    not sure why Samsung don't pay more attention to dex - they made a really cool, practical feature, but just sort of didnt pay too much attention to it over the last few years - super underrated. They should also let z fold users use dex on device like the tablets.

    • @Shan_Shah
      @Shan_Shah 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +37

      The screen is too small and the aspect ratio is to weird because of folding form factor and isn't optimized for almost a perfect square

    • @nickthaskater
      @nickthaskater 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +86

      @@Shan_Shahentirely incorrect. The size is fine and the aspect ratio is irrelevant. I use my Fold as a PC all the time with the floating windows feature. Having the DeX interface is only really different in that it has a much more useful taskbar.
      There is a thread on Samsung Members with hundreds of people asking for this (it's the most "liked" thread on the entire site).

    • @Shan_Shah
      @Shan_Shah 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @nickthaskater who cares about the dex interface? If you have a software limitation that doesn't allow you to use dex productively, it's basically mobile in a desktop interface. The aspect ratio is relevant for the interface and the screen size. My that logic slab phones can run on screen dex because that also supports up to 5 apps on floating windows. Until they don't find a way to make dex more productive and remove the software limitation, it's less relevant.

    • @nickthaskater
      @nickthaskater 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      @@Shan_Shah who cares about DeX? Probably all of the people watching this video (except you, I guess), the 40,000 members of r/SamsungDeX, and the hundreds of people who have said they want DeX on the Fold's inner display on Samsung Members, for a start.
      You're conflating like 3 different "arguments" here. Pick a train of thought.
      The aspect ratio of the Fold's inner display is similar to the 3:2 ratio that's praised on productivity-focused laptops, or 4:3 that used to be the norm for PC displays. There's no issue with the aspect ratio.
      The software limitations are irrelevant to this discussion given if you're actually limited by the software you wouldn't be looking at DeX in the first place. Those that are have either found workarounds or aren't hindered by the software.
      DeX can run up to 20 apps on screen. 5 is a limitation that comes with running a third-party adapter on an slab Galaxy (the Fold has no such limitation) that is negated by using an official Samsung dock or simply enabling a toggle in Good Lock.

    I've been using Samsung DeX with my Galaxy S20 for almost a year now, and my overall experience has been great. I'm mostly browsing the web or doing some gaming which DeX handles pretty well. A couple of tips for those out there who would like to give DeX a try are to install the MultiStar module from Good Lock which offers a few extra features for DeX such as displaying the interface at a higher resolution regardless of the cable's connection, and also has a setting which allows for more than 5 windows to be opened at a time. Those are the 2 main settings from MultiStar that I highly recommend enabling to get a better experience. Also, regarding the mouse cursor color, there should be a setting to change the size and color of the cursor in Settings > Samsung DeX > Mouse and trackpad > More settings > Pointer size and color. I hope this helps

And not only did it jump from hard-coded 1080p to 1440p, but also managed to run in 21:9! I fully expected it to be locked to 16:9 aspect ratio, but apparently it's not the case.

    You don't need a hub if the monitor is USB-C monitor. You can plug in the keyboard and mouse to your monitor and even ethernet wired network. This way you can plug in any device with USB-C display output like Mac Mini, too. You can enable more than 5 apps in the settings. Gmail in the browser, add ui=2 parameter (prepend a question mark for parameters), then gmail will render desktop UI.

    I use Brave and Chrome on Dex with desktop mode on. It has almost no difference as compared to using Laptop. Especially with Brave, you can simulate the desktop experience pretty good.
    For the portability option, I simply bring a bluetooth keyboard and a portable monitor. It's a little bit more to set up as compared to simply using a laptop, but it works for me. Weight wise, a portable monitor is extremely light. I only really need to use it when I have a few hours to spare in a cafe, in that case setting it up would make sense.
    Another thing I love is the continuity. When I go to my office, I plug this to my pc and use it as a Sub machine inside the PC environment, in the cafe I set up the portable monitor or just use the phone, at home I simply connect a monitor. It's quite seamless.

    If you use the Samsung DeX Station or DeX Pad, or the Skull and Co Jumpgate (the only third party hub that is recognized as "official"), even regular phones can do up to 20 apps. Otherwise, as some have mentioned, you can use Good Lock to allow more tha 5 apps.

    I rmb living with DeX as my primary "desktop" for 6 months, as I sold of my first PC built and still accumulating cash for new more powerful built. All I can say, Samsung DeX is really amazing for day to day use. At some point i even forgot that I'm using a tablet-run desktop, that's just how well is DeX design for desktop use. I can even edit videos and have almost the same desktop experience editing with added mouse and keyboard (I use CapCut). The only thing I really longing for was being able to play desktop gaming. Oh mybe using office app? Like Words/Excel etc., sure Android has mobile version of it but it's just not the same versatility and experience as the Windows variant. Another annoying thing is some app are not design to run fullscreen + landscape but u can always run them in windowed, which works great for all app I uses. Other than that, I can say for light to medium workload, DeX can replace PC

    I've never felt the need to use DeX in my life until now since I changed to an office job. Now I find it so useful for times I don't want to pull out my company laptop I just plug one USB-C from my hub to hook it up to a monitor, keyboard and mouse and away I go. The only issue I'm still having is Google Earth point blank refuses to render on DeX with my S24 Ultra. It works great on the phone but not on DeX. Just place names and no map layers. Tried all the cache clearing and DeX developer mode etc too

      Actually it _is_ comparable to PC. Nomad Sculpt supports some advanced features also found in Zbrush, and it's allegedly better than ZbrushCore. You can even use an Android-compatible pen display like the XP-Pen Artist 16 2nd Gen.

