it's funny how people refuse to watch Journey today because he's not the lead singer. Having seen them twice with the current lead singer, I don't Steve, or anyone at his age would sound as good.
From what I've read and heard, Steve was in a relationship with Sherrie Stafford until the Raised on Radio album. Jonathan Cain himself said that Sherrie was very difficult to be around, all doom and gloom, was how he put it. She would get into arguments not only with Steve, but also with the other band members' wives and girlfriends. I believe to keep the peace, they traveled by themselves instead of with the rest of the band. Sherrie was very pretty, and apparently Steve loved her, but she seemed to have a jealous, fiery personality. As they say, love is blind.
I see why I fell in love with his music in the 80s; not only is he a phenomenal singer, he is a class act! Thank you for posting this. Journey is still one of my main playlist after almost 40 years.

Did you even listen to what he said? He said he lost the passion for music, the only way for him to be semi-interested in music was to party - resulting in substance usage. He became frustrated with everything, soon his voice began to suffer as a result of substance usage, then decided it's time to stop everything and go away.

I met Steve at Disneyland!! He was so polite and friendly!!! I am so grateful Kelly made Steve realize that his life had meaning by just being Steve!!! I am glad Steve has been making music his way now!!! I will love his voice forever!!! 💜
He sat in the box behind me at a Hollywood Bowl concert last summer (the show was John Williams with LA Philharmonic). He was there by himself but walked around before the show and chatted with friends who were seated nearby. He looked great. Much older and with grey hair, but still very recognizable. I snapped a picture when he was standing next to me but I didn't say anything to him. I didn't want to ruin his night. It was enough just to see him.
I met him before a concert in LA. He asked if I was going to the concert and my friend insulted him. My mouth was open when I realized who he was and told her as he approached. She didn't believe who he was and was rude. He walked away. I wish I could have apologized to him and told him that the person I was with was no longer my friend after that day. She was SO rude and condescending, he didn't waste another breath on us. I saw him in concert three times, including the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. I wish I could see him one more time!

