I've had the Legion 5i RTX 3070TI 32gb for around a year now (got it at an amazing £1,200!) and it's been the best gaming laptop I've ever owned. I previously had a Dell GTX 2080 laptop and it was great, but I much prefer the build quality and keyboard layout of the legion. I'm really glad they have kept to this design for the 7i. I originally bought up the 5i in anticipation of Starfield (I really want to play it at 60fps 1440p and high settings, not ultra, just high will do!) but I'm actually considering selling it now and picking up the 7i just to be doubly sure I can get that fps and resolution (that Starfield Deep Dive video got me worried!). I think I'm an idiot ;) Anyway, thanks for the video, was really informative :)
Glad you enjoyed. Don't forget to sub up if you haven't already. I'm between Dell/Alienware and Lenovo Legion. Honestly I don't think any other laptop really comes close to the overall build quality and value that you get. Plus, they have tons of sales and discounts throughout the year so if you're watchful you can grab a bargain. That said, I'm also very excited to play Starfield. It's been ages since I played Skyrim and I want a return to that Bethesda open world RPG formula.
I am still looking forward for your video on thermal management using vantage (or intel xtu). The intel processors are super fast but also produce a lot of heat. I have found another turnaround with intel XTU (under advanced tuning) Turbo boost short power max enable and turbo boost power max set to 40 watt (for me this wattage works like a sweet spot for games and usage). This doesn't completely stop boosting but kinda underpowers it giving much better cpu temperature control. Try it out.
I hope you find this video helpful. th-cam.com/video/QiA2vSnRJp4/w-d-xo.html. I've covered as much as I could on undervolt, performance, fan curves in as compressed a format as I could. As always feedback is much appreciated.
@@techknowlux totally!!! Used your vantage settings and now the temps are under 70 degs for both CPU and GPU on ultra settings on most games!! Thank you so much buddy and I hope your channel picks up with the quality and deep reviews and tweaks you're providing to your audience!!! 😊
Are you planning to review the Strix G16? Coz I'm keen to know the battery life. Notebook Check Reviews said it got 9 hours which is kinda hard to believe.
Yes but 9 hours doing what? If you look at their battery life testing method, and most tech outlets do the same thing, it’s nine hours just web surfing. Not realistic in my opinion. My estimates are based on actual, real world usage and can vary a lot that’s why I usually give a range. Any real world use on the Strix G16 I would put in a ballpark figure between 3.5-5 hours for real work in a mixed use scenario.
Was the battery testing done by leaving it in the Performance profile, or did you manually do tweaks? When I leave mine in the Performance profile, unplugged, confirmed NVIDIA GPU is turned off, Windows only estimated about 2 hours of battery life at 80% remaining, just sitting at the desktop with Chrome open. This is before I boot up Android Studio or anything like that...
I always do all battery testing in the battery saver mode for each laptop as well as Windows Battery Saver mode enabled, brightness at 50% (usually with a few exceptions) and mixed use coding, VS Code, WSL, Ubuntu, Powershell, IntelliJ, Slack, Google Chrome, Firefox and Brave as my browsers plus Docker and a dozen or so containers running. I saw between 3.5 - 5 hours of battery life doing this. More closer to 4-5 hours though. You shouldn't need to spend too much time tweaking manually in my opinion. Then again, Android Studio might be more of a battery hog. Chrome for sure is. I try to only have one tab open in Chrome for debugging and shut down when not using it.
Hello brother Which one do you suggest between lenovo legion pro 7i rtx 4090 Vs Hp omen 17 rtx 4090 I could really use your help . Is the legion worth 300 more dollars?
Legion 7i. Better screen, better build quality, better resale, more refined. But runs hotter due to 16". Omen is larger screen 17" but a bit better cooled but dated design and worse screen.
Hi! If I buy that kind of top spec gaming laptop and like to use for video randering and photo editoring. This is where we good choice or buying work station with RTX A5000 ?
I have not tested the A5000 series but they're very similar to the RTX at silicon level. Alternatively you couldn switch up to studio drivers if productivity is your main focus.
