    Courier Six is that character you play in New Vegas. It's kind of an interesting thing to note how Ulysses is sort of a counterpart to your character. While not the final boss, when you meet him your level would've reached its max limit just like him. He himself went through his own big quest and wants you to follow his footsteps to see things from his perspective.

    Ulysses is in my opinion, the best (modern series) Fallout out character by a mile.
    Obsidian did such a good job fleshing out and building up his character all the way from the base game of New Vegas to the final DLC where you finally confront him. It was so ominous having a main objective in New Vegas but having this feeling of someone else always waiting for you. There's hints, mentions, and casual conversations that lead up to this fantastic and tense meeting between your playable character and Ulysses. All three DLC before Lonesome Road (the DLC where Ulysses finally appears) tied him into their stories in such a subtle way where you might not pick up the connections if you aren't paying attention, while also having stories completely separate of your inevitable meeting him.
    Being considered the best character among the amazing cast that Obsidian created with New Vegas, is such an achievement. Right up their with Joshua Graham/The Burned Man (one of the characters mentioned here) and Legate Lanius who both also happened to be associated with the Legion.

    As other have said, Courier Six is the Player Character.
    You've seen the Intro to Fallout New Vegas when a character wakes up with their hands tied and a man in a checkered suit points a gun at their face and pulls the trigger. The person getting shot there is Courier Six.
    In other Storyteller videos he have mentioned the Vault Dweller, the Sole Survivor and similar, which is the generic name given to the player in other games.

    Ulysses is literally the Lost Ronin. Realizing his own tribe and the Great Enemy are trapped in a downward cycle that they literally will not be able to escape from, he looks for the "idealized" America painted in dramatic history by a jingoistic hyper capitalist tapestry, a country that never existed. Having the closest thing to that literally vaporized in front of him to ash broke him, only for someone just like him to appear and yet not carry the same values or even consider those values worth pursuing puts him in a place all he can do is push back.

    Ah yes... Ulysses. The Kreia of the Fallout universe. He deduced that both the NCR and the Legion are doomed to failure. But the divide had the potential to be something new, something better. Then one day, by sheer carelessness in his eyes, nuclear fire takes it all away. A vision for a better America. So what next? Cleanse it all... Begin again.

  • @Diannalover

    12:30 Absolutely, you hit the nail on the head there. Ulysses is a patriot seeking for a nation to pledge his loyalty to, and finding them all wanting. That's what sets up his vendetta with Courier Six (the player character in New Vegas). Ulysses was convinced that this community in the Divide could be the homeland he'd been searching for, the place to plant his flag... only for Hopeville to be destroyed inadvertently by whatever the Courier unknowingly delivered on yet another ordinary run.

    "Hopeville burned lightless in the night, invisible fires of radiation scorching it from within and without. It is said a man still walked its streets, with a tattered Jacket, an Old World flag etched on the back... He remained there, perhaps as punishment for the scars he left on the wastes - or a reminder of a history he could not forget. For Ulysses... his journey was over. The Courier had been the end of his road.
    As for the Courier... he turned his back on his home for the second time and made his way back, navigating the treachery of the Divide. Tunnelers and the Marked Men... avoided the lone figure, as if recognizing the Courier's right to passage... or out of fear.
    The Courier walked until he stood again upon the edge of the Divide, the last road he would walk before the second battle for Hoover Dam. There, beside his feet, was a final package, from one Courier to another - a footlocker, bearing a gift, and a message. But that message - it is something for Couriers to carry, and for them alone. The lights flickered across the Divide, reminders that the Old World histories persist, and find meaning in the present.
    It's said war - war never changes. Men/women do, through the roads they walk. And this road - has reached its end."
    Ulysses narrating the ending slides of lonesome road DLC

    "If war doesn't change, men must change, and so must their symbols. Even if it is nothing at all, know what you follow, Courier..."
    Ulysses is amazing, I could listen to him talk for HOURS.
    I'd recommend listening to his final speech, the message he leaves after the Lonesome Road DLC. It feels like a proper sendoff for the franchise.
    Interestingly, the writers of Obsidian clearly planned this through. He's mentioned as far back as the second town in the game (Primm), and his symbols are all over the DLC areas.