@@DebKeyworth When Paul was younger, I assume a lot of those interviews were with "entertainment" journalists, who don't get as much opportunity to ask mature questions. Just quick sound bites for MTV or _Entertainment Tonight,_ amidst a whirlwind of rockstar activities. And hopefully it gets easier to speak thoughtfully about one's life with seven decades of hindsight.
Crazy we never got to see interviews with stars unless it was local TV station per se. We had a fantastic Music TV show up here in Toronto called The New Music and they would do such interviews. If you didn’t see them the first time you were out of luck
I met Steve Perry a couple of times during the 80’s when I was working for United and he would fly out of Fresno to San Fran after visiting his family in the Central Valley. A very nice guy who is an incredible talent. Thank you Steve Perry and Journey for so much great music.
@@themachine8009 He might have had one or access to one but this was the 80’s so not sure that was common. He definitely flew commercial on some occasions, at least back and forth between the Central Valley and (I believe) San Fran (he might have also gone from Fresno to SoCal).
I love this interview. This is the real Steve Perry, not the persona you see on stage. I could tell he was holding back tears when talking about his relatives and his love that passed.
@DUNGSTA I don't think Steve never had those problems. Drinking problems, yes, he had kind of struggled with that during his last tenure of the band height of success but he wasn't a full blown alcoholic. What really damage Steve mentally besides legal issue with his band was the separation from his girlfriend in the 80s, his mother's death, and his wife passing. That's the three things that affected Steve the most.
Steve Perry is a real man who has lived life on his terms. At the time he left Journey we were in shock, and could not understand. I am glad he met this beautiful woman as she helped him sort out his feelings. It makes me sad that he only had her for such a short time. Stay true to your feelings Steve, we will always love you.
Came for the tea but ended up with tissues. Didn't expect that. So many youthful memories have their soundtrack scored by Steve, Neil, Jonathon, Steve, Ross, Greg and the others, and I'll forever be grateful.
Steve's band members are a bunch selfish dick. All they want is money and when Steve is down, they don't even support him. What I am talking about is today current Journey band. Arnel Pineda is nowhere close to Steve voice. Arnel Pineda is just a copycat of Steve.
I greatly admire this great singers honesty. He has nothing to prove to anyone, and has survived the pitfalls of fame. Wish him all the best. Much love and respect.
One of my good friends was a close friend of Kellie Nash. About 10 years ago she told me about Steve and Kellie, their relationship, and how Steve was there for Kellie no matter what. It’s great to see this interview and hear about his relationship directly from Steve.
Steve Perry's special talent was his passion that translated into his vocals. This is what separated him from anyone else who tried to come close to his sound.
"I'm cryin' for lonely tears of clowns' from the Departure album. Steve's voice made notes here that no male or even female singer could ever hope to pull off.
He was my neighbor down the street when I was a teenager (late 70s, early 80s). I knew he was in Journey but we never talked about it. We would just say hi and talk about nothing important at all when I'd see him from time to time. Totally down to earth and always friendly to me. Would be curious if he remembers any of that
@jerryrice2752Aloha. That’s where I met him in ‘95. Registered under Jose Garcia. Said I used to listen to him, he replied, so did I. Super humble, wish him well.
When he talks about meeting that woman and feeling so connected he met his twin flame. Someone who makes you feel more connected to yourself by knowing them. It’s a very strange but beautiful thing. I met one of these people recently . We are not lovers which has been extremely challenging for me. But at the same time it’s a completely pure friendship I didn’t know I could have. She’s brought out a stagnant energy and got my spirit excited again. We are great partners in work and friendship and it’s truly changed my life ❤
That is a man who is a true human being. Who understands his fears, and deals with them on a level that many of us try to bury. I wish the best for Steven Perry and thank you for your openness, and courage, along with the music you shared with us all...
The enduring irony of Steve Perry is that his own incredible talent plus the very people who adore him to this day, helped create the expectations and stress that eventually wore him out.
This interview was done on April 16, 2019. All I can say is Wow. He is so magnetic. This story was poignant and moving. He loves so deeply. I pray he finds love again and stays out of isolation. His voice and music are the soundtrack of my life, since I was a teen. Thank you so much for your gift, Steve Perry!
Michael Jackson was probably just as good. The two of them made it seem so effortless. The other stars seemed to struggle with their brief lines, but Michael and Steve stepped up and nailed their parts without overthinking it. They had confidence in their abilities.
Steve I’m glad you kept your promise. From one isolationist to another, isolation is our way to control the narrative to not be stressed or hurt. It serves no one not even ourselves. Love and blessings, Sandy Far Northern California
What a cool interview. I ride motorcycles and one of my favorite tunes to listen to while riding is Wheel in the Sky. Journey was always being played on the radio while I was as growing up. I've always thought Steve Perry was awesome but this interview cements that. Total class act and very well spoken.
Well, if they need to walk away, then definitely. Some, like Tony Bennett, just wanted to, and did, sing right up to the end because he really seemed to like it. Plus, maybe we (the fans, the audience) should be honest with ourselves too.The funny thing is, is any of what happens off the stage, or after the director yells cut, really any of our business? When we "celebrity" all of those famous people, and it removes some of their humanity, puts a wall up between them and the rest of the world, then, who is to blame? The artist, the singer, the actor, the writer, the entrepreneur, the director, the mogul, the model, those we turned into a celebrity or the rest of us regular folks? It is a conundrum and its hard to figure out why we've been doing it for ages.
The late Burt Bacharach was still co-writing great songs in his 90s. He co-wrote the great love song "Always" with Richard Marx, which is on Marx's "Songwriter" album. Ann Wilson, in recent years did a duet with Disturbed's lead singer David Draiman, on the song "Don't Tell Me". The music video has more than 7 million views on TH-cam. Billy Joel recently released a new song that he performed on the Grammy's that has more than 5 million views. Dennis DeYoung released a great album a few years ago called "26 East, vol. 1". I consider it a 5-star album. His singing voice still sounded quite good on it. Celine Dion sang the song "Ashes" (which was co-written by a Voice winner) for the Deadpool 2 movie back in 2018. The music video has more than 130 million views on TH-cam. She was around 50 when she recorded it and still had her big, powerful voice. Singers/groups in their 50s, 60s, and 70s can still put out great new music. Songwriting ability doesn't really go away unless a songwriter has a cognitive illness. A singer's voice might not last into their 70s. But some singers do still sound very good in their 70s: Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar, Dennis DeYoung, Gladys Knight, etc. Bob Seger is retired now. But he still sounded good on his last album released when he was in his early 70s. Seger also had a platinum album, "Face the Promise" when he was around 60/61 years old. The 91-year-old Willie Nelson puts out a new album every year. Sometimes two albums a year.

