I miss the 360 era so much. It was peak gaming. Gaming needs a revolution. Games utilized gameplay mechanics that have proven to be timeless. Devs were like, It's a game, will get right to the point & focus on doing what u want really well. Modern Console libraries are lacking selection & quality so much. Devs should never stop taking inspiration from previous game gens. Timeless games don't need hyper realistic graphics. Some of the best games have unique art styles. Anytime i say this someone in the comments always says: "umm well we have indie games" but my point is we need these kind of game selection on CONSOLES as well. PC's have steam & tons of access to a unique library of creative projects. Look at the Game Library of the most recent game consoles? Now look at previous generation consoles? There's no competition. It's not even close to the PS2, N64, PS1, Xbox, GameCube, Dreamcast, 360, PS3, etc. If game devs & game companies realize they are wasting such insane amounts of $ & time to make a game that still runs so terribly (no matter if u have the best PC possible. Which proves it's how these games were made. Not the tech hardware needing a upgrade. I bet we haven't even come close to pushing modern hardware to it's limits yet) *So if devs & companies can see the benefit of them taking inspiration from previous game generation designs, they might realize it wouldn't take so long to make a game, it wouldn't cost so much money to make EACH GAME. Give these things a chance to prove they are capable of being timeless. Hopefully we see a resurgence of pure nerdy passion & focus from devs if they are allowed to just focus on smaller passion projects. Especially with today's technological advancements. Previous games should still inspire newer games no matter how far into the future we go. We shouldn't leave those unique aspects of gaming universe in the past. Hopefully the struggles of the modern day triple AAA games will organically shift change back towards a better direction. I just worry about the gaming industry being at a certain point where people who are severely out of touch with the core gaming community are the ones that are making the most decisions and forcing devs to do things they completely don't want to do because they know it's a bad idea.. I wish we didn't have so many game companies get bought out. I miss when a game was a project worked on by a group of passionate people who decided they wanted to create this passion project.. Now it's like a popular underground band getting bought out by a mega Corp and now they have full say in the way they play music and when they play music and what they say in their music.. I hope gaming snaps out of this dark chapter and they find their roots they left in the wake of the Y2K era..
Holy moly. I didn’t even realize this is the review nitch I needed in my life. You are sooooo right. Keep being you TechDweeb. You are quickly becoming one of my favorite TH-camrs.
That's why I now play retro and Indie games. Even though I don't have a console or a PC but I can honestly say that Indie and retro games are just fun! No overlapping cinematics, dragged on load times, non sensical huge updates, stupid DLCs, and micro transactions. We can still get immersive experiences on retro and Indie games without frustrating you and saves you some money. 👌
I LOVE indie games, because of your videos I pretty much play botvice everytime I have a short timespan to play and want some immediate action. The only AAA games I want to play nowadays are from the ps3 era (borderlands, bioshock, batman, etctera), probably because it was my last console, so i'm slowly buying those games when there is a sale on my country. Also I got to know more and more indie games after I watched your channel and Clemmy from Best Indie Games youtube channel, my wishlist inflated like a ballon and keeps expanding 🤣🤣
When games have budgets, I think a lot of people forget where that money goes, it's for paying for labour (now whether that labour money is going into the pockets of the people actually working on the game is another point, again leadership), people are THE most expensive aspect of any production, so just having loads of money isn't going to improve anything. It's more that it gives companies more time if the company is being managed adequately. So then its a question of leadership. Money is just a resource like anything else and has to be managed accordingly. Just having loads of it isn't going to equal into a better product.
