It’s time for a hot hatch showdown!
We’ve got Mat in the all-new Audi S3, and he’s facing off against its key rivals to see just how different it is from the previous generation!
So let’s see how they all compare. Starting with the Audi, it’s powered by a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo that can produce 333hp and 420Nm of torque. It’s equipped with all-wheel drive, and as new it costs just over £44,000. It’s also the heaviest car here, weighing in at 1,610kg.
Alongside it is the VW Golf R. It’s also powered by a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo, but in this instance it produces 320hp and 420Nm. It’s one of the lightest cars here, at 1,525kg, and it’s also the cheapest, coming in at around £43,000.
Next up we have the BMW M135i. Once again it’s powered by a 2-litre 4 cylinder, and this produces 306hp and 450Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels, and the car tips the scales at 1,525kg - just like the Golf. However, it’s slightly more expensive, costing around £44,000.
Then finally we have the AMG A35. It’s powered by a (you guessed it…) 2-litre 4-cylinder turbo, and it puts down 306hp and 400Nm. It weighs in at 1,570kg, and it’s the most expensive car in this line-up, costing around £46,000.
So will it be an easy win for the S3? Or could another car snatch it? There’s only one way to find out for sure… LET’S RACE!

The VW GTI/R is THE original hot hatch and pretty much invented the segment. 💪🏽I own top tier BMW and 911’s but my daily is a GTI for a reason as I fly under the radar and is the ultimate stealth performance sleeper. It’s also more fun than my last M2C as my daily.👍

It is as Sam said. The Golf R is the GOAT of Hothatches. Even when drag racing against more powerful hothatches. It shows you what it's made of or has never fallen far behind. Once again it proved who the King is.

The standard R is not 320hp. They dyno at about 335 to 340hp stock!

Very close between the Golf R and S3. But once they get to about 100mph, you can tell the extra power makes the difference. They are both great performance cars.
I think carwow should have two camreas at the finish line on both sides of the strip cause i feel like the view from one camera is sometimes biased to the side that its positioned from

The brand new A35 also has a small electric motor as well as the updated 8 speed gearbox.
Now that the pricing is the same I strongly suspect the 8.5 R will have more power than VW claim, possibly around 360. There has to be a differentiating factor for it to sell 🤷♂️

@@ihavealife002 lol why not? The 8R already produces 340 from factory as per all the dyno readings, 20 more than the claim, so in all likelihood they’ll bump it up again. I expect 350-360.
The golf 8.5 is even better with the software changes on the dsg and a better ecu map for even more low boost.
I had an A35 and now have an S3. The S3 is the most boring car ever, the A35 may be slower but it feels quicker when you’re actually driving it and is the more fun car in every way!
I have an RS3 8Y, recently had an A35 try it and was very surprised how gutless it was. I absolutely destroyed it and he was trying. I do agree on the S3, but it's an S,not an RS. Just try the RS3, fantastic car and way better than the AMG A45s I had before it.
@@mauricetoussaint7283 I test drove the RS3 before I got the S3 and naively thought it would be similar in feel just a bit slower, which is exactly how I found the A35/A45s to be. The RS3 was an amazing car, the S3 hasn’t put me off Audi’s, it’s just RS or nothing 😂.
Have you got the new S3 with the torque splitter. It's a big improvement on the previous model.

At least on paper it is slower than outgoing M135i.

Car wow did a test already. The M140i is 0.4 (rounded up) of a second faster.
The UK version of the M140 was RWD, it was the US version that was XDrive. The UK version would have been stronger on the rolling race, but may have struggled off the line.

The Golf was surprisingly fun to watch
The problem with modern efficient clean engines is that the ECU constantly makes small adjustments to the fuelling/Mixture/ignition timing. This makes performance quite different depending on engine temp, ambient temp, humidity, and all sorts of things, so performance is quite variable

Mat is a very entertaining host and I trust his car knowledge (I disagree on his trim/dealer choices for sure though lol). But dear lord does he have a fantastic crew with these guys. Sam, Nick, Rory, and Yanni (when he's winning) are all knowledgeable and entertaining. Hard to bear the content and entertainment factors elsewhere on TH-cam.
