You guys hit it out of the park with this one! Your method of execution and explanation is exactly what I needed to properly learn and understand my transmission. I own an EZ Link and this is the first time I’ve seen anyone break the workings down in a simple and straightforward fashion.
I have a bone stock 2014 3500 SRW, been chasing a whine only when in 6th gear. Kinda goes away or changes tune if you slightly put some pressure on the gear selector. No codes just changed fluid and it looked beautiful.
Yup 4wd and has 125k miles on it. Can’t speak to how the maintenance has been throughout its whole lifespan but I changed the fluid in the T case 10k miles ago when I bought it and the oil that came out looked great. Don’t think it’s a transfer case noise based on it only whining in 6 gear. If you manually shift it down to 5th the noise goes right away.
2014 ram 2500 6.7 4x4 Few days ago while driving I noticed my transmission did not want to shift automatically from 4th to 5th. I was able to manually get to 5th and 6th. The engine would sit at about 2k rpm trying to shift into 5th automatically, but no luck. The Trans temp was only about 140-150 during the drive. The truck had the CEL code p0740 pop up. I decided today to drop the pan to see if there was anything that happened that I did not hear. The atf4 was still very red and just small hints of particulates on the magnet but nothing else. Filled it back up. Let it idle in neutral with the parking brake on for a bit, then ran it in reverse and drive. I took it for a drive, the first shift from 4th to 5th was the smoothest I've felt since getting the truck at 148k, now 177k miles. But I slowed down to try again. And it didn't want to shift to 5th automatically. I was then able to manually shift into 5th and 6th.
Just bought a 2016 2500 Laramie 6.4 hemi, didn't make it 5 miles towards home went in limp mode after I noticed 5th-6th gear chirp while it was shifting in the rolling hills. I knew it had to be internal issue. Luckily the dealer took it in and the tech said he pretty much go internally to see what is wrong. I figured 430 ft tq @ 4k rpm shouldn't be a problem for a stock 68rfe? Only 103k miles. Edit: UPDATE, the dealership is installing a remanufactured transmission witha a 1yr 12k mile warranty. I learned the 66rfe is for ram 2500 gassers 5.7 and 6.4. The 68rfe is on the 6.7 Cummins. I believe the Asin tranny is only available in the Cummins 3500s and up.

I don’t know specifically about that with the 68’s, but there is not a screw that can be backed out two turns there. If you are getting a overpressure code, it will need to be addressed. Give us a call 859 737 4966.

Great info. Now have some idea how things work and what to look for. Have a 2018 3500 DRW crew 4x4, Full Delete, SOTF and EZLink. 170K miles. When I am towing, and go up a long grade, trans heats up to 215 or so and won't shift above 4th. Even after I get on the level, and it cools down it stays in 4th or lower. I have to stop, shut if off, wait a few minutes, then it goes back to normal. Have had an 0871 code recently, but not sure how that relates to the issue.

1: Does this apply to the gas 6.4 hemi?
2: If it does, I get plenty of throttle but no shift beyond first, any ideas?
I'm trying to avoid buying a full new transmission.
It will apply to anything with 68 and 66 RFE’s. Could be a valve body but the problem with a potential VB failure is that it likely hurt trans components (IE clutches, drums, etc).
2023 Ram 2500 6.7 with 36,500miles on it. I woke up one morning to start my day engine light was on I tested to pull the codes on my reader I got P0731 and P0933 the truck would not shift out of second gear and when the truck shifted from 1st to second gear there is a big jerk. I took it in to the dealership and they are saying they have to open up the case and start from there anybody have similar issues? I do tow a 20ft gooseneck dump trailer often with 5-6yds of dirt. Initially I was thinking it was the solenoid pack but the dealership told me no.
Im sure they got that from the CFI values.
Difference between 68rfe and 69rfe
i have a 68 all cluches are new but is give me code gear ratiol on 2
Are you CVI values off? If so you may need to go back through the install.
I had a 68rfe break the case and input shaft. I had a shop rebuild a different core. The shop that rebuilt my transmission pulled the pan yesterday and said they couldn't find anything wrong. The only time it acts up is when I go to pull a camper. I scanned it while it was running and I'm getting random codes. Could the problem be with the wiring harness for the transmission
I don’t know what codes you have or what your driveability issue is, you skipped over that. But, I can say this, if you think you have a electrical gremlin, especially in these 68 trucks, START WITH BATTERIES.
my mechanic said i need new 68. leaking front or rear seal. what should i do. just leaking fluid.
If you are leaning on a local guy to help you out make sure that he has a good knowledge and experience with the 68 RFE.
Whats rfe = rilable failure equipment
😂
i have po740 and po000
I have a 2015 ram 1500 and im getting a p0750 ... what could be my issue?
It can be a number of things, we really need more data. Code is for a L/R Solenoid malfunction.
I have a bone stock 2014 ram 2500 had a code for incorrect gear ratio and hydraulic pressure sensor performance cleared codes even permanent codes cleared themselves changed oil and filters went on a drive for a week no codes were thrown then went to pull a aluminum trailer with 2 atvs 40 miles in truck made a weird electronic noise ZZZiiiippp and went all Neutral i was able to guide into parking lot and left shut off for an hour went to startup again didnt go forward or reverse had it towed to nearby shop next day they called me saying it goes forward and reverse what should I have them actually look at since they say its ok?never slipped before either prior to this
The CFI’s should tell the story. These failures can happen to bone stock trucks too.
👍💪
I did a valve body today on a 2500 RAM and got a code P0731-00 gear 1 shift incorrect ratio and P086800 FLUID PRESSURE LOW,
codes came after fitting new valve body . Anyone with similar code after doing what i did i will give u the solution.
Low fluid
Fluid level correct? Go back over your install. Is this a new VB?
The fault was valve body missing some plugs supposed to remove from the old valve body and fit to the new one very easy to miss
the 68RFE is a major engineering failure.