i haven’t played any of the AAA garbage in years. (except one or two nintendo games) I am very vulnerable with my adhd to all the micro transaction bs. And i haven’t regretted it the last 5 years or longer. Play Indie games, they are beautiful art!
i rarely comment, but, i have to say, because of you i bought a RX6400, once i get her running, i could not believe in my eyes. it is a good GPU, so, thanks.
I misheard you saying: "...Iris Sexy Graphics." 🤣 Noticed most of the presented games to play on my SD. Also this reminded me of one game I want to add to the list because its deeply touching: "This War of Mine". Check it out. You wont regret having it in your library. Love ❤️
I own an INDIE studio, and even though I use the term I don't really like it because in the end it doesn't make much sense, the gaming industry started with executives and millions of investments? ofc no, It was always a crazy guy or some friends creating games and conquering the world, even the AAA companies that many of us hate started like this, so Indie games are not something new, they are what they have always been... the pure and true gaming industry.
I found a game that came out three years ago, which I never heard of until now. It’s called DungeonTop and cost a mere $13-ish. Steam, PS4, and Switch. A perfect example of what you’re talking about. I don’t even touch AAA games anymore.
Some nice recommendations! And yeah, love me some Balatro. I think with "triple A" games or high budget games, it's mostly some of the western RPGs that can be hit or miss lately. But on the JRPG side, although the story trope can be repetitive at times, the quality of the higher budget series like Final Fantasy, Persona, Xenoblade Chronicles etc, are consistently high. You should give them a shot if you haven't already.
Theres only one thing indie developers have more of than big companies, and thats passion for the game they are making. The only big company where you can still see a bit of passion for their work is nintendo but unfortunately they dont create new IPs like other companies do.
you're now responsible of the n-th enlargment of my wishlist ahahah Btw this time i pushed the subscribe button! Hope you make even more videos like this one
While they're not for everyone, I'd argue Nintendo is a AAA company and many of their games are very good. Unfortunately companies like Microsoft, Sony, etc. have looked at the success of the Switch and only seen it as a sign that there's still a market for handhelds, rather than seeing how prioritizing enjoyable gameplay experiences leads to success / profit.
Halls of Torment and Balatro are among my addictions. But I might try some of your other suggestions! I also love survivorslikes and indie games in general.
I work in indie games, and while there is amazing stuff coming out its not correct to say indie games are flourishing. To run an indie studio, you either need to borrow money from a venture capitalist, publisher, etc, and getting that kind of investment is almost impossible right now. Only the studios already funded, or people independently wealthy are able to continue at this moment, a lot of others are shutting their doors or going out of business as we speak. I have heard of a few miracles happening but its going to take a while for the money men to loosen up and start funding games again.
Nice video, man!👌👍 Im so excited for me to become a indie game developer, and start making some bad-ass/edgy, awesome games independently in the future!🤩 Also, not every triple AAA game is hot garbage. There are some good triple AAA games like Super Mario Brothers Wonder for a example. The best part about Super Mario Brothers Wonder is that the developers of Nintendo decides to start taking their time without any deadlines for Super Mario Brothers Wonder. God, I hope the developers of Nintendo (including the developers of Splatoon) decides to start making awesome games again without any deadlines like how they did with Super Mario Brothers Wonder. Other than that, reject triple AAA gaming, and embrace indie and AA gaming.
Indie games really are better in most cases. It's rare that I find any AAA games appealing. But then, that's true for almost anything. Regular people doing what they like usually produces a better result than big corporations doing whatever they think is most profitable.
I have been enjoying BallisticNG a lot recently, can't recommend it enough for anyone who likes a fast racing game! Also a lot of Balatro of course. Just bough Halls of Torment to try it on the deck later.

