    I sold my 2 shops, transmission parts store and core business in 2005 and retired. The transmission business was very good to me and I like watching videos from operations like yours where you have your act together. Everyone has opinions on upgrades and fixes for things like the crack in the case. I won't comment on any of that because the business is largely made up of doing what's right for the customer and using best practices to put the transmission back on the road. You did a great job of explaining why you did each upgrade and how it affected the transmission. Enjoyed watching this.

      My only thought was that he should have tapped the threads "Before assembly" so that any remaining contaminants could be thoroughly flushed from the inside out.
      Like you said "Everybody does things different"... And yes , "It is nice and appreciated to see a "Pro" video. Well done guys.

      I’m restoring a 2001 3500 4x4 I’ve researched upgrades for every part of my truck example 1999 HD oem “T” style steering w/ 1999 oem drop pitman arm . Every part of the truck has been replaced with new parts . With the exception of the cab shell ,front clip the frame and the outer axle housings. The fact that you as a retired transmission expert made a major compliment in the comments about the knowledge of Firepunk eases all concerns of the quality of the Towmaster plus transmission and triple disc torque converter I bought from them almost a year ago but haven’t driven the truck more than a mile while getting a ballanced long block trimmed out for 400-500 hp + thanks for assuring me I made a good decision with Firepunk. Ok I have a question who answers is unimportant. I have a 04 2500 Cummins 5.9 48 re. I have replaced the trans at 123k second gear gone so I did not wait till it quit as I operate a ranch and had to have the truck to haul hay. I bought a reman and it has lasted unfortunately about 5000 miles. I bought it from the big reman in Florida I am sure they'll honor warrentee. However what is the trans capable of towing regularly and would a Manuel lock up with low stall and Manuel valve body improve towing. I have 0 issues keeping it cool there is three coolers on it and last time rolling down the road with trailer in tow was operating about 125 degrees frhrenhieght. However it decided to chatter upon take off and shortly after bit the Rick it looks like pump failure gears disintegrated and plugged valve body causing two clutch packs to fail as well as second gear band breakage and this is without disassembling the trans prices in pan and I'm sure in coolers exc. So it's all got to be cleaned out and or replaced before a rebuilt trans can go back in. However I am thinking an inline filter just before it drops back into the trans would prevent particles from getting in the new trans. Kinda a expensive fix for all three coolers. I'm concerned of blockage as well. Which is possible. And this a concern. I'm considering removing or eliminating the water to oil cooler the OEM dealer has on it as well as it seems to heat the trans up more than using the air to. Oil coolers. Opinion on this as well thank you all for any info.

    Man ol Man Just watched this video. I have been getting the royal run around about my 48re in a 2005 Ram 3500. Dodge dealer charged me 300 to check why my truck takes a while to move after its been sitting and they had no clue. Somebody else want to charge me 6500 to go through my tranny. After this video I know what to do. Great video. Good explanations.

I have an 05 with 250k with what I believe to be original trans. 2 long owner all stock truck well maintained. No issues yet but I am about to start plowing with the truck and towing 6000-10000 lb on a fairly reg basis. Hoping to get it rebuilt before I break it

    People might say your transmissions are expensive, but really you’re not just paying for parts and labor time. You’re paying for knowledge and r&d on what works and what doesn’t. And that’s something that just comes with experience, which makes it worth the money.

    great vid.. ONly thing I'd say is I'd tap out that cracked part before the case goes for cleaning, though it's good to see how to do it if you have to do it in the truck! I'm planning on rebuilding a 47RH here in a while for a first gen, so it'll probably be equivalent to a towmaster, a few basic upgrades

    Now i know where im getting my new 48re from. Thankfully mine hasnt gotten too bad yet. But my truck was an old farm truck when i bought it, and idk how well it was taken care of for the first 250k miles. But in the last 80k miles since ive owned my truck ive noticed trans fluid leaks and some seals going out. To include the rear main that needs done and the transmission just started having a strange issue where it acts like 3rd gear doesnt exist. (It stays in 2nd until about 2500rpm then seems to bypass 3rd for a brief moment right into 4th.) Similar issue when slowing down it will drop almost down to 6-700rpm then hit 2nd. No rough shifting just seems like 3rd gear doesnt exist.

