

If i remember correctly V20 automatically change mode according to the impedence of headphone. I am not sure, but i saw some option such as Normal & high end headphone while plugging the headphone on HIFI settings.
Yes it does. 50 ohms is when it switches to high impedance mode.
Great review Gavin. Subscribed yesterday! Sorry for my broken English. I nedd something for spotify premium on Lg V40. Which I should choose? Price is not limited. Just optimal device for spotify quality of sound. I'm thinking about beyer 770, sennheiser 559 598 599, Sony and B&O wireless. Is there any benefit with wires on spotify vs apt x?

To get full benefit with the LG, you need to use a wired headphone. Also look at the new Sennheiser HD 560S.

I’m looking to get a pair of wired headphones that has 50 ohms or higher to use with my LGV30 that aren’t massive and ideal for outdoor use, have to be over ear and closed back, my budget is £250 or under.

thanks for audio review. i still enjoy my v20. im pretty satisfied with the audio quality, but i want to change it only for its weak battery. which smartphone in the set with (wireless & wired at the same time, if possible) over-ear headphone do you recommend to buy?

The Sony WH-1000XM3 are no good in wired for the quad dac. In bluetooth mode its has no relevance on the quad dac. A mega popular option is the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 ohm version , see info on it here amzn.to/31U0Oeg or if you want to spend all your budget, these amzn.to/2TWbHJO but there are open back as opposed to the beyers that are closed back design

Yes it does although the DFR might have more detail. Marginally

They should do unless you trick your V30 into high impedance mode with your M50s.
What would be the difference between the 80ohm and 250ohm? Would they get equally loud?
Not on the V30 or similar. Need more power. The 250 are slightly smoother. 80 are better. I prefer 250 overall. But my ears don't need massive volume

Hey Gavin. To clarify: the 250ohm won't go as loud as the 80ohm on the V30 even though the V30 says it'll drive up to 600ohm? I got the 80s but have since discovered the 250s have a coiled cable (a significant factor for me) so I'm looking to grab a pair of those too.
What do you think about Venture Electronics Zen 2.0 ear buds for use with the V30?

Hey there, what about dt990 pros? Can they achieve what the 660s can musically? The 660s are really out of my budget, (in India they cost us almost 790~ US dollars). So 990 250 ohm vs 770 250 ohm? Which one should I buy? Thanks in advanced :D gonna pair it with G8x actually (same quad dac as v50)
Review of those is out next week on the dt990s. You are better getting the 770 but 80 ohm.

250 sound better but 80 ohm have more overall volume. The 250 might not go loud enough on some music eg classical
The 990 250 are a no go IMO. Harder to drive then the 770 250.
@@GavinsGadgets Thank you so much for replying! I think I'll go for 770 250ohms :). Unfortunately no stores where I can test the cans around here :( Though I use foobar2000 with replay gain and -5.1db gain on the preamp on my shure se215. Still feels very loud xp. So I think 250 may be ok for me.

Can 32ohm earphones like blon bl03 triggers or activates the quad dac?
High power mode on the quad DAC is 50 ohms and higher.

Yes it is used. Its like have low and high gain controls except the quad dac does the switching automatically based on ohms. Under 50 ohms, there is a better quality sound, lower sound floor and wider dynamic range. Worth noting that the more power needed the more phone battery it needs too.

Thanks Gavin! I've been waiting for this. Unfortunately V30 Indian version doesn't come with B&O headphones. However, Im using sound E80C and they are affordable and sound good.

Gavin Fabiani-Laymond One happy thing is pricing rightly and competetive without B&0 earphones. Ofcourse LG headphones does a very good job which I never expected almost close to B&O. I guess LG might have used the B&O drivers with their branding. Please post your review on E80s also once you get them.

The DAC is always triggered if switched on. Higher impedance headphones greater than 50 ohm trigger high impedance mode to provide more power needed to drive them
Gavin Fabiani-Laymond thanks for your reply, I have a question. Does the high impedeance mode improves the sound quality by a good margin? I am currently using Audio technica ATH m50x and one more tripple driver. Both of them shows as normal audio device, i found they sound better in my macbook air if i compare it with my g6. Please suggest if I should invest some more money on High impedeance earphones to get the best audio from my phone.
I sold free B&O earphone of V20 at dirt cheap price. It was really not worth $277. HTC 10 free hires earphone was pretty good comparatively, but it died after 1 & half years of heavy usage😌
Just invest in a pair of Beyer DT770 Pro 80ohms if you havent got a pair already. So good with the V20 , heres a link to them for more info amzn.to/2DrjepP

+Michael Palmer The V30 sounds marginally better but not enough to warrant upgrading just for the audio or any other feature. Worth waiting to see what LG brings out in April or May this year.

I bought sennheiser hd6xx to use with the v30 I'm pretty sure the phone won't be able to drive them too well but I don't have a DAC amp to use with it so I'll have to make do with it
+Sami Bari the 6xx are 300 ohms and are at the extreme end of what the V30 can do. They will still work ok. Tube amps are the best combo with the 6xx series. Desktop tubes that is.
Thnx for information. I am very happy with my htc 10 and 1more triple driver, but V30 is mightier, it deserves something more special. I would love Isine 10 but they don't seem to be suitable for traveling, city transport etc. I am hearing nice things about fiio F9, pro and fh-1, all under 100€ and might dethrone 1mores. V30 deserves more expensive ones, it probably will allow most of them to truly shine.
PS. In my universe, only wired 3.5 exist, others are dissapoitment for me.

+Everything Everywhere they are a good starting point and great value at around £113 versus a lot of other options. Note sure what 1more will offer in the future. The Sennheiser HD660s are fabulous but a lot more money.