Was never a fan of the DS when I had it. I tried putting 3DS but Citra is dead. Didn’t bother afterwards. No PS3 as I hear they usually don’t launch at all unlike on the ROG Ally and Legion Go. No need to include Wii U because the Switch already has the best ports from it. I own Resident Evil 1 & 2 on my PS1 and RE4 on my Switch but I never got into that series. I have a few doubles of the same game. Like I have NBA Street Vol. 2 for both GameCube and Xbox. The Xbox version is the one I owned. It’s the best-looking one and it loads faster during the intro. But I kept the GameCube version because Dolphin is the more mature emulator and it’s more battery efficient than Xemu. I also have the SNES and MAME version of Mortal Kombat II. The SNES port is the one I owned and mastered playing. OG Xbox is an interesting console to emulate. It was the most powerful of the 6th generation with graphics still holding up 20 years later. But it has the weakest library between it, DC, PS2, and GCN. Hence, why Xbox emulation is behind. I felt Xbox was what Sony promised to deliver with the PS2 but PS2 *technically* underdelivered. PS2 is the most popular, but it had some of the worst graphics of that four. Microsoft engineers defeated Sony in that gen with better specs. Not that PlayStation 2 was that weak. It matured by 2005. I’m playing Rogue Galaxy from 2007 and it definitely looks like the best-looking game on the console. I doubt Dreamcast could run God of War and Rogue Galaxy at 60 fps when it could barely handle Shenmue II. PS2 was very much like Sega Saturn where it had this hidden potential to make beautiful games but it was difficult to develop for. Saturn is the one I can’t run. Another complicated console to develop for similar to PS2 and PS3 but far less popular. No concise tutorials for it on TH-cam and I’m clueless how to use CHDMAN. I may skip that one like I will with NDS. I never grew up owning a Saturn, so I don’t have nostalgia for it. I barely bought it in 2004 at a GameCrazy and rarely used it. I only want to play obscure 2D platformers like Super Tempo and Tryrush Deppy but it’s no big deal if I can’t play them. MAME is very hit or miss. Can’t seem to run the Model 2, 3, and NAOMI games. Can’t even launch any Street Fighter II game or Tekken Tag. But it can run Mortal Kombat I & II and NBA Jam & TE just fine which was the opposite experience with my Vita. My Vita plays the arcade version of Super Street Fighter II perfectly but can’t play the Midway classics. I do have some stinkers like WWF Wrestlemania, The Adventures of Bayou Billy and The Karate Kid on NES. But I did own Bayou Billy and remember beating The Karate Kid many times circa 1989-1990. One of the easiest games to beat similar to Kung Fu. Since most NES games are under a megabyte, it’s easier not to be picky. If it has some childhood attachment to me, I’ll download it even if the game is awful. Steam Deck is the GOAT, folks. Can play almost every generation and for under $300 if you look at the used market. Odin 2 can’t play Wii U or any recent AAA titles like FFVII Remake and Elden Ring. Steam Deck is the perfect balance of performance, price, ecosystem, and support. It’s the best gaming device I’ve ever owned. I’m only gaming on handhelds for the rest of my life. All-Time Favorite Gaming Devices 1. Steam Deck 2. PS Vita 3. Switch 4. PSP 5. PlayStation 6. Dreamcast 7. PlayStation 2 8. Super NES 9. GameCube 10. Genesis 11. NES 12. Wii All-Time Favorite Games 1. Super Street Fighter II (MAME) 11. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 12. Final Fantasy X *PS5* *Pro* I don’t need it or any console that’s tethered to a TV. AAA titles are dying. They’re becoming too expensive and too long to make. With all that power, you want AAA titles coming out every 10 years? Since the PS4/Xbone era, we don’t have limitations coming from hardware like previous gens. The limitations are coming from the man power and budget. Do developers want to spend at least 5 years making one AAA game? Console era is over. Every game system from here on out should be portable. Then I expect companies like Microsoft and Sony to be gatekeepers to their library like Valve. Most games will move to the cloud and subscription based. If you see my list of titles on my Deck, you can see I’m allergic to many modern games in Gen 7-9. I hate first-person shooters. Very few modern games I would consider fun. It’s more boring and complicated. I’m in Chapter 14 in FF7R and I don’t love it as much as the OG. There are a lot of meandering scenes and padding to the gameplay. Beautiful to look at. Not as fun to play. This is my problem with most AAA titles after Gen 6. True, they look good to look at. Give me Tifa with the graphical power we have now compared to 1997. But many of these games are also a burden and tedious to play. I read Red Dead Redemption II is a slogfest. 😴
I still fondly remember when Xbox started to do those "summer or arcade" or w/e it was called back on the 360, they put stuff like Castle Crashers on their store. That was the best thing to happen for gaming at the time, it's definitely paid off for us gamers. You know, getting the opportunity to find indies without hassle.
I have made Indy games a small part of my gaming Diet for a while now. I mostly started paying attention to them around the "new grounds" era and then again in the Xbox 360 era when "arcade" titles were a fun way of marketing smaller games and ports of OLDER arcade titles. Castle Crashers was a BIG hit on the 360 and now it's on basically everything. More recently, I have been enjoying hyperlight drifter, Tunic, and other great titles. Humble Bundle has been a GREAT source for keys for these types of games. GoG also.
I'm happy to say that I already "own" about a third of those with another third of them on my wishlist! It's funny to me that AAA (and AAAA 😆) games have fallen so far behind for me. There are very few worth playing these days, none of which seem to be ready at launch. Definitely rooting for team Indie! 💚
I've been extremely close to leaving AAA completely for a while now. I've already started with some of the biggest offenders, boycotting any EA or Ubisoft published titles. The whole AAA sector just reeks of corporate interference, and Suits are utterly bereft of creativity. Indies put the power back in the hands of the passionate and creative developers, and is the only real haven of gaming excellence available right now.
Switch actually has a great indie collection. I used to buy lots of them there, but I stopped when Nintendo closed the 3ds eShop (and I'm sure they'll do the same thing to the Switch shop someday too).

