    I have owned a 2500 4x4, 3:73 with this trans, towed heavy with it and had no problems, traded it at 251k miles running and towing great. Same thing with a 3500 dually 4x4, 4:10 towed heavy and traded it last year with 207k miles, ran and towed like a dream. I purchased both of those trucks new, they were 100% stock. People told me I was overkill on servicing because I changed fuel filter at every oil change. Changed trans filter, flushed trans, changed rear diff, front diff and transfer case lubes every 20k miles (mainly because I towed a lot). But with those miles on each truck, never had any engine, trans or driveline problems. May have been overkill on servicing but may have prevented many problems. My new truck is a 2018 Ram limited with HO 6.7 and Aisin trans, it will remain stock. Personally, I have never found the need to change any of these trucks from stock. They have plenty of HP and torque to tow anything that can legally be towed with them, and they are extremely reliable stock.

      Chris M I remember a time when people only towed with their diesel trucks and didn’t care about racing or big hp numbers. Nowadays we have all these coal roller boys wanting to race a truck that weighs over 8,000lbs 🤦🏻‍♂️

    • @chrism2042
      @chrism2042 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@bfe671 - I get it but they turn them up expecting the stock trans to hold the HP. I know a guy that had a power stroke with the 6-pack tuner a few years ago. Kept it turned up because it was cool. But then when the engine came apart, all he could take about was that junk Ford. I have a 1970 Chevelle SS 454 dyno 815 hp, I know what will happen if I put a stock turbo 400 behind it

    Absolutely the best transmission video I’ve seen. This guy is real, I’ve heard so many younger guys talk trash about the 68RFE and it always comes down to an ass load of hp and big tires topped by no common sense. We have 68RFE’s with close to 200k always towed heavy loads and never been touched (just oil changes according to the OM). When I was in my early 20’s a good older friend told me when I was going to add large tires “ skip the 20’s (age) and just go to your 30’s make mature decisions”. With that said didn’t get the large tires and it has always stuck with me. Like he said awesome transmission for towing. Don’t get me wrong though these high hp rigs are sweet I’m just saying they are designed for the hp given and do work well for that after that don’t bash them because you’ve made alterations past what it was designed for.
    We run 7 units 6 of them are 3500’s with the 68RFE and 1 4500 with the Aisin, the Aisin went out at 60,000? Not bashing it just saying anything can fail

      I have to agree these guys think that any transmission is gona hold up to 150 hp tunes..burnouts or towing 10k on 150 hp tune lol I just shake my head and walk away nothing stock is gona hold all that ..you buy a new truck drive it like it was designed to do..most of the time it will perform as it was designed to not crazy tunes on stock parts

      Its the 68rfe rap, just needs to rhyme. Seroiusly though, this is the best vid for 4th gen, screw the 68, built 48 is way to go untill aftermarket oversized housings with much bigger clutches come out cheap for 68.

    One of the better videos I have watched on You Tube. I picked up a used 2014 2500 6.7l mega cab 4x4 01/2020. I knew the look I was going for but, didn't really have an idea past that. I plan to use it for towing in the future but, for the most part it is used to just go camping and hauling gear in the bed. I did a basic spacer level in the front and put some 22x12 with 37x22x12.5 (regret doing that now). the truck has about 105,000 miles on it and being I live in CA and with all the recent diesel regulations I don't plan on doing any deletes or mods to the motor, maybe Banks intake and exhaust with a pedal controller. However, I have been doing a lot of research and it apparent that to get longevity out of my truck I should look into regearing. I feel the transmission is bound to go out based on the mileage and the way it delays on shifting at times.This video really convinced me that those are the best upgrades I should do. Thanks.

    Spot on Lavon, you hit the ball out of the park on this vid. I have a 2018 Ram 2500, SD gen 2 swap w/EFI, needless to say 2k miles later my 68RFE cooked 5th & 6th gear clutches and I run a 4.10 rear end. Had to have it towed to my Diesel guy for a Revmax 850 and wait a month for Revmax to build one. Wish I had spoke to you to earlier. This is probably the most real, honest, and appreciative review of the 68rfe I have listened to. I appreciate that you do not negate brands, but are real in regards to what you have seen and do because of "X" reason. I myself, would like to create reliability and maybe a little power and responsiveness. With that said, I look forward to watching your other vidoes and checking out your company. Thank you again for your very professional and "real" talk about the 68rfe. It was truly a breath of fresh air. It would be interesting to hear your view of the Sonnex clutch and basket versus Revmax's. Another question, are all billet parts pretty much the same between brand "X and Y?" It would be nice to hear a view from a non-proprietor.