    • @superduperpeter

      @@DaverZ yeah to some extent like you mentioned, and very impressive. I just didn't want anyone quoting me on how PC clears with ray tracing, animation and all that, when you can actually do some pretty impressive sculpts some budget PCs can't even handle on those intensive computer 3d programs.

    • @DaverZ
      @DaverZ 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@superduperpeter Thanks for the reply. Your language was a bit ambiguous though. Were you saying Nomad Sculpt can handle some heavy sculpts that budget PCs can't handle? If so, you're probably right. On my S23 Ultra (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2), I've worked on sculpts with several million vertices without problems. The 8 Gen 3 is roughly on par with the 2020 MacBook Air M1 (which is passively cooled) and the 8 Gen 2 isn't far behind, so yeah, I could see it beating a budget PC easily, especially when you slap on a phone cooler.
      Nomad Sculpt supports subsurface scattering, which involves ray tracing to an extent, as evidenced by the noise that fills in when you turn it on and move the model around. Also, several phone chips now support hardware-accelerated real-time ray tracing (including the 8 Gen 2), so it should be fairly straightforward to add full-on ray tracing to the app, or any other app for doing 3D work.

I mostly do spreadsheets, email, and CRM work on it. But because it is mobile, I can take it on the mat for attendance and lesson plans. At my desk I have a hub and monitor set up, so I connect it to my hub and it sits under the monitor. This gives me a great dual screen setup with a mouse and keyboard. I still use a traditional laptop at home for designing marketing material and video editing, but dex has been a perfect experience.

    Best Galaxy device accessory is an external OLED display but tablet style instead of desktop monitor style. A tablet display can be had for as low as $200 and Inocn sells a 15 inch sells one for $300. If you want a good Dex experience get the best peripherals. I use a Razr Orechi mouse and a decent backlit blue tooth keyboard...I use one that looks like an Apple clone. This all easily fits in my backpack so a lapdock not worth the expense. I use Dex as my Daily driver with my 15" Galaxy Tab 9 Ultra and the 15" external OLED display. The video image quality is nearly identical. For text intensive task I use the Ultra and have the second display to stream my Trading View stock app and off the right I have messaging on my Fold 6 but my Tab 9 Ultra is also linked to WhatsApp so I can respond to chat group stuff right on there with my full size keyboard. I do all my Zoom meetings on the Tab 9 Ultra in Dex mode or on the Fold 6. Meanwhile my Windows Laptop off to the left has basically been demoted to streaming Bloomberg TV.

    First off great video! Dex is so similar in terms of it's basic functions to other devices, but also so different in how it can be used. Any video on Dex is very helpful! It will not replace my Surface Pro 9, but when I do not have that, this can do around 80% of what that device can.
    You hinted at it, but that docking accessory is garbage. A good idea, but not a good product. The stands though are amazing and there are many different options. The setup I use which can be interchanged between my Surface Pro 9 or Fold 5 is a portable monitor for $100-$200 (I use a 14" Asus Zenscreen Go or Touch Go which both have built-in batteries and the touch still works on the monitor so it really is just like having a bigger phone screen), a Bluetooth keyboard for $40-$50 (obviously you could go cheaper or more expensive) that is full size that can easily switch connecting between my Surface or Fold, and lastly a mouse $20-$50 (again this is all preference, mine can connect to both devices)
    With this setup for roughly $150-$300, you get everything better than the device that that brand is trying to be. Granted it may not be as compact, but I can have a laptop bag with all of these accessories and can have a triple screen (Surface Pro 9, portable monitor, Fold 5 on a stand) set up with 2 keyboards and can work from anywhere in minutes. This has been over 10 years in the making for my dream setup. I am happy the tech finally caught up lol.

It would be nice to only need like one phone for home and one for work and maybe a tablet that you can just hook up where ever you are atm.

    I think Dex is the future for tech. Most people don't utilize the powerful device they carry around in their pocket right now, this will actually start to use it to it's full potential. All it needs is software licensing and compatibility, and it will fully replace all desktop and laptop devices, in my opinion.
    It only makes sense, to have everything on one device. That's the most frustrating thing today about tech, is having to keep files, apps, and settings on at least 2, often times 3 or 4 different devices, transferring things between them to either get files on a device with the software you need to use it (i.e. video editing or recording), or to get files on a device with a bigger screen, or to get files on a device you can take with you as you travel/etc.
    Having everything on one device with this kind of versatility solves literally all those problems, and as long as that device has the licensing to use things like Microsoft Office and good video editing software, the sky is the limit. It's the best innovation I've seen in tech in at least 10 years.

    it's been two months since you posted this, and perhaps some others have said it already, but you can change your cursor color and size in DeX settings no different than how you can change your cursor on an actual desktop. you could change it to a color rather than traditional black or white that shows up well on either, and then switch to dark mode. I use dark mode just fine with a colored cursor on my S24U.
    I agree with the sentiment that it should just auto change based on mode, but still, you can just manually change it instead of just assuming you have no choice but to use light mode. all it would've taken was a few seconds of just looking in settings to see if you could in the first place.

    I would recommend AR glasses, a decent folding keyboard, and a Bluetooth mouse over the next dock any day of the week. You basically have a giant screen to enjoy your content or focus in on the productivity and the cost can be very similar plus next dock screens suck. Also get a power bank with wireless charging for this type of setup if you’re planning to use it for like 4 or more hours. But this way you have a computer with a giant monitor with you at all times. Add in a Remote Desktop if you have an old pc / Mac lying around and you’ve got a killer set up for anything on the go.