Agreed

I've been saying this for a LONG time. Video games are art, and when artists are free to pour their love into their work, it shows. \m/
Well said!

AAA now stands for "an awkward attempt" at a game
A lot of people who grew up with retro video games now have the technology or the knowledge to make the games they always wanted to play themselves, using new tools and techniques to make old looking games look incredible rather than trying to chase the uncanny valley that is AAA "realism".
I agree, the current game engines are more than powerful enough to make any games with PS1/early PS2 graphics.
Indie game not just better but Indie game is what games suppose to be.
100% agreed
Indies ARE the furture of gaming. AAA companies will slowly die off as the years role on. The biggest titles of last year and even this year arent AAA games. They are indie and AA games.
I agree a 100%. Indies and Retro ♥️
The indie scene really excites me -- more so than most "AAA" titles these days. We need more coverage on the gaming sites and channels!
Games are works of art, and for that reason, if a game is not made by artists it will not be a work of art. Just that simple.
A developer wouldn't be able to make games without artists, a AAA game is nothing more than a big budget game made by a large developer
Now days AAA companys like EA thinks that they can throw us the same garbage with a lot of microtransactions and DLC and we are going to accept it?. No sir.
I can buy 5-10 amazing indie games for the price of one bloated unfun AAA game. I'm happy for that tradeoff!
Ea sports has a 35 billion dollar net worth unfortunately not everyone feels the same way as you, seeing as they keep buying the newest games
@@TechDweeb I Say the same here!.
Good videos by the way and keep up the good work!
Sadly, too many sheeple keep supporting the DLC / microtranactions business model.
Unfortunately, most people are gladly accepting it, which is why we are where we are
Great video, and I agree with a lot of your choices! Indie games are amazing
One could say Indie games are all stuff and no fluff.
This guy could totally be a voice actor for cartoons or anime.
He's got a perfect voice for the nerdy sidekick, like Sly Cooper's friend Bentley.
This is the real deal. Indies make games while AAA gaming industry is making products.
So if a game attempts to make a profit then it's by definition not indie, right?

Triple A games are for corporate. Indie and retro games are for the gamer.
Chained Echoes is incredibly deep and well crafted for a single dev game. Add it to your list if you haven’t played it already.

Indie games that are passion projects tend to feel nostalgic.
Current AAA games are often too complex.

