    Fun fact: when Mr. House developed his plans to save Vegas from the bombs, his calculations for his ace in the hole were only off by a single day. If he had it, he would’ve saved Vegas in its entirety. It’s safe to say he was still very successful anyway.

    Something about Mr. House that this video doesn't cover is what his ultimate goal is. He's probably the most selfless side you can take in New Vegas, because his ultimate goal is the preservation and prosperity of humanity, but he's also fairly ruthless in his pursuit of this goal. His intelligence and arrogance has lead him to believe he is the best chance at humanity's continues survival (and to be honest, he might be right), but this mindset also can potentially allow him to justify any atrocity he feels is necessary for humanity's future. He's almost like a much more pragmatic and less moral version of Tony Stark, right down to his looks.

    Genghis Khan {Temujin}s' reputation is infamous {and in many ways, rightly earned} but I do think a lot was unfairly ascribed to him as well. He had many admirable qualities in both his character and ruling as well as the opposite. For a 12th century warlord, he was ahead of his time.

  • @MrMeddyman
    @MrMeddyman ปีที่แล้ว +12

    That's the main three, but the great thing about New Vegas is even though there are only three factions big enough to run Vegas doesn't mean they are the only ones who call it home. The minor factions are up next.
    Choosing the NCR will likely lead the Mojave to become ruled in a very haphazard way, but it's an ungainly beast of an empire and people often fall through the cracks, so when they look further east to expand into Utah or Arizona, Vegas may become neglected in a security sense all the while being taxed and exploited for resources much like the colonies were to Great Britain.
    Caesar's Legion is cruel and brutal, but if you help them come out on top one thing is certain, the Mojave will be well protected as nobody fucks with Caesar's Legion, these endings aren't binary they have circumstantial variance depending on how you complete missions and choices you make. So say if the Legion is ruling the Mojave, but Caesar himself does not survive the playthrough the circumstances are much different than if he were. Rome was both a republic and a despotic empire.
    House will run a very orderly and efficient Mojave, but it's a cold one and very unequal as the people who can't afford the luxuries of the New Vegas Strip live in two districts just outside its walls Freeside and Westside, where gang violence, exploitation and starvation are rampant and the poor pile up. It seems like he does care for the Strip but he is a cold hard capitalist and would return to old America values before anything else.
    There is a fourth "choice" for eagle-eyed players, if you don't like any of these factions, but that is a story for another day =D

    14:10 When it comes to Building things to last instead of break, remember the setting of fallout is a global shortage of many major resources and mid-cold war levels of nuclear anxiety so by the time the bombs fell building things to last made a product far more appealing than it's alternatives.

    Caesar in fallout kind of uses the name as a title as he is also referred by his own as Kaiser (German for Caesar). Historically the Roman Emperors adapted the name as a title to refer to the emperors starting from the first Roman Emperor Augustus, Julius Caesar's grand nephew and adopted son. Soon the title Caesar was relegated to refer to the heir to a Roman Emperor or his co-emperor who ruled in his stead in either the East or West portion of the Empire. The emperors adopted 'Augustus' as their imperial title. After the fall of Rome a German led 'Roman Empire' was formed and its emperors were known as Kaisers as was the case with its successors the German and Austrian Empires.
    Julius Caesar was a calculative and prudent individual who always had a way to cover for his excessive acts and even sometimes tried to remedy them. Most of his known story comes from his own accounts of events as he kept well detailed journals of all his battles and life. Some exaggerations have been noted overtime as he sometimes put himself as being disadvantaged and yet prevails at all costs. His 8 year Conquest of Gaul(France) saw him commit massive genocides leading to almost 8 million dead something that is not normally brought up as compared to his glorious achievements such as his triumph over the Gauls, being the first Roman to cross the Rhine river and winning the Roman Civil War before being killed by his fellow senators on the senate floor. His vision for the Roman Republic was shattered and this led to his supporters and relatives fighting over his legacy which led to the fall of the Republic and rise of the Empire led by Caesar's grand nephew Octavian (Augustus). In my point of view Julius Caesar was after the conquest of Gaul trying to strengthen the Roman Republic by advocating in favor of concentrating power on a single strongman much like in modern republics and to curb the power of the minority(the nobles/ patricians) who had long trod over the masses(peasants/plebs) by buying up all the lands and depending on slave labor leaving majority of the populace unemployed and flocking into cities leading to crimes and squalor.

