I think the GTI is unfair has the Mazda sits between the R and the GTI. The A3 has the same engine as the GTI so also inferior. Hard to compare it to anything really, but give them time they will be giving the R a run

@@Skwisgaarz666 truthfully the only company that still does conventional torque converter transmission out of the bunch is Mazda. They know it works and they stick to it. Meanwhile all the other brands trying to invent a new design with CVT and AMT that obviously once it failed it would be too costly to repair one without a warranty, so for that reason alone, the only trusted Japanese brands with decent craftsmanship and design would be Mazda and Lexus. Mazda has been a clear winner in brand engagement in Canada and now picking up sales in the USA.
Still would take Mazda over Volkswagen any day of the week. Mazda looks better, better quality interior, definitely better reliability. Anyone that has ever owned a VW and had to pay for maintenance would agree.
I don't know why people are so big on VW you're exactly right the price to fix that shit is insane. & on top of that they're not that reliable. IMO. I have the Accord 2.0t... I was thinking about getting the Kia K5 GT but I decided to go with Honda because I know they're reliable, little slower than the K5 factory but I tuned my Accord now I'm just looking for a K5 on the streets & see what happens haha. And I don't want to sound like a total hater I do like the way Volkswagens look and they drive really good but so do Hondas 👍👍🚗💨🔥💯%🇺🇸

The W8 engines in passats. The 2.7t in allroads. Oil leaks. Transmission troubles. Early dsg issues. Complicated and expensive front end repairs. Squeaks and rattles. Lol. My head is out of my ass and I'm over the "soul" of the average German car. The only one I'd consider is a 911 since it is actually reliable, save for the ims issues.

Doesn't make much sense the golf R is Awd and so was the Mazda however the Mazda claims a much higher horsepower and is half a liter bigger in displacement it would be sad to see it race an even lower horsepower version with 2wd

I’m willing to bet a base GTI w/a DSG is quicker than Mazda 3 Turbo. 3 would probably get a small jump off the line (awd) but a GTI would reel it in after that.
GTI has a better low end because of the smaller turbo. R strength is the higher end

What did you expect? Here in Canada the price difference is $10k between those 2. The R is in a different class here, this is more like Golf GTi or Civic Si, the Golf R is more in line with a Civic type R

IMO, the Mazda 3 Turbo seems to target the fun-to-drive segment rather than the racing segment.
Having tested both R is definitely faster. Much more refined boy racer feel. The Mazda still is a nice quick car for. If fastest is most important R for sure. If daily driving Mazda just kills current gen R in every way. Ride, sound deadening, interior materials are on point in the Mazda. Easily on task with base model luxury cars. Very much like an S3, A3, CLA, 2 Series. 80-90 on highway completely silent. Plus 10k less. We went with Mazda over VW for our daughter. Plus 5* crash rating all around and highest reliability.
Interesting comparison. The difference in performance between the two cars reflects the difference in the type of prospective buyers for the vehicles. The Golf R is for driving enthusiasts and the Mazda3 turbo is for owner looking for a premium interior , comfort, styling and driving experience.
We knew the mazda would loose but it was a fun day. But in some ways this also proved that MAZDA needs a mazda speed or some GT version of the 3

A new speed 3 would cost the small company a fortune in development costs and few would buy. There will be no speed 3. If it were a profitable idea they would have never discontinued the old speed 3 in the first place.
Why is it out of it’s class? Both awd, both hatchbacks, both automatic trans, both turbo engines, Mazda makes 30bhp less! That’s it
@@SamCarLegion Oh for cryin out loud Sam, The Msrp for the base 3 turbo hatch is $30,900, The Golf R is $40395. Along with the huge price gap they each have an entirely different market and functional focus. I doubt many will cross shop these.

Well, the Mazda 3 AWD should out traction the GTI , and has more power, so I think this was a good comparison. Mazda is doing something right with this 3. They are targeting the luxury brands, not the Golf R.