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite tech channels.
Thanks for saying so!
Thanks for the list of games. I found a few games and added them to my wishlist
Strafe has the GREATEST commercial of ALL TIME.
These games will be great for my Steam Deck. Thank you 😊
When games have budgets, I think a lot of people forget where that money goes, it's for paying for labour (now whether that labour money is going into the pockets of the people actually working on the game is another point, again leadership), people are THE most expensive aspect of any production, so just having loads of money isn't going to improve anything. It's more that it gives companies more time if the company is being managed adequately. So then its a question of leadership. Money is just a resource like anything else and has to be managed accordingly. Just having loads of it isn't going to equal into a better product.
Awesome video General Dweeb. So many hidden gems in the Indie Game space.
Inmost has an excellent soundtrack. I just love the sound in this game.
i haven’t played any of the AAA garbage in years. (except one or two nintendo games) I am very vulnerable with my adhd to all the micro transaction bs. And i haven’t regretted it the last 5 years or longer. Play Indie games, they are beautiful art!
Keep sharing the dank indie games with us lol I’m always looking for new fun ones
Chained Echoes, Broforce, Soulstone Survivors. Boom - thats easily 300 hours of pure fun right there!
INMOST!!! I freaking love this game the story is SOOOO touching. Great taste dood!
Now now, Skull and Bones is not triple A, it's the worlds first QUAD A game.
Fun Gameplay over fancy boring graphics !
i rarely comment, but, i have to say, because of you i bought a RX6400, once i get her running, i could not believe in my eyes. it is a good GPU, so, thanks.
Niiice! Glad you're enjoying it!
I misheard you saying: "...Iris Sexy Graphics." 🤣
Noticed most of the presented games to play on my SD. Also this reminded me of one game I want to add to the list because its deeply touching: "This War of Mine".
Check it out. You wont regret having it in your library. Love ❤️
Well they are that too
Did you just coin the term "Survivors-like" ? 😂😂😂 Found your channel today and I'm lovin' it!
Bullshit, good games are not indie, good games are not AAAA, good games are just good and damn how big or small the budget is.
I don't care anymore about western AAA, but japanese AAA are still great.
I looked into Archvale awhile ago and was pulled in with the description of Zelda and Enter the Gungeon. I loved this game.
I normally don’t review individual games too often but Balatro was so good that I HAD to spread the good poker word.
Keep spreading the good word buddy!
@@TechDweeb 🫡🫡🫡 and thanks for the amazing content, Mr. Dweeb!
100% agreed ,Indie are much Fun to play
Great list. Added a few to the old wishlist.
The only big company where you can still see a bit of passion for their work is nintendo but unfortunately they dont create new IPs like other companies do.
you're now responsible of the n-th enlargment of my wishlist ahahah
Btw this time i pushed the subscribe button! Hope you make even more videos like this one
Can’t have it said better. Thanks.
The people in your comments are very friendly.
Saved to my playlist, will definitely get some of these games when I get my hands on steam deck. thanks for the video.
Mother Russia Bleeds is a banger! Played the crap out of it with a lot of friends. They first say "nah" but then they end up buying it themselves
Off topic, but when is the next camping video coming? I really enjoy those!!
I've been subscribed for years now. Bow to my superior smartitude!
Usually I’m stupid but it’s a good thing I discovered you today so I clicked the subscribe button so I wouldn’t be stupid today!
The way the AAA games are heading Im even having second thoughts on buying Gta 6 when it comes out 😂
Nice video, man!👌👍
Im so excited for me to become a indie game developer, and start making some bad-ass/edgy, awesome games independently in the future!🤩
Also, not every triple AAA game is hot garbage.
Yeah it is a shame almost every aaa game just sucks now, good thing I've still got a massive backlog of aaa games from the last 20 years to play
My favorite retro indie is CrossCode. Big Secret of Mana vibes, but plays like a super modern version.
Indie games really are better in most cases. It's rare that I find any AAA games appealing. But then, that's true for almost anything. Regular people doing what they like usually produces a better result than big corporations doing whatever they think is most profitable.
How did I not know that Total Biscuit (John Bain) passed away... 😥... It's been 8 YEARS! I hope his family is ok, He is truly missed.
He was one of my favourites
I have been enjoying BallisticNG a lot recently, can't recommend it enough for anyone who likes a fast racing game!
Also a lot of Balatro of course. Just bough Halls of Torment to try it on the deck later.

The big omissions are no DS and 3DS.

I don’t need it or any console that’s tethered to a TV.
I still don't know why this channel doesn't have more subs
I still fondly remember when Xbox started to do those "summer or arcade" or w/e it was called back on the 360, they put stuff like Castle Crashers on their store. That was the best thing to happen for gaming at the time, it's definitely paid off for us gamers. You know, getting the opportunity to find indies without hassle.
My girlfriend told me that 1:53 last night I don't know why.
GoG also.
awesome video as always :)
couldn't find this PC in amazon CA, would you have any suggestion to fellow Canadians?
I'm a big fan of the 5700u mini PCs in terms of price:performance. This brand makes a good product - amzn.to/3vEavln
Fun video, really enjoyed it. Especially since I’m in the market for a mini PC to play indies on. Keep up the awesome work on your channel
these recommendations include a lot of things I've not heard of before. Scratch that, I don't remember hearing about any of these. Wishlisting.
I subscribed. You had me at “stupid” 😂
The following games are also on Switch:
Archvale
Balatro
Blazing Chrome
Inmost
Slipstream
Wizorb
Everhood
Mother Russia Bleeds
Switch actually has a great indie collection. I used to buy lots of them there, but I stopped when Nintendo closed the 3ds eShop (and I'm sure they'll do the same thing to the Switch shop someday too).
@@TechDweeb The only thing I don't like about the Switch is the Nintendo part.
This guy is funny and to the point, something you never see, sub to him
I love the new ranking system man, you should use on other reviews
What are the list of games from the intro (0:37-1:11)? Especially the food cooking game! (But all of them looked great. I’m really curious)