    77 warheads were fired at Vegas during the Great War. House managed to hack and disable 59 in flight and the anti-missile defenses of the Lucky 38 shot down another 9. The remaining 9 got through but detonated far from the city. The people of Las Vegas gathered in the streets to celebrate being saved...only to die agonizing deaths when the wind carried the nuclear fallout from the distant detonations into the city.

  • @bthsr7113
    @bthsr7113 ปีที่แล้ว

    The PIP Boy is basically the in universe reason for your HUD and menu.
    That fortune he was cheated out of? It went to his brother in the form of the family tool manufacturing company. Which House would buy out after his brother failed to keep it running. There was actually a cut quest about his brother setting up a plot to get revenge for losing control.
    On the Securitrons. When the storyteller says they're better armed than the Protectrons, he's not exaggerating. Even at diminished capacity without the final version of software needed to complete them and House's anti-ICBM defenses, they are still armed with a 9mm submachine gun and a Gatling laser. If they are upgraded to full spec, their true primary weapons are brought online. Short range grenade launchers and long range missiles launchers. While retaining the secondary armament of the 9mm SMG and the Gatling Laser. The only production robots that rival this firepower are the fearsome Sentry Bots, which are substantially less agile and much more overtly hostile in appearance. And even then, that's more of the Fallout 4 designs which incorporate short range mortars to compliment a Gatling Laser and a missile launcher.
    And New Vegas is one of the only places with Securitrons in the world, with undoubtedly the highest concentration of operational units anywhere.
    That ace, the final piece of software House needs, and almost got before the bombs fell, is stored on a small drive that looks like a poker chip. The Platinum Chip.
    House claims some pretty noble goals in the long term, but even he describes himself as an autocrat, and he made his fortune with weapons platforms. His post war fortune is being built on the wealth extracted by an even less restrained and more hedonistic Vegas that cares not for those who have been bled broke. He is undeniably a brilliant man and has enormous potential as an ally, valued citizen, or vassal of the NCR, but I wouldn't trust him for a second.
    If given the choice, I firmly believe House would find more common ground with the NCR. House intends to build the technology base back up with the wealth brought by New Vegas. The Legion is ostensibly against technology beyond a fairly primitive level, and its capacity for creating a thriving middle class who can afford to vacation in New Vegas is limited to say the very least.

    Bethany's talking about human behavior and trying to appear civilized while being more insidious underneath reminds me of a song from Marina and the Diamonds, called Savages. The lyrics are just... so accurate to the topic she discusses, and its a timeless human trait, unfortunately, to backstab and betray for greed, lust or any of the sins really. My favourite quote of the song: "I'm not afraid of God, I am afraid of Man." Humans are among the cruelest animals on our planet, which just makes me sad to think about because we have the intelligence and empathy to know its wrong, yet it still happens so often.
    Depressive talks about human behavior aside, humans are also among the kindest animals on the planet, so we've got that going for us. I hope empathy endures and eventually marches triumphantly as the leading human trait.

    People criticized House for keeping thugs and cannibals in his ranks and doing shady businesses, but it was only because he doesn't have much of a choice.
    His plan to save Vegas was off by a single day, and it wasn't even his fault. It was a logistic problem that caused the final crucial part of his master computer to be delayed in shipping. If that didn't happen, he would have been able to activate all of his security measures and save all of Vegas. He wouldn't be forced to hole up in his tower trying to bring all his busted system back online. The people living in Vegas would have survived, and the infrastructure would have remained intact. House would have been able to restore the city long before the NCR and Legion got there.

