  • Paul (Kyle MacLachlan) kills Jamis (Judd Omen), and gives Water to the Dead. Most of this sequence appears in the Extended Edition, this segment completes the scene.
See scene 168 of the Sixth Draft of Dune.
The full 6th draft script of Dune is available from www.duneinfo.com
    168. EXT. FREMEN PLACE - DEEP DESERT - NIGHT
    ...
Jamis leaps. Paul easily evades him. Jamis attacks again and Paul stabs, but too slowly because of his shield training. Jamis turns and springs, trying to surprise Paul, but again Paul easily outmaneuvers him but is too slow on his attack. On the next attack, Paul cuts Jamis' hand and Jamis begins to show fear.
    JESSICA
    (inner voice)
He's never killed a man like this.
The two circle slowly. Suddenly Jamis can wait no longer. He leaps high, strikes down with his right hand but the knife has been expertly shifted to his left hand. Paul shifts beautifully and switches his knife hand. He plunges his knife deep into Jamis chest as Jamis comes down for him. Jamis continues down and crumbles dead on the ground.
Suddenly several of the Fremen rush forward and surround Jamis' body, cover it and whisk it away. Jessica studies Paul. She sees the excitement in him, in Chani and the others.
    JESSICA
    (inner voice)
He must not grow to enjoy such a victory.
    She moves to Paul.
    JESSICA (CONT'D)
Well, how does it feel to be a killer?
Paul stands, stunned by his mother's words. He really just then realizes what he has done. Tears begin to fall from his eyes. The Fremen are amazed. They move to Paul and he at first backs away, but then lets them touch his eyes and face with their fingers.
    FREMEN #2
    (whispering)
He gives water to the dead.
    JESSICA
    (to everyone)
He has never before killed a man in a
    blade.
    They stare in disbelief.

There were over 4 hours of good footage edited for the original movie. It was trimmed down so more "showings" could be done in a day at the theatre to make more money. It would be nice if we were to get a "supercut" of the original footage someday.

I think the new movie makes you understand more why Paul is crying after having killed Jamis. At least I felt more emotionally engaged to a character that wasn't even part of the story except for this battle. You empathized with Paul because you saw the visions he had of Jamis. All the things that could have happened and now will never happen. He lost a friend.

I wish the studio who let david lynch down make it up to him, by restoring dune 1984 to the masterpiece that it should be, they could still re edit all the great scenes into the full great movie, even though david lynch does not want to anymore, they can improve the special effects through cgi to fit the whole movie, insert the great deleted scenes, then dedicate it to david lynch. They should hire a competent editor and director who was symphatethic to david lynch interpretation of dune. Although it strays from the dune book, its still great.

That puts the scene in a completely different context. Paul in the movie looks shocked at what he just did & Jessica comes across as cold. I actually don't mind the scene, as it shows him crossing a threshold that there is no coming back from. She was just stating the fact that now he will have to kill to survive or perish in the deep desert.

If I remember correctly, you are mistaken. In the book, Paul dominates the fight. But since he does not realize at first, that it's a fight to the death, he is hesitant and expects Jamis to give up. The Fremen misinterpret this hesitation as "Paul playing with his prey".

This is one of my favorite scenes from the book, like others have mentioned, "giving water to the dead" is such a central concept to the Fremen. The relationship with Jamis' children and wife was also interesting. In the DL movie, you can see scenes where the two boys are in a scene but never addressed. I love that when Paul is in his "coma" after drinking the water of life, the two boys served as his body guards.

I thought it way back then and I still think it now. The stillsuit. The ultimate lazy-bums survival uniform. One you rarely ever have to take off, and one that you are encouraged to piss and poop in for it to work right. . and I still want one, only now I'd need to have the mid-riff let out a tad so that the paunch can have room to "express" itself.

Actually, if they added a cap over the head so that it covered the forehead & neck, it would be pretty much exactly how they were described in the book - a skin-tight black suit with catch-pockets on the chest & legs. The Fremen also wore a robe over the stillsuit, with a sash tied around the waist. Instead of pockets, they stuffed items into the sash. The outer-wear and the head-cap were about the only things the mini-series version got right.

I hadn't read the books but I can agree with this. However I think it was smart that Villaneuve added a bunch of visions of Jamis. It made the audience feel Paul's loss. A clever tactic to make the audience empathize with what the main character is battling with, how confusing these visions are. Villaneuve didn't have to do that. But throughout the film we are constantly seeing Jamis. The whole time I was expecting to see this character later on. And I felt robbed. Just like Paul felt robbed of all the mentorship and friendship he could have had with Jamis. but no, in this reality he had to kill him. I think the goal in this instance or rather the main focus was loss. It's suppose to be more emotionally impactful and less showing he is worthy to the Fremen. Let's say for argument's sake, David Lynch left this scene in the older movie. As a person who hasn't read the books, I still don't understand why he would be crying even so I would understand that him sacrificing his body of moisture proves something to the Fremen. It still feels empty to me. Although Paul didn't cry in the newer film, I still felt his frustration and reluctance to kill Jamis. As I was feeling my own frustration lol.