So you don’t even mention the Gold R has 315 horsepower, that is 65 more horsepower. The Mazda didn’t lose because of the transmission it lost because it only has 250hp vs 310.
The Golf 7 R with the DSG box has always had a reputation for punching above it's weight.. Seen it defeat many Focus RS's in a drag race at least so potential owners or actual owners of the Mazda should not feel downhearted!.. It is still a fine quick car!..👍

VW has a godlike DSG gearbox, only a handful gearbox can match with it. Even with same power car will lose definitely.
DSG is truly godlike (in terms of reliability). It is better to get rid of such a car as soon as the car warranty ends.

@@rogerbarrett9920 are you sure you need to spent 7000 to fix the DSG? This is "wet clutch" and even if you feel the clutch slipping the cost of clutch replacement is less than 1000 USD. Gearbox itself is as robust as manual, way more reliable than automatic except the clutch pack.
Fyi, the clutch pack is designed to last 240 thousand kilometers. There are people who been travel more than 300 thousand kilometers without the need of clutch pack replacement.
The one that not long lasting dual clutch is using "dry" clutch which often use for model less than 250nm. Don't buy anyone which using dry clutch, the headache never end.
The Golf R is a hot hatch in every sense of the word and the Mazda 3 Turbo is premium hatch which happens to be quick. I don't think it was ever Mazd's intention to threaten the Golf's performance credentials with this model but rather make a comfortable, luxurious and reliable hatch fit to do the daily commute and if you ever feel racey it'll glady oblige to an extent. The Golf is performance biased and the Mazda luxury biased, different strokes for different folks...interesting video nonetheless

Mazda did not tune the 2.5t to be a performance engine. It's a torque monster but it does not like high RPMs. I have to wonder what it would be like with a modern high torque 8 speed auto and a tune which favored horse power a little more than torque. Something like 275-280 hp / 300 ft-lb. Just a thought. 😉 I do want to say I love the 2.5t but it just does not turn in the numbers you'd expect. I think a lot of it is torque management in order to prolong the life of the current 6 speed auto in full throttle launches. Kind of build power like a diesel.
Mazda doesnt build competition cars.mazda concentrate on riliability.but ya with 6 speed manaul and 2wd this wudv been way quicker.the 4wd is to heavy and auto slow it down
A bigger engine with higher power and torque has lost to smaller Golf GTi and what's more the greater Golf R. About speeding performance, just don't mention Mazda.
Just a small...small...detail tho - Mazda's engine wont need a rebiuld after 150k-200k and wont burn oil with time...Even the latest TSI is nothing compared to Skyactive. And just be be cleared 😳☝🏻 Im a freaking Golf owner 🥳
My GTI was more reliable than my Mazda 3. Both great though
After drag racing, Golf immediately refilled the oil and went to the service
Fun idea: to make it a little more competitive, find someone that's added a Corksport Intake and Exhaust (once they're available) to the Mazda3 and then re-do the race. Would still lose to the R but would be a much closer race with the 10-15 hp increase. Hopefully there's some tuning options available for the Mazda in the future as well. I'm sure there's lots of untapped potential in that engine.

Yea for sure. I have a 2015 Mazda 3 with a manual, did intake and exhaust and she is quickkk. I've had loaber Mazda 3s from the dealer and even in 2.5 like mine they are way slower feeling. The few horsepower gained is very noticeable, especially on the top end

@@fachman that hasn't really been a mazda problem for quite some time. Granted the new mazdas could have some weird issues like the hondas that were recalled of course. My 2012 mazda 3 2.5 has been through 8 winters and hasn't rusted at all minus some exhaust piping and bolts underneath the car. My old protege 5 and nb miata were a different story though...protege 5 rusted so horribly.

I must say, I much prefer driving with the standard auto box in my Mazda 3. I've had a DSG and AMT before and I just prefer something else, either manual or auto. Interesting point though, my 3 is actually quicker off the mark if you go straight from brake to gas, instead of binding up the drivetrain like you were. I can't speak for the AWD turbo version, but give it a go and see if you notice any difference. Might be something to do with the Skyactiv gearbox design?
As a GTI owner, I will say that the problem is that VW is garbage with a nice bow on it. Great if you like spending your time working on your car rather than driving it. Mazdas are a lot more reliable.

