It’s a brilliant layout oscar, it shows how devoted you are now and that the toy of choice in that era still works today. It’s sad that a lot of children back then lost interest, if it was due to the computer game, the lack of variation that everyone had a railway, I’ll never know. But I’m 14 and absolutely love Tri-and and Tri-ang Hornby, I have quite a few models now and they are in my opinion, more functional and more inviting than the price tags today.
Glad you found interest again Oscar, there are loads of people out there who want to see these collectibles running and you bring happiness to loads of us every Sunday! It’s what the rest of the week is for, to make us more excited! At least that’s how I think.

@@oscarpaisley I find that you do get more 'play value'. They look very good, nothing easily breaking off and have functional, easy to service mechanisms. I feel better seeing a loco running when i have fixed it and made it work well than straight out a new box from China. Love these models, they really do drag you in to wanting more.

The same scenario almost. Mine came back during the first lockdown and the two Boys got involved. The latout keeps developing and levels are added. Very useful background video.
As someone who went from DC to DCC, it is incredible that a railway modeller like you found a way to make DC still be interesting in this digital age, especially with those rare Triang Catenaries (which unlike the majority aren't just for show)! Keep up the great work!

Astonishing collection that runs like a Swiss watch. The focus upon track and train (minimalist scenery) creates its own ambience. I had a chuckle, running two trains whilst trying to film is asking for trouble. Fortunately, the buffer bars have spared any injury, but the have not smacked the delicate side rods, so far, knock on wood. Definitely sets the bar for Hornby-Triang collecting.

@@oscarpaisley I will be visiting often. This is one of the very few layouts and collections of this calibre I have seen to date, and I spend a lot of time web surfing looking at train collections. Finding yours was a happy accident. It is so VERY hard to keep focused on one thing, as there is so much out there to distract one. I have some marvelous vintage Triang, which I adore, but it doesn't look terribly good along side a recent issue what with its higher level of detail and scale. When I film, I have to choose one or the other, or it just looks dodgey. You have done which many of us have failed at: sticking to a vintage and in this case a manufacturer. Again, the minimalist scenery only serves to underscore the beautiful Triang models- that is a terrific move, on your part. Hats off! See you soon in these pages!

Speaking of your EM-2, I have one in less than pristine order, body shell only, but hopefully one day will be able to resurrect it with a decent power platform and bring it back to life. It’s a great layout Oscar , I’ve said it umpteen times , an essential part of my Sunday mornings . Looking forward to see how your layout progresses . I just remember the great layouts from the Tri-ang Hornby catalogues and yours very definitely remind me of these . Great days . Somewhat surprised you left the hobby and have only relatively recently come back to it . I suppose I never grew up . My first trainset laid out on the dining table was a Tri-ang Freightmaster in 1965 with the “Brush Type 2” I never lost interest . Always had a trainset in some form . Finally made it up the loft in the “new house” now some 30 years ago . What I realised eventually was that I wasnt trying to model real railways , but the railways of the Tri-ang Hornby catalogues . I think my layout does pick up the atmosphere of that time, although using newer track , and I still run my old models , as well as some of the latest releases . I just keep on buying trains! Thanks for the channel . Love it

You have mentioned in a number of past comments some of the great memories you have accosted with items in you collection, I think this is really important part of the hobby which is often over looked. 4:47 I used to have a table layout with a downhill section and the track at the bottom very close to the edge and my Bachmann Union Pacific 0-6-0 fell off and broke its front off made its cylinders loose. But that loco still runs today. I got rid of the table layout in 2015 when we re-did the basement it was in

It’s magnificent Oscar. I have just set up a layout on my living room floor. I haven’t done that for perhaps 40 or more years. What a joy it was. I’m using peco set track. I have one complete loop and a half with two passing places. My one loco is a Lima Flying Banana. Very modest in comparison to yours, but it’s made me feel so happy to relive my childhood days .... Your layout is a credit to you and your tenacity. You know we must be the same age.....48-49 ish.....so i can appreciate the love of railways, then the other interests you had during your older teens.
It seems to me if you have already taken over a dining room....just extend it until the walls!!

