  • The Model Railway Story: From Hornby to Triang and beyond, this documentary explores how the British have been in love with model railways for more than a century. What began as an adult obsession with building fully-engineered replicas became the iconic toy of 1950s and 60s childhood. With unique archive and contributions from modellers such as Pete Waterman, this is a celebration of the joys of miniaturisation. Just don't call them toy trains.

    Got my first train set, Hornby 0 gauge clockwork, in 1953. Have been modelling railways ever since. A great hobby, you meet other modellers and help each other with any problems that arise. Visited the Bassett Locke shop in High Holborn many decades ago. On visits back to UK visited as many model shops as I could.
    Semi-retired in Picton, South Island, New Zealand.

      Thing is, it's the bigger scales that are going to keep the hobby alive, especially with how prices for smaller-scale equipment are skyrocketing. N-scale rolling stock is actually more expensive pound-for-pound than G-scale, for example.

    • @PalomboDylan
      @PalomboDylan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VestedUTuber oh yes they are. when i was a kid which im 25 now N scale and Z scale model trains at a local hobby shop would cost $140 USD or more and now they are even more expensive. but yet new hornby OO/HO scale models like the new hornby princess Elizabeth cost 225 to 235 GBP which is almost $350 to $400 USD and that is nuts. thats why i just buy hornby railroad range stuff in decent condition on ebay. i definitely dont have $350 to $400 USD to piss away on a model train.

    I understand this is about British trains, but you can't talk about the history of model railroading without mentioned Joshua Lionel Cohen

    • @muir8009
      @muir8009 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately of course one can watch any documentary on lionel and theres an absence of any mention of Bassett lowke or Frank hornby.
      What's most disappointing about this programme isn't the absence of Lionel, who of course didn't invent the toy train, didn't make the first electric train, didn't popularize toy trains; but the lack of anything not only of Bassett Lowkes competitor Gamage, but no mention of the Marklin brothers, a vague mention of a rather ambiguous reference to Nuremberg, but gives the impression that Bassett Lowke made his own models.
      Ives competed with Bing for the lower end of the US market, popularizing the toy train, Marklin and to a lesser extent the US brands like Knapp, Howard, Boucher etc serviced the high end. Lionel got his break because the US Government made German imports most prohibitive after WWI. Where Lionels genius was through marketing, borrowing the brilliance of Ives, and improving upon it. Lionel's trains were almost secondary

    I wanted to see when this started. I expect the 19th Century but when in the 19th Century? Who were the first to create model train sets? It must have coincided with electricity becoming more common in cities and homes. This says “ history of model trains” but doesn’t say anything about its origins.

    What's a crown? Something like a guinea? Or a quid? We Americans don't know too much about the English monetary system before the European Economic Cooperation.

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A Crown was 5 Shillings.Even when that went,we had the Half-Crown,which was 2/6 (12 pennies to the Shilling)

    • @oscarosullivan4513
      @oscarosullivan4513 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its old British/Irish money pre decimal. Quid is just slang for a given amount. A Guinea is just above a pound. Pre euro currency in europe was diverse

    I think your title is wrong. It should be: 'The Joy of Model Railways - History of Train Sets'. With respect, there is no way that Pete Waterman is a railway modeller. He collects and plays with toy trains.

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Why? Because he's not a part of your elite club that obsesses over 100% accurate perfection? Because he doesn't meet your standard of detail? Don't gatekeep.

    • @TheGameCamer360
      @TheGameCamer360 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Day what a fucking idiot, have you actually seen his layout in its entirety. He’s far more of a modeller than any of us can hope to be. Your just bitter that he has the money to invest in it to such a grand scale.

    • @oscarosullivan4513
      @oscarosullivan4513 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave day is a follower of Budget model railways so unlikely he is fussed about detail just laying track down and running trains and making scenery

      @@oscarosullivan4513 You could'nt be more wrong. I make rolling stock. I don't lay track or run trains. My point is that Pete never made anything in his life. He pays others to do it.