Even when I pull it into neutral and give her a small Rev or 2 trying to speed the pump up !Even after a 5 or 6 min idle warm up ! Still using my 12yr old Dayco triple disc on this 3rd rebuild in 9 years ! I have upgraded 9 year old value body! But not the upgraded solenoid plungers don't know if they was available 12 years ago ? Did have a old 727 torque flight solid band and upgraded tensioner bolt installed for second gear hold ! Which was recommended by they trans builder ! Old girl needs some newer version parts in her ! 140,000 on 180 hp edge pro comp ,150 hp injectors, 63/74mm killer b super single turbo, straight 5 ' dymond eye exhaust, 3 peice dps exhaust manifold and banks big boss high flow intake manifold !

    When you tap the trans housing! You don't do all of them that way with that problem ? Only showing this if it's in the truck ? Correct ? I have a 46RE that was behind a gas 5.9, and I believe a 47RE, that's got the cutout on the bottom of the bell housing for the larger converter and I'm wanting to beef this 46 RE up to handle a 30' - 40' trailer with my Fiat and tools and stuff, what parts interchange between the 2 trans?

    I watched the rebuild and do you use a different stall convertor. My old 12 valve which is not very powerful any way will blow though the convertor . I hate the 750 rpm gear splits for towing so I was wondering if a low stall might help for towing . Thanks for the video .

    46RE Loaded with Red Eagle and Kolene extra throughout. On the forward clutch is it ok to use a flat snap ring as opposed to the Waved ring? Also I have .090 on my forward clutch and .025 on my rear clutch. Are the numbers inline with your specs? I do have a higher ratio kick down lever. I see at one point you guys drill something at the back of the case under the OD piston support what is that and why?

    Excellent video! I have a 173K mile 1999 V10 47RE that I want rebuilt as a Towmaster for a 1995 CPL1550 12 valve with approximately 250HP/635TQ. I am installing the 12 valve/47RE in a Suburban. Do you upgrade the 47RE internals to 48RE spec? Can you setup the 1999 47RE for Anteater control when rebuilding it? Thanks.

    When you are determining your overdrive selective shim you said you add 10 thousands. Is that to the measurement you make or to the shim after you made your measurement

    • @adambrison6028

      Best thing to do, buy a book, buy a bad trans, buy the parts and teach yourself. Read and re read and test when you've got it done and the. Apply somewhere now that you have somewhat knowledge on it

    I'm curious when you say sitting on the gas while at a stop building 15lbs of boost would weld the forward clutch's together? I get that there is load on them but i thought the forward clutch was fully engaged "not slipping" the moment you shift into drive, therefore the torque converter is doing all the "slipping" until you actually launch at which point the forward may and probably will slip some with all of the load being transferred during the launch?

    • @FirepunkDiesel
      @FirepunkDiesel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      But the torque converter makes massive amounts of heat while holding back 500hp, after a minute the converter is exhausting 350-400* fluid to the cooler, so the residual heat created in the converter will begin to shear the fluid and you start seeing pressure loss, that's when you begin to slip the forwards and eventually you have welded forwards.

    • @JaegerWrenching
      @JaegerWrenching 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@FirepunkDiesel Ahhh that makes perfect sense! I knew the converter would produce heat quickly but that is impressive! The things you learn over the years of racing! Thank you guys for always answering everyone's questions, it truly improves the diesel community!

    Only got through the first 6 1/2 minutes and I realized my 2000 Dodge's tranmission is in serious need of help. It only has 230K miles on it. ( Air bubble thingy, and not holding in gear.....) And much of that was easy with wery little heavy towing. IE going after friends vehicles and bring them home off the road dead. NOw I am left wondering how $deep should I get into getting it right again?????