    Also who the gamer world works is (out of scripted moments during missions), it's frozen until you act on upon it. Nothing moves until you want it to, it's really nice way of letting you order things. No time limit on missions and no worry of NPCs moving around. The game has active combat, but it's really more about strategy and choice on how it lets you approach the world. Basically a (almost) true RPG, letting you bypass WHOLE missions by killing an NPC type freedom. Literally walk around the wasteland killing EVERY SINGLE NPC (which I think every NPC is killable from what I remember, even companions) in the wasteland and STILL actually beat the game (I think) without soft locking yourself. As well has being able to have two companions with you at all times while going around. New Vegas really is just the perfect Fallout game and if you guys ever have to time to occasionally play it just to try it out yourselves and a short first hand experienced at what have did (and still do, still play it to this day, and thanks to mods even more), that would be fun to watch. Nothing serious, just so you two can finally experience with your own hands/eyes the Fallout world and New Vegas.
    Also it's westerned themed, so dressing as a cowboy is appropriate lol.
    [Soft locking, in case you don't know, is an sort of video game mechanic version of a paradox. The game can still be played, but you are now locked out of progressing in a questline/mission due to you either killing an NPC REQUIRED for or selling/destroying etc. an itemed needed to complete a quest/mission].

  • @Ferdawoon

    Bettany's comments about being fascinated about historyis true, but it is also easy to forget that what we hear about is a very condensed version, together with the "Greatest Hits". It can be interesting to read about a war or a battle but it is easy to forget that those things would take place over multiple days, weeks or months! We read about heroic battles but forget the weeks in a row that the soldiers huddled in the trenches, cold, wet, shivering, diseases, malnutrition, constipation, constant fear of getting shot or a grenade landing next to them..

    One of Ulysses's main points is how one person can impact the world around them for better or worse but I've always found it ironic how he does the same thing to the courier over the course of their own journey (as far as the DLCs are concerned.
    His actions are the impetus for what happens in those expansions. He tells Father Elijah about the Sierra Madre which sparks his obsession with it. His conversation with the Think Tank influences a lot of whats going on when we arrive in Big MT and his actions with the White Scars lead to their involvement in Honest Hearts.

  • @TheLorax787
    @TheLorax787 ปีที่แล้ว

    I only ever did the Lonesome Road DLC once, but from what I can remember, you the player character are indirectly responsible for destroying the divide because you deliver the launch codes. Ulysses calls you back to the divide to basically give you an ultimatum that he’s going to destroy the I15 and parts of the NCR so the Mojave can determine its own destiny. I wish the video had included some of his dialogue because he’s interesting to just talk to. You can side with him, against him, convince him there’s another way, or kill literally everyone.

    • @elianrodriguez7318
      @elianrodriguez7318 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe that his plan was to destroy “your new home” (Mojave) but it’ll be on his terms, if he lives through the confrontation he reveals that the Tunnelers are heading towards the Mojave and they’ll basically catch the populace by surprise and will give the place a slow death so launching the nukes at the Mojave is only hastening the inevitable destruction that is to come. The choice of launching the nukes to either the NCR’s Long 15 or towards the Legion is really just you redirecting the nukes to a different target[s] since Ulysses made sure that the nukes launching would be inevitable thanks to him kidnapping ED-E from C6 earlier, the only way to stop the nukes from launching is by sacrificing ED-E. At least that’s how I recall the DLC, admittedly I haven’t played F:NV for many years now so I could be misremembering the details though.

    The Fallout universe lore is already well done, but New Vegas and Obsidian really made sure you believed it. New Vegas has references to all the previous games and events, but almost feels like it's own world. Perfectly balancing FPS and some of the OLD school RPG elements of the two original point & click games. Graphically not the best looking game, but that's not way people consider it the best. It's the writing, gameplay and story.

