It’s detuned on purpose. They have the wastegate set at about 12.5 psi from factory with this new generation. Consider that the old WRX and STI were set around 17 and could peak at up to 21ish. Folks have been just doing tunes only and have been getting well over 300 wheel hp and gobs more torque. My guess is that Subaru didn’t want to release a new generation that immediately crapped on the previous generation’s top specs power levels. I really like the new Prius. My only complaint is the tire size. Last time I checked tire rack there were only 2 options. Hopefully more will become available as more people buy the new Prius.
It actually... looks decent for a change. I've never liked the way the Prius looks, but would absolutely drive the new one if I were in the market for a car.
I work as a tire tech and you'd be shocked at tire prices for these new cars. Just had a guy yesterday with a 2020 Altima that had 215/45R18 on it. Cheapest option we could order cost was $179. That's just the rubber. No Install. For a shit tire with zero mileage warranty. That's fucking insane. Car tire sizes are fucking out of control these days and it's only getting worse.
Turbo cars I have found can be sometimes inconsistent, sometimes they pull very and sometimes not, you never know what you are going to get especially if heat soak is there and it pulls a lot of timing etc.
I was biking around the city and saw, what looked like a sports car parked in someone's garage. It was a Prius and man was I happy to see how it has evolved. The Prius is now cool.
Lets go Mazda! Mazda3 AWD HB owner here, even though it's only an NA, ditch the OE tires, slap on a K&N filter and it's pretty fun to drive. You get the confident inspiring handling and a little bit of intake noise while being a comfortable daily. Pulling time though, it's something common Mazda does, especially with the NA 13:1 compression in the heat. I find that 93 octane over the 87 even in the NA is so much better and responsive. It feels like a different car on 93 when you're passing semitrucks with the AC full blast at 95deg temp.
The WRX hasn't improved performance in TWENTY YEARS. When it came out in the US, it could hang with- and beat, Mustang GTs. Now it's down 200hp to those. Mazda 3 Turbo is such a letdown. Attractive exterior, great interior and a dud on performance. They seem awfully slow for a 2.5T in a small car. And the Prius. Toyota hit a homerun w/ the new one. It's now good-looking, still super efficient, but decently quick. Of these 3, I'd buy the Prius. **GASP**
I just looked it up. The new Prius is faster than a lot of 1960s muscle cars like the mustang, a big block chevelle, almost any muscle cars but the top of the line muscle cars.
Now test them all on a track. It's great that it can accelerate decently well, but I'm guessing that's about the only thing it's competitive in when compared to the other two.
If you’re tracking, you’re not buying a Prius. But this kind of comparison opens the Prius up to people like me who drive quicker cars/SUVs as a daily but are tired of 17mpg. I’ve driven the previous gen for a few week-long stints and never have considered one. That changes with the new generation.

Exactly. Between the cladding, econo interior and the CVT vs DSG offering, this gen was an embarrassing effort. Its like they are trying to kill the WRX off. 0:39 shows how cheap and awkward the Scooby looks next to the Prius and Mazda 3 Turbo. The sad part is they are even further behind on the inside.
This is why Mitsubishi needs to bring back the Evo. Without that direct competition I feel like the WRX has lost what made it feel special. Not to mention Mitsubishi needs a performance car.
I lowered my Mazda 3 turbo and put a sway bar and strut tower brace on it. Steering feels a lot better. it's not twitchy like the Hyundai n's but it doesn't have the sluggish turn in. Also exhaust mods help the power substantially even without a tune.
As a comparison to show how the Prius has improved - it would be amazing to race the same 3 cars, but their early 2000 versions (if Mazda 3 goes back that far). I know it would be a wipe out for the Prius, but interesting regardless. Cant believe the PRIUS was not 100m behind a WRX and Mazda. Pretty cool. Considering the fuel efficiency of the new Prius too ... its not bad! Shame its not coming to Australia.
I'm really pleased to see all the likes and positive comments on this video, because cars like these (relatively affordable hatches and sedans that are fun to drive) are dying out, and we NEED to make auto manufacturers aware of how badly we want them! And the Prius is proving that they don't need to be a "sport" trim; they just need to be fast and fun! Awesome video! Loved seeing these 3 go head to head, and the Prius was closer than I expected!

Toyota has stated the 2L Prime engine can be tuned to produce over 300hp.
Where is the Viper from the intro??? 😭😭😭😭😭
When these are supposed to be the budget cars, but you still can't afford them 😢
Get your money up!
I work WELL over 40 hours a week to provide for my family. The more you make the more cost of living raises. So after a while unless you want to never be home with your family or you "hit it big" these things are a no for me.
@jaysrandomnesschannel don't get me wrong I van literally go out a purchase one of these right now. It just wouldn't be a wise stress free decision 😆
100k is the new 60k....Money printer go bbbbrrrrrrrr
@@wayward03100k is the new 60k everywhere except in salaries
go Mazda3 had mine from new in Feb 2022. still love it so much.
Ahh, I love having the Mazda 3 win. It's so remarkably refreshing.
Length of the video is 6.5 minutes and the Prius prime 0-60 is 6.5 seconds, coincidence?