As others have stated I have left this interview with tears and profound respect for Steve Perry. I also enjoyed his music, seeing him on his first tour with Journey. This brief video peeled back layers of the man's soul. The loss of his mother still pains him, the greatest love he had with Kelly was brief but powerful. Great interview.
@@Wafaloo Lawsuit, Johnathan Cain is suing the Neil Schon. It really seems like Schon is the root cause of a lot of problems with the band more so where as they use to blame Perry, but I think Perry is just a very sensitive person and Schon just wants to live the rock star life beyond what is sensible spending too much of the bands money and I believe that is part of the lawsuit.
@@buckjones4901 i think when steve left the band the second time all because he didn't want to rush having a hip surgery. the band accused him of holding them back but now i realized he got tired of being pushed to do this and that as it wasn't fun anymore. look at that band now. the cause of this is cain and schon. they are married to the worst women in the world. cain to an evangelical lunatic. schon to a materialist. that band is DONE. i do wish steve perry well. he seems to be enjoying life these days.

Whenever any of my vocals students want to sing a Steve Perry song I say something along the lines of, "Come on, why do you want to try to sing a song with such a huge range? Literally no one can sing like Steve Perry!" He was off the charts good. So great to see such a thoughtful interview that came out in 2019.
It’s a crazy thing. singing at that range every night eventually takes a toll. You get tired, really tired. And one day you go to sing and it just isn’t quite there like it used to be. That’s when it gets tough hard thing to deal with more than people realize. So you have to be good with what you’ve done be with your grandchildren and pets❤️
He doesn’t have to justify anything to me . One of the GOATs. I would never pretend I could walk in another mans shoes. I can’t imagine being a lead singer. Especially as you get older. I could totally see being in a band forever on an instrument. Springsteen was playing down in Philly the other night and he’s like 75 plus . I could never be ready to play nightly past 35 years old . I don’t know how these guys do it . I just hope he’s happy 😃 genuinely . His music lasts forever . I listen to it all the time , ,,,
He's so lucky to have been able to know when it was time to end his singing career, and be happy with his decision. And what a second stroke of luck to be able to find such a great love, which will probably remain alive in his heart the rest of his life.
There will never be as good of a singer in rock ‘n’ roll as Steve Perry. He is the best of the best, no copycat karaoke singer in the world will ever compare. Didn’t stay for the show because Steve Perry was Journey. There will never be another that compares. ❤
Journey was never the same after Steve Perry left the band. A friend brought over a new Journey CD and I didn't care for it. Still listen to their older albums though.❤️
Steve, this interview made me cry. I have always loved your music, the emotion you put into every song. Hearing you share of the love you had with such a wonderful woman brought back memories of my husband. Thank you for sharing your story. You are one of my absolute favorite singers.
Steve Perry voice takes you to another dimension. I got to attend the last JOURNEY CONCERT. I also got to see Steve Perry sing solo at The Brady Theater in Tulsa OK. He walked through the audience and he shook my hand. ❤
This was great. He is my all time favorite singer. In past interviews he Blamed the breaking up of journey on other people, but this time he really opened up and took responsibility.
The best Journey song is Feeling That Way. Had both Steve Perry and Greg Rolie on vocals. A perfect example of what Journey was and what it was going to be in one song.
I was glad to come onto this video. Steve Perry I wish you all the love , happiness, peace and the bestest adventures for you. ❤ Thank you for the music and the interview. ❤
I think you meant, "Please do not be sad when I am gone". My wife and I are going through this right now. Her mother passed away two weeks ago at 93. Long, very good life. But she told her daughter that she did not want a funeral with a bunch of sad people sitting around crying. She wants us to have a party to celebrate her life, and that is exactly what we are planning at this very moment.

Steve Perry, like the legend Neil Peart, are introverted people and such brilliant musicians that when they’re absent from our lives it leaves a huge hole. Steve is and will remain one of the greatest voices in music period. His voice and his choice to step away, much like Neil, are something that no common person can comprehend. Stardom and money and fame must be incredible but personally I can imagine that certain people that love music and their own freedoms could have a very hard time being bound to that lifestyle for a very long time.
At the very top of my all time favorite vocalist and people. Steve is a sincere soulful person with passion. Saw Journey with Steve 5 times and Steve solo at the Fox Theater in ATL. So much enjoyed these shows. Thank you Steve. You are a bright star in a beautiful world.
Steve really did make the wise choice to leave at the height of his career like that. Got in, made some of the greatest rock albums, then walked away when he realized the lifestyle was no longer for him. Very few people have the fortitude to do something like that. No job is worth your health and well-being. Even Steve knew that.