    You are the absolute BEST! So glad that you broke it down for the guys that hate the 68RFE. They will literally do 37s or 40s, 6" lift, delete, and tune the truck to within an inch of its life and when the trans pops, they say it is no good. It simply is not designed for that type of torque load from the factory, as you say. And many guys do not re-gear the rear end at all, running 3.42s with 37s.😤 This video should be required viewership for any Ram 6.7/68 buyer that wants to mod.

    Finally,
    Thank you for clearing up this info about the 68rfe. I have a 2018 ram and i really love it. No problems at all. I also have a 75 hp tune and it runs beautifully. I’m planning to Purchase a fifth wheel trailer gvwr is 9500 lbs. I hope this will work for me in the future. I’ll keep you informed. This will be a toy hauler but I’m not hauling anything larger than an ATV. Any suggestions you have are welcomed.

    Had a 2006 Cummins. Absolutely loved the thing. Sold it, like an idiot, and bought a 2012 6.7 Powerstroke, which is a great truck and I practically stole the thing, but it ain’t no Cummins. Been contemplating looking for 2015-16 Powerstroke or a 2012-2018 Cummins, but I was really scared about the transmission, this video eases my mind. Thank you for all awesome information. Gonna look for an un-modded pawpaw truck with stock tires.

But I trying to understand how that will change the design of 750 rpm gear splits . I don't race just pull my trailer . I use the manual shift and lockup and no overdrive in the hill . Just 3 gears . This is why I stayed with a 33" tire. Tuned, deleted, daily driven on 33" tires. Never even put the switch into the 5th setting. No need. Plenty of power on setting 3. And if I want a little extra I'll go up to 4th setting. 185k miles, stock trans. Some time this spring I'll be doing a 2nd gen turbo setup just to get rid of the VGT turbo.

    I have a 16 Ram 2500 and it has the 66rfe transmission. I have been getting the P0871 code for a few months now, referring to the overdrive solenoid. As long as I keep the RPMs under 2000 when taking off and can get over 30 mph, it does fine. If you hit the throttle too hard, you get the hard shift, and it goes into limp mode and it will shoot the code eventually. When you turn the truck off and restart it, it goes back to operating normally. I have also heard that these transmissions are pretty reliable but the valve bodies and solenoid packs are junk. The solenoid pack has been replaced 4 times under warranty. My fluid looks fine. I ordered a Sonnax valve body today and it will be here Friday. I'm hoping it will solve my problems.

    I had a 2014 Dodge ram 2500 heavy duty Cummins diesel I’ve always love commons But I have to voice my concern. I went out and bought a standard cab mint Hunter green you could see the truck in the circle to the left with 90,000 miles mint condition $25,000 I thought it was a great deal and it was a great deal. I worked it for 15,000 miles and I mean I worked at hauling around the dump Trailer. Never had a problem except I had to change the water pump because the belt broke which has no problem which is easily fixable. At around 105,000 miles after having it for about a year and a half using it heavy duty and enjoying every minute of it I pulled into a diner to get a cup of coffee when somebody noticed that there was smoke coming From the transmission I am mediately shut it off Let it cool down check the transmission fluid there was transmission fluid in there but when I went to shift into gear a half hour later nothing no forward no reverse. I’ve been down this road before and no problem I had it towed right next-door to a dealer. The dealer I’ve used for years are very good dealer dodge ram. They’ve always been pretty good to me . They knew that the transmission had to be rebuilt but they said they can’t get the parts and that they would have to swap out a reman for $6000 I said no problem go ahead and they gave me five days it will be done sat in the shop For 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. When they finally said they cannot get a transmission for that truck because the demand for transmissions on that truck is so great they said I’m looking at about six months. I decided let me tow the truck out of there I brought it to another dealer and they took the truck as is paid off my loan gave me a check for the overage and I half hour later they sold it to the wholesaler. I love that truck so much unfortunately I could not get a transmission from anyone for that truck no matter what they wanted to charge me. It didn’t matter I was willing to pay the piper. I found out later because of all the ships stuck at the ports getting parts getting transmissions impossible literally. My next-door neighbor is a tow company with a Dodge 5500 flatbed the transmission went and he had a $5000 additional warranty he paid and his flatbed stayed at the dealer for six months and still no transmission. I decided to keep my 99 Dodge ram 2500 Cummins And add a fast FASS lift pump clean up all the grounds redo all the wiring in relation to the injection pump in the lift pump have the VP 44 checked my injection pump experts and today at the 99 Dodge ram 2500 four-wheel-drive Cummins is by far the best truck I’ve ever had
    As long as you stick with it and keep up on the maintenance I keep logbooks on it the truck has over 170,000 miles. I added a lot of extras on the truck new fan clutch fixed all the seals front and rear did all the fluids new radiator new batteries New manifold exhaust removed all the cracks replace with new parts .I went from 9 miles per gallon to 17 miles After I put in the FASS pump of course I had it done by certified technicians . I miss my 2014 If I ever came across another one again I might be very tempted to buy it I recommend the truck it’s a heavy duty truck it’s a heavy hauler and every dime you put in that truck you’re gonna get a dollar out of it. That’s my story

    I’d like to do a 68 in my 2nd gen 02. There’s not much info on it or maybe it’s not worth it but the power goal is a little over 700hp. Rather than the tall 3rd to 4th jump I thought it’s be nice to have two extra gears with the power. Not drag racer or heavy tower just a practical hot rod it what I want.