Hello all the way from the USA. For the past several weeks, I've been watching all your videos since your first upload. Even though the Triang Hornby trains are before my time, I find them to be very interesting and fun to watch. And the sound they make, when running, is very pleasant and satisfying. Just comes to show you that with proper maintenance, they will last for many years if not decades. I definitely look forward to seeing your new layout as it comes along.
I don't really plan to get any of the Triang Hornby trains, but I will definitely be looking forward to seeing more new videos. The trains from Hornby Railroad range (like what comes in the Midland Flyer Starter Set), as well as other OO gauge trains currently on the market are good enough for me.
Also, I found some of your videos to be very helpful and informative.

Good morning Raymond it’s great to hear you’ve been enjoying the videos of these older English model railway items. They are great fun to run and as you say make a beautiful noise when in motion. I do have a Midland Flyer set! It’s what started my collection off in the first place my son was given one when he was very young. And it brought back memories of the model railway items I had as a child...
From what I’ve read Tri-ang Hornby items are fairly hard to find in United States. I think they did try quite hard to break into the American market back in the early days, but without a great deal of success. I think more success was had with the Canadian market.

Hi Oscar,
Great video on the evolution of your layout and your interest in model railways. Almost all of my locos and rolling stock are the same vintage as yours apart from some 2 rail HD so can relate fully to the era. I look forward with interest to seeing the taking down of the layout and progression of the new one.
About a year ago I laid a 6x4 oval and some sidings on the dining room table prior to knee surgery. This was to preserve some sanity as I couldn’t get into the loft to try and build something more serious, e.g. the Caley station in Edinburgh in the 1950s and branch lines down to the Port of Leith. Six months later I have had another knee done and mobility and flexibility are not my strong point however hoping to get up there soon and always getting some inspiration from your videos and experience.

Hi Andrew Glad you enjoyed that, definitely worth a grin as you say! I think the hopper unloading bridge is on the cards. I was disappointed not to be able to include one on the current layout. And I’ve avoided trying to demonstrate it on the carpet railway, too many elements to bring together!

I have seen your earlier layout in some of your older videos and wondered what the history was, now we know. Exciting times ahead, your coal loading stage perhaps? Play-value wise, one of those bottom unloading hoppers would be good. A Freightliner crane would look impressive too, depending on how much extra space you have.

Hi Oscar, it’s lovely to see how your layout has developed and has even made me become interested in triang too! Maybe with your new layout you could use an oval of system 6 track with the newer hornby railways catenary to use with your class 86 (the hornby electric you mentioned near the beginning) and maybe use some of the other Hornby electrics like the class 90, class 91 or even Lima’s class 87.

Glad to see your layout is Super Four. I HATED system 6 it just seemed so flimsy. I stuck with Super Four until I went to Peco Streamline nickel silver... great layout mate.

I've been watching this and other recent vids of you saying its time for a serious change in layout design. I just had to get my thoughts in based on my experiences with this kind of semi solid base board system. As you and many other railway modellers and collecters will know reaching the middle of the boards for cleaning and maintenance can be very difficult due to the fact many of us arent born with arms long enough to reach the middle properly. So i told myself why not do the most logical thing and go around the outside of the room hugging the walls, either free standing or fixed to your walls leaving the space underneath unencumbred with baseboard uprights. ( I'll be fixing mine to the walls in part with angle brackets ) . With lots of room for your work benches and other storage, easy to get at. Easier to reach the back for cleaning etc and gives your trains a much longer run. 24-30 inches wide would perhaps be doable in practicle terms. I'll look forward to the new build whatever it my be.
I like the baseboard I have at 10 x 5‘ it’s probably the limit. I can reach with ease to the centre for cleaning and maintenance from the sides as I have access from all around. So it’s definitely not my intention just to make the board bigger as a whole. But I intend to use the space effectively to create longer runs as you suggest and create space for me to work and photograph/video the items as well as creating better storage.

At 3.30 I think I saw a Triang P5 Power Controller. Now I have one of those that I saved up for in 1955. It still works today ! Its strange that your "railway story" is remarkably similar to mine. My P5 controls an authentic version of Bournemouth West, Brockenhurst and a very nearly Axminster. And dont we have a lot of fun ?

Like you, I do love the EM2, probably the finest model locomotive to have come out of the Margate factory, and aside of a few things, it was dimensionally very accurate. The design of the motor bogie was ultimately a let down, such a shame Tri-ang didn't follow the lines of the Hymek's motor bogie with proper end bearings to support the armature. Pick ups on the rear bogie like the later Cl37s would also have also given improved running.

