  • Make sure to wear a respirator (unlike me).
This is how I painted my fence with a spray gun. Oil based paint. Pine fence. I primed it first with an oil based primer. This is where I got the gun: www.grizzly.com/products/H7667 When you click on links to various merchants on this site and make a purchase, this can result in this site earning a commission. Never pause when spray painting. Complete the cycle or panel by continuing past the work piece. Stop and then do the next panel. That creates a more consistent color when dry. Ask any guy who paints cars. They complete the entire car layer in one stroke then pause to do the next layer. Keep the paint gun exactly the same distance from the material and never tilt the gun at any other angle. Always paint straight. That's why cars have a consistent color. No streaks or color fades. I've been doing this for over 40 years. I know what I'm talking about.

If the compressor is running continuously during the spray job, without cutting out as it reaches the set pressure occasionally, it means the capacity of the compressor is exceeded or right on the limit. If that is the case, you should stop every 10-15 minutes spraying or so and let the compressor cool down for at least the same time. Otherwise it is being used beyond it's duty cycle and it will fail prematurely.
Of course that may be of no consequence to you if you regard it as expendable against what you paid for it, but I thought it worth mentioning.

If you only use your compressor a dozen times a year even two dozen times. Abd once or twice a year you use for a couple hours straight. It won't be that had for it.at my shop the industrial 80 gallon went down for like a month. I had to use the kobalt 26 gallon compressor to paint with. It barely could hold just above the pressure needed for the pressure pot. 50 ft line, air water seperator. On the trigger it would hold 50lbs the pot needs takes around 50 max I run it around 35lbs. Off the trigger it would go to about 65-70lbs and no higher. It has a 3 year warranty. So for 275 dollars if it breaks we get a brand new one. For about 2 months I ran that thing for 8-12 hours straight. I put a fan right on the motor to help cool it some. But that's was already a few weeks in. And it was summer time. In the sun. Lowe's is good about exchabging stuff out. We get our chop saws and some tools from there. If it's within the warranty period they swap it out. I worked St Lowe's for a couple years as well. When you go into the store with a return. I've never seen or heard of them not taking the customers word for it. And plugging in a product. If it's not working it's a potential fire hazard. If you need a compressor to trash use it for whatever jobs you need then swap it out for a new one. Their going to rebuild and resell it anyway. They get a credit from the manufacturer for it. If it's worth it they'll ship it back or crush or dumpster it if it's not worth it. Like all your tool returns they put the batteries in thr recycle bin and trasu thr tools

Just want to chime in and tell you don't worry about these know it alls. An actual HVLP costs about 12 times the cost of what you are using now, for your home projects and small projects, this is just fine. Your compressor is just fine and you have a high volume low pressure system. You need to adjust your needle to flow better. People get these mixed up just like using air tools with the little compressors. The tool don't work off pressure, works off volume. Your gun setup is where it's about. Your comp can push 150psi, TOTALLY enough and no, it's not "overworking". That's the point of using it and I had that same model and it always stayed on, no issues. If you want to get something above this setup, you don't need a $5,000 system. Harbor freight has one for $210, get a titan spray gun... Been using it for 5 years no issues. Sitting in my shed now for 3 years but I bet that $5,000 it will crank right up as I'm testing it tomorrow to prep for our total interior painting. But for your setup now, it's perfect, just adjust your needle to flow out just a touch more. Also FYI for your better benefit, "dusk coating" as one dude was down talking you about is actually called flash coating. Flash coating is 100% normal. You flash it on, wait a minute, flash it again...repeat a couple more times. The final lay is slower and fuller. Keep doing what you are doing bro, you are doing well and works just fine. Don't let these tools make it to be about tools. It's only a shed, not a Ferrari people lay off em.

    2. Don't stop the spryer until you are off the edges.

Your material needs thinned, there is also a 100% wrong way to adjust and set up your gun and even if you think is spraying ok and you like it. without the knowledge of what the spray pattern should look like material and fan width, pressure ect.
Spraying isn’t a pick up and way you go sort of thing.
If you were doing it correct your material would come out smooth and even and you could top to bottom without the need to pulse.

Hey I think you're a good painter anybody who has the nuts I wanted to use a different word but to go out and get a spray air compressor and use it and research and do what you're doing to me that makes you a good painter now cutting in and all that stuff you know that all comes with time but the fact that you are taking the step to actually use a sprayer compared to a brush in a roller means that you are above-average so I wouldn't downplay yourself you can do it a terrific job I'm a professional painter over 30 years and you'll be surprised how many people are scared of using a sprayer so kudos to you my friend keep up the good work

As somebody who painted a lot of fences (and by that I mean kilometers ). The best and cheapest way to get any fence painted, is to use a painting pole and exterior roller sleeve & a long handle rad roller to get any bits you miss with the big roller . Just get yerself some off cuts or roll of roofing felt as a dust sheet to keep the ground from getting covered in paint.
I see people all the time spending days doing a short fence with a brush. All that will do is give you a bad back & knees lol

    • @porkercon

Very nice. Good information from someone who is experienced. I was wondering about that way before doing it by spray. Ill remember that for next time. Makes sense how it would save your knees and back. Thanks.

Airless sprayers are the way forward (Im a professional painter with 20 years under my belt). Even something like a wagner 350 m will do this job perfectly. Look into airless sprayers for high volume spraying. You will achieve much better coverage..not to mention running materials with higher viscosity - so no thinning, (better finish/results/less coats). This compressor set up isn't really worth having - for reasons mentioned in a previous comment, I.E. not enough pressure or cfm for spray painting and the compressor is likely gonna fail prematurely from being at maximum pressure none stop.... If you wanted to use a compressor for spray painting, a larger compressor with more cfm is the best way to go. You will not achieve any consistency or coverage otherwise and the compressor will be able to handle the job without running none stop - it will retain the required psi and cfm much more efficiently.

Use an airless sprayer with an fflp tip and do that entire fence in 20minutes. You don't have to worry about the dinky compressor struggling to keep up and you'll have a proper amount of material on there instead of this light dust coat you've achieved with the lvlp.

BEST AND FAST WAY TO CLEAN YOUR SPRAY GUN !!! Put Paint Thinner in the Spray itself, then Spray it onto a Cardboard like you are Painting it. This will help you clean your Spray gun FASTER and also helps to unclogged any Paint that is stuck in there too :)))))))). Also, Harbor Freight have a CHEAP Spray Gun that is CHEAP and works really well. It's 15 bucks on sale and if you do one job and clogged, throw it out and get a new one, LOL. I don't like Harbor Freight but funny thing is the CHEAP spray gun actually works really well and you can THROW it out, LMAO. Cost more to clean it and cost more to buy Rollers and Paint brushes, etc... and your time cleaning.. LMAO
