  • LG V30 Real Audio Review time! The V30 is SO good! How good is it? It's so good that it makes us angry that other companies are getting rid of the 3.5mm headphone jack. Let's dig into the stats and benchmarks, but we're also going to complain about this trend towards dongles and making us re-buy accessories we already like...

      yes well apple had success with the the dongle hell they created with the macpro (aka the trashcan), macbookpro and with their shitphone 7.
      there is no reason to believe that customers want something else now, because even this small yt tech community is devided, with the idiots sucking and praising on everything smartphone makers shit out.
      there in no space for real criticism because someone might get offended.
      if the 3.5mm jack is antiquated then round wheels are long overdue. lets see them fix that by reshaping wheels to squares. but dont let them sheeps know thats been dont before! 😭🤣😭🤣😭🤣😭🤣😭😭😭😭

    If you buy a nice set of USB-C headphones and they only work on one device, they are basically useless. If we had ONE standard for all devices it would be fine, but when every single device uses a different proprietary method of creating USB-C audio it turns into a complete mess! I just hope that by this time next year we will have gotten some kind of standard for the new age of wired audio. For now though, the 3.5mm headphone jack still (in my opinion) needs to stay on headphones, as you can still use some kind of dongle, until we can get this all figured out.

      I think the ZTE nubia Z17 delivered analog output via USB-C, and came paired with an passive USB-C to 3.5mm-jack adapter. That's pretty much the best solution I think.

    • @tristan_talks_tech
      @tristan_talks_tech 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      GeneRaxz Yeah that's probably the best it can get right now. If all manufacturers could include passive dongles it may help to improve the situation.

      It was figured out! There was and is absolutely nothing wrong with the 3.5 mm jack. It is nothing more than getting gullible people to think that they are getting something better because Apple said so. The problem is that Apple is given way too much credit anymore. They are no longer innovators, they're just another smartphone company that cares about profit over product.

  • @Al.j.Vasquez
    @Al.j.Vasquez 7 ปีที่แล้ว +97

    Speakers should not matter much when it comes to audio quality, i would take the V30 for its DAC rather than the pixel for their dual speakers ANY day.
    It's stupid to praise and applaud dual front facing speakers when the same phone does NOT have an analog output for headphones.

    • @sirnathanieltayloresq7800
      @sirnathanieltayloresq7800 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      most people still do use wired headphones because they can be had cheap. Most people dont really care for audio quality nor pay for it. Its social conditioning. Like how microtransactions in video games. They start to say bullshit like "digital audio" etc. Get rid of the headphone jack, can charge $30 for an adapter

    • @Al.j.Vasquez
      @Al.j.Vasquez 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      D3rocks4u wireless headphones tend to be pricy, people don't care about sound, so they go for the cheaper they can find, which is wired headphones, even the most sold beats are wired.
      I don't see wireless headphones replacing wired cans for audio enthusiasts or cheap bastards, at least not in the few years, even tho the companies are pushing wireless audio, their cheaper phones still include a headphone jack, for convenience.

    • @Al.j.Vasquez
      @Al.j.Vasquez 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      D3rocks4u yeah i know what you mean now, still, it's a small margin, since not most of people can actually buy the flagship phone that dropped the headphone jack.
      People usually buy wireless headphones as for their second pair of headphones.

    • @sirnathanieltayloresq7800
      @sirnathanieltayloresq7800 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      not to mention the other issue with wireless headphones: battery. You forget to charge your headphones, they will die, and you wont have any music. That is one issue people forget. Yes while a wireless headphone can last an entire day, people can forget to charge them at the end of the day. Wired headphones never have that issue because as long as the phone is charged, your headphones will work

      I had high hopes, but my cambridge audio dacmagic XS at £80 attached to my laptop is noticeably better SQ even when using Spotify extreme, let alone CDA or 24 bit hi-res. I'm using a pair of DT880 250ohm and some Klipsch x11e and both sound better with the Dacmagic. The V30 is also too quiet, although I haven't yet tried the fool the OP amp trick yet with lower impedance phones, but you shouldn't have to. Nothing I can do to compensate with the D880s as their impedance will already invoke the higher amp output.