@@WoWGirl6 I actually didn't take much note of Jamis the first time I watched the movie, I think b/c I was more focused on Chani and there was just generally a lot going on.
When I watched Dune the 2nd time, I watched for Jamis specifically. (Cause of your comment. ;) ) He pops up twice in the later visions, and I think you're right that they help the audience understand the loss more fully.
Also, as someone who HAS read the book (albeit, a very long time ago), Jamis's presence in the visions is a clever way of hinting at how Paul's visions actually work.
The 2nd movie will probably clarify things, as Paul himself starts to understand, but I the way the visions were handled very well.
I STILL wanted "water for the dead" though, and I'm pretty sure audiences would have gotten it if it had been included. After all, it's been 20 years since I've read Dune and I still remember that part. Obviously, it made an impact.
I wonder if perhaps they removed it b/c, after the emotional outburst Paul has with his mother in the tent, they thought crying again would make him seem weak. (I don't think that outburst is in the book, though I think it was well done.)
Anywho, I'm just glad they did the book justice and the movie's getting good reviews. :)

Maybe as part of his formal education and military training could have included someone talking to him about the burdens of command. If I'm training someone so they can kill I'm also going to talk to them about the when's and why's as well as what to expect emotionally.

I can understand why people don't like this movie. It is so complex that a person would almost have to have read the novel to know what was going on. I read it when I was about 13 and had to keep going back and forth between the story and the glossary just to figure out what the heck was going on. The acting is great, the FX are either very disappointing or flipping amazing. I hope it gets remade by someone who knows and loves the material with the budget to fill it out. I could see it being two separate movies. I don't think there is enough material for the three books of the original novel. But it is certainly to much for one movie.

@@cee_jay_mcc7914 Not for me. As a person who read the books, this new movie was a visual and sonic feast that supersedes any fanboy's wildest dreams.
But as an avid filmgoer, I also believe the movie really fails to stand on its own as a storytelling experience. The pacing is glacial, the characters are mostly throwaway, the conflict is kinda muddled, the buildups lack payoff, and it ends on a weird, unsatisfying note.
I think Denis Villeneuve's film is mostly saved by the otherworldly production design and body-thumping acoustics (if you saw it in a theatre). It delivers the Michael Bay experience of "looks good--sounds loud"--which is often enough to titillate and delight audiences. But the characters themselves are mostly immemorable.
In the end, I was riveted with what I saw on-screen, it was a sci-fi dream come true for me as a person familiar with the franchise.
But for those unfamiliar with the story, I wouldn't be surprised if they loved the visuals and sound--but found the story vague and characters less than stellar.

@@cee_jay_mcc7914 I don't believe there is anything inherently edgy about disagreement.
The distinction between our views is that you are content if a movie is faithful to the book.
I expressed that--when it comes to screen adaptations of books--I value films being able to stand on their own and meet certain storytelling standards of their medium; Villeneuve's Dune didn't do that for me and others, and I outlined why.
I very much enjoyed it as a fan who can fill in the film's measurable gaps in storytelling and pacing with deep knowledge of the books and the story's eventual direction.
But I can easily see how audience members who haven't read the books received a far more incomplete experience--because the film by itself lacks some critical elements of being a story that stands fully on its own.
I work in tech. The underdeveloped elements of Villeneuve's Dune parallel the tension I often face at work. And that is the difference between knowing things in your head and being able to explain them to others.
Sure, I can convey things in the technical jargon my peers are accustomed to, but translation is required when I'm going to communicate outside that circle of people. An acquired skill for many in higher levels of tech management is being able to translate their knowledge and insights into a language that conveys priority, stakes, and consequences to their non-technical bosses, clients, and peers.
Using that analogy, I believe that Denis Villeneuve's Dune was an excellent adaptation for the fans who have a priori technical knowledge so-to-speak from the books.
But I think he very much unnecessarily skimped on parts of filmmaking language that fashion a story all people can engage.
So, there we have us. A fan who is very satisfied with a movie created for established fans.
And a fan who is disappointed that the film was created without really trying to engage people who have the potential to *become* fans.
Regardless, though, I believe Villeneuve's Dune achieves a baseline of the moviegoing experience: It gives everyone an audiovisual spectacle.

I wish they restored it to its full vision, ( i was talking about the david lynch movie, i love the dune books, and adaptations, even though not perfect) i feel for david lynch, he was pressured to cut scenes and not been given final cut. Of course it hurt him so he refused when he was requested to do a directors cut, when they should have given it to him in the first place. They should have a competent director, i wish like denis villeneuve to re edit, restore and remaster dune 1984, to include great deleted scenes, as compensation and tribute to david lynch effort. Even though he does not want to do a directors cut. Give the man his due. I respect the efforts of the filmakers, even though its not perfect.

In the book it wasn't Paul's first kill. He took out one of the Harkonnen's when Jessica and Paul escaped from the Orthinopter. "Well-l-l now--how does it feel to be a killer"? She asks after he bests Jamis in the knife fight. The difference is her concern. From the book. "Now is the terrible moment, she thought. He has killed a man in clear superiority of mind and muscle. He must not grow to enjoy such a victory". His first kill against the Harkeonnen was with his feet and was quickly done against a much lesser opponent who, as a Harkonnen, many might not have considered 'a man'. It was about the third reading of the book when I realized it wasn't really Paul's first kill.

For their culture, if you cry for someone who is dead, they must have truly had an effect on you... so not only does Jessica's prodding cause Paul to not enjoy/relish violence, it's also meant as a way of impressing and ingraining themselves into the Fremen tribe.