    Ok great video! I’m currently sitting in a Flying J truck center with a P0750 code and a P0740. I’m guessing that the P0740 is just open because the P0750. So with that said... Ram has sent me (within 30 min of my call to them) the solenoid pack and told me that this will fix the problem. So, the problem. I was towing my 44’ Enclosed Gooseneck (126,097 miles) total towing this trailer, when out of nowhere I get a slight jerk and then 4th gear from 70mph. Ok so strange. I press the gear selector back to drive and boom it jumps back to 4th. I pull off where I currently am. Pull the codes and contact Ram. They immediately send me the solenoid pack without asking for payment and with no issue. Fully warranty the part and had it to me so I can swap it out. I’m sitting here still just watching videos on this issue as I wait until morning to actually do the swap. As I mentioned this truck tows this trailer every week from Ohio to Florida with typically 15 HD bikes or sometimes a couple exotics or classics inside. With that said, do you feel that changing the solenoid pack will solve the two codes I’m getting once I’ve completed this swap? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    I own a 2018 2500 that chewed up a 68RFE with only light towing, total failure. Warranty gave a replacement, but in the two months Dodge had my truck I bought a 2020 HO with Aisin, honestly the Aisin does not seem to like daily driving. Maybe it's just me, but it feels awkward. The Aisin is my 7th Ram, so I have been around the block a few times. Wish I had my 2nd Gen HO with 6 speed back LOL

    I’ve got lab testing and third-party testing results. I’d love to send a sample 16 quart cube to try if you guys ever want to. We’re trying to get into the diesel and heavy duty market with this product and so far we’ve had great feedback. Let me know if that something you ever want to try out, in exchange for some feedback (if you havnt tried it yet!)

    Very good info 👌 but can I do a lot of heavy Halling with the 68 RFE . I have a 2003 dodge Cummins 3500 48 RE so is there a kit for the wiring to go 48 to a 68 . I do not like cutting and givbbing the wiring that's not for me .... and you say FIRE 🔥 OR BEING LIFTED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD.... NO THANK . Can you let me know what you have or what to do .

    Question I own a 04 ram 2500 5" aluminum drive shaft 68rfe. I have run stock size tires for 85 k on the truck changed fluid regular on trans. Am adding up to less than 600 and am running 35" tires I drive highway speeds loaded truck know has 117k trans is fine but I'm planning a rebuild myself likely around 150 175k if it holds that long I was a commercial driver with millions of miles exp. So I owned my own kw over 850 rwhp to much to cool but fun to drive 98 Kenworth.

    So can’t wait to rebuild my trans in the future…. Before it gets completely toasted.. have it built to hold 700 HP no matter what I use it for. Maybe 800hp just incase. Sounds like a fun time to replace a lot of the weaker components.

      AISIN is the best towing transmission. IF you are a real man towing BIG trailers, AISIN is your transmission.
      IF you are a soy boy or soccer mom just get a Honda.

    So, if you have the 68rfe as is from factory and you have the total delete and tune to get you to 650-700rwhp and you dont hotrod. But, if you do youshould manually keep it in 3rd or 4th geat and keep it out of 5th & 6th? This should save the trans asn4th is direct drive. And as far as normal daily driving it should last right?

    Hey Lavon, I have a 2012 2500 6.7 Ram, fully deleted, 4 inch FloPro turbo back exhaust with a 36 inch muffler, currently just using a Minimaxx that I've had for a few years with just box tunes (they suck, I know lol), have you done a pull on a setup like mine on the dyno? Thing is a runner, I'm kinda curious around what it might be putting to the ground. It is an HO model, stock 360 or 380, 800 torque at the flywheel I guess is how they got those numbers.

    Great info, a little counter intuitive because my truck is designed (stock) to tow 12k lbs with 33in tires. If I dont tow but I put on 35in tires, how can that be more demanding on the transmission than towing 1/2 a house ? So the question is which is worse, driving around town with 35s or towing 12k lbs across the country with 33s ? The additional torque required to turn a 35in tire is less than 10% the additional torque required to tow 12klbs is huge.

    • @DSGB2199
      @DSGB2199 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its about leverage. Not just weight. Bigger tires essentially increase stress back to the trans. Taking mechanical advantage away from the trans. Its ok not everyone will understand it. 35 not so much but 33 to a 37 is huge.