Great test. I'd pick the Mazda 3 any day and twice on Sunday over the VW (GTI or R) solely on the interior and especially when the MK8 hits the US market in 2021.
I own a mazda 1.5 2020 its even slow to respond than my previous VW polo 1.2... What were you thinking comparing a Mazda and a Golf R or is it called just an R ... Not even a Golf GTI would be fair or rather feasibility to compare. A normal 2.0 VW Golf engine would be enough!!!... Mazda is just a different car for the looks.

@@SamCarLegion a very VERY GOOD tune. But EA888 has one of the greatest engine for turing its very easy have a Golf R with 450HP and more that 550 of torque. I think that Mazda could be best in other thinks but in raw performance never.

It's not the DSG that makes the VW stand out, it's the HALDEX AWD system, VW picked it for a reason! Also the turbo's that spool early, and hold peak torque from 1400rpm. That's basically from the beginning if you launch with launch control.

The turbo engine in the mazda has zero top end pull. You're better off shifting at 5k than anything higher. You get the most pull in the 3-4k range in the mazda.

I wish more of these online drag races included a NO LAUNCH just step from idle comparison. IRL, you dont always use LC or have time to set it up at the correct time. And some of us prefer not to grenade our gearboxes.
The Golf will win while the engine works... don't know for how long...the Mazda will have to be somebody's inheritance...

It’s all about power delivery in these cars. German HP >Japanese HP>American HP. Meaning a 2021 911 with 400HP beats a C8 corvette with 495 HP. the DSG is nice but my 2016 GTI Manual was faster than my bro’s 2016 GTI DSG.

This was a lot of fun to film!! I think in a few years the Mazda will give my R a good run. But transmission needs to be tuned and the AWD needs to be a bit more traction. But the golf r was a fun car. That first run was on me 😅

DSG on Golf shifts faster gears, but if you choose a reliable car for long-term operation for 5-6 years at least and 100 thousand miles, then a Mazda with an automatic transmission is preferable. Golf will smoke nervously on the sidelines).

Update: I test drove both for about an hour. The Mazda has a nicer interior for sure, and the AWD came in handy on some backroads w/ low wet spots, but it's just relatively boring to drive.
The GTI is much more raw, the steering is more precise with that LSD (not referring to acid), and coming from a shitty '09 Nissan Altima, I really don't mind that it's a little less luxurious and stiff. It's miles better then my current whip.
The GTI is more fun, hands down. The Mazda is more luxurious, hands down. That's kinda the decision... Then there's the wild card of whether or not AWD is important to you.
I'm getting a GTI. #stancenation (or whatever they say)

@@mezzb Sounds like the right choice for your climate! I moved from Massachusetts to Texas recently. If I was still up there, I think I'd lean towards the Mazda for that exact reason.

The Golf R is 292hp and the Mazda has higher tq numbers 320 vs 280 so its not that much of a huge difference. The launch control in the Golf and the DSG are the big differences here

@@Alexandru-T. well for one European spec Golfs get port and GDI injectors added to there engines which eliminates carbon buildup. US Golfs are GDI only and combined with turbos they gunk up pretty fast, the DSGs have been problematic too especially the 7 speed dry DSG.

That 6 speed is actually great transmission for what it is, very reliable when compared to VW, shifts are on point and it doesn't jerk like usual WV transmissions do.

And thats with an old R on the 6 speed DSG.....the 7 Speed DSG mk7.5 is noticeably faster in the real world than the specs indicate, on launch mine consistently does 4.2s on the 0-60, measured with a draggy.
7.5 would crush the mazda even more. more power, more torque, and the dsg 7. the author talked about tuning the mazda ... tune the Golf and you will see.
In a 100,000 mile journey I know which one would win 😉
As many others pointed out(and must be boring to hear/read), the R is in a different leauge. Not only like 20% stronger but AWD vs FWD. Tho with a remap that 3 could be a real sleeper.