    I cannot for the life of me understand why some people are championing this move. It's one thing to not care about it but it's another to say that I'm "whining" when I'm pointing out that this is a downgrade.
    Seriously, you wanna kill the jack, go right ahead. But PLEASE for the love of Tech Sifu, implement a PROPER UNIVERSAL standard that EVERYONE can use instead of making some proprietary crap on a universal connector that doesn't even give a hint of whether it would work and in the worst cases, actually deceive consumers given the same port type.

    Thanks for doing these audio reviews. One product you might want to consider trying with your Pixel 2 XL "Real Audio Review" is the AIAIAI bluetooth headphones. You can use them with the Pixel 2 XL three different ways: with the adapter as regular corded headphones (3.5 mm plug), without the adapter as USB-C headphones (plug straight into Pixel 2 XL USB-C port), or cordless as bluetooth headphones (they are "Made for Google" and have the quick pair feature). I'm really interested in the audio quality of the new Pixels (didn't buy last year's Pixel XL because of poor audio quality through the headphone jack and through the speaker), and I would love to see a comparison between these three options. Having the same exact headphones test all three connection methods would be a great way to see quality differences between them. Just a suggestion. Looking forward to the review either way.

    I wish LG would allow you to toggle the high impedance mode. I some headphone that are less then 50 ohms, but could benefit from the full power of the V20/V30 (planars like the HE-500 and others).

      i do own the Fiio X5 3rd gen (i bought it at launch) i plugged a sennheiser HD700 into it, set it to High Gain & listened to it for almost a month (i was very disappointed with the quality) it was worse than an old Bose quiet comfort 25 plugged into an Exynos Samsung S7 edge (sound quality wise !!!).
      one month later i got the LG V20, plugged the HD700 into it (i was completely relieved) it sounded so much better and clearer (the difference was night and day) even my brother listened to both devices and made fun of the cheap Fiio X5 III (which had a louder AMP volume, Yet the quality was horrible, when plugged to these specific headphones).
      9 monthes ago i traded my V20 for a V30+ (they are both great) ill never buy a phone other than an LG V series.
      keep in mind that ive never tried a second generation fiio x5, only the X5 3rd and the old Fiio X3 first gen.

    Thanks for digging in and bringing us this level of detail on the LG V30. I tend to keep my phones for a long time, sometimes four years or longer. I'm seriously considering buying this one because of the audio experience, and because I'd like to have something that delivers high-quality audio to my cable-driven headphones for longer than the next two years. I think your theory about driving accessory sales with the removal of the headphone jack is accurate. It's nice to see one company proving that the tech is far from obsolete.

    Well.. Is the sound any good when everything set to "flat" or "normal" with just the Quad DAC enabled? EQ filters just messes with the sound...

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I only listen and test flat. The impulses are a new filter for attack/decay.

    • @DroneCorpse
      @DroneCorpse 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The impulse response choice is a marketing gimmick for the type of FIR filter you want for the anti-aliasing low-pass filter you want at Nyquist frequency. Unless you have a dog that can listen to the difference between a slow roll-off at stopband vs fast, there's no point. Also, interpolating a 16-bit (even 24-bit) to 32 bit just to have the EQ settings that are arbitrary (not research based a la Olive et al's IEM target curve), is simply overkill. Even pro audio uses max 24bit DSP racks.

    +Pocketnow Are you not aware of the 3.5mm phone jack extention trick? This tricks the phone into turning on the internal amp for ALL headphones.
    Simply plug in a short female/male 3.5mm headphone jack extension into the phone 1st. Make sure the head phones are NOT plugged into the female end when you plug in the extension to the phone. When the extension jack is plugged in, the phone turns on the internal amp because it can't read the headphones resistance. This tricks the phone into thinking it's using a line out cable. So plug in extension cable 1st, then plug in your headphones. The amp will boost everything so be carefull with low resistence headphones as they can easily be over driven.