    The American flag in the Fallout universe looks different because the fifty states were grouped into thirteen groups called commonwealths. The big star in the center represents the U.S.A. as a whole, while the thirteen stars around represent the commonwealths. The Medical Eyebots saved Ulysses after Hopeville was nuked because they saw the flag on his duster coat and assumed he was an american soldier in need of medical attention.

    The Divide is a pretty deep DLC compared to the others, not much exploration it's pretty a linear romp through Hopeville chasing after Ulysses in really difficult combat scenarios while the two of you talk over the Pip-Boy speakers. It's the culmination of the themes of New Vegas namely the illusion of free will. Because if it's not clear the player character is the Courier Six who unwittingly destroyed Hopeville years ago by delivering the detonator, Ulysses doesn't blame you for doing it as you had no idea obviously what you were delivering, but it's the impact one person can have with the smallest of actions regardless of their ignorance or intentions that set him down his path. Obsidian didn't just pull him out of nowhere, if you played the game when it came out as well as the three prior DLCs you are following this ghost of a man through the Mojave, Sierra Madre Casino, Zion Canyon and Big MT Facility and seeing where his journey took him. The kick in the pants is that Ulysses was meant to be carrying the package that gets you shot in the head at the beginning of the game, but refused the delivery, bringing the whole thing full circle.

    Ulysses is kind of weird because they tried to make him have a conflict with Courier Six (the player character). The problem is Courier Six is a silent protagonist who is design to be whatever the player wants to be. He's designed to be the ultimate opposition to your character. A courier that went down a different path whose goals and ideals are if conflict with yours but has all the skills that you used to shape the Mojave to your will. But up to that point, all the game tells you about your past is you're a post-apocalyptic UPS delivery man. So him ranting that your sins are equal to his and you caused Hopeville requires you roll with a lot. To me it made him sound like an angry whining man that's projecting heavily on you if you don't take his word for it that you did all these horrible things. Which to be fair, maybe he's right but because the game centers around a totally different conflict and doesn't set up him at all until the DLC came out, he doesn't get a lot of set up as this uber threat or that Courier Six had much of a past before they're shot in the head at the start of the game.
    I guess a lot of Fallout games have that problem. Like Fallout 1 you can choose between like 6 portraits and male or female for your character. You can meet a bunch of people on the way, and finish the game in a bunch of ways. Like you never have to go to Shady Sands, but canonically the character was male, he did go to Shady Sands, and his dog somehow lived (which if you played the original game, good luck getting Dogmeat to survive the mutant base).

    • @thecrimsoncommando3875
      @thecrimsoncommando3875 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may want to reread the Vault Dweller's Memoirs. I know at least two deaths are canon: Ian got incinerated in Necropolis, and Dogmeat got killed by a forcefield in Mariposa. The Fallout 2 Dogmeat is different dog that uses the same sprite.

    • @dagonofthedepths
      @dagonofthedepths ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thecrimsoncommando3875 Yeah I know Ian was killed but really it's kind of the same thing. Good luck getting him that far, he's kind of useless after Junktown. Dogmeat would be dead regardless just of old age but yeah might have missed that one. Only dog that lives through the ages is Rex really.

    Also if you ever actually do play this game and WANT to take it serious (as much as you can, EVERY playthrough I still pick Wild Wasteland as one of my perks, I NEED the Pipboy 3 Billion each time lol and I like Easter eggs), hardcore mode is fun. In Hardcore you have to worry about food, water, sleep and all your ammo and junk (used for crafting & cooking, which is underrated on easier difficulties, but it's fine) has weight. Sounds hard, not it's fairly simple. And with how cheap the ultimate edition is (because fxck you Bethesda, they cheated Obsidian) that comes with all the DLCs, the starting items they give you help out A LOT ALOT ALOT lol.
    Fists, melee, gun play, energy weapons, explosives, crafting, cooking, hacking, lockpicking, stealth, pickpocketing, looting, trading, resource management, conversation skill checks, freedom, choices, characters, story, writing, dialogue etc. New Vegas has got it all, it's the perfect Fallout game.