    so on the note of Julius Caesar vs Ghengis Khan, you are correct that Caesar wasn't personally responsible for as much horrible stuff as the Khan....however
    During his campaigns in gaul an estimated 1 Million gallic people died and a further 1 Million were enslaved. His campaign was seemingly primarily motivated for personal reasons rather than for the good of the Roman Republic (wasn't technically an empire yet). He also then lead a civil war to overthrow a elected governmental body and replace it with himself with complete dictatorial power.
    However (again)
    The government he was overthrowing was rotten to the core with corruption and existed only for the sake of aggrandising and enriching the most powerful men of rome. once they were overthrown his reforms, while backed up by the threat of his legions, were generally better for the common people of rome and the ordinary and poor people of the republic had their lives made a lot better by his actions. He was also magnanimous in victory over other romans, preferring to pardon those he defeated rather than punish. Without a doubt the roman republic would have collapsed due to how bad the corruption was and how broken the republican system was by that point if Caesar hadn't stepped in when he did.
    In short he's an incredibly nuanced individual.
    Also on the Collosseum thing, no he wasn't responsible for it (infact it wasn't built until over a century after his death) buuuuut he is arguably responsible for the popularisation of gladiatorial games, as he used them a lot to get the common folk on his side by providing them free entertainment.

    The Fallout series is based on a concept of the visions of the future as imagined in the 1950s. Back then, the concept of Obsolescence by Design was not on the table yet. They made things back in the same no-nonsense way that folks back then lived. If we went through the same apocalypse from today's standards, you'd almost be lucky to find an apple watch, but it wouldn't work. On the other hand, if you found an intact Stradivarius, it would still have the same great sound as it did hundreds of years ago.

    You are correct about Caeser not being the creator of those things but he was a heavy manipulator of those systems for his own goals
    This Caeser simply chose Rome because it was a long lasting society in a low tech world like their wasteland is
    Sadly he can't exactly be born of wolves (like the legendary man Rome was named after) so he is doing what he can
    Also yes, Genghis Khan was the main originator of the mongol empire so in that context your statement is very much accurate, those these Khans are much more chill

      @UltimateGamerCC ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, everybody makes The Great Khans as the worst faction in the franchise, but you gotta remember, they were fighting tooth and nail to survive like everyone else in the wasteland. and like any other tribal society, they are only as good or bad as their leader, and the current leader is pretty decent in that regard. hell, at least they werent slaughtering NCR the way they got slaughtered at Bitter Springs.

    • @jonathanhathaway54
      @jonathanhathaway54 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UltimateGamerCC Yes I'm sure it'll be explained a bit more but the aggression they do enact to the NCR is more just supplying rivals and enemies... Even then part of the tribe cares more about the business
      If we do ever see them again I think it would be interesting to see how leaving the valley changed them

    I'd say House is the best of the three factions to follow in New Vegas. the NCR are a gaggle of corrupt autocrats that order you to kill at their smallest of inconvenience, Caesar's legion are just slightly civilised raiders and both are stretching themselves to a breaking point leaving their civilians to suffer, House on the other hand doesn't care about expanding beyond his power, he has no lofty goals of uniting the world through domination, all he needs is the hoover dam and Vegas after that he'll tend to his small territory and the people within it has he develops Vegas into a true oasis of the wasteland.

      I respect Mr. House's genius, but I cannot agree with his politics.
      I don't particularly like the NCR's approach either, but I prefer to side with them, because I feel they offer the best chance for a long-term, stable, and free society... even if they'll need a lot of work to get there.
      The Legion is not an option (except on Evil playthroughs) and Yes Man, unfortunately, is a rather naive solution for New Vegas: a Free New Vegas will only last as long as a strong autocratic leader (you) enforces that freedom, making you no different from Mr. House - or it will fall apart as soon as any dissenting faction gains enough strength to supplant you.

    • @SpiritOfSpite
      @SpiritOfSpite ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LadyDoomsinger It's heavily implied that Yes Man is going to betray you shortly after his ending leading to a robot apocalypse

    • @LadyDoomsinger
      @LadyDoomsinger ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SpiritOfSpite Sure, that is one risk of handing your entire empire over to a robot. But I've always felt that was the lesser threat of the Yes Man ending. The more likely scenario is that you, the Player, will either become a ruthless dictator enforcing your personal vision for Vegas in much the same way as Mr. House would have... Or you will be deposed by someone ruthless because you aren't willing to stamp down dissent.
      If you are familiar with Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, the Yes Man ending seems to me rather similar to the Anarch ending: Freedom will always be threatened by conflict, because allowing people to be free, will give them the freedom to oppose you.