  • @Tigerex966
    @Tigerex966 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Well said and true.
    But I hope your prediction of the headphone jack and plug are not, as it has been through 100 years or so and is still going strong, and the majority, by about 99% of headphones ever sold, but the profit rate is so high on wireless headphones that most headphone/phone makers are caving in, and purposely giving features to the wireless phones , and withholding them from the wired phones, when wired can do it better and with no interference.
    Not just that, but many bluetooth premium professional wireless headphones have great dacs and amps, but that dac and amp is only usable while in wireless mode, I am seeing this more and more, so on those headphones the wireless mode sounds better even with compressed audio files, when the manufactor could, like a few have, make the dac/amp accessible in wired or wireless mode, which than makes the uncompressed wired mode sound better like it is.
    Make no mistake Apple bought beats to get a monopoly on the wireless headphone market, to do that they had to eliminate the headphone jack to entice you to buy wireless, and make wired headphones look stupid with a required dongle, and when you lose that dongle, they make extra money on replacements, they also make a killing on requiring the camera to lightning kit for portable dac/amps for hires audio, when lightning is really just usb with apple proprietary connector on top.
    Apple wants anything that is connected to it's phones and computers to have to pay apple a fee, in one way or another, thats why no sd card, or headphone jack, and the new unrepairable airpods with sealed batteries are designed just like their phones, to need charging so much, that after a year or two you upgrade or throw them into a landfill.
    Bluetooth uses more of the phones battery than wired headphones, even today in 2017 the old headphone jack is superior technology than bluetooth, now wifi headphones could be great, aside from using even more processor and battery on your phone, never mind all of the wireless waves around you.
    Google is doing the same thing, they laughed at apple taking away the headphone jack, until they realized they had extremely profitable plastic wireless earbuds to sell, and they made sure to give them exclusive features they purposely withheld from wired headphones, and they sell replacement dongles for $20-now $9 after an outcry.
    Everyone can now clearly see the headphone jack is only being fazed out to create a market for profitable disposable battery powered wireless headphones, and lightning $$$ money for apple accessories and headphones and dongle sales, similar for Google.
    The removable battery was similar as they can easily do removable battery and water resistance, but removable battery means that after a year, buying a fresh battery means your phone holds a charge just like it was when it was new, so your chances of wanting or needing a new phone is diminished, and even LG could not resist that temptation.
    It's really sad :( how we are being played for profit $$$$, and only profit by these huge corporations, so I applaud LG for hanging on to the sd card, even when samsung tried apples strategy to up sell you to the highest storage phone, and to get you to buy a new one next year for more storage space, and for keeping the removable battery longer than anyone, here's hoping they will keep the headphone jack no matter what, as it is really cheaper to include it on the phone than as a pack in dongle, however the lost dongle sales and highly profitable wireless bluetooth disposable headphone sales which LG and samsung have been making for years, may be too much temptation in the near future.

      I think it'll be like a lot of other industries. Convenience will almost always win over quality. We actually have 3.5mm jacks because they were more convenient than all the weird proprietary ports used on flip phones. While consumer gear might ditch the phono jack, I doubt the recording industry will any time soon. Like cameras, consumers will give up on the standalone cameras and lenses, but enthusiasts and professionals will keep the market alive.

    • @Tigerex966
      @Tigerex966 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree as a musician many of the products I use have the 1/4" jack, 3.5MM jack, XLR jacks, coaxial and opt digital jacks, I was really miffed when Apple took the optical digital feature from the macbook pro's headphone jacks, so I kept my old Macbook Pro.
      I would love to see LG continue to improve the headphone jack, maybe by adding digital out to it and maybe a second jack and or usb mic accessory.
      Having said that it was nice we both got our rants out :)

      Actually I agree. If the phone goes into my pocket upside down, it's the most natural grip to pull it back out and be looking at it rightside up. The headphone jack on the bottom would facilitate that. Also makes it a little easier to charge and listen if it's in a pocket, purse, or in a container when driving.

