The biggest buzz ever for me is catching fish on flies I tied myself. I love your raw talent of keeping it real, regardless of the result. I'm not the best cod fisherman but love your ability to show me how its done Hinney, ATB.
@@fishinghinny Look forward to seeing more of the fly fishing. I'm waiting for some winter storms to increase my chances of catching cod before going out again.
Great effort. I've been fly fishing for about 20 years and I'm still learning something new every time I go out. You can practice your casting anywhere Danielle. I used to amused the local kids practicing on the local school field. I used a hoola hoop as a target and a short leader with a cats whisker fly on which helped with the turnover. Also an easy cast to learn for still waters is the roll cast. There's much to learn and it does take a lot of trial and error but my best advice would be to just keep going at it and enjoy that moment when your line takes off with a fish on the end of it. There's loads of good tuition videos on here for casting and line retrieval techniques. Welcome to fly fishing.
@@fishinghinny Aye there's a number of casts for different styles of fishing. The basic cast, the one you're learning, is the one you will use in the main but a roll cast is a canny one to have in your armoury when you're beginning. Orvis have some good casting videos on youtube. The reason I mentioned the roll cast is after weeks of trying to teach my nipper how to cast a line I showed him the roll cast and he had his first trout on still waters some 10 years ago. It was the thing that kept him going. I'm the treasurer of of my local club and we have a number of members who take new club members out for tuition and help them with choosing the right gear and we even have a collection of kit we let new members use to try our different weighted rods and lines and reels. It's worth finding a local club as I'm sure you'll meet folk who will gladly help you getting started. Our club can be found here rgfc.co.uk/. If you ever find yourself in our area email the club secretary for a guided day on our river. I'm sure you'll find a similar warm welcome from clubs up in the North east. Tight lines mate ;)
Well done Dannielle for trying another type of fishing, fly fishing is very addictive and you will become totally engrossed. I'm now 63, started fishing with a worm when I was 6 years old, progressed into fly fishing and fly tying and haven't stopped since. You'll be tying your own flies soon, get ready to remorgage the house.🤣.
Nice to see you trying out another fishing discipline . The casting lesson is a good idea. I taught my best pal to fly fish, and she loved it. The smile on her face when she hooked into her first trout was a special moment. I tie flies and would like to send a selection to you. I'll explain what the flies are and how best to fish them.
Thanks Colin I can’t wait to hook into a fish on the fly rod 🤩 I’ve made a note of this, and will be setting up an email address for FH which I will pass to you once I’ve have it 👍🎣
Hi there, as pointed out by others when casting always start with the tip near the water, raise to 10 o’clock then accelerate to 1 o’clock pause for a 2 seconds before bringing the line forward with the tip stopping about 3 o’clock lowering the tip towards the water. One tip to stop your wrist doing all the work is to tuck the butt of the rod up your sleeve.
Good first effort. Definitely a casting lesson will help. Try to keep the rod tip closer to the water, otherwise any takes will take up all the slack line before you connect with the fish. If you are using a sinking fly try letting it sink for different times so you are covering different depths and vary speeds. Slow is often better for nymphs.
When you cast think of a clock bring the rod up.then when you feel the line on pulling back push the rod forward.thats whet mean by a clock 🕒 tick tock hope this helps you Hinny 😊
Thanks Stephen I’ll be more well prepared after my first casting lesson, I really need the lesson before I go fishing again to put me in with a chance of catching 🤩👍🎣
Well done Danni having the gumshen to give a new fishing style Ur an inspiration to anyone just get out there give it a go lifes to short not too tight lines bonny lass from scotland ❤
Hi Danielle, great that you’re trying fly fishing. I fly fished for a lot of years. After watching your efforts you are doing a lot of things wrong but I’d like to offer one tip to you. You must keep the fly line tight when you are retrieving otherwise you will never feel a take. The main thing that you need to remember is to point your rod at the water and keep the rod tip only a few inches from the surface of the water. Fly fishing is an all consuming method and is so diverse, there are so many flies and lines and you will soon be hooked. What I promise is that once you experience that first take from a trout you will be totally engulfed in the sport. Definitely keep trying. I’ll be with you all the way ❤️🐟
Thank you for this video. I bought a Lidl fly fishing kit during lockdown but have never had the confidence to try it. I'm really looking forward to giving it a go now.
Superb! You did way better than my first attempt and I almost drove my mate to tears when he was trying to teach me to cast lol Keep going and it will all come good
with the floating line, its handy to have some weighted lures, orange and silver, black if the water is clear, lots of the time the trout are feeding near the bottom
Hinny you were brilliant. Forget distance for now & never try to push it, 10 yards, is what the rod is ideally designed for. just continue to practice your technique & always SLOW down. Fish the fly right to your feet too, as the fish often follow it right to the edge. Keep your net handy, just in case- you've got as much chance as anyone. You don't suit quiet though !
Well that's a bit different Hinney good on you for trying for yourself you were getting much better and can imagine you will soon be filling a bag full of rainbows !! Ps don't forget the codling 😊
I thought you were amazing. You already understand so much for a beginner. You made a point half way through about being more gentle. This is so true. Allowing the rod and line to do the work. To be honest most men are crap at this. They just want distance. But just listening to you picking up on what is actually happening. Bye sight and feel. Brilliant. You will do well. So keep it up. On the day, actually did look like quite a tricky day for hooking fish. But your attitude even with no fish has a big thumbs up from me. Seeing Your flies did make me wonder. But I have fish long enough to understand that anything can work on the day. In time your fly box will improve, as with every thing else. Only one tip from me for now, as I can see your going to do well. Keep the rod tip close to the water when retrieving. I will sub as I am keen to see how you get on. Any advise just ask us. Good luck Danielle. Shaun.
Thanks Shaun Yeh I’ve a lot to learn but glad I’m glad I dipped my toe already. I have a better rod and reel now and my local tackle shop guy is going to show me casting and fishing methods before my next attempt. I’m looking forward to the next fly outing 😊🎣
Hi Danielle. I've seen a lot worse first attempts at fly casting. One tip is on the retrieve keep the rod tip a lot closer to the water surface. Only really want it a couple of inches above .
I've always wanted to try fly fishing but never got my backside into gear to get started. After watching this I might just give it a go. Another excellent video
Well done Danielle I cant get the hang of it 😢, my granddaughter took 2 it ,like a duck 2 water😮 , and let's know 😢 . Took a lady from my gym and her son , 4 a fish on Sunday he caught a couple of fish with a bit of help from my granddaughter 😊, the lady told me 2 day , we have created a monster 😮. Happy catching from Australia Nick 🇦🇺
Outdone by the young’uns again Nick 😆 I think kids learn quicker as they don’t worry about not being able to do things, they just crack on. Good that you’re introducing more people to the sport 👍🎣
Danielle you’re a natural- you can tell that too much effort just compresses the Rod and you may as well use a pool cue. On the retrieve keep the Rod tip low and just keep everything slow and gentle, let the Rod do all the work👍 I think I was on my fourth try to get to the same level you’re already at
Thanks Steve It’s completely different to sea fishing, I think I’m going to enjoy getting better at it and I’m looking forward to catching my first fresh water fish 🤩