WTF Lenovo. I had to go to the spec sheet and double-check. I had to go to the full spec sheet since on the marketing/order page there's no detail about it. It felt very smooth and glides very well though. The full spec-sheet states that it's a "Buttonless Mylar® surface multi-touch touchpad". Thanks for pointing this out. I'll add a correction to the video and fix the specs.
Hi recently got the Legion with the same specs as you have you reviewed and connected with LG UltraGear 34GP83A-B 34" 21:9 Curved 144 Hz Adaptive-Sync G-Sync capable of 3440 X 1440 via HDMI to Display port 4K. Previous setup was X1 Yoga Gen 3 with Aorus eGPU gaming box GTX 1080 and was getting 3440 * 1440 now am only getting 1080P. My drivers are up to date. The only diff with previous setup was using the USB C thunderbolt connection to Aorus egPU and then Display port to the monitor. Now its HDMI to Display Port to monitor and that is supposed to give 4K so why is my max resolution still showing 1920 * 1080P?
Avoid using adapters or conversions because they're dependent on the cable. Try to go from HDMI to HDMI or DisplayPort to DisplayPort wherever possible. The Legion Pro 7i can do 4K up to 120Hz over the HDMI port but you'll need a matching cable that's rated to carry this connection. So many cables sold are mislabeled as to what the resolution they support and which version of HDMI and DisplayPort signals they carry.
We had 200w gpu's in 2020. If the cooling and designs are so much better, why tap out at a measely 175w? Are oem's regressing in design? Is nvidia admitting they're incapable of making higher wattage gpu's?
Its not just nvidia. It's a whole lot of system that have to come together to make these gaming laptops happen. Thermal and power constraints are the biggest factor in getting more performance. Perhaps they realized that 200W was nearly impossible to optimize and there is better optimization curve at 175W.
@@techknowlux Currently, the mobile 4090 is barely faster than the mobile 4080 at the same 175w (they don't even get to use 175w due to dynamic boost). So clearly it needs more power. Asus had the studio proart with a 200w rtx 6000 quadro GPU (same die as the 2080ti) with a 384bit bus and 24gb of vram. Yes, the laptop costed $10k, BUT alot of that was due to the quadro GPU and its 4k 120hz OLED display. It weighed just 3kg and had a 300w brick to power a 200w GPU and 35w i9 9980HK. Are you telling me that 3 years later, with $4000 to $5000 18' gaming laptops, OEM's and nvidia cannot cool the same 200w and pair it with a efficient ryzen 7840HS 35 to 45w chip on a 330w brick? Infact, if you keep the same 35w for the CPU (and you know how efficient laptop CPU's are), you can shove 230w of power to the GPU, which'd be enough for a desktop 4090. At 230w it'd be within roughly 15% of the desktop 4090, much faster than the current laptop 4090. I hope you see my point, right? Your thermal and power constraints don't make sense here. They literally cooled more in the past.
Either will kick some serious butt. If you want crazy amounts of power then the AMD is the better choice. If you don't have an option or can't find one in your region, then either will not let you down.
If you can, go with DP cable as it can push higher frame rates and higher resolutions. But in a pinch Thunderbolt 4 is not a bad option as long as you're not planning to power it over Thunderbolt 4 and game at the same time.
this has been on and off sale at B&H along with the 4080 version, $2300 and $2800 usd respectively, I've been dealing with some option paralysis trying to decide between the two at those price points, is the 4090 worth it when all it offers are 15% more cores and 4gb vram?
If you plan on owning the laptop for a long time or if this is going to be your primary computing device and you do game a fair amount, then get the 4090. If not, save a bit of money and get the 4080 version.
4080...5080 probably will probably get release in a year or so and you'll be shooting yourself in the foot. 4080 is better and worth the money, 4090 according to jared tech is not that much more.

Yes but if you're after gaming and performance, it's worth it to get the 2023 model. Especially if you're at semi-competitive or pro level. DLSS3+Frame Generation is worth the price of admission in my opinion.
From a purely entertainment perspective, strongly disagree. This model is a performance powerhouse. Don't need things like a fingerprint scanner jacking up the price when they can remove said features and cram in better hardware geared toward performance.
