This shows that Princess Suntra Devi mother of King Parakramabahu the 6th hailed from the Kalinga royal family of India. This is further confirmed by a stanza 71 of Parakumba Sirita Dinamina Kula Vijaya Niridu parapurena pura Kalinga Dina Parakum Buja Raja Himi Rajaa Veshya Bujanga (2) Vira Alakeshwara was the King captured by the Chinese and this captive King was the father of Sunetra as mentioned by Couto in Decade V. (3) King Vira Alakeshwara was a member of the influential Alakeshwara Family (Saddharmaratnakaraya). Nissanka Alakeshwara, the most famous and powerful person of the clan was his maternal uncle. Nissanka Alakeshwara was a member of the Giri clan of Kanchipura of India. Wanik Wamsa was another equivalent term used for Giri Wamsa (Niyangampaya Inscription). (4) As per the Sagama Inscription, of the Gampola era the Alakeshwara family was Menawara from the father’s side and Ganawasi (Lenawa/Lamani) from the mother’s side . This means clan names of Giri and Menawara were the same and used to identify the same family. (5) Therefore, this Giri Menawara clan has a descent from Kalinga Desha and the line of King Vijaya, the first King of Sri Lanka considering all the above facts.