      I've been auditioning the Note 8 and the Pixel 2 XL for a almost a week now. The Pixel 2 XL sound output is unfortunately the weakest part of the hardware. The built-in stereo speakers are flat and thin compared to the Note 8's single bottom speaker. It doesn't help that the Pixel's top speaker can't produce as low of frequencies as it's bottom speaker. When turned up to either the highest or second highest setting the Pixel phone's screen actually vibrates which doesn't speak well for it's build quality. When using the included headphone dongle in the USB C Port the sound once again falls flat, lacking both the depth and volume I'm hearing from the Note 8. I'll be picking up the V30 tomorrow or Saturday and will be making a final decision on which phone I'll be keeping. The Note 8 leads right now even though I hate all the bloat from Samsung/Verizon, there are cases that actually have side walls higher than the curved glass screen, and it's still stuck on the Android's August security patches.

      WHat's not true? I carry a spare fully charged battery. Takes seconds to swap it. V20 the last phone to have a removable battery.... It's very true.

    Damn, its too bad I won't give LG another chance. My flex 2 had a discolored OLED display, my Nexus 5x bootlooped, my Stylo phone had a yellowish display. All my phones got updates after a very long time. Nah. No more LG.

      Charoen P lmao go check out the nexus5x subreddit and you tell me if I'm just one customer. And look at the V30 forums too. LG doesn't have great quality assurance.

      Miguel Angel Medina Rise G4, 5x have bootloop issue. I have a dead G4 with me but still millions uses use Lg phones out there with no problem. May be it wise to try other brands which I do too it's our choice.

    Good review if you are talking specifically about sound quality for music. However, I came on here to look up sound quality for phone usage. It is a phone first after all. I have only had this phone 2 days and I am taking it back. No one can hear what I'm saying or understand me when I use the speaker phone. The speaker is terrible.

    Most manufacturer like Google & Apple (own iTunes and Apple Music) don't realise that music is one of the big factor when buying a smartphone. Good thing Sammy and LG keep it and not following the stupid Apple trend!

    You are so right about the reasons behind the death of the 3.5mm jack that it hurts, for now it's worth it to keep buying phones with it because it will probably be gone by your next upgrade, LG won a consumer on me with the V20, let's hope there's a true standard by the time we have to upgrade, still the 3.5 jack will be missed

    • @SomeGadgetGuy

    Why can the V30 only get my Hifiman planars (sub 100 ohm) to a fairly high level? I listen on max without fatigue and I'm confused as to whether this is a problem with my V30.

    The one plus 5 has 30 steps to it and I'm enjoying the audio from that over the previous 3t thinking of picking up the LG v30 next just hard to chose between lgs audio, the pixels software and Samsung's beautiful screens.

      For an audio standpoint, LG V series Does have a large edge over the other phones. The audio chip sets aside from being sourced from a respected brand, is properly utilised for its purpose. This video just shown us that. The V Series is a head on it terms of SQ to most mid-priced DAPs. I own a V10 their very 1st "Smart-DAP", still enjoying up to this time of commenting...

    It is heart breaking that popular mobile manufacturers are dropping 3.5mm audio jack just to sell their expensive/proprietary/exclusive accessories. I hope there will be a few sensible manufacturers to understand the primary needs of users.

    Outstanding review as always. However, I didn't believe LG's that vulnerable to boot loops until it happened to my V10. That prevented me from purchasing the V20. This will be my next phone but I'm just going to wait a while til I read any issues (or no issues) before buying.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, LG handled that poorly, but I haven't seen any consistent evidence that phones after the G5 have failed to the same degree.

    You tactfully said that these manufacturers are just nickel diming consumers. Well done haha. Nothing wrong with having both blue tooth and a phono jack. How would you compare the v30 audio quality to the HTC 10? I got the 10, because of the smaller form factor.