Oscar if I can give you a tip....next time you lay track use the micro track laying screws available. ...it means you can simply unscrew without risk of breaking sleepers like you would levering up pins. Thanks for the informative video, I think many of us have looked forward to this. Gary
Thanks Garry that’s a great idea I had looked into this before but had not come across them until I’d put this railway down. I may well use them in the future. As you say it’s always a worry taking track up this whole stuff perhaps more so as the plastic work is now quite brittle. I’ve use the bare minimum of track pins when putting down the railway.

It was very much part of the Triang Railway system and there are some great items that you could incorporate such as the level crossings, road/rail sections and the car transporter wagons!

Hello Oscar, my big surprise today was finding out the age of the layout. It's not as old as I thought. Like most of our layouts your's continues to evolve. Having seen the room it is in I know there is plenty of room to expand, perhaps an "L" shaped layout is in store for us. You mentioned that you record about six weeks ahead of publishing your videos so perhaps the work is well under way? I have never had a Hornby Dublo layout but my local hobby shop got some in last year and they haven't sold it so I'm bargaining with them for it. Like others in the comments I was surprised at your success in backing that train over the elevated section and through the crossover, a fine testament to your servicing and maintenance system.

Things have suddenly become busy here with the end of the current lockdown period and the gradual return to what many now call the new normal Time now feels very short.I think the Hornby Dublo would be a lot of fun. Has inspired me to recreate a layout, for the joy of just playing with the trains and enjoying just escaping into a world created in Margate

"An odd sort of video" it may be, but it's also one of your most interesting. The layout is the sort I dreamed of as a kid if I'd had an enormous (unlimited?) amount of pocket money. Finescale modelling is what I'm really into these days, and I'm planning to go over to P4 eventually, but I really like what you have created at the opposite end of the hobby. I admire its honesty and total lack of pretension - oh, and it oozes nostalgia. I've built something a bit similar for my grandchildren (although a lot smaller so it can fold up against the wall); this runs rolling stock and locos ranging from 1961 to 2020 but on modern track (I had to turn some wheel flanges down on the older stuff) and with all locos converted to DCC. The points are mechanically controlled with wire in tube and the uncoupling ramps and level crossing gates are driven by servo motors. So, while my grandchildren have a Frankenstein's monster of bits from different eras, yours is the real thing. It would be lovely, if, many, many years from now, your layout could end up on public display as a working exhibit.

Good afternoon Lisa it’s great to hear enjoyed the video. I didn’t use a track planning software to make those plans but instead I scanned The relevant symbols to scale! and arranged them using photoshop.

It's funny I am building my base boards as I'm watching lol I did wonder why you kept the steel track as opposed to nickel silver and yes the video answered a lot of questions but ..........what controller do you use and why? .
Look forward to seeing the upgrade you might as well go all out and use the whole room lol .

Good morning Brian that’s great to hear you’re at work with the baseboards. Definitely an exciting time once you’ve made a decision to make changes. I made these videos about six weeks or so ahead of time so at present I’m just beginning to take the catenary and buildings off the layout. So there’s a few videos to come before changes start to happen. I use H&M clippers, I was given one as a child to go with the old Triang P5 controller. So when I got back into it and the collecting started and I burnt out the little Hornby controller which came with the train set and looked out for one of these clippers and found there were plenty available at very reasonable prices in great condition so I tried one and they work really well for my needs at present, I have four of them and all the points and isolating rails are operated by the Tri-ang leave frame switches, I think they look great and it’s easy to see which direction the points are set plus a few microswitches have also crept in. I found the lever frames switch is quite an unreliable item and high maintenance so I may well switch to all microswitches on the next layout when it finally begins to take possibly with point direction indication built-in!

Hi Oscar,yes I was the,same around 14 I lost interest in model railways and took up 'Bird watching hmmmm ,it was 1982 ,ABC,spandu ballet,Duran Duran in the charts and these lovely girls which you grew up with all of a sudden become WOW,hehe,when my son was born I started collecting again I could go into beaties at high holbon with my baby son buy a locomotive and say it's for him the man behind the jump knowing it really was for me and my wife going yeh ok,he's 29 now and amazed over 500 models all for him mind ,Not ,looking forward to new developments to your layout and that loco you said caught the centenary was a class 86 remember a few weeks ago I spoke about you getting one ,take care mate and all the best ,Mark 😃

Hi oscar my ivatt a green one ran not so great...as the tender kept coming off when running tender first. I had to swap the rear wheel for one off a texaco tanker as the flanges were longer to keep it on the track.
Good morning that sounds annoying sometimes it’s the back to back with those wheels you need a little spacer between the two sleeved wheels on the axle. I do this sometimes with the very early models with a Mk2 couplings it helps out through the point work.

