Lets hope the Hornby company watch this to understand the huge drift that's gone on after this 'classic era' of Hornby Tri-Ang gear. This is a proper train set that would give endless hours of enjoyment. Todays Hornby product seem to be wrapped up with elements of disappointment and a total lack of vision

Imagine seeing this when your a kid about 8 o 9 back in the 60s.
It is like the magnificent picture on the box that you optimistically thought was inside it but wasn't.
There was son and his father, both dressed up, dad wearing a tie, pipe in his mouth with some ready rubbed baccie.
We want to know Oscar, is this you, dressed up, tie, short back and sides. Lol
I wouldn't want to go home of I had seen it.

@@oscarpaisley I'm always inspired by your Triang trainset type layout.
The play value is priceless, they were a joy to have even if they weren't super detailed like the Hornby trains of today.
Must admit Ias a kid I loved the electric locos with the catenary.
The catenary was so inaccurate with only one word which curved on curved track?
The earlier catenary was more prototypical but appeared to be stamped out as it was flat metal sheet.
I had some and the sparks between pantographs and wire affected the old 405 line telly.

I like the Super 4 track and thought it was the best thing that Tri-ang did. I can't help but notice how much effort you have put into the trackwork......plumb straight lines and parallel tracks. You have to have some engineering background. This is truly a wonderful layout and pleased that Tri-ang formed part of my early child hood.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good evening Bewsey Bill. It must have been pretty good super 4 as elements were carried over with the original change to system 6, although in its current form just the geometry has carried over and many new practical items added. I was never sure whether Tri-ang may have "borrowed" the basic geometry from elsewhere. However, I have enjoyed working with Super 4. Sadly I have no background in engineering. I'm glad you enjoy seeing the layout in action.

This video was an escape from the “norm”, and hugely entertaining Oscar! It’s good to see your layout operating and the variety of moves you can make with it. I think sometimes we overlook the “play” value of model railways, although the purists would shudder hearing me say that.
And that shunting pole! What a great idea, although that smaller one with the shunting wagon wouldn’t be that useful(?).
Great Sunday afternoon viewing as always.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Glad you enjoyed this video, Andrew. I think the play value is very important with whatever type of railway we may have. The enjoyment gained must be the desired end result I think. Whether it be a scratch built a railway or a circle of track on the living room carpet. This hobby covers a very wide spectrum and I'm sure for most of us enjoyment is what we seek. That little uncoupling pole looks like a bit of an afterthought. They really should have kept producing the original one from the 50s but in red or yellow maybe as they are hard to find sometimes when you put them down.

Agree David! Railway modelling is an engrossing hobby. It can be anything to anyone, regardless of skill level. I admire those works of art seen on TH-cam as much as I do the efforts of what I call (rightly or wrongly) the “mainstream” set - of which I sit happily within! And Oscar’s layout is a gem - especially from the history of Triang side.

R8247 will operate those old point motors. They come up on e aBay quite often. I got mine as new for £24. You can download Railmaster from Hornby's website and set up your trackplan. You will need to bid for an elink to get a licence key for Railmaster once the free evaluation period has expired. Railmaster will show you the way the points have been set on the screen which is much easier. You don't need more than one R8247 to begin with - a rotary switch will work. Two wires and a common return. It doesn't matter how many points are depicted on the trackplan. Railmaster will happily switch any point depicted on the trackplan regardless of whether you've got it connected up or not. You don't need R2447 and elink to begin wifh. However, once you got these things you can set it up to control lights and signals on the trackplan as well. At present when you change the point by hand, you have to update what is shown on the screen with a mouse click (or tap if you have a touchscreen).

Interesting you make the comment about buying items out of the catalogue based upon drawn illustrations. However I could add; there was likely a Triang dealer probably within walking distance, and as inferred by Richard Lines comment about dealers not wanting to stock two complete triang ranges (this was regarding TT's sales issues) one presumes triang dealers did in fact stock the complete catalogue range.
So presumably the catalogue image of the Jinty would whet the appetite, and then you'd get your pocket money together and go and eyeball it at the dealers, and walkaway with your money intact and it's back to see Mum and tell her all about the brand new blue pullmann that's just come out and it's the greatest model ever and you must have it and you'll make all the tidy room promises and it's okay to get you an early birthday present.

I still have a Hornby Dublo set that was bought for me around the late 1950's or maybe 1960 ish, it was the smallest set available in those days consisting of a small green 0 6 0 tank engine, 2 wagons and a brake van and a circle of track, still in it's original box with instructions and a guarantee slip for 60 days and last time I tried it it still worked, I think the price in Australia was 5 pounds 17 and sixpence in those days, there was also supposed to be a passenger set with two green southern suburban coaches but I never saw it, the engine was supposed to be available in black but I never saw it in black either, a strange thing about the model is that the number on the smoke box doesn't match the number on the bunker.