I really like the new Prius. My only complaint is the tire size. Last time I checked tire rack there were only 2 options. Hopefully more will become available as more people buy the new Prius.
It actually... looks decent for a change. I've never liked the way the Prius looks, but would absolutely drive the new one if I were in the market for a car.
Bonus of the SE trim. Lot more availability
The cars wheel wells aren’t going to grow. 🤷♂️
If mine finally arrives, i will use 205-55R17 as winter tires and probably the same as summer when the oe ones will be shot.
Mazfa please release the Turbo in other markets!
Turbo cars I have found can be sometimes inconsistent, sometimes they pull very and sometimes not, you never know what you are going to get especially if heat soak is there and it pulls a lot of timing etc.
A dragy in each vehicle being raced would be appreciated
I would have loved to seen the Elantra N DCT also in this comparison. Similar price and options. I also want to see yall get it's lap times please!
I was biking around the city and saw, what looked like a sports car parked in someone's garage. It was a Prius and man was I happy to see how it has evolved. The Prius is now cool.
Prius hangs in there pretty good! And while the 3 hatch is the prettiest the Prius is pretty close in that regard too.
Handling has been scary for me at times. I still stock tires, what tires you recommend?
The boys are out here casually recreating Fast & Furious
For this video, more like Fast & Curious, lol
And if you used a Rav4 Prime, all three cars would have gotten whooped!
Wow, they all performed well. Yes, I'm very impressed with the Prius Prime!
The drag race no one expected or asked for but a very welcome one
Exactly!
Yeah really Dude Prius on the track lol 😂 even the Mazda is not a track car or the Wrx for that matter
The Mazda was redesigned I believe in 2019. The Subaru and Prius were redesigned 2022, 2023 and still beat them. Such an underrated brand.
the Mazda is soooooo underated
The fact that the Prius was competitive with the Mazda and WRX is a testimony to how far the Prius has come.
The WRX is such a disappointment
You mean the WRX driver was disappointing?
Since 2009 the WRX has gained a whopping 6HP and 14lbft torque, while adding 150lbs of weight.
Subaru doesn’t even try anymore.
@@frankobrien1371 nope, the car. Every year it is more and more behind other brands in terms of performance.
@@ClaudioAguileraMunoz I’m not disappointed at all. They seem to sell a lot of them as well.
@@Reginald_Harrison how fast you need to go is entirely under your control. No need to race to the top of some speed heap and waste R&D. Their job is to make a product that is purchased and profitable.
These 3 cars are quicker than almost everything made between 1972-1979. That is amazing. And better MPG
Dude, all three of these cars would absolutely annihilate anything made between about 1970 and 1990, save for maybe your unobtainables (Ferrari, Porsche, and the ilk).
Were econobox cars priced at $40k back in the 70s?
@@janoycresnova9156 Don’t have an inflation calculator in front of me to figure out what they are. That’s not what I was talking about anyway
Back then you could work in a gas station and own a house and a decent car. The whole inflation argument is moot. Cars and many other things were affordable back then.
@@janoycresnova9156 just "luxury" cars that drive like econoboxes. Every car was such a collosal piece of crap during those 20 years. 9 liter V8... 120 horsepower. Brakes made of milk bottle caps. Just junk.
As a previous gen wrx owner, I think subaru dropped the ball on this new gen. WRX has regressed by the mere fact that others have progressed. Subaru should be embarrassed. No wonder enthusiasts are not buying the new gen.
Exactly. Between the cladding, econo interior and the CVT vs DSG offering, this gen was an embarrassing effort. Its like they are trying to kill the WRX off. 0:39 shows how cheap and awkward the Scooby looks next to the Prius and Mazda 3 Turbo. The sad part is they are even further behind on the inside.
could we get the times after the drag race please?
Los Mazda 3 o 323 de esos años no sirvieron para nada se fabricaron con Ford y ya no existen en cambio los Prius por hay anda muy campantes.
Doesn’t anyone else want a throttle house and carwow collaboration? Carwow and throttle house drag races plz! Make it happen 😅! Be an amazing trio
Yay another episode of Throttle House Drag race
What a pity the Mazda 3 turbo is not sold in Europe
Well done Toyota 👍
I'm really pleased to see all the likes and positive comments on this video, because cars like these (relatively affordable hatches and sedans that are fun to drive) are dying out, and we NEED to make auto manufacturers aware of how badly we want them! And the Prius is proving that they don't need to be a "sport" trim; they just need to be fast and fun!
Awesome video! Loved seeing these 3 go head to head, and the Prius was closer than I expected!
I think a video on the Mazda 3’s inconsistency would be interesting
You guys has to be the first channel in the world to drag race a prius
mazda !!!!!!!!!!!
WINNING THE drag good job !!!!!!
MAZDA 3 !
This made me want the Mazda3 Turbo more than anything else 😭
I own a 22 WRX and it's objectively better than the previous generation mechanically
... now looks wise, it's subjective. It's a great platform to build on in my opinion.
Jame with the Churchill quote at the end, lol, it had me rolling laughing!