Hi Oscar ,, iv only just managed to see this video now 2 years after you made it.
I may have watched bits of it a fair while ago but im an expert at falling asleep (not just your videos but all videos haha) during videos.
Iv been collecting an absolute heap of super 4 track (i have 1and a half 60 litre tubs full of it) and i will use it but will the other later trains like the vic rail S class and gm commonwealth hornby trains run on the super 4 along with some of the lima/hornby indian pacific and southern auroras trains i will be running.
Also do they still sell the convertor tracks from super 4 to super 6 track or will it be 1 of them make my own convertor track as i can do that if need be.
Any advice from you (or anyone) will be muchly appreciated.

Good morning John great to hear about your large collection of Super 4 track, the converter tracks were originally made in 1966 to help people with the conversion from Hornby Dublo to Super 4 I think it was brought back into production again in the early 70s when Hornby phased out Super 4 in favour of system 6 from what I read modifications were made to at this point to get a better fit with Hornby's new track and seems to have been in the catalogue until 1983. Pat Hammonds book indicates that 630,000 of these convert a rails R.476 with made between 72 and 83. There seems to be plenty of them available on that well-known auction site.

Neat layout, but ...
... your turntable would get replaced by two turnouts or a double turnout. Turntables need at least five tracks accessing it, then a double slip or two turnouts cannot replace them. Usually turntables are made accessible from both directions.
Is Triang still alive ? I had one many many yrs ago with 3 rail track....
I think the Tri-ang brand name was dropped in 1972 becoming Hornby Railways. Many of the models in the range lived long live before upgrades and replacements as technologies and customer expectations have evolved.

Can you still run 1970's hornby models on fairly modern nickel track?
Good morning Andrew, shouldn’t be a problem running most Hornby models from the 70s on the contemporary track. By this period they had released system 6 track in 1970 and the models / wheels had been adapted accordingly. Occasionally you will find the back to back measurement may need adjusting but the wheel flanges from models of this period should be fine.

Oscar Paisley great videos by the way. I recently rediscovered my modest hornby collection and have been inspired by your videos to source certain models via EBay. The B12 being a recent purchase.. My story is very similar to yours. First train set around 1973, the LMS set Princess Elizabeth. Hooked on trains ever since (although my interest also wained by the time I was around 15). The Hornby period between 1970 to 1980 has fond memories. Even though the more modern models from Hornby and Bachman are much more accurate I do feel the Hornby models from this period have a certain charm and are still great items to have.

Since returning to my model railway hobby (two boxes unpacked in June 2019, unopened since packing away in 1984) I have been slowly building up a layout , in the garage, here in Spain. The layout is being built with, what I now know to be ‘series 6’ rail. However, I do have quite a lot of Tri-ang track, series 3 (I believe) and, some, which appears to be older? I also have some rolling stock, including an Electra, like yours, in green. I would very much value your guidance with regard to my future use of this track and stock and, to this end, wondered if I could PM you for some much needed assistance. Hi Oscar. Your layout is really inspiring. I also love the older trains and run a lot with the earlier couplings..
My layout however is done with "Standard track", running two lower circuits and one "up and over" with the inclined piers , sidewalls, gravity unloader and Girder bridge.
Having dealt with the earlier Standard track, I can fully appreciate what a great layout that you have built and how well your trains run.. It's a great credit to you. I have also listened to your comments about the "hand decouplers". They are now available from our products with Yellow handles that have a loop on the end for hanging them up? Whenever I see Super 4 track for sale on e-bay I think of Oscar! One thing I have noticed about your layout is that you are not too concerned with Scenic stuff. The odd looking buildings placed randomly about. Semaphore signals not even in the direction of trains. I think that the accessories were meant by Triang & Hornby to enhanced the models and complement them, so perhaps put a little thought into the position of them. Apart from that slight criticism it's been a good layout for making the videos and can't wait to see what you do with the new one.
