Fun fact. During this concert, Steve announces that the Escape album has reached number one on the Billboard charts and thanks the fans. The entire album and concert is amazing!
Saw Journey twice in CA in early 80s. Not only is Mr. Perry mind blowingly perfect in concert, he’s singing song after song with notes in the stratosphere, but it sounds like the album. As a tenor, and opera fan, I would say Steve is the most operatic of all rockers, with a true Italianate sound. (Warmth and sunshine in his tone). The emotional power his singing conveys alone marks him as the rarest of rock singers. As someone said before, “you don’t hear Perry sing, you feel him sing.
This is 100% live...no in-ear monitors, no after market auto-tune...Just pure magical artistry from "The Voice," Steve Perry. This is just a small part of the Journey Live in Houston 1981: The Escape Tour. Go check it out!
He's using a monitor. You can't hear yourself if you don't have a monitor. You can't tell if you're singing in the same key as the band if you don't have a monitor. Before monitors, we had to either cup our ear or stick a finger over your ear canal to hear yourself. Why would you want to do that, rather than use a monitor? And why do you think there's some sort of virtue in not using a monitor?
Just because something wasn't written for you does not mean it's not worth it, or that it's not music. There is another, larger and quite popular genre of music that I can't stand, but I would never say it's not music. I would never say it's not "worth it." I just say I think it's tacky and vile and I'm not listening to it. Oh, and seeing as you didn't make the original comment, you don't get to speak to whether there was virtue being claimed or not. Take your hate elsewhere.

Paul Rodgers was called "The Voice" in the 70s. He started with a band named Free. You can go listen to their song "All Right Now" to get a good sample of his voice. His most known music was with Bad Company. They were epic. I loved Bad Co. He did a bunch of solo stuff, but interestingly, he did about a 5 year stint as Queen + Paul Rodgers! I saw Journey in 1982. Steve Perry sang Open Arms, his voice filled the auditorium with its power and then it filled my soul. I cried so hard at that moment, I will never forget it.
You have to remember why music like this was so great at this time. We had no internet. No Skype. No Facetime. No cell phones. You on the road touring, you had to get to landline or write down how you felt in a song.
I love seeing peoples reactions when they hear Steve sing this song for the first time and the amazement. The control he has and how he projects his voice is fascinating to watch. Just bear in mind this is live, no lip syncing, auto tune or fancy effects - just pure raw talent. What an incredible vocalist. Great choice.
You are correct! No in-ear monitors , NO auto-tune, 💯 LIVE, sung perfectly using correct technique and talent. And remember this was probably his zillionth performance as they toured relentlessly. I watched an interview recently and he considers himself a crooner. The funny thing is I was not into Journey back then (77-87) but admired and respected Steve’s incredible voice. I’m falling in love for the first time 50 years later.
True story: I was living in Puerto Rico when this song came out. I was hanging out in my back yard with some neighbors, and Open Arms came on my Boom Box (remember those?). My 14 year old neighbor, Betsy, who did not understand a word of English, broke down crying from the song. Nobody uttered a word through the whole song, not even the little kids, they were mesmerized. I was already a huge Journey fan, so it was no big deal for me.

The Voice. ❤️❤️❤️. No one compares to Steve Perry. No auto tune. No gimmicks. Just the most amazing voice. Period.
The VOICE!!! Listen to lights, lovin touching squeezing, wheel in the sky, and still they ride!!!! You won’t be disappointed
This generation refuses to except that people back in the day had pure talent with out using gimmicks. Dont hate cause you cant do it.
You cant take nothing away from Mr. Steve Perry. He is the real deal. ❤
This guy had magnificent pipes! What a talent! I still wail along (badly) with his tunes in the car!
Omg!!!!!! Sooooo happy. I love Journey so much!
Steve has written some of the most emotive lyrics ever written!!!
The whole concert is available. It’s so good!!!
I have loved listening to Steve Perry for 40 yrs! My all time favorite group hands down!!!!!!!
Love Love Love Journey! The whole 70's thru 80's! Best music ever!
Steve Perry is phenomenal and SO underrated.
Who has ever UNDERATED THE VOICE….
He's actually singing again, YES!! New music coming out......can't wait!!❤
One of the most popular love songs of the 80s. Open Arms is a classic.
Most people think he stopped singing but he has come back as a soloist. Check out We're Still Here. He's trying a comeback...im all for it!!
❤❤❤
I read he's talking about touring!
he was sick for awhile and it was his vocal cords
No never anything wrong with vocal cords. It was his hip. Had hip pain for many years and then had a big operation. During that time they looked for a replacement.
@@missonababy38Nooo where did you hear that???
There will never be another voice like Perry's. A voice that defined my teenage years
Those shirts were all the rage in the 80’s. The wilder the better! That was rock n roll. 😄
I love anything and everything Steve Perry sings.
Pure Talent... no helping technics.. still THE VOICE
Steve's shirt was a gift from a fan. The print on it is actually hearts.❤❤❤
I saw Loverboy open for Journey at the Omni in Atlanta in 1980. It was SPECTACULAR!!!!! By far, the best concert I have been too. And yes, he is THE VOICE.
I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Journey live. Steve Perry was amazing.
I saw Journey in concert & let me tell you it was freaking amazing! Steve Perry's voice is perfection, the way he holds those high notes gave me goosebumps/chills! 🎶I'd like to see some of the so called "talented artist" today to hold notes like this WITHOUT autotune!🤭 I'm so glad I got to see them live!🤩Hands down one of the BEST groups ever!😊😍I loved growing up in the 80's!❤
I always love seeing people discover the magic that is Steve Perry for the first time.
Mother Father and Still they Ride are bangers!
I love still they ride. Song is beyond incredible
Still They Ride is my favorite of theirs.
Chills every time
This gives me an EARGASM everytime, or just might as well say EVERY TIME iI hear him sing!!! ❤❤❤ They were awesome in concert, I saw them in 81.
Eargasm Lol😂😂
My favorite Journey track is "Lights." It's about San Francisco. Beautiful, beautiful track. I'd love it if you chose it for a reaction.
Great song! It was originally written about Los Angeles and the original line was "'when the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on LA."
@@erinhansen2110 .. Yes, it was. They changed it to "The City" as that is where they were formed originally (SF)
YES!! ME TOO!!❤❤❤❤
@@ausfuhrpramienjagar They changed it "the sun shines on the "BAY".
@@PUGZ-n-STITCHES .. Yes, I know, because they are from SF. When they refer to "when the lights go down" in the city and the sun shines on the bay, they are referring to when at sunset, all the lights that have been on in the high rise buildings of downtown SF and visible through the windows from a long ways away, giving it the city's beautiful skyline at night, are slowly going dimmer as the sun shines on the bay at sunrise. If you live here, you surely know what I'm talking about..
He's an anomaly! You feel it! Welcome to the club!
No other voice like Steve Perry!!! Love him!!!
80’s music was so amazing and authentic! Best voice EVER!!! Back when musicians actually had talent!!!
Love, love, love Steve Perry & the Journey! He can sing high notes!!!
That song Still gives me Goosebumps some 40+ years later❤
No one compares to that Voice.
Not to mention he's 🔥