@@cyn4476 I saw him a few times also!!!! I’d love to see him on his own in a more intimate setting, beautiful ballads that carry all through the night!

I’m 52. This is the first time I’ve ever heard Steve Perry have an adult conversation. Good for him. Health and happiness, Steve…☀️
ditto
What were his other conversations? Childlike ? Or you mean instead of singing ?
Curious about the adult convos...was he speaking in a childish manner? I think hes just coming clean with his true heart.
I just hope Steve is truly happy. He sure brought millions of us joy for many years.
I met Steve Perry a couple of times during the 80’s when I was working for United and he would fly out of Fresno to San Fran after visiting his family in the Central Valley. A very nice guy who is an incredible talent. Thank you Steve Perry and Journey for so much great music.
Thought he had a private jet
@@themachine8009 He might have had one or access to one but this was the 80’s so not sure that was common. He definitely flew commercial on some occasions, at least back and forth between the Central Valley and (I believe) San Fran (he might have also gone from Fresno to SoCal).
Amen. So sincere. Much love. May he get back all that he gave.
Thanks Steve, for making music that ties so many good memories together. You were a big part of us growing up.
Without a doubt!❤
I love this interview. This is the real Steve Perry, not the persona you see on stage. I could tell he was holding back tears when talking about his relatives and his love that passed.
I like how he didn't talk much about the drugs and women.
When do we see him on stage?
kind of a boring
He was and still is so beautiful. This interview makes me think, we knows little about our fine artists.....
When I was a young man watching AC/DC open for them in 1979 I had no clue what I was watching. I was in awe but had no idea.
Pull yourself together soldier
Steve's band members are a bunch selfish dick. All they want is money and when Steve is down, they don't even support him. What I am talking about is today current Journey band. Arnel Pineda is nowhere close to Steve voice. Arnel Pineda is just a copycat of Steve.
Okay but the expression is "spill the beans."

Steve Perry’s voice takes me to a very magical place in my heart and mind. He’s a beautiful soul and god bless him. Love you Steve ❤
He gave SO MUCH in his music, his voice represents a huge portion of my life. I simply love this man!
It's so great that Steve gave that lady a wonderful love at the end of her life.
Ooh, I am 66 years old and have loved Steve Perry forever. Such class and a lifetime of memories when I was younger.
Steve Perry's special talent was his passion that translated into his vocals. This is what separated him from anyone else who tried to come close to his sound.
"When the lights go down in the city" The most beautiful rock and roll song IMHO.

He was my neighbor down the street when I was a teenager (late 70s, early 80s). I knew he was in Journey but we never talked about it. A better man than singer. He’s living right.
I've loved you my whole life, Steve Perry. ❤
Achieving balance is difficult, even for those at the top.
OMG...you beautiful man! I had NO idea of any of this. You are a RARE gem! What a tribute to this wonderful lady that loved you soooooo much!
One of the best and most iconic voices not just in rock but music in general!
Powerful male voice of a generation. If you disagree watch the making of, "We Are The World." He blew everybody out of that room.

Me too. I actually feel the same about Steve Smith.
No, it's not the same. Have heard one or two songs, if that.
What a cool interview. I ride motorcycles and one of my favorite tunes to listen to while riding is Wheel in the Sky. Journey was always being played on the radio while I was as growing up. I've always thought Steve Perry was awesome but this interview cements that. Total class act and very well spoken.
A great message saying that you don't have to be the same thing for your whole life. You can change directions You can do anything.
If only more artists were this honest with themselves and their fans. Walk away on top.
Those days are long past

@@Wafaloo Lawsuit, Johnathan Cain is suing the Neil Schon. It really seems like Schon is the root cause of a lot of problems with the band more so where as they use to blame Perry, but I think Perry is just a very sensitive person and Schon just wants to live the rock star life beyond what is sensible spending too much of the bands money and I believe that is part of the lawsuit.

It just f*cks with my head that I listened to Journey 40 years ago. Makes me sad actually.
Classic voice. 1000 years from now, his songs will be sung. Loyal SF Giants fan.
Steve really did make the wise choice to leave at the height of his career like that. Got in, made some of the greatest rock albums, then walked away when he realized the lifestyle was no longer for him. Very few people have the fortitude to do something like that.
No job is worth your health and well-being. Even Steve knew that.