Hi Vivian, great looking model those from Hornby Dublo and definitely built to last. I got the little green 0-6-0 in two rail, model number 2207. Until you pointed it out I had not noticed the different numbers 31340 on the bunker and 31337 on the smokebox door. I've just had a quick look in the HD 1962 catalogue on page 11 there is the green 0-6-0 and the black one model number 2206 standing next to it. Whilst is not possible to see numbers on the smokebox doors in the illustrations you can clearly see the number on the bunkers of both models 31337 on the black one and 31340 on the green one. I've just had a look on ebay and found the black one it has matching numbers.

Hi Oscar, I'm a retired old boy and during lockdown decided to take up the worlds most common hobby. I came across this video purely by accident and found it most nostalgic in many ways. It seems that your more into shunting than watching trains go round and through scenic views. I do think that extending your engine sheds might be a good idea. I get the impression that you seem to specialise in the older engines as some kind of personal pursuit ? It seems that many model train enthusiast seem to prefer shunting rather than 'go around tracks'. Out of curiosity, whilst you clearly have a very sophisticated layout do you intend to do much in the scenic roll i.e. landscaping ? This is in no way a criticism just purely curious and maybe something for me to consider going forward. I really did enjoy your video and will be watching a few more. Cheers, Rick the Bulldog

Good morning Rick great to hear you've enjoyed seeing my railway in action. I do quite enjoy the shunting and also it's nice to get a train running around the railway, they make such a lovely sound. The scenery thing has never been something I've been interested in since I got back to model railways a few years ago. As a child in the late 1970s I messed around with hills, trees, buildings, ballast, bushes, tunnels, figures and various products to simulate grass, earth and rocks! I remember getting in a terrible mess with it. Now I just enjoy running the model locomotives and rolling stock and love the track work in its various forms with all its shortcomings.

I had the 1973 catalogue (when it was new), but I only remembered having it after watching this video! The Tri-ang Hornby gear may not have been as realistic as the new Hornby stuff, but it had a great character (I reckon because it was all made in the magical 1960's). I was hoping to see your overhead-wire diesel running; which reminds me that my favourite catalogue featured functional overhead wires (so that two trains could run independently on the same track), but favourite because of the great photos it had. That catalogue came out in about 1970. Do you have that one?

Oscar, brilliant videos, I've just discovered them. Two things, 'scuse my ignorance, super 4 track you're using? and the other thing: I use H&M for the old hornby dublo, and the powermaster and safety minor are auto transformers and far and away better than the resistance controllers that are the clipper and duette. I have had one of the transistor H&M's of the period and okay, but still well off what a safety minor is. of course the cu1 is still a resistance controller so no difference. what I'm suggesting is if you get the chance to borrow one see what you think, I was blown away how good they were. I'm just very sad I got rid of all my old dublo to go and get modern dcc HO stuff 'cos was wondering what I was missing. turns out not much so getting all enthused over triang now. I've done the dublo thing :)

Hi, Jimyjames73, break controllers H & M sadly I have no experience of the H & M 2000 but from what I read they were way ahead of their time.

! thing wrong with the H & H 2000 I did find - is that you can while the Loco is going forwards - you can suddenly reverse it with out stopping it 1st - which can break the Motor on the Loco but on the other Controller you have to stop the Loco 1st b4 you can change direction!!!

Hi Oscar, only just seen this old video of yours. Towards the end you show a catalogue with an unreadable dealer's name but say the address was Oxford Road, High Wycombe and you ask if anyone remembers that shop. I lived in High Wycombe as a boy in the 1960's and that model shop on the Oxford Road was called "Childs" toyshop, so I guess W A Child was the name of the owner. They also had a bigger toy shop in the middle of town but I think most of the railway stuff was there in the Oxford Rd shop. Childs were the main Triang dealer in Wycombe and myself and many other young boys spent many a happy hour perusing the shop window and occasionally going in and spending our pocket money on buying stuff for our train set. Happy days! There a little more detail about Childs at www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/111240-model-shop-in-high-wycombe-late-1970s-early-1980s/

Good evening Steve thanks for the information it’s nice when people remember these places, it definitely adds a little more history to the catalogue.
      Take care.

The track on my layout is super 4 it came into production in 1962 and remained available into the Hornby railways period in 1973.

Thanks for this, I had one of these in the days of my Yoot - I was quite offended when I discovered the real model railway freaks referred to Tri-Ang as 'toys' and Hornby as 'models'. But that was before I discovered alcohol and sex.
PS: I've still got my Tri-Ang catalogues and back issues of 1960s Railway Modeller magazines. Although around fifty years old I've never been able to bring myself to take these magazines and put them on the second hand market. Please don't tell anyone, I wouldn't want anyone to mock my secret addiction long ago model trains ...

A look at the models, side by side with the catalog, would be fun! Just how much "click bait" did the catalog possess!??

This is a video that inspired me... Yellow handles on the decouplers.... No problem? Even a hole at the top of the handle to hang them up with..
Our most successful layouts had nothing under the track.. Our most troublesome layout had foam that fell apart long before the layout expired?
How I wish that Hornby would pull their heads out of the sand, and re-release some of these good old classics that one can actually play with?
